The Wailin' Jennys--Cara Luft, Nicky Mehta, and Ruth Moody--are three Canadian singer-songwriters with already established careers who first got together for a one-shot gig in 2002 and, to their surprise, discovered that their voices blended in an almost magical harmony. They decided to put their solo endeavors aside for a while to see where this gift would take them, and the appealing folk-pop vibe of 40 Days is the result. They perform an eclectic selection of material, including covers of John Hiatt's "Take It Down" and Neil Young's "Old Man" plus lovely versions of the old English folk songs "The Parting Glass" and "Saucy Sailor." However, it's the original songs that stand out most. As you would expect, each Jenny has a distinctive voice and writing style, but the amazing vocal harmonies help Luft's spiky, rock-inflected songs, Mehta's poetic and mysterious meditations, and Moody's lively Celtic-tinged melodies blend into a seamless whole. --Michael John Simmons
Album Description
"40 Days" represents the exciting US debut of Ruth Moody, Nicky Mehta and Cara Luft...three young Canadian performers whose harmonies and songwriting have been called "spine-tingling," "angelic," and "breathtaking." The group was formed more-or-less as a lark...all three Winnipeg women were established solo artists and admired in Canadian folk circles for their singing and gifted songwriting...and the so-called "supergroup" was meant to last for one night only at a local folk club. As fate would have it, the audience went crazy for them performing in that configuration and a Canadian folk phenomenon was born. With their stirring voices and richly emotional original songs, the Jennys have created one of the most memorable and tantalizing first albums in a long time.

Can't stop listening to this CD!.......2007-07-05
We were first introduced to the Wailin' Jennys on A Prairie Home Companion last year and found their songs and their sound to be so memorable that we purchased tickets to see them in concert locally this past May. We have since purchased both the 40 Days and Firecracker CDs, and just can't recommend them enough. Incredible harmonies in beautifully written, inspiring, timeless songs.
Record of the Year.......2007-03-23
If you've not heard this album, you're missing a masterpiece. The harmony is stunning, the song selection fabulous, the arrangements are subtle, tasteful and appropriately understated, and the overall production a huge success. It's my best find from last year and one of my all time favorites albums ever.
very nice.......2007-01-15
i had heard this cd as a background music for a running set of home pictures. perfect. plan to do the same. also nice to play on my day off cleaning days. crank the music and go. the lyrics are perfect. enjoy
Nice Debut .......2006-11-10
A folk group, which calls Winnipeg, Manitoba home. Nice blend of songs, beautiful arrangements. Of particular note is the cover of Niel Youngs song "Old Man." Worth the price for any folk music fan.
Joyful.......2006-11-05
Having come across the Jenny's quite by accident while listening to the Garrison Keiler Radio Show on BBc Radio 7. Their harmonising was sublime and prompted me to get on line and buy all their CDs immediatelly. To say I have not been disappointed is an understatement. These girls are the best.

By the looks of the cartoony cover art, Disney's Swashbuckling Sea Songs is meant to be a consolation prize for kid brothers and sisters who couldn't convince their parents they'd come away from "Pirates of the Caribbean" (name your installment) without developing nightmares. That's not to say that bigger kids won't whistle yo-ho-ho merrily after a casual listen, too: salty classics like "Blow the Man Down" set the mood for a plastic sword fight in the basement; "Pirates of the Black Tide" and "Stowaway" deliver mutinous tales made mild by friendly-sounding flutes and fiddles; "The Pirate King" sallies forth with regal, dramatic flair; and "Shiver Me Timbers" and "The Legend of Davy Jones" are sufficiently menacing-sounding to keep the whole thing afloat with kids who'd sooner walk the plank than be caught listening to a kiddie CD. The packagers didn't forget that any pirate worth his eye patch expects a little buried treasure with his purchase: Pirate lore--cool tidbits on flags, secret identities, and so forth--fill the liner notes. --Tammy La Gorce

Fun, Catchy tunes........2007-05-31
This collection of songs is fun and appropriate even for young children.
Disappointing.......2007-05-17
Not very many good tunes for kids to sing. The Yo Ho song at the end was why we bought this and it's actualy the exact recording from the ride.
Having been on the ride probably more than 20 times over 30 years I can say this.
Cool!.......2007-05-16
I'm 19 and I love this cd!!! Jeez, Im a loser!! But really, this cd is fun for kids and adults alike.
Yo Ho Ho.......2007-05-13

Bought this on a whim and absolutely love it! Yeah...I know it's a kid's CD but who cares!! Within a week I knew all the songs by heart and I sing along at the top of my lungs while I'm cruisin down the highway. It's the best "feel good" CD I've bought in a long time.

Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski hatched the idea for Rogue's Gallery while filming "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"--that idea being to cast genteel rock superstars like Bono, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Andre Corr, and Sting to reinterpret gritty seafaring standards for an exhaustive 43-track double-disc set produced by Hal Wilner. Throw in a bunch of credible folk stars (Loudon Wainwright III, Richard Thompson), their offspring (Rufus, Teddy) and a string of other curious characters (Jarvis Cocker, Antony) and what results is one of the strangest compilations in recent memory, if not exactly the most historically authentic or, well, digestible. Nick Cave embraces the role just a little too hard on "Fire Down Below," while Ferry can't help but sound like he's singing for the cast of "The Love Boat," but cut through the chaff and there is some real bootie here: Bono's "Dying Sailor to His Shipmates," Jolie Holland's "The Grey Funnel Line" and "Boney" by a mysterious tramp called Jack Sh**, which must be some kind of anagram for Johnny Depp. --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
While working on the two "Pirates Of The Carribean" films, Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski became fascinated with the lore and fable of the pirates and sailors who ran the high seas. Enter legendary producer Hal Wilner, who brings his knack for matching maverick musicians with extraordinary material. Artists on this double disc set include Bono, Sting, Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, Lou Reed, Richard Thompson, Lucinda Williams, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, and many more. "Rogue's Gallery" offers a look at the hardships, the horrors, the lusts and lurid depths, and the crystal beauty that led men to the sea in ships for hundreds of years.
Customer Reviews:
Fun--but not great.......2007-07-03
What a concept--a pirate song co-produced by Verbinski and Depp inspired by the "Pirates of the Carribean" series. It should be great and in places, it is. The big question I came away with is--who is Jack Sh**? That one definitely has me guessing.
I won't belabor the song content or the production value. I think the most notable reviews have got that down pat, although I'm not marking down as far as they have because I'm giving points for originality being a fan of Spike Jones and some other truly demented people.
One thing to note: this is not a CD you'd buy if you were looking for something to amuse your kids. Some of the content is very bawdy and Mom and Dad would have some serious 'splaining to do to the little pirates. There's both some language and some situations that are more twisted than a Hangman's knot.
aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh!.......2007-06-09
Some of the songs are quite good(mellow)others a little odd. Its what I expected, but not what you would expect.
Disappointment would be an understatement.......2007-06-04
It is not unusual to find sea shanties performed by not the greatest musicians or singers in the world. It is not unusual to find shanties sung by people who have difficulty keeping perfect pitch, or tempo. But at least they understand what the music is about, and sing it with heart and enthusiasm and a love for the genre.
Hal Wilner should stick to whatever genre it is that made him know enough to be approached by labels, because he clearly has no understanding, and less enthusiasm for *this* genre.
If you love lively music from the maritime era, you can only be bitterly disappointed by this collection. Out of 43 tracks, I found 15 that were salvageable. Sort of.
I've already tossed this onto the pile to go to the resale shop. It wasn't worthy the cost of shipping.
Zzz..........2007-04-04
I have to admit that I have no idea what kinds of music the pirates sang aboard their ships. I know it probably wasn't "yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me," but I expected something different than this. I think my expectations have been colored by groups like The Pogues, Flogging Molly, The Tossers, and the Real McKenzies. I have an annual Pirate Party and I was hoping to find some good music here to get people in the mood for a treasure hunt or pirate liar's dice, but instead, the music on this CD is something I'd put on if the party went on too long and I wanted to encourage people to leave. Some of it is actually awful and the rest is too slow and plodding to inject much energy into any situation.
I appreciate what was attempted here (contemporary artists paying homage to sea chanteys in the spirit of our romanticized version of the pirate era) but it just doesn't really work. The effect is similar to what would be achieved if the London Philharmonic Orchestra attempted to play rap "music" with Luciano Pavarotti rhymin' while flashing gang signs.
another set of hopes are smashed.......2007-03-29
the selection of titles attracted me. The quality of the arrangements, the voices, and the music---are all quite bad.
It is VERY sad that these same titles, could not have been produced for quality. They sound like a nightmare.

Customer Reviews:
We absolutely adore this!!.......2007-01-16
We're weekend sailors with a small craft at the local marina. These shanties have become not only a favorite of ours (to sing along to as we sail along with the CD at full volume) but has become a favorite of the entire marina!! This is a lot of fun!
charming!.......2006-10-13
well recorded-strong voices. Great sound for this genre. Buy it if you like the shanties!
Excellent CD, and well worth the price........2006-02-17
They picked a good selection of shanties for this CD. The recording is crisp and clear, and sounds decently authentic, if a bit too structured. The lack of instruments such as the concertina is an interesting touch, but the tracks sounds good without it. If you're looking to get into shanties, this is a great place to start. Highly recommended.
Sailing the Seas .......2005-10-26
This CD takes you on board with the sailors of old. One can picture them raising the sails and doing other hard labor chores singing these shanties. Some are upbeat and others have a melancholy feel, especially those sung as the sailors head out to sea. Life was hard on these ships, and the sailors' music and shanties helped make life more bearable. It is all so very authentic and done superbly by Johnny Collins and crew, who do not use accompanying music. If you love the sea, buy this CD.
Well done and most enjoyable!.......2005-01-27
100% Pure sea shanty sung with true feeling in a traditional manner! A bunch of familiar halyard, pump, capstan, hauling shanties (`Blow the Man Down', `South Australia', `The Bulgine Run', `Blood Red Roses', `The Wild Goose' and more) along with a well-performed selection of some other sea songs like `Old Maui', `Dogger Bank', `Sailor's Prayer', etc.
This CD offers good, pleasing harmony and solo male vocals throughout, all well recorded and engineered. If you're expecting any instrumental accompaniment you won't find it here but it doesn't detract a whit from these recordings.
If you like traditional sea shanties, add this to your collection.

Oldie but Goodie.......2007-03-28
This is a wonderful children's CD. My two kids loved it when they were little (it was a record then) and now I keep several on hand to include in gifts for babies and small children. Burl Ives' voice is "easy on the ears" for adults as well.
Great songs.......2006-05-16
I highly recommend this CD. I grew up listening to Burl Ives as a child (his adult stuff), and was looking for some of his music for my son. This CD is perfect - my 2 1/2 year old son's current favorites are the "train song" (little engine that could) and the "goose song". We listen to it over and over in the car.
Burl Ives Sings A Little White Duck.......2006-03-15
When I saw that this was available, I had to have it. Listening to Burl Ives brought back such good memories of my childhood. I listened to it all of the time and even now I still remember the lyrics. The CD provides good, wholesome, entertainment and also wonderful phonemic awareness opportunities for little ones.
Beloved songs.......2006-02-01
...but where is the Crocodile Song that was on the original album? What a classic.
a baby-boomer classic!.......2005-02-28
I suppose i shouldn't have been surprised to read the other reviews and stories of how precious this album--and its memories---were to the other reviewers; back when we "baby-boomers" were little the music/media field was MUCH smaller--only a handful of artists putting out children's music. so like with "hula hoops" or "mickey mouse club", the folks weaned on this album probably numbers in the millions! Who knew!? but now most are too old or too "cool" to remember this "classic rock(a-bye)" album. so it was a pleasant surprise when i too typed in this title on a whim and found such kindred spirits! Anyway, for the newcomers- this is great folk music (with a child's style) delivered by a master the likes of which they just don't make no mo'! thanx, burl!

On Sea Music, former Del Fuegos frontman turned kid's music songster Dan Zanes performs a set of old sea shanties in a rough-hewn but charming manner. He takes songs that have been worn smooth from constant use, artfully scuffs them up, and restores them to their former "ragged but right" glory. His performance of "Shenandoah," for example, features some fine Leadbelly-style 12-string guitar picking and an anguished vocal that almost erases the memory of the polite, formal choral arrangements that usually smother the song. And his "Sloop John B" sails along on jaunty banjos and mandolins rather than the slick harmonies of the Beach Boys' version. These shanties were originally created by sailors as work songs, and consequently they have choruses that are perfect for singing along. Zanes is joined on many tracks by an enthusiastic chorus of kids who are obviously having a wonderful time belting out the sometimes salty lyrics. As with all of Zanes's recordings for children, adults are likely to find themselves listening to this wonderful music even when the kids aren't underfoot. --Michael John Simmons
Customer Reviews:
On any list of great "kids" CDs you will love too........2007-03-28
My personal favorite of DZ's "kids" records.
This one *is* great for sing-alongs with the kids, but is a fine old timey record of sea songs that can be enjoyed by anyone. Loose-limbed versions of "Shenendoah", "Sloop John B" and "Cape Cod Girls" are fine and fun.
"Strike The Bell", "Blow Ye Winds", "Leaving of Liverpool" and others are fun sing-alongs as well as good history lessons. My 3.5 year-old and I enjoy this record equally.
It's particularly nice that Zanes' website has the lyrics AND chords -- really helps extend the listening and playing pleasure. I also appreciate that DZ doesn't dumb down the music for kids at all -- you get a real feel of the folk tradition of handmade music here.
great for kids, great for adults!.......2007-02-27
for a fun cd of classic sea shanties, and a kids' cd that you won't get sick of, this is the one. we've given this to many kids (2 and up) and all parents have been very thankful! we've had it for 2 yrs. and we listen to it all the time.
favorite.......2007-01-10
This cd stays in our car stereo for weeks and weeks. We sing a long and our 3 yr old likes it too.
Disappointing.......2006-06-01
I like anything to do with the sea and I bought this CD on the strength of the glowing reviews. Having lived in a port city in England that hosts an annual Sea Shanty festival, I was fortunate to hear some of the best shanty singers around. I had high expectations for Dan Zales and was sorely let down. The music is basic and unpolished, which should be a good thing. Shanties are supposed to be raw, gutsy. But the quality of the music here is downright amateurish -- merely a sing-a-long with the children in the kitchen. I wanted more for my money.
Great CD for kids and adults.......2006-03-29
I played this CD in the car while taking my great granddaughter (8 mos) to work yesterday. The songs were so irresitable I found myself singing along, even with chanties I'd not heard before. Then, from the back seat, I heard loud cooing and chortling noises in a little voice. Morgan was singing along too. Guess this CD is a hit with everyone.

Album Description
More than just sea chanteys, maritime musical tradition encompasses an ocean of songs from people who have lived and worked on the water. Onboard are Folkways favorite singers-Dave Van Ronk and the Foc'sle Singers, Lead Belly, and Paul Clayton and many more. Classic Maritime takes you from the folk songs of Martha's Vineyard down to the Bahamas and beyond. Compiled and annotated by Jeff Place. Extensive liner notes, a whopping 32 tracks, 68 minutes of music!
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful sample of maritime songs and chanteys.......2007-01-11
You'll want to run off and join a whaler or be thankful you're on dry land after listening to this album. Good mix of humorous and poignant music about life at sea.
water-soaked tunes.......2004-05-31
In a very happy move Smithsonian Folkways has taken to plumbing Folkways' deep catalog for a series of "Classic" anthologies of American roots music. The previous five are variously focused on Southern styles: blues, bluegrass, and mountain music. In the sixth of the series, SF turns to a non-Southern genre which has passed into neglect in recent years: songs of salt- and freshwater sailors. These are not field recordings, but the work largely of revival singers, who include such familiar names as Dave Van Ronk, Paul Clayton, and Lead Belly, along with others not so well known. They are taken from albums released between 1951 and 1997.
This is, as one would expect, a satisfying collection, not just for the performances but for the usual well-informed annotations and documentation. This grizzled folk fan learned a few things I didn't know, such as that "Run, Come See Jerusalem" -- once a folk-scare standard, done nicely here by the X-Seamen's Institute -- was written in 1929 by Blind Blake. No, not that Blind Blake, the bluesman/songster from Florida whose first name was Arthur, but the Bahamian singer Blind Blake, born Blake Higgs. I also learned that "Hilo" in the song "Johnny's Gone to Hilo" (here "Tommy's Gone to Hilo") is not in Hawaii, but in Peru (the port city of Ilo).
A small number of performances don't move me much. Tom Wisner's original, all-too-well-intentioned "Chesapeake Born" strikes me as purely cornball in that distinctively gooey Pete Seeger sort of way. Alan Mills and the Shanty Men perform in what sounds, at least to my ear, in so stilted, theatrical a fashion as to remind the listener why sea shanteys are so often parodied and ridiculed. (Admittedly, they're here for all of :36, in a mercifully brief "Paddy Doyle's Boots.") Done right, shanteys are wonderfully affecting, and most of the singers here do them proud. There are also a few ocean-going ballads, the standards "Greenland Whale Fisheries," "The Sloop John B," "Lord Franklin," and "The Handsome Cabin Boy," whose subjects range from the wryly comic to the heartbreakingly tragic.
If you already love this sort of thing, you'll want this album. And if you're looking for one representative anthology of maritime folk music to fill a hole in your collection, this one will do just fine.

it did have potential.......2007-03-29
This album failed to meet my expectations. The titles are why I bought it.
Unfortunately, the arrangements are horrible; the voices are REALLY bad.
It left a sour taste in my soul.
Salt Water on a CD.......2006-10-03
This is a collection for the true fan of the sea shanty (or chantey). The compilation is done acapella and feels as if you are on board a sailing ship in the 19th century. Eleven are sung by A. L. Lloyd, one of the foremost collectors of these songs andeight are by the late Ewan MacColl, a British folk icon.
If you want to hear and learn sea songs as they were most likely done by sailors pumping and hauling, this is a fine resource/
dig a hole........2006-09-11
This is bad on nearly every level. Most of the songs are are without accompanyment so the fact that they are off key is quite apparent. I am sure there are good recordings of these songs however this is not one of them.

Stan's Best.......2005-07-08
If you have never heard Stan Rogers before, this is the album you need to get!
I may be late discovering his music, but at last I have!!!.......2004-03-13
In an age when really good music exists, but is hidden away in the "shops" of Internet-land, because the high street sell chart music, 95% of which (in my opinion) is pap, and do not have room for this kind of material, I have discovered Stan Rogers and I am proud to have done so!
As someone who like to look out for different music, I was looking for Jimmie Rodgers when I came across Stan. It fired my interest, so I checked out Amazon for his albums and reviews - and to try and hear a clip of some of the tracks. Very promising.... so I take a chance and buy "Fogarty's Cove".
The result is a glorious album of stories about Canadian life and times, sung in a wonderful baritone voice, with an acoustic band which is as tight as a drum. Don't ask me to say which of the 12 tracks I like the best - they are all very special, but if push came to shove, I would plump for "Firty-Five Years", "The Maide Of The Shore", "Finch's Complaint" and "The Maid Of The Shore" - see, I can't pick one!
Remember, this album was released 27 years ago, but it sounds as fresh as a daisy, as if it was made yesterday. I would suggest the topics are as relavant today as then, so I conclude that this is a timeless album.
The tragic end to his life - as a passenger on the ill-fated Air Canada flight 797 which caught fire at Cincinnati Airport - must not take away his music or his memory.
I doubt if he would have had the exposure to be a superstar, but, in my mind, he is. He comes from a land of brilliant artists and bands, but he ranks with the best.
This album is an absolute gem and the more people know it, the better. Go and buy it and luxuriate in Stan's view of Canadianism......you won't regret it.
Great CD!.......2003-02-16
The song "45 Years" is worth the price of the cd alone. As far as ballads go, I don't think it can get much better. What a great song. I agree with the previous reviews already posted. This is worth while having in your collection.
Fogarty's Cove.......2002-11-24
I was devistated when I heard of Stan Roger's death in the Ohio airplane accident almost 20 years ago. Thank goodness his music lives on in these CDs. The Wreck of the Athens Queen is one of my favorite tracks of all. And Fogarty's Cove. AND Barrett's Privateers of course!
Stan Rogers Rules.......2002-06-15
After seeing & hearing Stan Rogers many years ago, and searching for this vinyl with no luck, thank you whoever rereleased this to cd. A major THANK YOU to you. An extremely fine piece of music for anyones collection. I really couldn't say what my favorite track is, because the whole is so important that they all fit exactly. I find if I just hear a song my brain starts to call the next automatically.

Not Bad At All.......2004-06-19
I never really likes Burl's songs in movies like Summer Magic, but I heard this CD at a friend's house, and I found it pretty good. It's actually very good for this type of music. Although Burl's classic folk style is not exactly my cup of tea, some of these songs are quite good. Some of them are almost jokes, but some are really fun and good. Buy it, it's not too bad.
I love Burl Ives, but..........2004-02-29
This is simply not a good selection of Ives' songs. Several of the versions are grossly inferior earlier cuts with poor sound quality. I refer particularly to the incomparably lovely "Lavender Blue" and "Goober Peas." The versions included here were recorded in the late 1940's and later versions by Burl are infinitely superior. The only stellar cuts are "A Little Bitty Tear" and "Maryann Regrets." The rest of the songs were not big hits and are poor filler material.
Burl Ives was an American treasure and his best work has aged well and is still wonderful music. However, you won't find it on this weak compilation.
skimpy, many songs improved over Greatest Hits CD & 5 more.......2001-12-22
This CD of 12 of Burl's biggest hits is very skimpy (as with all of these US domestic Millennium Collections have in common) but it has a few tracks with improved sound over the 1996 Greatest Hits CD plus does have 5 songs that aren't on the 1996 Greatest Hits CD and they are "Mary Ann Regrets," "The Same Old Hurt," "Foggy, Foggy Dew," "Goober Peas," and "Wild Side of Life," and all songs come from clean masters. Some of the tracks that have noticeably improved sound over the 1996 Greatest Hits CD include "Lavender Blue," "Blue Tail Fly," "Big Rock Candy Mountain" but fans should still keep their 1996 CD anyway for many more classics in fact only 7 of these 12 songs are on the 1996 CD anyway. This disc is highly recommended for several of the tracks in improved sound over the 1996 CD entitled "Greatest Hits" and for the 5 songs not on that CD.
