5 out of 5 stars Killer thrash metal around Viking themes.......2007-05-28

Not as good as "Hammerheart" by a long shot, but still very, very good. This was my first purchase from Bathory and I was impressed on the first listen. Bathory has their roots in Black Metal and some of that comes out on this record. But, this one is also the first of a trilogy of Viking-themed recordings including "Hammerheart" and "Twilight of the Gods." I was so impressed with what I've heard on this record and "Hammerheart" that I immediately ordered five of Bathory's other albums.

Read an interview with Quorthon in "Lucifer Rising" Gavin BaddeLey's book..He said he was inspired by Comics since he was too young for sex..I found this so sweet that I give him a five on one of his albums and say, hey it's a shame that you had a heart attack at 39. May you live..I will review a little more at a time when I have a fuller knowledge of the wonders of Bathory.Make sure to buy thE tribute cd..

I am 32 old years now, and I remember I hear this album for the first time when I was in high school... I can tell you I have not stopped listening 'til now. This is the best Black Metal Album so far. The atmosphere is unbelievable from the first intro and the classic anthem A FINE DAY TO DIE, then the records takes you to a journey of speed, really fantastic, a lesson on how to play fast and heavy but with endless variants, special mention to GOLDEN WALLS OF HEAVEN amd PACE TIL DEATH that will make you sweat just by listening... and the journey ends with another masterpiece of melancholic roughness with BLOOD FIRE DEATH that ends as the record begins, so by the time it ends, you start feeling addicted to speed and will push play again and again and again. The album is consistent and intense, hard to pick just one song, definitely you have to listen the journey from the beginning to the end every time you play it.

1 out of 5 stars It really does make your flesh crawl.......2003-01-01

Wow. This CD is indescribable. The closest words that could possibly be put to describe this album are on the album itself: read the nonsensical title and you have it for yourself.
From a musical standpoint, a drunken monkey could have made better music. Out of the 12 songs on this CD, there were two that had a somewhat definite melody, and two that had a definite beat, making three-- yes, only three-- less than mediocre songs. The rest sound like a drunk guitar player and someone else shooting someone with a machine gun.
From a lyrical standpoint, I say: what was that again?
Looking at the CD alone, I laughed. The first song sounds like something out of a video game, while the titles resemble random phrases of dark sounding words put together. Here's the 13th song on the album: "Fiery Death Consumes Miserable Demons"
All in all, this album has little, if any value whatsoever.

4 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to give you a heart condition!.......2001-09-09

Finally, an American label has gotten the balls to unleash one of the most underrated, skull-splitting Death Metal bands to the unwitting US masses!! Swedenýs own Fleshcrawl has received marginal success in the past with former label Black Mark, but now, a new world is opened to them in the US with the release of As Blood Rains From The Skyý. On the surface, you may merely pass judgment on them as another bland, faceless SLAYER knock-off DM bandýthat will be your first and last mistake! Fleshcrawl have mastered the craft of creating blistering sonic aggression while retaining the faithful nod to past masters, like SODOM, DESTRUCTION and the aforementioned SLAYER. This band by no means represents the under-achieving and over-exposed New Wave Of Swedish Death Metal, rather they exemplify the harshness and brutal nature of old school DM, when brutality and menace was key! Opting to focus on violent rage rather than scrutinizing melody, Fleshcrawl reminds us of the nature of true Death Metal!! Each track on the disc spews unapologetic wrath and spite towards the ignorance of humanity, while the riffage sweeps you into a whirlwind of lung-collapsing, bone-crushing agony that becomes so addictive, you actually fear to stop the discýeventually sealing your own fate! Guaranteed to give you a heart condition!

5 out of 5 stars AS BLOOD RAINS FROM THE SKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-05-10

I own albums by Chris Rock, Bill Hicks, Dice, George Carlin, Spinal Tap and the Simpsons. This album is just as funny, if not funnier than any material by the aforementioned artists. You see, the absolutely lurid cover art, in combination with the band wearing sunglasses, superimposed over flames with their most metal faces on, AND lyrics like "Let's go f-ing DIE!!!!!" this release approaches a level of comedy not often found in death metal. Or is it found VERY often?

You see, As Blood Rains from the Sky rocks. Now Entombed rocks too. So do Electric Wizard. So do Neck, At the Drive-In, Death, Tool and Coalesce. But there aren't many albums that approach this. OH MY GOD, is this ridiculously AWESOME!!! This album rips like The Crown rips - just with more death. Lots more death. Like The Crown, the lyrics are dispensable, but I'll be damned if the music doesn't rock so good that they could be singing about the easter bunny, and I'd still love it. But seriously, between the absolutely driving double bass drum, guitars that just leave your face in shreds, and vocals that just puke through your head like you just ate old milk with a knife and fork, you can't lose with this album. Man, is the music the best death ever! If you like a mixture of "action un comedy", this is ALL you.

The soul purpose of this is to rock harder than anything - and that it does. No matter what, you should own this if you like completely over the top, bullz out metal - it rocks like only a few others. The cover of Exciter's "Swords of Darkness" is also the best cover song in the history of the world. I actually laugh out loud, I rock so hard. This is real death metal!!!

p.s. the drummer RULES! you air-drummers will have a field day with this non-stop blitz...

5 out of 5 stars Nocturnal Poisoning.......2006-03-03

Cited by most critics and black metallers as Malefic's best work, Nocturnal Poisoning takes you within the deepest, darkest depths of misanthropic black metal. Taking cues from various cult acts, Malefic's music is a maelstrom of beautiful, chaotic hatred. Discordant guitars resonate with ethereal, gothic sounding keyboards to create a foreboding atmosphere of perpetual gloom. Clean arpeggios are played mockingly over layers and layers of Buzum-like fuzz. The drums trudge along buried low in the mix at a mid-tempo pace. Reverb drenched, indecipherable vocals recite lines of loathing for the human race. And, of course, all of this is captured on a low-budget four track recorder. In other words, this is misanthropic, suicidal cult black metal at its very best.....

Unlike Xasthur's other albums, this record has a very strong gothic atmosphere. It reminds me of The Nightside Eclipse. However, the atmosphere in Nocturnal Poisoning is more surreal and dreamlike. The production is, as you should expect, pretty dismal. Everything blends together into an organic beast. And many of the parts, such as the guitars, are very hard to make out by ear. They are distorted at such a high level, not to mention that this music is obsessively/intricately layered. Most people regard Nocturnal Poisoning as Malefic's most significant work. And although this album is really good from start to finish, it is not quite as polished sounding as his future releases.

Overall, this is a fantastic album. It is a pivotal point for Malefic, and a strong representation of some of his best work. For people looking for surreal, abstract, and atmospheric black metal, this is the album to get...

5 out of 5 stars Underrated and underappreciated .......2006-03-12

First of all, The Funeral of Being is an underrated album. The Funeral of Being had a lot to live up to after the fantastic Nocturnal Poisoning, which is still hailed to this day as Malefic's best work. And although I personally believe that this record holds up in comparison to past releases, some people were unsatisfied with this effort and considered it to be a weak follow up. For the most part, Malefic took Xasthur's sound into a completely different direction, so people expecting more of the same will of course be disappointed. On this release Malefic toned down the usage of synths and distorted the guitars even more - creating a more uncanny, dreamlike atmosphere that does not depend on the excessive usage of synthesizers. Other than that, the drums still trudge along buried low in the mix and dreamy arpeggios are still played on top of layers and layers of fuzz and distortion. That is pretty much Xasthur's trademark sound, but it is done differently on The Funeral of Being. While everything in Nocturnal Poisoning seemed far away and distant, The Funeral of Being is more confrontational and in your face.

Overall, I think that this is one of Malefic's most consistent and refined sounding records. It doesn't sound like Nocturnal Poisoning, but it does sound like a perfected version of A Gate Through the Bloodstained Mirrors. The common denominator that links all of Malefic's work together is the guitar work. Once again, Malefic indulges in layering guitars in order to create a wall of sound. It becomes apparent that this is the key element to Xasthur's sound. In the end, Xasthur shows that true black metal is still striving. Of course, the scene is in a weakened state, but bands like Xasthur show that black metal has the ability to evolve.

        Product Description

Well, doing this album justice with my meager words is going to be next to impossible, but I'll give it a shot anyway. If you're a black metal fan, will you like "Heilige Dwazen" from Belgium's LUGUBRUM? Maybe. You had better go in with an open mind and an appreciation for the strange and the eclectic though. "Heilige Dwazen" does rock hard with lots of galloping rhythms, primal (though a bit off the beaten path) guitar tones, and Barditus' gravelly-throat croak vocals. It's not like LUGUBRUM has strayed as far from the black metal path as, for example, ULVER. The frequent use of a saxophone serves as more than an intriguing oddity; it is a central component of the album's sound. Sometimes subtle but more often on par with bass, drums, and guitar, the instrument demands your attention. There are moments when I thought less about a black metal band with a sax and more about the random freak-outs heard on THE STOOGES' "Funhouse" disc (i.e. "We Slyly Sucked Stolen Bread"). The band is at its best when mixing it up, as "At the Base of Their Tail" so aptly demonstrates. When the vocalist breaks from his regular delivery and moves into what seems to be purposeful off-key "singing" on "We Slyly Sucked Stolen Bread", the result is actually quite charming, albeit in a pants-stained-with-piss, drunken sort of way. After four-and-a-half minutes of, uh, "normal" LUGUBRUM musical delivery on "On Anemone Meteorites", the remaining eight minutes consists of an unsettling drone and creepy carnival accordion loop. Have you now figured out that "Heilige Dwazen" is not for everyone? Good. I seriously doubt the band intended for its smartly done and wonderfully grating art to have mass commercial appeal. Good stuff.
