Metal is ALIVE IN ATHENS and in New York.......2006-11-11
This is the cd that got me into this band, I was on the internet in a Heavy Metal chatroom and some kid around 17 ( I'm 2x that ) Told me about Iced Earth and sent me a sample of mp3..I was instantly interested, he told me to get this cd becuase it had alot of songs from their catalog of cd's. The production is excellent I must say, and the amount of music you get is well worth every penny. I love Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and "OLD" Metallica ( pre Black album) and this band has all aspects of those bands.
some of the highlights for me are "Melancholy, the 16 min Masterpiece "Dantes Inferno" Something wicked trilogy songs, etc.
If you love Tradtional Heavy Metal...buy this cd....NOW!!
Can anyone say Perfect?.......2006-10-04
I'm not going to babble on and on about this CD for many have already babbled. What i'm going to say is that this album is a great live album. Instead of getting 1 studio album or getting a best of collection, just get this album (similar to Iron Maiden((Live After Death))). Amazing. Only Iced Earth has the bravery of playing a 16+ minute song! More amazing riffs, half or whole ballads, long epics, short shredding solos to longer more melodic ones, this is a perfect album in all aspects. A Must have for any not just metal fan, but music lovers in general. Get This album NOW!!! Quit out of Amazon and look online for your closest music stores info! SEE IF THEY HAVE THIS. ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL
Definite Live Collection!.......2006-08-08
Iced Earth never fails to please me. This is THE live album, the live album that ranks up there with Decade of Aggression, Live After Death, and Live Scenes from New York. Everything about it is energetic and intense, and Iced Earth are one of those rare bands that sound just as good live as they do in the studio. No studio overdubs here, folks, just all out unadulterated metal.
Anyone new to Iced Earth should start here, just dont drool on the amazing artwork.
Athens is Alive!!!.......2004-09-02
Here we have it. We have here, one of the most awesome live albums in metal history. Rock in Rio can't even hold a candle to Alive in Athens, in my opinion. Almost everything about this album is completely mind-blowing. Most of the time, I'd rather listen to a studio version of a song rather than a live version, but not with Alive in Athens.
With Alive in Athens, Iced Earth takes the studio to the audience and multiplies the awesomeness on all kinds of levels. This is the true poster boy of all live albums. There are no mistakes, no breaks, or anything stupid. All there is room for is the pure power of heavy metal. I know Jon Schaffer traditionally doesn't use BC Rich guitars, but he used one well on Alive in Athens.
The guitars have a very heavy crunch sound, as if you're being beaten into the ground with a sledgehammer. The solos stand out more than on the studio albums, even though some parts couldn't be harmonized it's still just as good. The thing I would have changed would have been to take out "Last Laugh" as well as "The Path I Choose," and replace them with something like "Burnt Offerings" and "Consequences," maybe. Dante's Inferno on Alive in Athens easily beats the Burnt Offerings studio version. The sound is so sweet, crushing, heavy, and melodic.
I was glad to hear Barlow do the Night of the Stormrider material, because I wasn't a fan of Greely's vocals at all. Matt totally nails the NOTS material with ease, which brings a smile to my face each time I listen to it. When I first bought the album it was in my CD player for over a few months. Yes, it's that good! This album completely pulverizes any live Iron Maiden or Judas Priest album with ease. This album is worth every penny and should be owned by all heavy metal fans.
The only thing from Iced Earth you'll ever Need.......2004-08-23
This is probably the only thing from Iced Earth you'll ever need. The sound quality is almost studio perfection, very crisp and clear sounding, right up there with Slayer's Decade of Aggression or Exodus's Another Lesson in Violence or Metallica's S&M. Listening to this album makes me wish I was there, hearing the crowd chanting "Iced Earth, Iced Earth" just makes me want to chant along with them as they wait for the next bone crushing song. The highlights of this album for me are Burning Times, Pure Evil, Dante's Inferno, Stormrider, Dark Saga, and Iced Earth, all of these songs seem to have the energy that was needed in their studio albums, even the speed up version of Burning Times is very cool, the attitude of the song performance is quite overwhelming. This is again a very powerful album and a great introduction to Iced Earth, I will provide you with the tracklisting of the third disc of the set that I got so you can see that the three disc set is much better, and well worth the money.

Customer Reviews:
Nice Collection.......2007-03-05
I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.
PERFECT!.......2006-10-26
There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.
Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19
This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!
More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02
Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

IEIEIEIEIEIEIEIEIEIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-08
amazing sound for a live recording. the performance is mind numbing when you hear how tight the guitars are especially that part of stormrider where the picking is so precise and so fast. it's amazing on the studio album. when you hear it live prepare for the douche chills. this alive in athens is the gateway cd to iced earths entire collection. i couldn't order everything they had fast enough after i heard this.
Killer album.......2006-02-09
A high quality album, unique in its type. Everything is killer: flawless guitars on all song (some parts start a little bit weird like Burning Times lead guitar part), awesome drumming - Brennt Smedley, an excellent job (Pure Evil... tsss pure technique). In overall:
Disc 1: fast, furious and evil. Best tracks: Pure Evil, Dante's Inferno, Travel in Stygian, Slave to the Dark.
Disc 2: more classic but still killer. Best tracks: Dark Saga, Last December, Stormrider, Prophecy, Birth of the Wicked, Iced Earth.
Disc 3: not so popular songs, but still great. Best tracks: Desert Rain, Brainwashed, Disciples of the Lie, When the Night Falls, Violate.
A MUST HAVE... FOR SURE.
Showcases the best metal of the 90's.......2005-10-01
I've heard it said that, just as Iron Maiden's "Live After Death" was the definitive live metal album of the 80's, Iced Earth's "Alive In Athens" was the definitive live metal album of the 90's. As a Maiden fan, it pains me to disagree - "Alive In Athens" is definitely on a higher level than the Maiden classic. In fact, it's probably one of the best live albums ever made, period. The band is captured in its prime (coming off the recording of the near-flawless "Something Wicked This Way Comes"), and they play their hearts out. Matt Barlow, always one of my favorite vocalists, sounds INCREDIBLE here. The sheer energy that the band brings to their performance is captured perfectly.
Also captured perfectly is the energy of the fans - the cheering, the clapping/singing along with the band, and especially the chants of "ICED EARTH! ICED EARTH!" make it seem like you're there. At times, I felt like chanting and cheering along with them.
The tracklist is perfect - obviously, it contains a lot of material from their latest album ("Something Wicked"), but there's a lot of older stuff too for fans to enjoy. Most of "Dark Saga" and half of "Burnt Offerings" makes it on here too, as well as the best songs from their first two albums. And, like I said earlier, the band brings an incredible amount of energy into this, resulting in these versions of the songs mostly being better than the originals.
To wrap it up, I have a few questions for metal fans everywhere. Do you have this in your collection? If not, then why aren't you clicking "Add to Shopping Cart" already? There's something here for everyone, and I guarantee that if you're into Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Testament, etc, then you will LOVE Iced Earth. In fact, if you've never heard Iced Earth, then i'd recommend this album first - this was my own first Iced Earth album, and I loved it to death. It's a perfect showcase of this incredible band and the incredible music that they've put out. So buy it. Right now.
The best live album ever!.......2005-05-29
I honestly thought that nothing could ever beat Iron Maiden's "Rock In Rio" live record, but "Alive In Athens" by Iced Earth soon changed my mind. Jon Schaffer and the guys preform every song perfectly and to the best of their ability. The greeks are the craziest Iced Earth fans out there, they sing to every song and chant to every guitar rythem. The two albums the band mainly concentrate on during the first two discs are "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and the "Dark Saga", but they also cover the "Night of The Stormrider" album as well. The best song they preform in my opinion is the sixteen minute long epic "Dante's Inferno", its so cool to finally hear what a live version of that song sounds like. Matt Barlow sings more strongly in the song live than on the album, which is a big plus in my book. Other songs live that I liked were: "Travel In Stygian", "The Hunter", "Slave To The Dark", "A Question of Heaven", "Angel's Holocaust", "Night of The Stormrider", "The Path I Choose", "Melancholy", "I Died For You", "Watching Over Me", "Violate", "Iced Earth", "The Something Wicked.." Trilogy, "When The Night Falls", "Cast In Stone", "Blessed Are You", and "Violate". Overall "Alive In Athens" is a great preformance by a top notch Metal band. Jon Scaffer continues to show his passion for Metal, and Iced Earth will continue reing in the Metal world.
A must have for any IE fan.......2005-03-26
This is, with out a doubt the best IE cd that I own. Every song is awesome, the best being Dante's Inferno, A Question of Heaven, Watching over me, The Hunter, Last December and When the Night Falls. The music and the crowd will send chills down your spine on songs like The Hunter and Watching over me.
If you like any of IE's other stuff, you will love this one.
