I Paid $50 For The Original Pressing... Twice!.......2007-05-14
I also purchased the re-release. The good thing about having two original copies, is that when I went to go see them live, I got them to sign all three of their CD covers (Eternal Nightmare, Oppressing The Masses, and Nothing To Gain).
This is a thrashterpiece. This is, hands down, one of the best thrash albums of all time. Crushing riffs, brutal lyrics, and all the aggression you can handle. I break out this CD more than I do any other thrash metal album. I cannot get tired of it. I used to own it on tape, and wore the tape out. That's how good this album is.
It's just too bad that they called it quits... again. These songs are way too sick to let them lie dormant like they are now. I wish someone would start a tribute band, with a vocalist that sounds exactly like Sean Killian, and keep these songs alive. That's how good these songs are.
If you do not own this album, you are not a true thrash metal fan.
Definatly in the top 10 best ever........2007-03-12
Awesome riffs that never stop, great brutal sound and lyrics, and truly missed and underrated band.
Top-notch 80's hardcore thrash.......2006-08-15
Even though most kids know this band from having that dude from Machine Head in it, this is a very good but not earth-shattering Double CD. Lotsa shout choruses and breakdowns, but the energy is there and these guys had what it took to become a presence on the national metal scene. Ugly and hard as hell and worth the money.
iron fist clenching your face.......2006-07-15
There's history here... I bought the Violence demo directly from guitarist Phil Demmel way back in 1986, and after a few listens, I couldn't wait for them to get a record deal (like seemingly every other Bay Area band back then). Besides the four-song demo and a track on "Eastern Front: Live at Ruthie's Inn," I had to make do until the Mechanic Records release of "Eternal Nightmare." It seemed an "eternal" wait, but it was worth it. The album is a jet-fueled barrage of aggression from start-to-stop. Galloping, crunching riffs, frenzied solos, blasting double-bass drums, and Sean Killian's voice. Despite its detractors, his vocals fit the mood and material perfectly. Killian shreds. He wasn't crooning for John Tesh, kids -- this is freakin' Vio-lence, okay?
The title track provides a powerful opening wallop upside the skull. Check out the brief burst of solo bass, the frantic guitar solo, the gang vocals with "I'm falling!" A perfect thrash song. The rest of the album follows suit. The much beloved Bay Area thrash staple of gang vocals abound on "Kill On Command" and "Bodies on Bodies." The lyrics are well-crafted and, appropriately, delve into dark subject matter - hitmen, serial killers, drug addiciton, the destructive delusion of insomnia. The one negative doesn't even concern the album itself, but the band did not include the amazing demo song "Paraplegic."
When I saw them live on the "V.T.V. Tour" they had lost a bass drum when it becamse dislodged from their van. Despite the lack of double-bass pounding, it was a fantastic show.
"Eternal Nightmare" is a masterpiece of '80s metal in general, and the Bay Area thrash scene in particular. It easily stands alongside Testament's "The Legacy," Heathen's "Breaking the Silence," "The Ultra-Violence" by Death Angel, and "Fabulous Disaster" by Exodus as a classic that puts most contemporary pretenders to the thrash metal throne to shame.
kill on command.......2006-04-15
I must admit I was thrilled to get this gem on cd. I belive it has always been difficult to find and most of my enjoyment came by way of tape. This is a fantastic speed metal album with some of the most insane solos ever. To me this is as good as anything. I did favor this over oppressing the masses those being the only two i owned. I understand its tough to find fans of violence but trust me this is one to be proud of having in the cd rack.I highly recommend this album it is very unique and has a very special flow to it. The lead singer has his own style that i think most metal fans will love.

A great CD for those who appreciate movie themes.......2000-10-06
I enjoyed this CD because Leonard Martin does a good job in selecting the scores of movies that are special in itself, outside from the context of the movie. His selection is diverse, in the sense that it includes scores of not only the big blockbusters of the 90s (Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart), but also of the movies that have already been forgotten (Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, and The Rainmaker). There is reasoning behind such a selection, according to Martin: "Some scores wear well over time and provide a rewarding experience long after the movie begins to recede in one's memory."
Martin selects the scores from a variety of film genres (drama, dark comedy, suspense, for example) which translates into a well rounded compilation of musical pieces (classical,spanish-inspired, blues, etc). He also includes liner notes reagrding each selection and composer, which serves as a brief, yet interesting, background regarding each selection.
The only qualm that I have with the CD is the abscence of some of my personal favorites, which are certainly memorable both as films and as scores. Reagarding such statements Martin states that "Lists, of course, are highly arbitrary and designed to provoke argument." Moreover, Martin acknowledges that selections are not the only great scores of the past decade; they are, however, among his favorites. I definitely agree with him on this statement.
Purchase the CD for not only your favorites but for the nice variety that Martin put together. You will be surprised that you will love the scores, even of the movies you may not have seen!

Customer Reviews:
This album is f*cking insane!.......2006-03-25
I am not kidding, this is some seriously killer speed metal. These songs are brutal and crushing, the guitar team of Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel is outstanding. A lot of people hate the singer Sean Killian and I guess I can understand why. He doesn't always sing on key, but personnally, I love his singing style. He seems to shout the words in such a random fashion that it makes the album seem even more untamed and wild. If you think Metallica is heavy, then prepare yourself, Eternal Nightmare is a psychotic and unpolished slice of speed metal.
The album starts with Eternal Nightmare. It has a nice crushing intro, and about a minute into the song, Sean starts his singing. You will definitely know by then that this song was meant to kick some ass! About halfway through, we get a killer guitar solo which is followed by a bass solo. And then the song kicks back into gear. Serial Killer is a raw piece of speed, Sean sings so damn fast! How the heck does he keep his breath? The guitar solos on this one are super fast. Calling in the Coroner is another brutal song. The tone in Sean's voice on this one is just magnificent, he sounds so pissed. I love the gang vocals at the end that go "CORONER CORONER!" A furious guitar solo ends the song. T.D.S. is a nice, fast number with more awesome gang vocals. Get your neck ready for this one, I would be surprised if you could get through this one without snapping your neck.
Bodies on Bodies is pure metal-mania with some of the best lyrics. "KILLING-HE JUST KEEPS KILLING" You know you love that! And the solos on this song! My God, how do they do that? "BODIES ON BODIES ON BODIES" I tell you, the gang vocals make this album ten times better. Phobophobia is a six minute crusher with a BRILLIANT solo about halfway through. I know, I know, I keep ranting about the solos, but dammit check these songs out and you will agree! The album ends with the speedy Kill on Command. Nice blazing leads and some of my favorite lyrics "With my crosshatch on his chest/ You could probably guess the rest/When you see his lifeless body hit the f*cking street" The shouts of "KILL! ON COMMAND!" are very punkish.
Well, I may have talked a lot about the lyrics and guitar solos, but I don't care because this is one killer piece of heavy music. If you like your music intense and fast, then you NEED Eternal Nightmare. It's a shame that not more metalheads know of this band, they really are missing out. Do not cheat yourself any longer! Buy this album and you will thank me later!
Very good trash metal.......2005-04-29
I think, this is one of the fastest trash album i ever heard, it's very good metal material, highly recommended!
Awesome thrash classic from the late 80's. Recommended!.......2003-12-26
Vio-lence was one of the better bands to come out of the bay area during the thrash boom of the mid to late 1980's. This is the debut album for the band, and undoubtedly the best one they released. Contains the killer title track "Eternal Nightmare", "Calling in the Coroner", and "Bodies on Bodies" among others.
Vio-lence has been given some unfair reviews due to the unique singing style of Sean Killian. I happen to love the way he sings on this album, as it not only fits the music perfectly, but gave the band a very distinctive sound which separated them from the other hundreds of thrash bands that existed at the time. I had a harder time getting used to Dave Mustaine of Megadeth than I did with Killian. Besides, if the singing is very important to you, then why are you listening to thrash?
Anyway, I recommend this album to any fan of (early)Metallica, (early)Megadeth, (early)Anthrax (Jeez, what happened to these once great bands?!), Forbidden, Heathen, Defiance, Testament, Exodus, Death Angel, or any other 80's thrash band.
Awesome Bay Area Thrash with incredibly annoying vocals.......2003-05-15
Vio-lence were a part of the second wave of San Francisco Bay area thrash bands that included bands such as Forbidden, Defiance, Heathen, and others. I saw them open for Megadeth and Testament back in '89, and they put on an incredible, energy filled show. Unfortunately, in the studio, the incredibly annoying vocals of Sean Killian almost overshadow the awesome thrash these guys were laying down. Killian's vocals were clean, like he was attempting a poor man's Eric A.K. from Flotsam, but he was out of time and out of tune more often than not. However, the rest of the band were top notch players. Songs like Eternal Nightmare, Kill on Command, Serial Killer, and Calling in the Coroner are on par with Bay Area contemporaries like Exodus and Death Angel. The Eternal Nightmare disc was their debut, and it's the best of the 3 full length discs they put out in their short lived career. Had the band been blessed with a decent vocalist, they could have ruled. As it is, Vio-lence guitarist Rob Flynn went on to bigger and better things and formed the mighty Machine Head following the band's breakup.
This is one hard to find kick[in] album!!.......2003-05-09
I had this CD when I was a teenager and it has took me 16 years to find it again. Vio-lence defines speed metal during the late 80's into the early 90's.If you want to hear where it all started from, get this album and prepare to be ROCKED!!!!!!!!!
