In 1995, some of rock & roll's most notorious--and well-respected--beer drinkers and hell-raisers stepped outside the bounds of their respective bands to form a sort of underground supergroup. That instantly legendary cult band, Down, featuring Pantera's Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown, Corrosion of Conformity's Pepper Keenan, Crowbar's Kirk Windstein and Eye Hate God's Jimmy Bower, shared a common birthplace in New Orleans, a love for Black Sabbath, and if the songs "The Seed" and "Doobinterlude" are any indication, a propensity for a certain leafy substance. On this headbanging, 15-track follow-up to 1995's Nola, Down once again serve up a sludgy, sonic stew of Sabbath-influenced heaviness. Recorded in Louisiana, Down II has the swampy sounds, stoner-rock vibe, and dirt-bag patina of authentic, deeply rooted old-school rock 'n' metal. From the stripped down, gently creepy "Where I'm Going," featuring dobro, farfisa, and Hammond organ to the '70s metallic grind-groove of "Lysergik Funeral Procession" to the Southern-fried midtempo "Stained Glass Cross" to trippier, party-time entries, Down II provides an apt soundtrack for those still celebrating the dazed and confused lifestyle. --Katherine Turman

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-06-08

I expected more as the singer is from one of the heaviest bands ever known. Decentish, but I wasn't very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars southern fried awesomeness.......2007-05-09

I may be in the minority, but I actually like this record slightly better than Down's first album. Both of them are classics, but this one has a more groovy new orleans feel to me. It's also a bit more languid, distorted, and melodic. More dark, and diverse and overall a step up from "NOLA" if you ask me. It seems more genuine and has more soul than most of Pantera's works... I know that might be a controversial thing to say... but recently read an interview where Philip Anselmo mentioned how he was in Down for the music and the music only, not playing a role, and you can tell. Also I love the story of how they made the record in a month or so in Phil's barn in Louisiana. Love the lyrics, a lot of focus on addiction. I just love Philip Amselmo's vocals and this has some great guitar work too. If you like "Deliverance" by COC or "Southern Trendkill" by Pantera you'll love this. Highlights are: "There's Something On My Side," "Beautifully Depressed," "Stained Glass Cross," "Ghosts along the Mississipi" but all the tracks are great, no filler here. I recently saw Phil & co on tour in NYC and they really rocked these tunes live too. A must for any metal collection... cannot wait for the third Down album!

5 out of 5 stars You Gotta Have This!.......2007-04-09

If you like your hard rock southern style, you really need to pickup both of the Down cd's.

These release are fat and very full sounding. Phil is well Phil and his heavy voice and style of delivery only adds to what already is just a great piece of music. Seriously, both the Down releases are simply amazing sounding efforts with boatloads of feel and passion.

These cd's have a very heavy groove to them and are truly righteous listens.

Do yourself a favor and get these A.S.A.P.

4 out of 5 stars Down II.....A return to form....."High" heavy metal greatness!.......2007-02-17

Down II is a great heavy metal album bottomline and a return to form after a 7 year hiatus. On here Rex Brown (from the now defunct Pantera) replaces Todd Strange on bass guitar. Rex is much better bass guitar player and it shows on Down II. Phil and his fellow bandmates create a classic heavy metal album that sounds like a mix of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Down II is a little slower ,but still has a lot of heavy metal punch to it. The title "A Bustle in Your Hedgerow" is taken from the lyrics from "Stairway To Heaven" from Led Zeppelin. This album is refered to simply as Down II though. Like their first album NOLA, they bring their Southern roots. Songs like Stained Glass Cross,Ghosts Along The Mississippi, and the heavy New Orleans Is A Dying Whore. Down glad displays their love of weed on here...the short solo like Doob Interlude and of course The Seed. Down II draws a huge comparison to Flotsam and Jetsam's HIGH(both bands profess their need for weed). Down II and HIGH are parallel to each other on their classic metal roots and sound similar, though Down II has some some slower songs. Other comparisons are the songs The Seed from Down II and Flotsam and Jetsam's title track High . Plus overall Down and Flotam and Jetsam as musicians have always totally reminded me of each other.

Like Nola, Down II has a dark feel to the songs and lyrics. The song The Man That Follows Hell is about a man who cannot escape the dark side of life no matter what he does. Another song description on here the song New Orleans Is A Dying Whore is about the economy of New Orleans as bad and corrupt taken from a quote from a New Orleans newspaper during the 1970's. I personally like this album (Down II) a lot, but gave it 4 stars. The short songs and other talking (which funny/cool) kind of delay the album. Songs on here are great (Learn From This Mistake and Landing On The Mountains Of Meggido) though seem kind of long. Every song on this album is awesome and this is must for metal fans. Its hard to believe Down II ('02) is half a decade old as Down is do for a new one. I have recently heard though Down should be releasing Down III later in 2007. Check out this Down II....a must for metal fans!!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rock from the 2000's....Down II.......2007-01-23

Down reminds me of a another supergroup Temple of the Dog though their sounds varies. I first heard of this group Down in 1995 when their self titled album was released and I drew a immediate comparison to Temple of the Dog...having being into them around 1991-92. This 2002 Down II album is slower Southern style slab of Led Zeppelin meets Black Sabbath groove to a 2000's era tweeked sound. This album to me draws a huge comparison to Corrosion of Conformity's album 1991 masterpiece Blind. Not just because Pepper is from Corrosion of Conformity, but the rawness of Down II brings like Blind did. All songs are incredible on here. The last song sound reminds of a Led Zeppelin tune..Landing on the Mountains of Meggido. At this time in the early 2000's (2002) Phil and Rex were not writing any new material for their main band Pantera. Though still in Pantera in 2002 they released this album at this time and never would return to form of Pantera...and most of you all know the rest of the story. Anyhow, this album will definitely be remember as an awesome metal album worthy of being in anyone collection. Grab this gem and give it a chance and you know why it is great like Corrosion of Conformity's Blind album.
