Dimmu Borgir aren't fooling anyone who knows Emperor and Enslaved as to the true origins of its basic musical plan. Judging by the group's popularity, legitimacy doesn't really matter. In a field overrun by erratic innovators, Dimmu Borgir are a friendly face to fans who stumbled into the catacombs of black metal by way of Cradle of Filth's comical casino. So, as this gigantic gaggle of evil keyboard-wielding Yanni spawn increasingly represents the marketable side of Norwegian black metal, the more enormous and slick grows their sound. With significant melodic classical influence and lots of five-dollar words, the digital jesters construct huge plastic cathedral-sized heavy metal dance halls for the purpose of desecrating virtual-reality saints. Goons gurgle, hounds howl, fret boards flutter furiously, choirs complain to the heavens, and tiny gateways to Hades blink open and shut. It's all devilishly dirty, and in the end nobody gets hurt. --Ian Christe

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!!!!.......2007-03-10

An old friend suggested this album to me, and although I'm not a huge black metal fan, I gave it a shot. I was totally blown away by the musicianship on this album. What a beautifully crafted album!!!! This will not be my last Dimmu Borgir album purchase. I'm hooked!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2007-02-09

This album is just a random mixture of thrashing guitars, classical keyboard notes, The cookie monster verse vocals, and a melodic vocal chorus by some female dubbed voice. I don't understand the overall appeal. The music is entertaining at times but, there arent any parts that sound unique or interesting. It's pretty much a segment of things you would have heard on other metal albums mixed together to create an epic effect on each song. I can listen to it and get some enjoyment but, it doesnt do anything to inspire or enlighten my musical appetite.

5 out of 5 stars another great dimmu album.......2006-10-24

for those who say they hate dimmu and they are too keyboard driven guess what they are a MELODIC BLACK METAL BAND i find dimmu a great band and all must give them respect for the lace they are at now and they have great music

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT album from a VERY talented Black Metal band!!!!!.......2006-08-08

After reading several reviews on Dimmu Borgir and the constant comparisons to Cradle Of Filth I felt I should write a review and set the record straight.Although I absolutely love both bands and they Do have a similar sound, they are actually quite different in many ways. Take this album for instance "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia" has a much more industrial thrash sound than most of Cradle's releases.Shagrath also has a much more brutal deeper tone than Dani Filth (who is also a Terrific Black Metal singer and one of My personal favorites!!).The vocals have more of a Immortal "Blizzard Beasts" feeling to them than a Cradle feeling. Also the clean vocals done by Bassist Vortex are really impressive and remind you of the operatic feeling of Emperor or maybe King Diamond. The background keyboards are really the only comparison I see to Cradle Of Filth,These a are two VERY talented bands but VERY different(PLEASE NOTE: Emperor ALSO uses keyboards too for album atmosphere, but there are ALOT of other Black Metal artists that do too without being compared to another band in the same genre). Now on to the album review...This album from start to finish is both beautiful and Brutal. The musicianship on this release is outstanding in ALL areas and the production and sound quality of this recording is completely top notch and crystal clear(unlike most older Black Metal albums You can actually hear the punch of the Bass lines and the Guitars don't get muddled in the mix while it still retains a haunting atmosphere and gets the point across). Some major highlights of this album are: track #2 "Blessing Upon The Throne Of Tyranny", track #4 "Hybrid Stigmata Apostasy", track #5 "King Of The Carnival Creation"(GREAT SONG!!),and track #6 "Puritana". All in all the whole album is outstanding but these particular tracks really stand out among the rest.If Your new to Dimmu Borgir or a fan of Black Metal bands like: Cradle Of Filth, Emperor, Immortal, or even a Thrash Metal fan of such bands like Slayer or DEATH I highly reccomend You check out this release!! I have a feeling You will NOT be dissapointed in the least way what so ever.If You enjoy this album be sure to check out Dimmu's other releases like: "Death Cult Armageddon" and the new re-recorded and re-mastered version of "Storm Blast 2006 with bonus DVD"(featuring Hellhammer from Mayhem on drums)."Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" is also an excellent choice too! A fantastic Black Metal album from a VERY talented band and definitely one NOT to be missed!! I hope My review was helpful to You. For more reviews on other great bands (ie: C.O F.,DEATH,Emperor,Slayer,King Diamond) be sure to check out My other reviews.Long Live METAL and Dimmu Borgir!

3 out of 5 stars Yet another review.......2006-02-24

Is Dimmu Borgir cheesy? Yes. But you have to figure that all of metal (inculding black metal) has a fair amount of self-parody and cheese written right into the framework of it. Trve black metal was a bunch of Norwegian kids who heard Venom, thought it was for real, watched a bunch of horror movies and set out to make "evil" music. I love Emperor, Darkthrone, Bathory, etc. This doesn't mean I can't listen to DB too. Think of it as one more CD to put on your shelf, to broaden your metal world view. Making a polished, ecletic CD like this one isn't a bad thing. It's just one more take on the cheesy "evil" formula that we all know and love.

It's funny that Dimmu Borgir even gets thrown in with Black metal though. They're such a mash-up of bands. Every time I listen to this album it reminds me of any album by Fear Factory. There are so many industrial elements: flangers, slowed down samples that sound like they came from Hellraiser, electronicy keyboards, choir vocals...Other influences DB brings to mind for me are Die Krupps (for assorted industrial sounds) and the vocals of Dave Mustaine (seriously, a few sections of this record always makes me say "Is that Dave?!")

And finally, there's some discussion here about whether Dimmu Borgir is mainstream. Um, you're about to buy it on AMAZON.com, so what do you think?

5 out of 5 stars blackmetal assault of the new mellenium.......2001-03-28

I've been a fun of dimmu borgir from the beginning from there very first realease up to now. Nothing seems to amaze me, sure they have a couple of line up changes but honestly this line up for me is the most intense. with Nicholas on drums(ex-cradle,galder on guitar(old man's child frontman). there is no sign this blackmetal veterans shows of slowing down. "puritanical euphoric misantrophia" is one of the best cd for this year...if i where you if you see any dimmu cd on store i sugget you grab it...buy it and listen to it until the day you die....its to die for
