Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars this is an excellent disc.......2007-01-26

The problem with most modern metal or "metalcore" these days seems to be the lack of innovation,or anything new and fresh. So many bands sound as if they are the same, with all the same old tired rehashed formulas of trying to be the fastest, the ones with the most ferocious growls, and those pesky breakdowns. Most often so many different bands wind up sounding pretty much the same,or trying very hard to be the next Killswitch. Thats precisely why I love this album, its fresh and new and throws a pretty wicked curve ball to anyone whos expecting more of the same tired [...]. Its very reminiscent of Lamb of God in some ways but without being a copycat, and theres anough variation musically and vocally to really hold your interest from beginning to end. These guys are very heavy, and inject melody into the mix without sounding as if they used the same template as all the other bands. The vocals are quite brutal and intense at times, but it seems as if the vocalist changes tiers a bit to suit the mood of each song. The opening track kicks things off like a powerhouse, and the songs keep getting better as the disc prgresses. Red Neck War showcases a different vocal approach and is one of the standout tracks, while The Rat Eaters is a piledriver with harsh vocals,a different kind of breakdown effect and one of the coolest solos Ive heard in a while. Five Faces of Madness and Temporary Temples are a couple other standout tracks. These guys wear their religious and political leanings on their sleeves, and I could have really done without the ultra Anti Bush message in Ancestry of the Antichrist, but its still a killer song . All in all this stands out as an excellent release and somewhat of a breath of fresh air in a seemingly endless sea of generic music. For fans of Lamb of God,Chimeara,Dry Kill Logic,Slayer, and old school Metallica, just to name a few. Defenitely worth the money in my opinion, and it will be interesting indeed to see what these boys from WV willl do next!

5 out of 5 stars And You Shall Buy This CD.......2006-06-28

I bought this CD when it came out so this review is a little late. I heard Five Faces Of Madness on the radio and had to hear more. This is THE BEST CD of 2005 in my opinion. I then bought "The Fundamental Component" and I think it is also a killer disc, though I like Serpents alot better. I highly recommend buying this CD, you won't be disappointed. I can't wait for Byzantine to release another album.

5 out of 5 stars Superb musicianship.......2006-05-13

This band has real potential. They are an extremely tight outfit. They have unique ideas and the ability to execute them successfully. If you like heavy music that has some purpose other than just being loud and fast, then these guys are for you. If all you like is synchronized noise, stick with your Cannibal Corpse CDs.

No, I have no affiliation with the band. Hell, I had not even heard of them until today. That's disappointing -- so many great bands out there, such as this one, who can't get the recognition they deserve because your local radio station is too busy playing the latest from Foo Fighters and Green Day.

Again, if you like really heavy music with a sense of melody, get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is what metal is all about........2006-01-17

I bought this CD the day it came out, from a Best Buy deep in the heart of Texas. This is a band that deserves your respect because they live and breathe metal and they always have. This is a band to root for...they've quit jobs, slept on floors, drove all night across country...because they love to play metal for those who love to hear it, anytime, and anywhere.

Regardless of who you think they sound like a mix of...they are a rock-solid NWOAHM act with a unique lyrical perspective (who else incorporates the culture of their home state so well, without an ounce of cheese?) These guys are proud of their roots in West Virginia and pour every ounce of pride and energy they have into pummeling you. That's a good thing.

As for the musicians...Tony Rohrbough has been woodshedding his chops since an early age. He's emerged as a mutant hybrid of Alex Skolnick and Steve Vai...and applied those influences to an extreme new form of metal. OJ can pull off any combination of screams/growls/bellows as well as sing, and is a hell of a rhythm player. It fits with the music. These guys played with a drum machine at countless gigs because they couldn't find a human to play the parts accurately! The current line-up is a precision metal, umm, machine.

"Jeremiad" is the obvious single on this one, and probably their strongest track to date. One of the gripes I've heard is that there are a few songs on this album that aren't quite as manic as on their debut "The Fundamental Component." Chalk it up to growth in songwriting and the desire not to make the same record twice. Regardless, this album is still a joyride of the brutal new american metal.

Buy it.

2 out of 5 stars Vanilla in a bowl of Cherry Garcia.......2006-01-01

I bought Through The Eyes of the Dead's new album after hearing only one song on Sirius. That album was one of the best purchases music wise I made this year. I heard a song from Byzantine on Sirius as well and proceeded to buy their album. It was an ultimate disapointment. Anyone comparing them to Meshuggah is nuts. There is nothing original or new about this album. The vocals are very weak, and dull. The guitars are no Fredrik Thordendal that's for sure. Maybe their "style" of playing just isn't appealing to me, or maybe it is the vocalist trying to impersonate Burton C. Bell from Fear Factory with his singing. Then again, no one likes the singing from Fear Factory either. If you like plain, generic, vanilla metal, then this is your album.
