4 out of 5 stars Classic scorps with bonus.......2007-05-14

a classic Scorpions album with the bonus addition of Rudalphs Fantabulous guitar brother Mike. A good extra guitar to replace Uli. This album is a must have for scorp fans.

5 out of 5 stars Not The Commercial Rubbish.......2007-03-27

I agree with the reviewers that give this 5 stars. The thing I really like about the CD/album is that it is down to earth hard rock. If you are a "Rock Me Like A Hurricane" fan, this CD is not for you. There is not one bad song on this one. I love "Is There Anybody There?" As a matter of fact, all the songs kick. Yes, Holiday is a slower song but it has that classic Klaus Meine whaling that is the trademark of the Scorps! Check out Tokyo Tapes, Animal Magnetism, Blackout, In Trance, Virgin Killer, and Hot & Heavy. These are real Scorpion rock albums. There are not for the light of heart "Pop" rocker. They are for the true Head Banger!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Gulp, origins of hair-metal!.......2007-03-09

There is a reason hair-metal came to be and this one of the main ones. It's both a blessing and a curse. This album and it's immediate follow-ups were so good that it couldn't be stopped. Other bands liked it and began to imitate it, soon it became mainstream and every one was doing it...just not as well.

The main difference between this and-hair metal is that this was the source. Scorpions created great songs with fast guitars, ripping solos, good arrangements and great production. By the time Poison, Warrant, Ratt and other posers came along they neutered and formulised it. Gone was the edge and originality. Unfortunately, the Scorpions, too, sold out and went commercial around Love at First Sting and, well, too bad. At least we have this.

There is not one clunker on the album. The sequencing is great and the songs are all different. Another Piece of Meat and Can't Get Enough are balls-out rockers. Lovin' You Sunday Morning and Lovedrive are also pretty heavy and their original power ballads Always Somewhere and Holiday created the formula that so many other bands made careers of ripping off.

I'll always have an appreciation for the heavy bands of the late 70s and the early (pre-84) 80s. They did it right and it's a shame that by the time metal became mainstream the great ones had to sell out or become irrelevant. The other worthwhile albums by Scorpions are Animal Magnetism and Blackout. Great, but in a different vein is Tokyo Tapes.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Sting.......2006-12-22

Scorpions take a giant step forward on this album. Some sources say brilliant, yet eclectic guitarist Uli Jon Roth was already on his way out due to "creative differences", others say the band released him following "Taken By Force". Whatever the case, Scorpions hired relative unknown prodigy Mattias Jabs to take over lead guitar duties...that is, until Scorpions also welcomed back Rudolf Schenker's little brother Michael. Jabs was fired in the middle of recording, but was eventually rehired when Michael eventually cratered. Bringing Michael Schenker onboard was simultaneously a stroke of genius and idiocy by the band. He was a musical genius, but his ousting from UK-based melodic metal band UFO due to substance abuse was well- documented. It was thought Rudolf could keep him in check, but unfortunately, Michael is one of those musical geniuses who periodically, inexplicably, self-destruct. Alas, the lineup that all Scorpions fans had waited years to see was short-lived. Still, his contributions to the album are profound. Despite only getting writing and playing credits on three songs, "Another Piece Of Meat", "Lovedrive", and the groove-laden "Coast To Coast", the playing is brilliant and all three songs remain fan favorites. His impact on the album can not be understated, and most fans feel that having Michael Schenker in the band, even for a short while, was the creative influence that put the German quintet on the road to superstardom. Mattias Jabs, finally a permanent part of the group, makes his presence known on several gems, including the reggae-influenced "Is There Anybody There?" and Scorpions first real power-ballad, "Always Somewhere". Is this their best overall work? Maybe, but I would certainly argue that a some of their later releases, namely `Crazy World', `Savage Amusement', and `Love At First Sting" rank right up there as well.

In this case I have to agree with reviewer William Edwards, who made a point of mentioning the rythym guitar work of Rudolf Schenker. Rudolf brings his axe to the forefront in this, and all future Scorpions releases. It's tough to claim that rythym guitar playing can be called "intricate", but his multi-layered yet complementary layers add a texture and richness that is uniquely Scorpions. If you don't yet own a Scorpions album, this is a great place to start.

A San Diego cover band in 1980 introduced me to Lovedrive and Loving You Sunday morning. I've been a fan ever since, and bought earlier releases. I didn't hear the Scorps on LA radio until Blackout was released several years later. When I raved about the Scorps, people looked at me like I was nuts.

A couple of final things. Rudolf brings rythym guitar work to the forefront in this, and all future Scorpions releases. It's tough to claim that rythym guitar playing can be called "intricate", but his multi-layered yet complementary layers add a texture and richness that is uniquely Scorpions. The fantastic original album cover art featured here was censored for widespread North American release - if you have an original copy in great shape, it's a collector's item.

If you don't yet own a Scorpions album, this is a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the most consistent Scorpions CD ever. Can't go wrong........2004-07-28

This album really began the trend the Scorps would take for the 80s--polished melodic songs with strong guitar riffs and harmony up front. Arguably this was done just for MTV, but the Scorps made their best music during this period, anyway. Many people get hung up on Uli or Schenker, but the rotating guitarists they've had just aren't as important as their songwriting ability. Here is where the songs start to really shine. If you are really into metal history, then their old CDs are worth hunting for, I guess.

Lovedrive, though, really should be lumped in with Blackout, Love at First Sting, et al. That's a compliment. Every song on this disc could've been a hit off either of those albums. "Lovedrive" is probably the highlight here. Buy this one & ignore the other brainless cover.

BTW, this album can commonly be found at Best Buy & other stores, so shop around before you spend more than $12 for it.

3 out of 5 stars Scorpions began to drive on a different musical road.......2003-12-11

"Lovedrive" from 1979 was sort of a musical redirection for Scorpions. New lead guitar player Mathias Jabs took over after Uli Roth and the band started its journey towards a more mainstream approach, even it's not that clear at first sight. The songs are rather good but there's something disturbing that I just can't put my finger on - could it be the production/sound? Songs like "Another piece of meat" and "Lovedrive" are really good but something is missing and I just don't know what it is! With this album, Scorpions recorded the ballads "Always somewhere" and "Holiday" and it's obvious that the guys felt they really found their own way of writing ballads. Compare these tracks with upcoming songs like "When the smoke is going down" and "Still loving you" and you'll see that they are all written in the same fashion. The highlight on this album is the reggae inspired "Is there anybody there?" which shows a different and interesting side of Scorpions. Michael Schenker (ex UFO), who is Rudolf's brother and was a member of the original line up, is doing a guest appearance and playing solo on three songs. If you're a bit picky, be sure to get a copy with this original cover instead of the boring alternative one that has been released (to avoid upsetting people?). It says that this one is remastered but I can't hear any obvious proof that the sound have been improved. And while I'm at it, do not pay too much attention to the lyrics that sometimes are what you would call not of highest quality. But remember - these guys are from Germany.

    5 out of 5 stars A new beginning.......2004-04-09

Lovedrive (1979.) Scorpions' sixth album. The first album to feature Matthias Jabs on lead guitar.

Following the release of their 1978 Taken By Force album, the Scorpions lost a valuable member of their band - the guitar virtuoso known as Ulrich Jon Roth. And thus began a transitional period for the heavy metal greats. During the sessions of their next studio album, they would hire new guitarist Matthias Jabs, fire him, replace him with original lead guitarist Michael Schenker, only to have him depart and end up rehiring Jabs. With their transitional period, did they create an excellent album of new stylings, or one of the blunders of their career? Read on for my review of Lovedrive.

So many changes for one band in just one year, and yet they manage to whip out another excellent album! What are the odds of that? The band kicks things off with one of their very first big hits, Loving You Sunday Morning. This is straight-up classic metal with a slight melodic touch, making for one of their finest tracks ever recorded. And, of course, as with any Scorpions album (or any album by any band, for that matter), the non-hits are equally excellent. Track number two, Another Piece Of Meat, is Led Zeppelin-esque hard rock at its finest. Most of the tracks featured on the album are fast and furious hard power rockers that are sure to please any fan of the genre. One of the finest tracks of this styling is the title track. The band also tries their hand at ballads, one of which is the final track on the album, Holiday. This ballad is an underrated one, far superior to anything they would record in the next decade. All in all, this is one of the band's finest records.

There are two versions of this album, but they differ only in their cover art. One version features the original cover art, which got the band into some trouble due to its explicit nature. The other version features the edited cover art, which is just a black background with the band's logo and a scorpion. Of course, they differ in art only, so it doesn't really matter which one you buy - unless you're some kind of completist.

Lovedrive is a masterpiece of an album. You'll hear many of the band's fans praise this album - and why not? IT RULES! If you're a fan of the band, or you just like good classic power metal, don't hesitate to add this one to your collection.
