3 out of 5 stars Steve Marriot Marriot.......2007-07-31

I have always been a big Steve Marriot fan. I had this one (or heard it before; I can't remember) a long time ago. It has been some time since this was reissued. I bought it thinking that maybe I could hear some good old post Humble Pie licks. If you like Steve and the work he compiled over the years, you won't be disapointed. Steve actually plays lead on this ablum. The guitar work is a little over bearing at points cause of the way it was recorded, not any deficit on Marriots part. The Blackberrys return for some cuts, and the bands Steve assembled are top notch. The horn work on the American side adds a dimension that I have not heard before. There does seem to be a little stress in Steves' voice at times because of the crap he was going through. I saw him in 1980 in a very small dance hall on 1st Avenue in Seattle. I liked him then and if you feel like I do about this guy then buy it.

    5 out of 5 stars he's a soul-man.........2005-11-10

stevie marriott the genius behind the britpop band the small faces with there catchy singles and mod haircuts then came 1968 were stevie marriott decided to quit the small faces and make a band with ex-herd member/guitarist peter frampton oh yeah forgot to mentioned the small faces shortened there name too the faces got rod stewart on board and had huge success well humble pie made there first two albums with greater success in this country than in the small british isle
peter frampton left humble pie and went and made his breakthough live album "frampton comes alive"
humble went on too make a classic soul/rock materpiece "smokin"
"eat it" and "street rats" with mild success then came 1975 stevie marriott decided too cut a solo album of two halves
5 songs with a british band and 5 with a american band
all are beautiful soulful/rocking/heavy songs..with the late great mickey finn playing guitar on the british side

4 out of 5 stars A fun blast from The Pie's bluesy past.......2006-08-06

With the exception of a lackluster version of "Drift Away" -- to describe it as "plaintive" does it too much justice -- this is a fine import CD from Japan. (I expected a U.K. import.) The late Steve Marriott is in fine form belting out some heartfelt blues and tunes that hold up extremely well.
It's a shame the CD package doesn't capture the lost art of the clever original album cover.
The music more than makes up for that lost nostalgia.
I'd waited for this release and my patience was rewarded.

5 out of 5 stars Little Big Man.......2007-02-22

Some stats: TIN SOLDIER 3-cd box set, 64 tracks digitally remastered
Nicely packaged cardboard slip-box, individual slim-jewel cases, very detailed bio booklet with track by track annotation.

CD#1...(24 tracks) Total time= 70:45 Steve Marriot/The Small Faces. Ah, the essence of the 1960's with The Small Faces. Preceeded by rare 1960 recording he did with the London Theatre's performance of 'Oliver' (at the age of 13). Strangely enough though, no recording of Itchycoo Park(!)

CD#2...(19 tracks) Total time= 79:59 The 'Humble Pie' Years. Into the 1970's with boogie-rock monster Humble Pie. 11 tracks include Peter Frampton. Selects the best and most varied of remaining Pie material.

CD#3...(21 tracks) Total time= 78:51 Steve Marriot with assorted line-ups. Absolute smokin material he recorded in various guises until his untimely death in a house fire in 1991.

Very well done anthology. Respectful, inclusive, decisive. Each cd can stand on it's own as representational of the best vocal rock in the stylings of it's era.

Steve Marriot was a giant of a vocalist throughout his life. The thing most interesting that I got from this box set was how his particular delivery never gets lost in the music, even through the somewhat formulaic 70's Humble Pie (the choices here on cd#2 cover acoustic blues, Stonesey rock, pub-rock country ballads, and blistering arena boogie thunder.
Sadly, just as his life was getting over some mis-steps and mishaps, his life was cut short at the age of 44.

Btw, there is an excellent 3-cd box set (live concert) memorial tribute to the man and his music called 'One More Time For The Old Tosser' recorded at the London Astoria in 2001. He is fondly remembered with renditions of his music (along with Cockney banter) from original Small Faces and Humble Pie bandmates, Peter Weller, Noel Gallagher, Midge Ure, John's Children, The Mods, and other "blokes". (it's got 'Itchycoo Park' too!!!) The event is also on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Tin Soldier: Little Guy slayed Giants.......2006-02-25

Steve Marriott wrote 2 of the 60's greatest songs of all times -Tin Soldier and Afterglow of Your Love. Before that he emerged as an unstoppable r'n b shouter with one of the strongest and distinctive voices of the period ( think Jagger,Steve Winwood etc.)as well as leaving behind several classic albums during the Small Faces epoch. The years beyond with Humble Pie & the Steve Marriott "Solo Years" are sprinkled with so many gems one can only be gobsmacked at Marriott's talent : this guy was a true one-man musical Titan who persistently delivered on his own terms ; pop-fashionability he left behind with the artifice of the 60's.
Every track on these albums is valid / a winner / just plain GOOD. All 3 dics are period-segmented and each works as a seperate whole.
The packaging and presentation whilst informative and concise seems a little underdone and even mean ; given the stature and regard given to Steve Marriott's demonstrable and yes ,extraordinary genius . Music rules however & the lack of generosity is blown backatcha by the force of Marriott's voice : the little Tin Soldier speaks through and rises far beyond the Fire.

OK, get this. These are recordings Dempster made in a giant cistern--an empty, two-million-gallon water tank--at Fort Worden, near Port Townsend in Washington state. The pieces take various instruments--conch, trombone, didgeridoo, Tibetan cymbals--and place them in this strange environment, where the music evolves around single notes that are allowed to rise or fall, fade or arise however. It's a fantastic exercise in pitch studies and abstract sonics, and, strangely, it works. Reminiscent of Terry Riley's recent work with the Rova Saxophone Quintet, this is for only the bravest listener. --Paul Cook

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and Satisfying.......2003-03-31

When I first heard a snippet of this artwork I couldn't believe it wasn't synthesized. The sounds are utterly beautiful and of an unearthly style as one tone melts into another. All sounds are heard riding atop each other in wave after wave of reverbal bliss.

My favorite part is the transition from track 3 to 4 where the gruff and dark sound of Dempster's solo Didjeridu performance, which conjures visions of shadows and dark caverns, segues into the uplifting and souring sounds of trombones that lift one up and out from underground into an azure sky.

Many won't know what to make of this kind of music, but those of us who yearn for something truly spiritual, it satisfies with unwavering contentment.

      5 out of 5 stars a little night music.......2002-10-20

This is a great album to just kick back and float to: calm, somber horns recorded in a 2,000,000 gallon water tank (empty and accoustically bizarre) in the Pacific Northwest. The sounds are very spare, a little Eno/Ambient, a little ominous, excellent to use as white noise but still completely interesting. A chill-out classic.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely and sonorous.......2002-07-11

The key thing with this album: don't think of it as classical. It shares more in common with Brian Eno's ambient works, slow changes in sounds and tonalities over time, or perhaps non-rhythmic electronica with repetition, evolving patterns, background drones. Morning Light, Secret Currents, and Melodic Communion are similar tracks, starting slow, building in complexity, then dropping back; the trombone and other instruments show aspects of Super Jupiter and Moog analog synth sounds. Shell Shock and Conch Calling are more dissonant, with Cloud Landings back to washes of brass. Didjerilayover is the only track that doesn't work so well- it turns out a little muddy, with the didjeridoo inflections lost in reverb.

It took me a while to get into the CD, including it in random walks through a 5-CD set in the changer. But I started noticing that, whenever an Underground Overlays track would come up, I'd pause and just listen, then go back to what I was doing when it ended. A lovely, gratifying, wonderful album.

5 out of 5 stars music from under the earth.......1999-07-01

this was first CD from new albion i bought and has endeared the label to me- this is brave music that puts you into a new place.

trombones, conch shells, didgeridu and what might be voices combine... the cistern is almost an instrument unto itself. you can't tell where notes end and reverb begins. dempster's compositions are complex, layered and filled with longing.

this may not be for everyone; some friends have complained of the sounds inducing nausea, disorientation and general feelings of unwellness. i personally find it uplifting and haunting.
