I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11

This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.

I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.

"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.

The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.

Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24

Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.

The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.

Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.

Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

Decent Quality, But a Little Rushed.......2002-09-20

I have to agree that this is a good collection of music for the money, especially if you are a novice at the Classics like me. Each disc covers a 40 year period with an hour of music and a little bit of history in the cover slip. However, there were some oddities that made me question the quality of this product. First, a few of the songs seemed like the conductor was hurrying them along so the songs on a disc would add up to exactly one hour -- where's the love? I know I'm a novice, but there are just some songs that are so famous that you can pretty easily tell when they are being butchered or compressed. Second, the quality of the product was suspect. Some of the discs looked like they were manufactured in 1990 and some in 1994. The older ones just had the titles on the discs and the newer ones had a screen-printed color change with no information. They couldn't even use the same type of Jewel Case throughout the collection. In total, it's good for beginners and the money, but not much else.

Not bad, but not a perfect as well. The music selection is very questionable for my taste. The performers are not always very suitable for specific masterpieces. It is inherently, just because such mix of names cannot be bad ;). If I will compose such set a lot of forgotten things should take their place.

Bought this CD to calm and relax myself after a hard days work. CD seems like a great collection to me. It's got a lot of songs that I recognize and some that I don't. It does sooth me a bit after the the many stresses of everyday life.

I'm not really a classical music nut like "Frasier Crane" so I'm not sure how much merit I can bring to the table with this review. But I think it's great..!!!

Some of the world's truly finest musicians perform some of the all time greatest and most loved musical masterpieces. The CD makes for easy and peaceful listening of an evening.

in utter awe of the end of the road.......2007-05-25

Well, when i first got the word of this bad ceasing to exist anymore, i was truely angry moreso then in mourning. I thought how is it possible for a truely talented band as them to call it quits. To me they co-existed and jelled together so well. The music generated had so much passion, and meaning. I couldnt believe that this is it. It definitely left a dark black emptiness in music, at least for me anyway. I guess you could say they ended on top of things. But still will be sadly missed by me and hopefully by millions more. I have every album from "north from here" to pesent. Never dropped the ball on any album as far as i'm concerned. Same is true for "the funeral ablbum" Although not my very favorite from them, still very solid. Recommended as a must buy album... holds true to form to the rest of there latter albums. In my opinion, this bad can never be copied or repeated. They are definitely one of a kind. That is why it is so sad to see it end. Anyone reading this, please do yourself a favor, buy this as well as there other albums. It will be well worth the investment. The end of one of the best. R.I.P.

Sentenced has put out a very listenable album to end their career. Most of the songs take on a death theme, but I don't get the sense that they were very sad while making this cd. In fact, it seems like they were just doing what they loved and isn't that how we all want to die?

Amazing album........2006-07-24

This happens to be the first Sentenced album I've ever heard, and I loved it. Being the last they'll ever release, the album has a sad and vengeful quality to it.
My fobbish friend mistakenly told me that the whole band committed suicide after making this album, and that is what I believed while listening to this album for two weeks afterwards. It really does sound like the band members poured all of their being into this album, as if it was their last chance to leave a mark on this world before fading into eternity.

Consider Them Dead.......2006-06-09

I am a lifelong metal fan and I love to stray from the mainstream, but only recently have I been dabbling in the European underground. I've heard some good things about Sentenced and decided to make this final album of theirs my first. I do like how they're bringing the band to an official end with a concept album about a death and a funeral. Sentenced deal in mature no-nonsense classic metal, they're accomplished songwriters and solid players, and they offer a positive listening experience. However, I hear very little distinctiveness or uniqueness in their approach. (This may also be a function of where they are now in their history.) There is some creativity in a few places here, like a choir in "Vengeance is Mine," some piano melody in "Lower the Flags," and a surprise harmonica in "Despair-Ridden Hearts." You can also credit "May Today Become the Day" and "Consider Us Dead" as strong and compelling slabs of solid metal. But I was hoping that since Sentenced are from Finland, they would offer some homegrown and distinctive ideas from their country (something the Norwegians are good at), but they deliver little other than the tried-and-true sounds of classic American metal, especially mid-period Metallica (Black Album era). Singer Ville Laihiala is also stuck in an impression of James Hetfield from that same period, with a slightly exotic accent. Sentenced can be seen as competent and talented at delivering the metal goods, but with few unique traits or new ideas. Longtime fans can judge this album favorably or unfavorably in terms of the large Sentenced back catalog, but those looking for something new or fascinating won't be too excited. [~doomsdayer520~]

Farewell Sentenced. I won't miss you one little bit........2006-05-21

Sentenced is just one of those bands. So many fans praise each and every one of their releases, while I struggle through each album, trying to figure out what it is that makes them so popular. These guys started off as a decent sounding death metal band, but have ended up being more of a gothic rock band. I guess something in between later Paradise Lost and Type O Negative might give you some idea, but I'm not completely happy with that comparison. I thought it would only be fair for me to spend some quality time listening to "The Funeral Album" due to the fact that this is the last studio album Sentenced will ever produce.

Musically, this is a mixed bag. I don't suppose I can criticise Sentenced too much for their actual musical qualities, the main problem is that there is just nothing here that really grabs the listener and makes them listen. It's all by the numbers rock with splashes of heavier sections here and there. Occasionally they add little atmospheric flourishes that could have taken some of these tracks to a new level, but they just don't follow through with them for any period of time. But in the end it's reasonably solid music with some decent moments such as the opener "May Today Become the Day" and the closer "End of the Road". "Where Waters Fall Frozen" is a minute long death metal instrumental that brings back some of the aggression from their early days. This may be a special moment for those fans that have stuck with Sentenced throughout their career, but it really sounds out of place on this album and could have been done without.

What I find really difficult to bare though is some of the appalling vocals by lead singer Ville. I mean, these guys have been doing this since 1988 and they haven't managed to find a decent vocalist in all that time. When things are rocking he's quite OK if nothing brilliant, but when things slow down, which they have been more and more in recent times, he just sounds terrible. This is the main reason that I can't recommend this album. I'm going to give "The Funeral Album" a generous 3 due to some decent tunes and slightly out of respect for the ending of a long career, but I'll finish this review with the following words.

Farewell Sentenced. I won't miss you one little bit.

Great collections, with poor quality sound.......2003-01-09

I expected to listen to great professional classical orchestra ...for this classical music collection, but the quality of the music is not too good.

There are a lot of great music collections, but they will sound better when they record it right.

It is good when you just want to have more classical music, but for a CD, the sound quality is like a [poorley made] CD.

I give 3 stars for this product.

The Greatest Collection Of Romantic Era Music.......2002-09-05

The Top 100 Classical Music series is a must have for novices of classical music, or someone already into the classics but wishes to amassa an "essentials" collection. This particular cd's span the Romantic Era, and although the 19th century saw much more music than what is covered on these recordings, this is nevertheless a brilliant and essential body of works. The Wedding March of Mendelsshon's Midsummer Night's Dream (played in weddings all over the world I'm assuming), Franz Lizst Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (The Looney Tunes Theme Music by the way) and other jewels of the era, such as the Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss, the operetta overtures of Franz Von Suppe, Verdi's preludes to such operas as Nabucco and La Traviata, Wagner's intense, dramatic music for his Ring of the Nibelung operas, regarded as the epitome and the zenith of Romantic Era opera, and the music of other composers such as Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Sibelius, Rimsky Korsakov and many others. I highly recommend this cd to anyone wanting to sample and taste what Romantic Era music was all about. Five stars all the way.

Continuing Riccardo Chailly's topical Shostakovich recordings (he's already visited the composer's jazz-inflected and dance pieces), this collection of music for film offers the series greater heft. The music here is as entangled in politics and pop culture as the jazzy and dancy material, but here the emotions are more complex and the execution more exciting.

The films Shostakovich was scoring somehow sought legitimacy or outright approval from Soviet power regimes, but as in all his music, Shostakovich enacted subtle subversions. The parade-step march cadences of The Counterplan are exaggerated just enough to integrate all kinds of conflicting dark undertows, emphasized coyly by Chailly and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The excerpts from Alone are all over the map, spooky and turbulent and bleak in equal measures, in answer to so many mandated bright, blasting musical ventures elsewhere in the Soviet cultural regime. The works continue until 1967, with a twisty waltz from Sofia Perovskaya, which seems more like a distant comment on the notion of a dance piece than music scripted for dance. For its mix of big, lit sweeps and minute, shadowy motions, this is one of the best single-CD Shostakovich sets--themed or not--in print. --Andrew Bartlett

I have always been very good about seeing my doctors, etc. regularly, and taking good care of myself.

~flashback to 2002, at my opthalmologist's, and have just had dialators placed in my eyes, and have been shuttled into the inner waiting room until I am ready for my examination. Dr. "D" always had classical music playing at a "just right" level for relaxing. This particular day, this lovely, lilting, and sort of hypnotic piece came over the speakers, lulling me nearly to sleep. I could not get it out of my head, and was still "playing it" in my brain after the visit was over and I was at the reception desk, paying his wife for my visit, and scheduling a two week follow-up. I asked her what had been playing, and so she went in and brought out the two album cases that were in the machine. One was Schubert sonatas--I knew it wasn't that. The other album was this one, the Shostakovich film music. So I thanked her, and said I'd have to watch for it. When I went back for my follow-up, she passed me a little foil shopping bag with a ribbon on the top of it with a cheery "Enjoy, Greg"! In the bag was a copy of this album that she had picked up for me! (Such a lovely lady)

When I got home I played it, and the piece is the op.97, Romance from Gadfly...what a lovely piece of music. Just like a lazy summer afternoon, when you would, surely, see these insects floating indolently in the air.

The other pieces are all very interesting, and fun, too, and this is a wonderful foray into unknown or uncharted waters (at least for me). I love this album, and listen fairly frequently to it. There are 3 albums in a series, this "Film" one, a "Jazz" one, and the "Dance" one. I enjoy all of them, but this one I play most frequently.

Riccardo Chailly is a truly great conductor, I feel, and is one of the few that "take me back", or "make me think about" the conductors from earlier that I remember. This album in particular makes me think, fondly, about Stokowski, and Reiner frequently when I play it. Presentation? Or something else? I do not know, but it does, and, it IS a great album. A worthy addition to your collection, be assurred. ~operabruin

This recording is excellent. The works are rather light so one does not notice at first that the recording is that good. After some listebning I notice and i Am sure you will do too. Pirogorov and Sofia Petrovskaja i like best. Great recording.

This is the perfect album for anyone who believes Shostakovich was only capable of writing music that expressed his inner turmoil.
Here is an album of the composer just doing his job (writing soundtracks for propaganda films) and showing he's capable of playing the field like a consummate pro.
Many of the melodies may sound vaguely familiar, and it's no wonder; they were often pilfered by other assembly line arrangers for Hollywood musicals and other upbeat entertainment.
I'd have to agree with the previous reviewer, who thinks track 25 is the best. It's the Romance from "The Gadfly", which is arguably Shostakovich's greatest melody, played here with perfection; the "lazy" pizzicato and slightly staggered fourth beat in the measure is something I haven't heard before on this piece, and it works very nicely for these ears.

A Unique Collection of Works.......2000-11-25

The film scores of Dmitri Shostakovich are certainly not his best works, but they are definetly worth a look. There is a great range of music on this CD, from the joyful 'Tale of the Silly Little Mouse' to the harshness of 'Hamlet', and Chailly and his players give solid performances throughout. I wouldn't really recommend this as an introduction to Shostakovich's works, but if you're a fan, then it would make a great addition to your collection.

Track 25 is the best.......1999-06-17

Shostakivich wrote some 'heavy' music, but in his better moments he wrote some beautiful melodies (e.g. The Jazz Suite) and film themes including The Tale of the silly little mouse'. What a pity that you have to wait until track 25 for the best piece - the Romance from the 'Gadfly' (Theme music from the BBC series 'Reilly, ace of spies'). The definitive recording of this piece was the version by the USSR Cinema Symphony Orchestra, with Khatchaturian conducting, but the version on this recording is also excellent.

Excellent Compilation.......2005-03-05

We were looking for a good source to introduce our children (4 and 6) to various classical composers and melodies. We had tried one of the Baby Einstein tapes, but all the music was done on synthesizers. This compilation is done with real orchestras.
It has been a great tool in getting the kids familiar with all different types of composers - from Baroque and Classical, to Romantics and someone modern composers.
