Amazon.com essential recording

Even before her tragic death at 41 (in 1953), Kathleen Ferrier became a legend for her incomparable voice, her simplicity and sincerity of expression, and her indomitable courage. This compilation of recordings originally made in the 1940s includes four arias from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice recorded live in Holland, which show why Euridice was one of her signature roles. Two beautifully sung Handel arias, two sacred songs by Maurice Greene, and delightful duets by Purcell and Mendelssohn (sung in English with another beloved English singer, Isobel Baillie) are greatly enhanced by the inimitable pianist Gerald Moore. But the core of this recording is the Mahler cycle. Here, Ferrier's voice takes on a new warmth and intensity; her deeply inward, direct expressiveness gives the bereaved parent's grief and anguish a devastating impact. Her reading of the last song could be a bit more spooky, but the end is heartbreaking in its submissive resignation. The Vienna Philharmonic and Bruno Walter are in their native element. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Buen documento para conocer y disfrutar a Kathleen Ferrier.......2004-03-27

5 out of 5 stars The incredible Kathleen Ferrier recordings!.......2003-05-20

Voice fans, rejoice -- EMI has finally remastered these recordings and released them as one CD at budget price!
While Mahler's "Kindertotenlieder" would be the chief reason for purchasing this CD right away, it also contains several morsels, equally fascinating. Purcell and Mendelsohn's duets, Handel's arias, Greene's spirituals, and 3 live arias from Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice". In general, particularly Mahler, the sound is nothing short of phenomenal. BUT why could not these engineers do the same for "Orfeo" selections? There's a lot of noise on these. On all the selection Ferrier's exceptionally dark mezzo (or contralto with a huge upper register) shines brilliantly. Of course, Mahler's songs bemoaning the death of children are not an easy listen by any means. But the melodies are amazingly harmonious and Bruno Walter's superb orchestra provides ideal background for them, with Ferrier's voice blending gorgeously with strings. Only Mussorgsky could take a subject such as this and make it so breathtakingly captivating. It's actually frightening in by itself. Gerald Moore (well-known for his collaboration with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau) accompanies expertly on Purcell and Mendelsohn's selections.
It would be a treat to hear Ferrier in more alto repertoire; I am just not sure how many were commercially available at the time. Right now, Vivica Genaux is the leading artist in this area, but it would be fascinating to compare these two.
For the sheer vocal marvel experience, do not delay in getting this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrible Beauty.......2002-11-14

Nothing will change my opinion that Mahler should be approached with caution. Like Wagner, the scale and power of his work means that it is simply not for everyone, but inspite of that, this recording is an indespensible part of any serious music lover's collection. Music like this simply is not made any more, but rather this is a glimpse into a past where artists and not accountants ran the music industry.

Mahler's wife Alma bitterly opposed his setting of Ruckert's Kindertotenlieder to music and considering the death of their daughter soon after, it's doubtful if she ever forgave him for it. But the finished work has an indescribable beauty that Kathleen Ferrier and Mahler's protégé Bruno Walter give full expression to in away that no other interpreter's have even approached. More than 50 years on this is both a lasting tribute to the artists involved and an indictment of the decline in standards since.

5 out of 5 stars What is to say - It's Ferrier..........2002-03-31

I bought the CD for the Kindertotenlieder and that's what I am going to write about (though the rest of the program is equally impressive). Ferrier's Mahler interpretations are always in the 5+ star area. When Walter is accompanying her the results are even better (unlike the case of Klemperer). The first song - Nun Will Die Sonn'... the darkness of the music is so prominent, it's breathtaking. All the rest Kindertotenlieder come in the same fashion. If interested in a release with better sound but not these Olympian contritutors, Janet Baker and Christa Ludwig have made some very good discs

5 out of 5 stars How can you go wrong?.......2001-10-22

I said it before, in my review of the Ferrier/Walter performance of Das Lied von der Erde, recently rereleased by Decca; Ferrier is the authoritative interpreter of Mahler songs--and I have never heard anything to equal this performance of Kindertotenlieder.

5 out of 5 stars Velcome!.......2007-05-04

If you're going to criticize Venom by saying that they lack musical finesse, you might as well criticize Ramones for the same reason. Go ahead - - Venom gladly welcomes such pinheads to the place they should darned well know they can go. And I bet they like Ramones, too.

5 out of 5 stars old school kick a$! metal.......2007-01-25

If you're a fan of old school death and want to hear a huge influence on almost every extreme band than look no further. Venom may not have been the greatest musicians in the world but what they did they did extremely well. Namely pissing alot of parents off and offending every bible thumper that saw this album, notice I say saw and not heard, as I'm sure the holy rollers s?!t themselves when they saw the cover art. When me and my wife were dating her holy roller aunt use to come over to try and "save" me, so I'd slap this cassette (I'm old!) on the stereo and turn it to "11" (ha,ha) you would think she was on fire as fast as she would run out of the house....ahhh memories! anyway, if you like old school thrash, death, black, white purple or whatever color they call it nowadays you need to pick this album up and take it for a spin, give it a few listens and then move on to their second album "Black Metal!!" But probably don't look any farther than that as the magick(?) disapears after that one. Although I haven't listened to "metal black" yet. oh well, some other day. Now I have to get back to playing my cardboard cut out guitar along to number of the beast, c-ya!

1 out of 5 stars Black Metal Made By Sub-par retards.......2006-12-31

Venom are total posers. Anybody who believes the stupid things these "Musicians" say are imbeciles. None of the "songs" on this album are worth remembering because VENOM ARE NOT REALLY SATANISTS! They are posers. They pose as satanists, thats the definition of posers. They did this to trick dumbasses into buying records. Welcome to Hell is a boring listening experience that a 12 year old would find scary. People were stupid back then for believing that Cronos was a satanist. Venom < Warrant

5 out of 5 stars O My.........2006-12-18

This is a bit of a mix of punk and 60's into 70's metal isn't it? I can drink tea with this, it'S Brittish. This is really considered one of the first Satanic bands. If not the first. tongue and cheek songs about tearing babies and is there a line or something about "tearing into her flesh I insist"? Or some such thing on one of their albums? Punk Bass and heavy trippy rock, one of the best albums ever I'm afrAid. A teacher would have been hit in the back of the head with a pencil propelled by a rubber band in the early days of their upbringing..Evil in League with Satan I guess. I Love this, and I'm afraid I have to give it quite a good rating. Tea. I think it's time..

5 out of 5 stars The Godfathers of extreme metal.......2006-09-23

Yes, as you probably know this album kicked started the wonderful genre of extreme metal. So you like Suffocation? You like Emperor? You like SLAYER? If you didn't have this band you might not have those other great bands, Venom are basically the "Atari/Nintendo" of EM. Everything that is METAL is here too; pure evilness, chock full of Satanic lyrics, rebellion and angst, raw production (probably the rawest album at the time in 1981), and even chicks! They took that "live life in fast lane" attitude of Motorhead that I love and added their blend of evil that had never even been fathomed. The album may have a few flaws but it is one of the top 10 most groundbreaking metal albums ever.

These songs are awesome people. First you have Sons of Satan which is evil speed metal goodness, the title track with that seething voice of Cronos and even has a nifty instrumental interlude in Mayhem With Mercy which has a very eerie and ambient feel to it, perhaps it was can be called a precursor to future ambient black metal bands. Other highlights are Poison with sick riffs and great lyrics about being with wh*res (which I have experience with), the early BM classics Witching Hour with it's sweet solo and catchiness and my personal fave here IN LEAGUE WITH SATAN! F*ckin' right doggie! The song comes complete with a backwards Satanic intro, tribal-like drums, and slow brooding riffs. I literally feel I'm 'south of heaven' when this song is one. One last thing worthy of noting is the opening riff to the album's closer I believe to the HEAVIEST riff in 1981 hands down.

The album is another rarity in the fact that the bonus track DO NOT BLOW! Yes, it's true! You get the usual group of 'demo versions' of songs but you also get cool singles from the day like Bloodlust.

All in all a sick album, and of course the 'E' word comes to mind. You know what word I'm talking about. Go get it to see the roots of extreme metal. I also agree with Marxist Matt that their next album Black Metal is much better, however.

P.S. Ok so it's not trve kvlt black metal but so what? This OWNS most kvlt junk I've heard.

    Album Description

When a well-known straight edge band like Throwdown doesn't include the word straight edge in their biography for Trustkill Records, you know its time for a new band to step up and take their place. And after listening to xTyrantx's debut full-length, theres no question whether the band would include a contentious label like straight edge in their bio. With lyrics like, "I kill for straight edge" and "strong I stand", with no shame, the band wears their lifestyle on their sleeve, something too many bands abstain from these days in favor of commercial success. This Motor City hardcore band formed in 2003 from the ashes of xTrephinex, Driven by Fire, Provoke, and King of Clubz and quickly became one of the most brutal and polemical bands in the area. Although not touring extensively, they've left their mark locally and promise to bring their heavy breakdowns and confrontational lyrics to any scene they play. A unique six-member line up ensures not only a crushing wall of guitars, but also a diverse vocal arrangement that delivers the bands militant straight edge stance with ferocity. After hearing the bands self-titled demo in 2004, Seventh Dagger Records quickly made plans to release a full-length the following year. The marriage between Seventh Dagger and xTyrantx was consummated by a passion for straight edge and Welcome to Hell was the couples hate-filled offspring. In an increasingly glamorized and commercialized hardcore scene, where bands would rather parade around on stage like David Bowie instead of confronting the morally bankrupt society that we live in, xTyrantx will be a welcome despot to the angry youth that still remain.

If the idea behind director John Beck's nautical frightfest isn't exactly new--long-lost ship is mysteriously found floating at sea--the filmmaker invests it with a smart sense of style and tension that lifts it above its horror-exploitation roots. The brooding orchestral score from composer John Frizzell (13 Ghosts, Beautiful, Alien Resurrection) conjures up the appropriate atmosphere of foreboding and unease, while largely steering clear of the genre's inherent cheese quotient. Indeed, the composer invokes an often surprising sense of emotional strain and weariness, injecting some welcome human dimensions amid the expected shrieking strings and rumbling brass and percussion. While certain genre clichés are paid heed, Frizzell's efforts here often as not eschew orchestral thunder for more subtle, intimate music that lifts the film from mere floating haunted-house gambit into something more emotionally gripping. --Jerry McCulley

Here's another astonishing piece for all Handelians. Many of Handel's great pieces have sadly been neglected - just like many of Richard Strauss' operas which have only recently received attention from people like Botstein, Korsten and Sinopoli (deceased). Thankfully, Gardiner and his team took the trouble to record this astonishing masterpiece. I simply love this piece - Saul!! The Monteverdi choir is the best in the world - listen to their stunning virtuosity here. Thank you, Gardiner!!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent music.......2003-09-14

Saul is one of those lesser known works by Handel. I certainly prefer Solomon, the Messiah or Israel in Egypt. Nevertheless, there is plenty of glorious music in Saul. The Monteverdi sings with their customary virtuosity. Casting of solo parts is superb. A bit on the pricey side but this is an investment that will yield rich dividends over a long period of time. Instead of listening to the Messiah all the time, or Solomon or Jephtha, why not be more daring and explore this lesser known work by Handel?

The first black metal band, Venom's loose, hook-free offerings to Lucifer were amateurish, but thunderously heavy. Welcome to Hell featured indecipherable vocals, overdriven guitars, and frenetic drums that were rarely in sync, but which influenced a league of devil worshippers to follow. --Jon Wiederhorn

3 out of 5 stars Poison alone is worth two stars.......2005-10-24

Poison is one of the best all time metal songs! Not a big Venom fan but poison is just so good you can't argue is one of the gems of all metal/thrash!worth getting just for poison!

5 out of 5 stars Thrash starts here!.......2005-03-18

These guys are responsible for starting the Thrash metal genre, inspiring and giving name to the Black Metal genre, and influencing the creation of Death Metal (although Slayer was more influential to death metal than venom). Many metal bands will name this trio from Newcastle, England as one of their biggest influences. And we are talking some big names here! Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Mayhem...the list goes on for miles and miles! the early 80's Venom released three albums which stand proudly alongside other great albums of that era: 1981's Welcome To Hell. While bands like Black Sabbath always toyed with occult lyrics and subjects, Venom took it to an almost comic level and one look at the cover will tell you why the band was such a big influence on not only sound but image. The riff of opening track "Sons of Satan" rips right through you like a knife ripping through flesh. Motorhead-esque guitar and drum artillery fire attack you relentlessly on this album from first note to last. The music is basically classic heavy metal in the vein of Motorhead, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath, sprinkled with a punk influence and warp speeded to an intensity that was unheard of in 1981. No keyboards, no progressive interludes, no string sections, just pure thrashing heavy metal. Now go out and buy Venom's Welcome To Hell and hear the band which helped spawn three sub-genres of heavy metal!

      3 out of 5 stars SILLY.......2003-07-13

this album is so silly. venom are a comdey band nothing more.

      4 out of 5 stars 4 stars, but..........2003-01-01

Oh Man! This is the benchmark for BAD production! Another reviewer mentions that the band treated this as a demo recording and didn't know it would be released. Did they think the recording sessions for the next two albums were demos too, because the mixes are laughable! Still, this is a fun album, and really the first of it's kind for Black Metal. You just can't listen to some of these tracks (1,000 Days, Red Light Fever, Angel Dust, Bursting Out) and not get a big grin on your face! For that I grant 4 stars, despite the production value. Good times, good times!

5 out of 5 stars From the very depths of hell..........2002-11-24

The best Punk-metal album ever recorded.O.K. the sound is ugly, the musicians are just awful but it's just what Heavy metal needed at that time...a good kick in the balls!
Each song is a masterpiece rolled in mud and thrown at your face.
WELCOME TO HELL is the first black-trash-metal album released and is a reference to bands which would become bigger than VENOM-slayer, Metallica, etc...
It is the production or the lack of production that makes that album so thick (sick) and powerful. There's also a second degree humour in this one-Schizo, In league with satan, Red light fever and I don't think that Venom was really involved in any satanic crap, they were just using it for the image, to shock your mama and have some great fun.It surely worked and still does.
