Great album . . . and unexpectedly relevant.......2007-05-12
The rest of the reviews have captured the spirit of the band very well and i will not attempt to explain who MF are or why they are a band worth owning.
I came here to write a review of a song that's all too relevant to today's world. The final track on the album (Gulf War Song) is most unfortunately, as relevant today as it was 15 years ago when it was first written, and that's kind of depressing. It popped up while listening to music at work today and i had to stop and hear the whole song through 3 or 4 times.
"Fighters for Texaco
Fighters for Power
Fighters for longer turns in the shower"
Fruvous has always had an amazing way with words. The song FLY is a great example of this. I'm sure Moxy had hoped that Gulf War Song would be a reaction and possibly an postlog to a short, somewhat contraversial military conflict in the early 90's. They could never imagine that it would become even more relevant over a decade later, and stay that way (seemingly) indefinitely.
I'm monumentally suprised this hasn't become a more popular song in light of recent events. Even if you can't afford the album, go buy the song somewhere. If you're lucky, it won't make you cry.
Moxy Intoxy.......2007-01-23
This is the best Moxy Fruvous CD. I love the wide range of sound and style used. It probably doesn't help that this was the disk I was inducted into the Moxy ways. Pick it up, you wont put it down.
King of Spain.......2006-05-23
This is a wonderful album. If you've never heard of them, it's because they are Canadian.
I absolutely love their tonality and bounce. While there's already so much to like right there, remember, too, that they are original and unsentimental without being depressing.
It is listenable and fun. If you like this one, make sure you check out their other albums, too.
Moxy Früvous - Bargainville.......2004-05-19
moxy fruvious is a great band ! some of there later albums are serious, sad or rhetorical. Barganville being there first album is full of youthful zing, I really can not explain the power of the un-polished/tainted early years of any band.
What the heck is a fruvous, and why is it moxy?.......2003-11-19
I am addressing this review to you.
You have never heard of this band before. You were just browsing around on-line and you came across this page. Or you heard the name "somewhere", you can't remember where, and you came here to check it out.
You're desperately searching for that next album you can fall hopelessly in love with. You want to learn all the words. You want to sing them at the top of your voice. You want an album that you can hardly even listen to *without* singing along.
You want to find your new favorite band. You want them to have a deep back catalog from which you can slowly but surely fill out your collection, and you want to be shocked over and over again with each additional disc you buy to find that you love it as much as the first.
You're sick to death of artists who got famous based on their hipness, their image. Shouldn't musicians have to have *talent* to sell records?, you lament. You don't necessarily want a band to be dorky, but you want them to not care whether you think they're dorky or not, and just make great music.
You may or may not be a fan of They Might Be Giants, but you've heard their more "quirky" songs, and you aren't put off by them.
You love the Beatles.
You don't want "epic soundscapes" or "phat beats" or any kind of soulless genre exercise. You hunger for the kind of band where every song they release is unique and special and worthy of your love.
Maybe you're six years old. Maybe you're sixty.
I think you know where this is going.
Moxy Fruvous is the band you're looking for! And Bargainville is their best album. It's an excellent cross-section of all the many things that make them a truly great band.
I cannot believe that music like this can be had for ...bucks.

This is the REAL Spinal Tap!!.......2007-06-09
This is a funny CD. I missed hearing these guys in their heyday, and after reading all the glowing reviews (Amazon is very crafty and doesn't put up any tracks that can be listened to; hmmmmmm...) I decided to get a copy. I haven't stopped laughing since!! Their name should be Chupzhah!! The "songs" take a little Zep here, a little Sabbath there, and throw in a pinch of every metal cliche of that era. And the less said about Buzz Shearman's "singing", the better. His vocals don't even rise to the level of pedestrian. When I read that some bonehead DJ in San Antonio used to play the hell out of these guys, I should have been wary. Still, if you wanna get a good chuckle, this is a band for you. Extra points for the unbelievably stupid lyrics.....
Rockin' Album.......2006-11-23
One of the most underrated Canadian bands of the 70's. I wore this album out when I had it. Even had the chance to meet the guys and party with them in the 70's and still count this album as one of my all time faves. RIP Buzz.
The Nickelback of the 70's.......2006-11-11
When you consider that this band was from the 70's and things were done a lot different then you have to appreciate the excellent quality of this album(cd). Moxy was a Canadian bar band that came very close to breaking it big but back than it was a lot harder to be heard. They rocked as hard as anybody and their songwriting and musicianship was excellent. I my opinion this album(cd) could be the best debut of any Canadian rock artist ever. I am glad I now own the cd and have downloaded it to iTunes. Thanks for the great music boys. Long live Buzz!!!!
Very uninspired Album--very flat and hollow.......2006-10-27
This is a typical heavy metal album of the seventies but the songs are not at all interesting and get very boring on second listen. The singer is fair but the guitar players play the same riffs over and over again. Very unoriginal and uninspiring. I was going to try out the other Moxy albums but upon listening to this, their very 1st album--I decided not even to try. Rock and Roll collectors avoid this album at all costs!!!!!!
Listen to CrazyChefJoe in Boise........2005-06-30
Born and raised in San Antonio. This is required listening for anyone wanting to hear great rock n' roll. Many memories of playing air guitar in my room with headphones on back in the late 70's.
Legendary S.A. DJ Joe Anthony pounded MOXY into our heads, along with Triumph, Killer Dwarfs and early Rush.
Buy it, keep it and pay it forward.

You Will Go To The Moon.......2006-05-23
I worked in Northern New Hampshire with a transplanted Canadian who was really fond of these guys. When I asked her why she liked them so much, she could only say, "Because they're so Canadian!."
I think she's absolutely right. If you buy this album, you'll be charmed by the band's relentless charm and optimism, despite their generally unsentimental approach.
By far, my favorite cut is "You Will Go To The Moon." This song captures so much self-assurance and technological optimism. Gotta love it...
I know what moxy is, by the way, from the late 1950s. But Fruvous...
Go to the moon-and love it........2005-02-07
After discovering Fruvous in 2004, I had already missed all their live shows, and all their albums had come out. I first heard them on "Bargainville," then "b," and I loved Fruvous instantly. Their incredible vocal, lyrical, and instrumental talents make almost every song they ever recorded amazing. After listening to 'ville and b, I was content for awhile, because I didn't realize they even had any other albums released. Boy, was I happily suprised. Next I purchased "Live Noise" -the essential album for anyone who has never seen a live fruvous show (including myself)- and was even more amazed with their improv and hilarious between song banter. A few days ago, i got "You Will Go To The Moon." I love it. I think it is one of their best albums, with a mix of satire, silliness, and bittersweet melodies-almost everything that makes Moxy Fruvous so incredibly wonderful and unique. It starts out with "Michgan Militia." This is a song you will have in your head all day, and will captivate you from the amazing inroductory riff. Next is "Get in the Car," a fun romp. Skipping down to "Sahara," you hear a middle-eastern influenced melody and captivating lyrics, sung by MIke Ford. After Sahara is "Lee." This is quite possibly one of my favorite Fruvous songs. It has a hauntingly beautiful melody, with a slow, lyrical mood that is incredible. Dave Matheson is amazing on lead vocals, and brings emotion to this track. "No No Raja" is another middle-eastern influenced track, with Jian on lead, with a great melody. "The Incredible Medicine Show" is a song about plastic surgery, in a nutshell. But the vocals are really blended and make it enjoyable, and fun if you enjoy that sort of Fruvous. "Your New Boyfriend" is just funny. Right-wingers may not enjoy it, for a reason that is apparent in the lyrics "your new boyfriend's a bit...of a right wing @&$!" But other than that, it is hilarious, if the lyrics in the chorus don't bother you. It is also a bit Beatles-esque. "Boo Time" isn't really a purposeful song...but the beat is infectious, making it another of my favorites from this album. The bass drum and the saxaphone (played by Dave) give it a fuller sound than the version I heard on "Live Noise." "Love Set Fire" is a song that puts me right on the fence. The lyrics are good, and the melody is good, but it is sort of slow and stark. The title track, "You Will Go To the Moon," is really good. Some people don't like it, but the vocals and harmonies make it a favorite of mine, and a great way to round out a wonderful CD. Fruheads will love it, and it is also a wonderful introductory album for people who want a taste of the many sides of Moxy Fruvous.
in response to Michael B Baer.......2004-03-19
I think your review says more about the reviewer than the product. Although you are quite right that Michigan Militia refers to an American phenomenon, the other songs you mention do NOT. Perhaps you think all conservatives are American (Your New Boyfriend)? Or only we get plastic surgery (Incredible Medicine Show)? I have to admit that Canadians aren't going to the moon on their own any time soon. However, the song (You Will Go To The Moon) is still not a specific critique of American lunar landings, but the general (and international) phenomenon of exploiting space, and the pointless pursuit of Progress for its own sake. Imperialism, you say? Not once did they mention conquest or colonies, so you are misusing that term.
As for the forementioned Michigan Militia, did you know that there actually IS a Michigan Militia? They are one of the most prominent right-wing militias in the 'States. Not only that, but being in Michigan they are proximate to Canada, so no doubt the Canadians may be more aware of them than they are of other such groups. Now this critique is squarely aimed at Americans, but I hesitate to call it 'anti-American'; not all criticisms of America reflect anti-Americanism, whether issued by natives or foreigners. Personally, I am not a fan of these groups, so at least they are not part of MY America.
Nevertheless, confusing those other songs for anti-American rhetoric demonstrates an embarrassing cultural egocentricity on YOUR part (I'm not going after America, just you).
That being said, this is an excellent album. We already know that Moxy Fruvuous are masters of vocal harmony and catchy songs, and their lyrics alternate between the overtly political and purely whimsical. However, on this album they tackle a wide variety of musical styles, including Indian and Arabian music (No No Raja for the former, the standout Sahara for the latter). I bought this album not long after it came out, and it still gets spins in my player (or rather has a place on my winamp playlists).
Some people won't be able to enjoy this music. If you're conservative, it is understandable that you will find the politics annoying and disagreeable. Some people will be turned off by the whimsical style of Moxy Fruvuous, especially the kids who can't enjoy a song unless someone gets lyrically shot or ass-raped, or the eternal angst of suburban youth finds its voice. However, if you like straight-up melodies, endeniable hooks and artists who don't take themselves too seriously, this is the stuff.
Good to The Last Drop.......2001-12-25
YWGGTM, I must admit, is my favorite früvous album - and I own them all! For those of you who have not yet heard Früvous, you don't know what you're missing... for those of you who have, you know their incredible range of style. From the upbeat - ("King of Spain", My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors) to the beautifully bittersweet ("Fly", "Sad Girl"), and of course the witty political commentaries (The Greatest Man in America, The Ballad of Cedric Früvous and many more!) Früvous combines musical genius with engaging, clever lyrics... who could ask for more?
This album combines the best of it all. From the very first note (the opening riff of Michigan Militia is unforgettable) to the exotic sounds of "Sahara" and "No No Raja", the haunting melody and sweet vocals of "Lee", the beatles-esque "Get in The Car" and "Your New Boyfriend" (beatles with a kick, I might add) every song on You Will Go To The Moon is a listening experience and well worth every minute!
Another Excellent Moxy Früvous CD!.......2001-06-02
I first heard of Moxy at a dance where they played King of Spain and The Drinking Song. Mesmerized by these 2 excellent songs, I ran out and got Bargainville (Moxy's Best) and later purchased Live Noise.
Well...when I saw this CD for 5 bucks in a pawn shop, I had to get it. Not as good as Bargainville but better than Thornhill. Yes, it is pretty scathing to the US but come on! If you cant laugh at your country, who can you laugh at? Another great CD.
Now if only Moxy Früvous would come to Vancouver...

TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT.......2002-02-11
This is the second valiant effort from Canada's Moxy. Unlike their first release this disc contains much more straight forward rock without the nice ballads. My favorite Moxy song ever is here, "Take It or leave It", which was also released as a single. It, like Moxy, didn't fair well commercially. That success is important for a band to make it, but for those fortunate enough to see a band and get their music, it is hard to understand that lack of success. It is unfortunate, but most stations have program directors that wouldn't know good music if it came with a warning label stating it was!
Moxy released some great music in their short lifespan and it is good to see it out on CD. If you have never heard Moxy try them. They have great guitar work, screeching vocals, and an excellent sound that has survived the 70's. Some other great tunes on the disc include "Through the Storm", "Wet Suit", and "Change in My Life". Don't let the opportunity to grab a cult classic pass you by; show the world you've got Moxy!
Good 1970's style Rock-N-Roll/Hard Rock.......1999-06-27
This band hails from Canada and their whereabouts are now unknown. I heard their material for the first time over the radio in 1975. The band was very talented in that they performed ballads, hard rock, and disco/hard rock mixes.

Great compilation from an underrated band.......2006-04-23
Self-Destruction is a 1994 compilation on the Pacemaker lable that collects material from Moxy's first three albums. Moxy was a mid-70's hard rock band from Toronto with a slick, pre-hair metal sound similar to Angel, Starz, and countrymen Prism. Moxy never really caught on outside of Canada (and for some reason San Antonio, TX), but they are worth seeking out if you're a classic rock fan, and Self-Destruction is a good place to start. The last two tracks are from guitarist Buddy Caine's solo band.
The track listing is as follows:
1. Can't You See I'm a Star
2. Out of the Darkness
3. Sail On Sail Away
4. Fantasy
5. Moonrider
6. Cause There's Another
7. Change in My Life

Album Description
"No Standing" is the Boston-based SuperHoney's second release. The latest effort captures both studio and live performances. The live recordings -- culled from performances at the legendary Bill's Bar and the Berklee Performance Center -- capture the essence of the SuperHoney sound and features the Bill Wither's classic "Use Me" as well as SuperHoney staples "Swatty," "Nasty," "The Road," "Wait For You," and "Take Me Just As I am." The studio tracks range from the acoustic soul ballad "It All Depends" to an instrumental ("1-2-7")to the percolating funk of "Above the World."

Another amazing band from Boston.......2001-06-17
I'm a fan of Superhoney after just 2 kickass live shows. I just bought their CD today, which is great, but decidedly less energetic than their live shows. If you're in the Boston area, look for them. JP Flynn has one of the best voices I've heard in a long time, and the other musicians in the band are incredibly talented.
Effing Rocks.......2000-11-15
Love at first sound. First heard this kickass band at Harper's Ferry. It is too bad I had to move away from Boston. I am missing the music and the culture. Suburban Maryland...nuh said. Superhoney brings me back to Boston in that very special way. You know what I mean baby.
Soul Diva Extraordinaire.......2000-06-16
Whoa Daddy, what to say about this bunch of Boston rockers. The lead singer is a diva in the making. Pipes that make Sherlock proud. The band kicks out the jams like James Brown at a soccer match. Both of their CD's are awesome, with their live show being second to NONE.
The Band's Da Bomb.......2000-02-29
Can I just say that Superhoney is on track to take it al the way. Forget about conquering Boston or New England, this outfit aspires to inspire. And inspire they do. With a vengeance. I loved their debut EP so much, but this latest CD (No Standing)effort is a more mature, wide-ranging, winner-take-all effort. The CD captures the high energy of their live performances and the subtle song-writing skills of it's talented members. Joanie (the lead singer)has talent bereft in most major Label performers of her ilk. Really. This band won't be unknown for much longer. Jump on the gravy train before it's too late.
Boston's Best.......2000-01-05
I stumbled on the band Superhoney about a year ago while they were playing on the island of Nantucket. They blew me away! It's tough to find their recordings as they don't have a major label deal: yet! So thanks to amazon.com for carrying this great band. The new record has live recordings including a couple of tracks from their first CD which is not offered on amazon.com. And it goes without saying, if you are from the Northeast US, you must SEE this band to believe it. The singer is OUT OF THIS WORLD! [to the band -- if you read this -- keep it up, look forward to seeing you guys on Nantucket soon]

Moxy Wears Their Infuences on this Album.......2006-08-11
4 Star = Classic
I first heard of Moxy in the mid 70's, & for a couple of years held off of buying anything, not because I didn't like them (I really didn't have an opinion), but I was to busy buying other artists I was much more familiar with. Then one day I picked up "Under the Lights." I was anxious to hear it because I'd thought so long to buy a Moxy album. Boy did I buy the wrong Moxy album!!! I think I spun it once or twice, & then wrote them off.
Around 1980 I was over at a friends house & spied Moxy ""Ridin' High." I was curious to hear how this album stacked up as compared to "Under the Lights." My friend put it on his turntable & I was very pleasantly surprised on how good "Ridin' High" was. I made a mental note to pick up this album, but soon it was in the back of my mind, & it was 25 years later that I finally got around to buying it!
When "Ridin' High" arrived in the mail I eagerly played it. The first thing that struck was how many of these songs I was familiar with. I really didn't think that these songs would have ingrained their selves in my mind after so many years, but they surely did! Second thing I noticed is how much Moxy sounded like different bands, but not quite the same. The biggest example of this was "Rock Baby" who's guitar riff intro sounded almost exactly like Ted Nugent "Stormtroopers," then it veered off in a different direction, but Ted's aura hung on thickly. The third thing I noticed is that even if many of these songs did not sound original, they were fueled with high energy, addicting riffs, good melodies & vocals. I especially liked "Long Legs" an early funk/metal song that sounded like a combination of Tommy Bolin's "Teaser" & any numerous Pat Travers funk/metal monsters. "Long Legs" is one smokin' track! "Nothing Comes Easy" is also very memorable, a true road warrior song with great hooks. This song also reminds me of someone else's work, Foghat's, "Fool for the City." Some of the vocal melody line is almost identical; example; "Nothing comes easy" = "Going to the city," from "Fool for the City." Yes, Moxy does sound like a multitude of bands, but they seemed always to manage to pull it off on "Ridin' High" with out direct plagiarism.
"Ridin' High" is a very enjoyable album. One that sinks its hooks into your brain, even though you feel like you might have been here before, they feel like an old friend your getting re-acquainted with after a long absence. "Ridin' High" has spurred me on to considering picking up their first two albums, which I understand are also very good. I just don't know if I got another 25 years to wait!
Awesome Hard Rock!!!.......2005-06-21
I'm so happy that there are a few other people alive who know about MOXY and love their 'Ridin' High' album. I first heard this album in the summer of 1977, cruising around with my friend looking for girls!! We played this constantly in his cassette deck. At the time my favorite bands were Kiss and Deep Purple, but Moxy had that extra hard edge that was pure ear candy to me. When my friend moved away that fall, I traded my Deep Purple/Burn album for 'Ridin' High'...best trade ever!!!
I know these songs, every one of them, so well that it's hard to pick a favorite - every track rocks and I love them all! I guess if I had to pick my favorite it would be the "slow" song, Another Time Another Place, which still has great lyrics/vocals, guitar and drums. The addition of a piano on this song adds a great touch. I always wanted to slow dance to this with my favorite sweetheart. A very close number two would be 'Are You Ready' - just don't get your DJ confused with the song of the same title by AC/DC! There is no filler, and this album is just pure great 70's hard rock!!
GET BUZZED WITH MOXY....70'S HARD ROCK LEGENDS.......2005-05-17
MOXY was one of those great bands that never got the recognition they deserved. Soundwise, MOXY was similar to Speranza-era RIOT but with heavier production values. "Ridin' High" from 1977 was MOXY's third album, following MOXY and MOXY II. Of the three, "Ridin' High" is the heaviest with tracks like 'Sweet Reputation','Ridin'High',and 'Rock Baby' edging into the realm of great early metal. Lead vocalist Buzz Shearman was a great frontman who unfortunately died far too young. His vocals on the first three MOXY albums are legendary. The guitar work on "Ridin' High" is excellent and sure to get you rocking out with your trusty air-guitar. MOXY is an essential band for fans of RIOT, LEGS DIAMOND, PAT TRAVERS, TEAZE, and even fans of bands like THIN LIZZY and UFO. In my opinion MOXY was the best band from Canada in the 70's, tied with MAX WEBSTER and followed by RUSH. Shell out a few bucks, buy "Ridin' High"(or one of the first two MOXY albums), get a little weed or coke, get comfortable, crank it up, and rock baby....with one of the best bands of the 70's, MOXY!!!!! Long live Buzz Shearman!!!!! GB.I.P.(Get Buzzed In Peace) you legend!!! Thanks for the classic tunes!!!
moxy -hard rock fans opinion.......2003-11-03
These guys are great! I've been around and seen over 76 concerts and listened to alot of want-a-be's and these guys are
really a great band. Why they didn't get the air play and recognition is beyond me. My friend introduced me to this band and I loved this album. Another time, another place and ridin high were my favorites. Buy it and enjoy a really good band.
Moxy's Best.......2003-04-14
RIDING HIGH is Moxy's best album ever. It features great hard rockers, hot guitar work, and a totally unique lead singer in Buzz Shearman. It's a shame these guys aren't better known. This is the first album you should get by this group.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD.......2001-04-06
The 1969 Woodstock has passed its torch to the Falcon Ridge and Newport Folk Festivals. On this cd we get introduced to the American version of the Cranberries-The Nields, the new Folk Queen-Dar Williams, the Byrds influenced-Kennedy's and a host of good modern singer/ songwriters-Greg Brown,Richard Shindell and Vance Gilbert. "Falcon Ridge" has moments, but no knockout punch. The breathy Patty Larkin "Open Arms" comes close.
A sample of the best of the festival........2000-03-25
I shouldn't say that this music is the best. After ten years of holding the festival, this is just a very small part of all of the wonderful music that has been happening at Falcon Ridge. I have been exposed to so many great artists that I wouldn't have heard anywhere else. Even though it is a folk festival, it is an exposure to all different kinds of music. Hopefully by listening to this compliation, people in the northern east coast area will want to attend this yearly festival, see falconridgefolk.com and find that this wonderful music is as good as the live music.I rate this very high as I was at all of the events as they were recorded and they bring back wonderful memories.

Moxy ~NOT!!!.......2006-05-03
This release is without the drummer and lead singer who died before this was released. There is a big difference with bill ward and buzz in the band! Even on the bands web site [...] you will see that they do not consider this a real Moxy cd!!There is no comparison of the real Moxy to this cd! Buy the original 3 cd's and the 2 come back ones which will put this to shame!
Will the real Moxy step forward?.......2001-12-20
A false Moxy band and only known by a true real Moxy fan. Although Michael Rynoskis vocals are clean it just doesn't fit in the Moxy mold. But then this isnt Moxy, this is a band that was left with the Moxy name and was forced by the record company to put out some radio play material. Missing the raw vocals that made the band by Buzz Sherman and founding member drummer Bill Wade shows a totally different band with a name of a hard rockin band of the past. Go to Canada or texas and any real true Moxy fan wont even recognize this as a Moxy album.

This record is hard rock at it's best. At the time of it's release it led the pack of other rock relaeses. Strong song writing and well crafted production put this work well above the rest. Being a working rock musician at the time i found a refreshing view of playing guitar and writing from this album and still listen to it constantly today. This cd is a must for any rock singer, guitar player,or anyone else who loves great rock music that stands above most of the so called rock music being released today. Listen, learn, and enjoy.

The Unknown Canadian Band.......2001-08-23
This album has been a Blast to listen to, over and over. I first heard it on the Mercury Record Label, when it was released in '78. It is a solid Rock Album, from a little known Canadian Band. "High School Queen", and "Under the Lights", will blow you away. This is Mike Reno's first major vocals in a Rock Band. He went on to be a Big Hit, for the Band, "Loverboy". Reno's Vocals match the power in Buzz Shearman's vocals. Buzz was the original Vocalist, but died a short time before this album was made. If you want to hear Buzz on Vocals, try the "MOXY-Self Destruction" CD. I have been looking for this Album, since 1981. I am glad it is finally being reissued on CD.

Thornhill.......2006-05-23
The title refers to a very old brand of high-end hi-fi equipment. It was known for its "smooth" sound.
That's this album, for sure, yeah. It is very, very smooth and lots of fun.
And a little retro, too. Some of it sounds a lot like late-60s rock and roll, especially the keyboards.
Very listenable - lots of fun, like all the Fruvous stuff...
Grows on you like a Lovely Fungus.......2004-04-08
Being a gigantic Moxy Fruvous fan myself, I was disappointingly suprised when I first heard Thornhill. I thought to myself "This isn't the Fruvous I grew to love from B and Bargainville!" Wha' Happen'?" But then, I lent this CD to my friend, about two years ago. And he has yet to return my copy. I began to miss this CD so much, that's how good it is. It simply grows on you. It shows how versatile a group Fruvous is; they don't simply tickle your funny bone, but they are poignant and harmonius. Earthquakes will be in your head all day, as will Sad Girl and Downsizing. Long story short, I had to buy a new one, and it was worth it. Better than pirating a copy. Fruvous needs money too. If you are a fan of Fruvous, of music, or of life in general, Thornhill is a must-have that will grow on you over time.
Worth taking the time to appreciate........2003-07-26
I admit: the first time I listened to Thornhill, I was a bit dubious. It didn't have anything like the wacky wit or catchy melodies of previous Fruvous albums (except for "Splatter Splatter," which has both in abundance).
To my surprise, the album grew on me over time. I found myself humming "Hate Letter" while driving to work. The more I listened to the album, the more I came to appreciate it. "Sad Girl"'s lyrics nicely walk the balance between serious and sarcastic, and "Earthquakes!" has an undeniable groove. The romantic side of me likes "I Will Hold On," and "If Only You Knew," and the Fruhead in me loves the inevitable puns that appear even in Fruvous' ballads ("I'll hold your breath if that won't make you blue").
I wouldn't recommend this album to someone new to Fruvous, but fans shouldn't overlook it; there's hidden gold in here.
absolutely amazing- if you give it a chance.......2002-10-14
Thornhill isn't something that you can listen to once and appreciate. In that aspect, it's very much like Wood. Every Fruvous album is different, and it takes a while to shed your preconceived notions of what you wanted it to be and to accept what it is.
I hated Thornhill the first time I listened to it, but I liked it a little the second time. The third time I grew rather fond of it, and by the fourth time I was belting out lyrics. It was my car tunes for several months. If you're looking for fun tunes- listen to 'b' or 'c'- but Thornhill is thoughtful, wistful, romantic, political- all wrapped up in four part harmonies and general fruvousness. Out of all of the songs, I think, the only one I don't particularly like is When She Talks.
Take my advice- listen to it a lot before you make up your opinion.
Don't bother with the bland CD.......2001-12-23
I found this CD incredibly disapointing. I bought it at the same time as B and there could not be more of a difference between the two. Thornhill is full of songs that seem a little more pop-ish than is normal for Moxy Fruvous, though what I believe to be their true character does shine through on a few songs. Over all the CD is slow and rather bland, many of the songs are not memerable and they seem to flow together in my head. Compared to the outstanding quality of the other albums of their's I have been exposed too this one is almost not worth buying. I would encourage new Fruvous fans to begin with something more exciting and characteristic of Moxy fruvous such as Bargainville or You will Go To the Moon.
