5 out of 5 stars I say "change is good"...........2007-02-11

So as you may have noticed from reading other reviews for this album, that the band have changed up their style of bit from their previoud albums. Well, they have and it's not bad. In fact, I believe its a good move on their part. With their previous albums, they all had a Judas Priest "Painkiller" feel to them. Well, with this one they've branched out a bit and added some epic elements to their song writing. By epic elements I mean some minor orchestrations and whatnot. What this does is give the old generic Priest-sounding songs a bit more edge and differenciation. In this case, it's a good move for this band because it might get them out of the "Oh it's a Priest Clone band" critique. Does this album still have that Priest feel? Yeah, a bit but, for the most part, you can tell that Primal Fear is trying to change up their style a bit and I think it'll do'em good in the long run.

Let's just say that after hearing this album AFTER all the other ones, that I hope they continue with this style on their upcoming 2007 album. I just hope they go back to their more traditional cover-art. I hate these bland "seal" cover-arts. Every band out there now has done an album with cover-art like this recently.

I won't go over each song, because several other people already have, but I will say that there are no less than three nearly 8 minute songs on this album. That's a big change for Primal Fear whose songs only generally run in the 4 to 5 minute range. This allows them to be a bit more epic with long sections of nothing but guitar melodies which are very cool. Reminds me of some of Pagan's Mind songs, which also run in the 6 to 8 minute range.

3 out of 5 stars Three And A Half Stars for Seven Seals.......2006-09-05

I was looking to get some Primal Fear because I heard some music from them and read many reviews and liked what I heard. From this I learned about them and thought they were very good. I only wanted to buy their best music, and from what I have heard and read Nuclear Fire and Black Sun were their best, but many people said good things about Seven Seals too. I am sorry to say I was disappointed with this disc. It is boring compared to Nuclear Fire and Black Sun. It sounds very basic. If you want a heavier faster feel go for Nuclear Fire and Black Sun. They are my favorite albums from Primal Fear, and arguably their best.

4 out of 5 stars They continue to shell out good material with this album.........2006-07-28

Where to start this review? Hmmm..well let's start with those who aren't familiar with Primal Fear. Primal Fear are primarily a mixture between heavy metal and power metal (some could argue power metal is heavy metal but lets not go there). Their vocalist Ralf Scheepers sounds unbelieveably similiar to Rob Halford so comparisons to Judas Priest are very inevitable. He even tried out for Priest i believe and lost out to 'Ripper' Owens. I'm glad he didn't get the gig really because if he did Primal Fear wouldn't exist which would be a tragedy! Anyway Primal Fear in my opinion really resurrect the heavy metal sound that was popular in the late '70s and '80s.

Onto the album then. I must start off and say this is not Primal Fear's best release but that doesn't mean it is bad at all just not their best (hence the 4 stars). Anyway standout tracks for me are 'Demons and Angels', 'Immortal Ones', 'In Memory', 'Diabolus', 'Evil Spell' and 'All For One'. Personally i really don't like 'Rollercoaster' it's just a horrible riff in my mind lol. 'Question of Honour' is OK and so is 'Carniwar'. Anyway onto the reasons. For me songs like 'Evil Spell', 'Immortal Ones' and 'All for One' are just damn catchy songs with those great crunchy and chugging riffs. I still think they should have started this album with 'All for One' because it would grab the listener's attention straight off, that riff is easily the most headbangable riff in history and you'll know which one i mean when you hear it! Songs like 'Demons and Angels' and 'Diabolus' are heavy power metal rockers basically with 'Diabolus' sort of being a bit epic. 'In Memory' is a touching ballad with nice solid guitar work to ensure it works well. The instruments on this album are truly all played very well and there are no complaints from me.

The reason i don't think this album is their best is mainly cause some of the songs are much slower paced and there's more power metal touches here than on previous releases such as choirs and keyboard fills. My favorite releases from them are 'Nuclear Fire' and 'Jaws of Death' which are worth checking out if you thoroughly enjoy this album as those albums will really take you back to the days when heavy metal reigned supreme. But this latest release by Primal Fear still shows them on impeccable form and heralds the message that heavy metal is still reigning with avengeance. Hope that was helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Crushing, epic, metal anthems!.......2006-07-22

If it was 1987 these guys would be the biggest band in the world, and I mean that in the best way, as in when METAL was king. This album is as good if not better then the Black Sun album, which was awesome. There is no filler material here, every song is a keeper. Brutal, pounding metal with plenty of speed and power.
If you like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Slayer, or Testament, buy this album. This band remains one of the brightest lights in the metal world.

5 out of 5 stars THEIR BEST ALBUM EVER!!!.......2006-06-28

GREAT!!! GREAT!!! Put it on and sing along! This is true heavy metal a classic album! You loved "Nuclear Fire" and "Black Sun"? This is better by far and Scheepers is at his best!!! Someone would point they're a Judas Priest clone...THEY'RE NOT!The style follows the Judas flow but Primal Fear are more intense...I still do love Priest, they're simply different.
    METAL IS FOREVER!!!!

Franz Schmidt's magnum opus oratorio adapting the last book of the New Testament, the Revelations of St. John (and apocalyptic revelations they were), has been an imposing mystery to American music lovers. Rarely is it encountered in concert, and recordings have featured intriguing collections of musicians (tenor Fritz Wunderlich in one, conductor Dmitri Mitropoulos in another), though often in less-than-great sound and without English texts. This is the first recording that could unlock the seals for non-Germanic listeners: it has all the surface polish this music craves, while conductor Franz Welser-Most loves the music and knows it well. As dictated by the composer, St. John is sung by a vigorous heldentenor, Stig Andersen. Rene Pape is the voice of the Lord--and sounds like it. But with so much help from performers, the piece is likely to remain a cult item. Its dense, wordy text floats like corks on the chromatic salt sea of Schmidt's orchestration, guided by a committed, unsentimental sense of dramaturgy but not much sense of melody. --David Patrick Stearns

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars ...could be better, but get the HARNONCOURT!.......2003-12-24

I bought this recording after hearing it live in Toronto with the TSO and Ben Heppner, I forgot who was conducting(someone not so well known)...it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life and the key moment was the "Hallelulia" chorus at the end. It was overwhelming! When it was over, I was shaking all the way home! I was dissapointed when I heard Welser-Most doing the same chorus...It's a bit slow and not dramatic enough. (That moment should be absolutely overwhelming, and swift-like, taking you up up and away!) I listened to it many times and even bought the Mitropoulos version to compare (which suffered terrible sound, but good interpretation and cast). But I still wasn't fully satisfied with the oratorio as a whole. Welser-Most does have some nice moments, especially in the "hell scenes" (full of dramatic thrust, weighty fire and powerhouse sound). But I still couldn't see the structure of the work, I needed to understand the work structurally and musically, and he didn't do that for me. I read in the Penguin Guide about a Harnoncourt version on Teldec, which I thought would be promising (they give it 2 and a half stars...they're always complaining about something). But was I ever right about deciding to get the Harnoncourt! After I found it and listened I understood everything! Harnoncourt plays every passage with such dedication and with so much importance, He doesn't walk it on by like Welser-Most, he shows you everything. The playing is gorgeous and the sound is so much better than the EMI. He is with the Vienna Philharmonic and Singverein in a live performance in Vienna, excellent cast too. There is a interview in the booklet, along with full translations of the text. He does the glorious "Hallelulia" chorus extremely splendorously, building and building it up until the final "Amen". If you want to have Franz Schmidt's great Magnum Opus oratorio, get the Harnoncourt version on Teldec, its amazing! I give it 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding recording . . . but where is the text?.......2000-07-25

This is an outstanding recording of Schmidt's last masterpiece. The Amazon reviewer who cites the lack of melody might have missed some of the "big tunes"--they are there, but one cannot really incorporate "haunting melodies" in a fugue or in some of the faster movements of the piece. However, even if the work is not particularly melodic, it is certainy quite lyrical.

The performance is wonderful, particularly in the opening "Prelude in heaven" and the concluding sequence, starting with "Hallelujah!" The solo quartet (Oelze, Kallisch, Odinius, Reiter) make an excellent team, and Pape is quite commanding. The true "star" of the piece, however, is St. John--the nearly twenty-minute monologue at the beginning of Part II is quite without equal in the classical repertoire. Luckily, Stig Andersen is quite up to the demands of this enormously challenging part.

The only criticism I had was that (in my copy at least) there is a translation of the libretto, but not the libretto itself. Curiously, the Mitropoulos recording on Sony features the libretto but not the translation. However, at full price, texts and translations should be standard. One only need look at the Schubert Hyperion series for countless examples of good production design.

5 out of 5 stars The last Great Oratorio.......2000-02-14

If there's one thing this overwhelmingly powerful oratorio proves, it's "don't mess with the Big Man upstairs!" In setting the nearly-complete Apocalypse as revealed to John the Divine, the Austrian composer Franz Schmidt produced a masterpiece and, perhaps, the last great oratorio.

This is music that really ought to be in your collection. It is an easy piece to follow, as it is laid-out in the classic oratorio design, with John the narrator introducing the various events which occur as the seven seals are opened. Musically, Schmidt doesn't move much past chromatic late romanticism.

However, lest I make it sound like a retread of earlier pieces, I must reiterate that this is strong stuff. Schmidt wrote it right before World War II as he was dying of cancer and it has a truly prophetic feel about it.

The music for the Four Horsemen sequence is amazing. The War sequence contrasts a lamenting women's chorus with a brutal, vicious men's chorus based on a rhythmic figure that is pounded home. It's truly terrifying. This is followed by a heartbreaking mother/child duet describing the Horseman of Famine. The last horseman, Death, features two worn-out soldiers commenting about the last horsemen to music which aptly describes a silent, body-ridden battlefield.

The Amazon reviewer suggests that this is tuneless, but that is inaccurate. The melodies used are designed for contrapuntal development of which there is plenty. You won't soon forget the War chorus, I guarantee.

This performance is terrific, although with such a complicated piece some of the details get lost in the shuffle. Nevermind. Get this and be blown away by the end of the world and the coming heavenly kingdom. The power (& terror) of this music might just make you reconsider religion.

      5 out of 5 stars B stands for Boss.......2001-02-12

This album is for people who love conscious lyrics, foot stepping rhythms and something unexpected. There is a tune for every vibe. Anthony B speaks without fear of the wicked who would like to control him. He touches the heart of the righteous and satisfies the fervour of the militant. The melodic tracks wash over and I am made to think and consider the truths of which he speaks. Poverty, exploitation and injustice which Anthony B would tackle with the consious leaders he names as part of his Rasta government. No less passionate than Sizzla or Capleton, with every track a gem, Anthony B is the Boss.

This CD brings us a true superproduction of excellent Russian liturgical music, exquisitely performed by a large choir of men and boys. But unfortunately many of the louder passages are plagued by severe overload distortion which detracts quite a lot from the listening joy. Without this technical flaw, this album would have earned 5 stars.

              Product Description

The Seven Seals from Germany, are a fresh take on industrial music, made popular by fellow German artists such as Rammstein and Joachim Witt. This debut album features 14 rich tracks that are both hard-hitting and melodic. Martin von Auen's deep vocals balance perfectly with strong guitar riffs and powerful orchestra accompaniments. The songs on "1" are a combination of original tunes as well as exciting new interpretations of other well-known songs. Disco group, Boney M's "Daddy Cool" gets turned into a pulse pounding industrial classic, while the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under The Bridge" becomes a heartwarming ballad with guest vocalist Sybille. Even Frank Sinatra's classic "My Way" (lyrics by Paul Anka) is turned into a rousing rock anthem. Joachim Witt, who authored the second track "Herbergsvater" was thoroughly impressed with The Seven Seals treatment of his song. So much so, that he personally called to thank them for it. This album also features a number of guest artists including: Sybille, Terrel Woodbury and Patrick Weide. Now's your chance to grab this album that is sure to become a classic! Track List: 1. Amadeus (by Falco) 2. Herbergsvater (by Joachim Witt) 3. Tage Wie Dieser 4. Es ist Vorbei (feat. Sybille) 5. Daddy Cool (by Boney M) 6. Ich Weine (by Patrick Bowien) 7.
