This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

WOT! Its their BEST.......2007-04-27

I have all of Twisted sisters albums and obviously opinions are like... Stay Hungry has their 2 most recognisable tunes but this is even still more consistently anthemic which is what most people love about this band. My personal belief on why it didn't carry on where Stay Hungry left off is down to a few reason. I don't believe it was a backlash from radio stations in retaliation to Dee's defiance toward the PMRC but more a very poor choice of singles to promote the album. The tracks they chose, "be cruel to your school" and "leader of the pack" are the worst tracks on the album! Elsewhere the title track is as rollicking a metal song as you would here anywhere. You can hear what Dee means when he said he wanted this band to by a hybrid of ACDC and Judas Priest. And there are plenty of great rock & roll chanting anthems like "believe in rock n roll", "I know what you want" etc. For me the stand out tune on this cd is "out on the streets". Everything about it is beautifully constructed and it is a song that Dee should be forever proud for writing. It has an epic build up with a great, melodic chorus. When I first got this release it had Stay hungry on one side and Come out and play on the other. More often than not I would keep fast forwarding Stay Hungry to re-listen to this. Oh yeah. Dieter Dieks (spelling?) who many a rock fan would be familiar with for producing classic Scorpions has given this album an excellent shine and crunch! Regardless of the ordinary singles this album should not have been the failure that it unfortunately was. They're back, but is it too late?

I always seem to be on the fence about this album. I either just enjoy this album or I think it is a really great album. So my rating changes, but I'll make one considering TS' past work. I thought the production quality was great. I think songs like 'Come Out And Play'(great starter song with a fast tempo and awesome guitar work), 'I Believe In Rock 'N' Roll', 'The Fire Still Burns', 'Lookin' Out For #1', and 'Kill Or Be Killed' are the high points. 'Out On the Streets' is also one that should not be overlooked. I like 'Be Chrool To Your Scuel' and I'll play it loud with the rest of them, but it sounds out of place on this album. It didn't help that the video was banned by mTV- by the way, have you seen some of the videos they will air nowadays... And "Be Chrool.." was too graphic for TV????? I know they were going with a "from the streets biker gang" theme for this album, but 'Leader Of The Pack', even though it goes along with the biker gang theme, was a poor choice as a lead single for a highly anticipated album that followed the success of songs like 'I Wanna Rock'. And like "Be Chrool...", it seems out of place when heard with the entire album. 'You Want What We Got' and 'I Believe In You'(a ballad) are okay songs. The bonus song, which was also available on the cassette tape and CD from back in the day, is a descent slow song called 'King Of The Fools'. I do not think any of the songs on here are bad, but I can also understand if people are disappointed with it compared to past albums. I know this is hind sight, but if they would have marketed different songs as singles Twisted Sister's history may have been different.

Come Out and Play- fails to live up to Stay Hungry........2006-01-25

Stay Hungry is the best album from Twisted Sister. Come Out and Play is a good album but not the classic metal album like people would have you to believe. Dee Snider and Twisted Sister were on the way out when this album was released. Perhaps my favorite song from this album is Leader of the Pack which is probably why I bought the album. Twisted Sister is one-album wonder with Stay Hungry and their hits "We're Not Gonna Take It", "I wanna rock" and the "The Price".

Not the classic album that people would have you to believe.

It's a good album- but not their best album.

If you want twisted sister at their best- get Stay Hungry.

Come Out And Play (1985.) Twisted Sister's fourth album.

Twisted Sister released two awesome albums in the early eighties that, while excellent, failed to achieve any mainstream success. Fortunately, the band struck pay dirt when they released their third album, 1984's Stay Hungry. With an onslaught of classic hard rock/metal hits, the album scored points with practically every fan of hard rock. Fans were, needless to say, eagerly awaiting the band's next album. And in 1985, Dee Snider and the guys released their fourth album, Come Out And Play. Did fans of the group get what they were expecting or not? Read on for my review of the album.

As a classic hard rock album, Come Out And Play is a very good album, but as a Twisted Sister album, it's well below the band's usual standards. Essentially, the band has plenty of awesome tracks on the album, but they are mixed in with so many subpar tracks that the album just doesn't hold its own against the earlier albums the band put. The opening track, also the album's title tracks, is one of the band's fastest and most furious rockers, and it's an excellent opener, but sadly, it doesn't speak for the rest of the album. And then comes the cover of the Shangri-La's Leader Of The Pack. This song was a big joke, and its video getting heavy rotation on MTV ultimately killed the band's popularity and caused the band's fans to turn their back on them, who had finally thought the band had, in a sense, sold out. You Know What We Want is a good rocker, but it's definitely a generic one, not too different from what other bands of the day were pulling off. I Believe In Rock And Roll and I Believe In You sound like blantant KISS rip-offs. The Fire Still Burns and Kill Or Be Killed sound like Dokken rip-offs. Be Chrool To Your Schuel, much like Leader Of The Pack, comes off seeming like a big joke and really lacks the potential to please most audiences. Fortunately, most of these songs are still good rockers, and songs like Lookin' Out For Number One and Out In The Streets rock with the best of 'em. Still, even the hardest rockers on here are more commercial-sounding than anything the band did in the past. While a good album, it falls flat by the band's high musical standard set by earlier releases. If you're a Twisted Sister fan who wants all the albums, by all means pick this up; you're likely to enjoy it. If you're new to the band, though, DO NOT START HERE - Stay Hungry remains the best release for new fans to start with.

The Twisted Sister albums were remastered and reissued, and in some cases, the reissues include bonus tracks in addition to the remastered sound! Unfortunately, despite the albums getting the remastering, they are very hard to find (with the exception of Stay Hungry.) Hopefully in time, they will become more readily available.

Come Out And Play is a good album, but certainly a step down from the earlier Twisted Sister releases. Where this album rocks it really rocks, but it's just too similar, in most cases, to the other popular bands of the day. Twisted Sister completists should own this, as it's a good album overall, but newbies to the band should get Stay Hungry first. While a good album, Come Out And Play isn't for you unless you're already a tried and true fan.

If there's a precious tone to Michael Feinstein's interpretations of the American songbook, it probably stems from a fervent dedication to preserving the original context of his material. This is, after all, a musician who spent many of his formative years in personal service to the late Ira Gershwin. This collection further underscores that commitment, with the lush sound of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (augmented by the piano trio of Alan Broadbent, who also provides all but one of the arrangements here) adding considerable dramatic resonance to Feinstein's performances.

While singers from Sinatra and Streisand to Fitzgerald and Bennett have imbued many of these songs with considerable dollops of jazz, blues, and their own strong personas, Feinstein mines melancholy jewels like "Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year," "How Deep Is the Ocean," and "By Myself" for all their introspective emotion. "Somewhere" pays tribute to Bernstein with glorious, unabashed melodrama, while "Laura" (one of the most recorded songs of all time) gets recast in something approaching its original intent via an arrangement written for this recording by composer David Raksin. Feinstein himself penned the album's notes, paying careful tribute to each composer represented and noting that all were Jews, yet their music came to represent a richly American spectrum that included black and white and encompassed jazz, the theater, and even classics in its scope. There's a lesson herein, and one that spans more than mere history and musical archaeology. --Jerry McCulley

The one problem a record collector encounters when he has an album too many of one artist, is the tendency of the artist to sing the same songs in succeeding albums/settings. Feinstein, who I consider as the leading proponent in reviving the American Popular Song standards to its unfettered glory is backed by a philharmonic orchestra in this album with the musical direction of conductor Alan Broadbent. And yes, he sang some songs that were sung in sparse and acoustic settings in his previous albums. As usual, just like any cabaret singer who never really sings the same song twice (listen to the grand old dames of cabaret like Julie Wilson and Mabel Mercer), Feinstein delights in the varied ways he can see a song in different contexts. Having said that, I thought he was a bit overly cautious in exploring his rich bari-tenor (sorry for this oxymoron but that is the word to apply to his voice) in soaring the vocal lines of Kern's The Folks Who Live on the Hill. Other than that, he was at his wittiest and conversational (not to mention just plain beautiful) voice when singing I Won't Send Roses and he can revisit the Bernstein/Sondheim Somewhere without evoking the famous version of uber diva Barbra Streisand. If you like good crooning vocals in a grand and orchestral setting, this is the album to listen or give as a gift -- you/they won't regret it.

A Cabaret Singer Grows Up.......2003-03-14

"Extraordinary how potent cheap music is." -Noel Coward

Like Coward, Mr. Feinstein seems to understand the power of popular, romantic song when flung into the void of an apparently cold universe by an all too human, understated voice...I first heard Michael Feinstein sing and play the piano umpteen years ago in the mad, bad '80s. At that time, I found his choice of material from the great 20th Century American composers refreshing & interesting, his skills as a pianist were good, and his diction to be above average. Yet his voice at that time was a bit weak--there was too much bravura nonsense, too much vibrato and he may have been too young for some of the songs that he sang at the time.

Well, we've both matured, (I hope), and Mr. Feinstein has delivered a remarkably smooth, yet heartfelt performance on this album. I'm particularly impressed by his vocal smoothness and emotional restraint, especially on "Love is Here to Stay", "How Deep Is the Ocean", "Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year" & "I Won't Send Roses". Mr. Feinstein appears to really understand the depth of feeling that these words and music evoke in him and us. The vibrato is there when needed, but the ripeness of a mature singer is beginning to be heard on his recordings and the Israeli Philharmonic simply gives his singing wings. The only song that doesn't seem to fit is "Stormy Weather"--I kept hearing Lena Horne in my mind's ear, rather than a polished cabaret singer. This cd is about average, it could have been better.......2002-08-18

First I would like to say i'm a Michael fan. I own all his catalog. Even though i'm a fan there are some things about this cd that I find in bad taste. Please let me explain!

I know it is hard to always be creative. There are just so many ideas to go around and then you have to start duplicating others. This is known as copying what others have done.

For this cd I felt like some of the arrangements were too long. For example, Laura as it was performed hear is a six minute song. It really should have been done in two minutes. I'm an engineer and I edited this version of Laura to run two minutes and it is just perfect. Sometimes less is really more. Also, I felt that some of the other songs didn't really have top notch arrangements attached to them. If the arrangements would have been better I whould have had no choice but to bring out the 5 star rating for this project.

To talk a little bit about the voice of Michael is my pleasure. His voice seems to be getting better with age. I have always liked Michael's voice and will continue to do so.

I will give this cd a favorable recommendation!

Feinstein has outdone himself with this collection!! He is in fine fettle with songs that only He can do justice! His interpretations and stylings are beyond compare and trust you will not be disappointed with this recording!! Feinstein is simply fabulously fantastic!

If there is one thing you can say about Michael Feinstein it's that he knows how to put over a song. His new cd is absolutely magnificent, these are the only words to describe it.

Excellent CD compilation featuring DIY punk rock and power pop bands.......2005-05-25

A note of trivia, the artwork cover to this CD release features The Nerves, a band who existed from 1974-1977 and recorded the original version of Hanging On The Telephone later covered by Deborah Harry and Blondie. From left to right you can see Jack Lee, Paul Collins (The Beat) and Peter Case (The Plimsouls). This is one of the greatest CD compilations and is packed with more songs than most standard albums would contain. This is one of the few CDs where you can actually find full songs from The Nerves and this will have to suffice until Paul Collins can re-issue The Nerves to CD and vinyl in 2007. This disc features other legendary bands in addition to The Nerves, including Cheap Trick, Fotomaker, Chris Bell (of Big Star), The Scruffs, The Real Kids, Pezband, Chris Stamey, Artful Dodger and The Flashcubes.

Great primer on 70's power pop.......2003-09-19

Rhino records is a godsend to fans looking to learn more about a musical genre. Every genre they tackle is chronicled lovingly and contains a great mix of obscure gems and popular classics. The D.I.Y. series views late 70's punk-styled music in 9 volumes, separated by region and musical style. There are 4 "pop" collections, 2 each for the U.S. and the U.K. The U.S. collections are less stylistically varied but considerably more fun and tuneful, since British pop often goes over my head (see: XTC, for starters, who I am starting to love). This collection covers the "early" years of US power pop, 1975-1978, which means it misses the Raspberries and Big Star but still gets many of the major players. Very highly recommended, snag this while its around!

Best Tracks:
"Shake Some Action" - Stones meets Beatles anthem. One of the Groovies' best and that's saying something, this has a great chorus and some tidy guitar work.
"Wayside" - Big Star acoustics give way to something that's equal parts power pop, hard rock, and pure genius rock and roll.
"Hit The Floor" - More great guitar and a booming mix make this Earth Quake's best original. The most raw and rocking song here, it's a song just waiting to be discovered by bar bands everywhere.
"Can't Wait" - Why are the Piper CD's out of print? Billy Squier's best work was done with this unknown band, and this track is nearly perfect.
"Blow Yourself Up" - Off-kilter drum work and Tommy Hoehn's alternately strong/shaky voice showcase this shoulda-been-a-classic.
"Why Can't It Be" - The Names are one of the totally unknown bands on this compilation and this was a fine single. Wild drumming and very Eric-Carmen vocals, the liner notes slam the production, but it's great for a 70's indie.
"Come Out And Play" - Cheesy? Yes, but this song has such great hooks that it's a worthy power pop song by anyone's standards. Better than today's teen pop by far.

The Second Best Power Pop Collection Ever.......2000-08-01

Bless Rhino's heart for compiling this gem. Flamin' Groovies, Nerves, Artful Dodger...terrific! But the long lost nugget of this CD is Chris Stamey & the dbs' "Summer Sun". Released as an indie single, it was backed with what I deem the most influential indie pop song of the era, "I Thought You Wanted To Know". Reminiscent of Big Star, this little masterpiece is available only on Vol. II of the American Power Pop series, "Shake It Up", which has been sadly deleted from Rhino's catalog. The #1 best power pop collection of all time, "Vol. II" deserves to see the light of day again. I myself would give just about anything to find a copy...can anybody out there help me out?

Hanging on the CD!!.......1999-05-07

Bravo, Rhino!! That is a huge selection of a very funny times for power pop. It is plenty of jewels and gems (please Rhino, we want a Nerves discography re-edition!) like probably one of the best songs ever made: "I am the Cosmos" of the Big Star most unknown half Chris Bell, or the Flamin' Groovies masterpiece "shake some action" from their self named LP...best recomended!!

I waited for this for five years.......2006-06-30

Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
It was worth the wait.

The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.

I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.

There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."

But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.

First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.

Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?

On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?

The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).

There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.

With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?

Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.

In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.

Excellent collection but BIG PUBLISHING MISTAKE! .......2006-01-10

Please beware they made a mistake on this. It's actually the shortened Ray Shell version of STARLIGHT EXPRESS from the original 1984 London cast - NOT the El Debarge single from 1987 like it says on the box. I don't know how they let that goof pass. Sorry to Ray Shell. Having said that, this is an outstanding compilation of Lloyd Webber's greatest hits.

ONE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST COMPILATIONS, DESPITE A FEW FLAWS.......2005-03-21

Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.

Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". The one in question here can be considered one of the best currently on the market. First, it includes a 3-disc selections from all of his shows, minus the latest one, i.e., "The Woman in White", which, considering the triviality of the score, is no great lost. The fourth disc covers some of his most known songs sung by the famous artists. Then, there is the fifth disc with previously unreleased material, most of which are the songs ALW wrote with Tim Rice for various artists during the 70-is. The disks are all neatly packed in a hardcover book that features 67 pages of pictures and text with information about each of ALW's shows. One of the other assets here is the perfect sound quality, since all of the tracks have been digitally remastered.

Here are my basic impressions and comments regarding the material on the discs:

* Disc #1 has the selections from "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats" and "Song & Dance". The Superstar material mostly comes from the Concept Recording. Although the songs sound beautiful as always, their orchestration is a bit dated now. Only Steve Balsamo's "Gethsemane" from the 1996 revival cast has a modern rock sound. "Evita" comes with the material from all of the major recordings: London, Broadway and the movie productions, as well as the Concept album. No objections here; since this is one of ALW's most satisfying works, every song is just perfect, although Patti LuPone, the Broadway and overall the best Evita, is left with only a couple of lines. With the selections from "Cats", however, I have some doubts. A plus to the choice of the "Jellicle ball" impressive orchestral sequence from the 1998 movie version and "Mister Mistoffelees" from the 1981 London cast. One of the best known ALW's songs, "Memory", also comes from that album. It's a pretty version and Elaine Paige's rendition cannot be matched, but why include this when the definite version, featuring an 80-piece orchestra and Elaine Paige with much better interpretation, can be found in the same movie version. Thusly, one has to buy Elaine Paige's latest 2-disc compilation "Centre Stage: The very best of Elaine Paige" to get that one. And "Gus the theatre cat" is more a recital than a song, so there was not much point in including that. Marti Webb brings her vocal charm to the "Song & Dance" sequence, Sarah Brightman sings "Unexpected song" with her famous soprano, but as much as I like her version, Bernadette Peters, who was in this show on Broadway is strangely left out here.

* Disc # 2 starts with "Starlight Express". This was never one of my favorite ALW's shows; the plot is even lighter than in "Cats" and the 1984 original cast recording is terribly dated. Yet, here we have one terrific duet, "I am starlight" from the original together with three songs from the later revivals and it seems that fresh orchestrations were just the thing Starlight needed. My favorite remains a touchy ballad, "Next time you fall in love". "Requiem" is the most solemn of all ALW's compositions, written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. Placido Domingo's tenor rides together with the chorus all the way through the strong "Hosanna", only to be joined by Sarah Brightman in the final moments of this song. She then gives an echoing deliverance of "Pie Jesu". What can be said of ALW's next show, "The Phantom of the Opera"? A phenomenon in its own right, it's easy to see from the six numbers included here why this is one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time. The cast, the music, the story - everything is perfect. Although "Aspects of love" was never a popular hit, it does have some of the most beautiful love melodies ALW has ever written. "Love changes everything" sung by Michael Ball is probably one of the best tunes ever about love. The rest of the selected material here has a dreamy love flavor and the melodies find their way into your brain in the best Lloyd Webber way.

* ALW's first musical, "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was more successful in its revival form than the original from the 70-is. The three songs included here are sung by the show stars, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond. Maria Friedman was not a lucky choice to play the narrator, as the track from the 1998 movie version shows. "By Jeeves" was ALW's only big flop when it came to the stage in the 70-is. The 1995 revival sounds much better though, full of funny numbers in the best manner of the musical comedy. "Travel hopefully" remains one of the show's highlights on this compilation. "Sunset Boulevard" comes next. "Sunset" remains for me one of Webber's best scores; lush and beautiful. I listen to the original cast recording with Patti LuPone all the time. However, here most of the songs are performed by Glenn Close. A big mistake. If you've ever listened the American premiere recording with her, you'll know what I am talking about. She may have a strong stage presence, but her vocal abilities are too limited, and her aggressive approach to the role lacks any subtlety. Therefore, the two big numbers from this show, "With one look" and "As if we never said goodbye" are ruined by the fact she can't sing. The same goes for the American Joe Gillis, who was played by Alan Campbell. Luckily, Patti LuPone and Kevin Anderson, the original Norma and Joe from the London production, make their brief entrance here with the "Perfect year"; enough to show how better they are. The funny thing is, on the jacket and inside of it, Glenn Close and Alan Campbell are credited as performers in this song as well. If this was a mistake on ALW's part, it was a good one. The next ALW's show, "Whistle down the wind" was never a critic's dear and yet the audiences rushed in to see it in London. The score brings back ALW to his rock and roll roots of the seventies and the story is quite interesting. But the selections here are not the happiest, since the cast recording boasts with much better songs. And finally, "The Beautiful Game". Again, we have one of those ALW's shows that is worth in its individual parts rather than as a whole. "Our kind of love" and "Let us love in peace" are two catchy ballads. The latter is a nice amalgam version not available elsewhere. The two other tracks here I could live without.

* Disc # 4 has the songs from all the above shows performed by different artists. The assembled tracks have their pros and cons. For example, we have some previously unreleased stuff, like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's operettic rendition of "The heart is slow to learn", or a stunning and epic "A kiss is a terrible thing to waste" from "Whistle down the wind", performed by The Metal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then again, what was the point in including almost identical tracks as the ones on the previous disks? So we have Michael Ball again singing "Love changes everything" with only a bit different orchestration; Sarah Brightman comes out again with the same Phantom duets, but only with the different male singers. It would be much more appropriate to include tracks from the Toronto Cast of the Phantom, with Colm Wilkinson. Other pop deliverances (Tina Arena's "Whistle down the wind", Barbra Streisand's "As if we never said goodbye", Boyzone's "No matter what" and many more) were wisely chosen. Patti LuPone is again nowhere to be found and Petula Clark's "With one look" sounds too worn-out.

* The last disc is probably the one that will be of most interest to Lloyd Webber aficionados. It consists of entirely previously unreleased material ALW for the most part wrote for various artists during his early years, with Tim Rice. Some of these tunes, not successful as a singles, were later used in his shows. Thus "Down thru' summer" became "Buenos Aires"in Evita, "Try it and see", an unsuccessful attempt for the Eurovision was used for "King Herod's song" in "Superstar" and so on. Some of these songs are nicely made pop songs: "Make believe love", ALW's first recorded composition, for which he provided the lyrics; "Goodbye Seattle", sung by Paul Raven, who later became Gary Glitter; "Come back Richard, your country needs you", from a never made musical, sung here by Tim Rice, or Latin flavored "Magdalena", with Tony Christie singing. My all time favorite here is a song called "It's easy for you", sung by none other than Elvis Presley himself. Lloyd Webber and Rice sent him a demo recording that he accepted and recorded this live version a couple of weeks before he died. It's amazing to hear how his voice remained in the perfect shape. Also, there is a track of Andrew Lloyd Webber singing "Policle dogs and Jellicle cats" while plying the piano. His voice doesn't sound bad at all.

Taken as a whole, this compilation makes a perfect birthday or Christmas present to any fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, or just anybody interested in some of the best tunes from the modern era of the musical theatre; despite the flaws I mentioned above. To the former, it may just be the final addition for the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection.

The man who is the most recognized composer in the history of the musical theatre, the man who has won more Tonys than any other composer, the man who boasts the best-selling show of all time ("The Phantom of the
Opera") and the longest-running show of all time ("Cats"), the man whose homes are filled with three Grammys, five Oliviers, a Golden Globe, and Oscar and too many other honors and hosannas to mention, the man knighted in 1992 certainly doesn't need an introduction. Now Decca Broadway pays tribute to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber with "Now and Forever," a spectacular 5-CD set compiled and produced by Sir Andy himself. It's cheaper than a
ticket to "The Producers" ... and more much exciting. This treasure trove contains highlights from all of Webber's shows, and a bonus disc of tunes sung by Betty Buckley, Barbara
Streisand, Jose Carreras, Boy George, Charlotte Church, Madonna, Tom Jones, Petula Clark, even Elvis! A must for lovers of theatre---and good music.

A Must Have for Sir Andrew fans.......2002-05-21

This five-CD collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's career is fantastic. It leaves virtually no stone unturned. I have no doubt that diehard Webber fans will love this, especially for the 5th disc entitled "From the Vaults." This disc alone is worth the price as it contains tunes never before heard by the typical fan. Who knew Elvis did a Lloyd Webber tune?!? I didn't! Also the tune "Benedictine" which the composer wrote for his most recent marriage is not only pretty, but it has the same medley as "The Lady's Paying" from "Sunset Blvd." which I found highly enjoyable. Another great track is the composer himself singing a cut song from "Cats" entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats" which has the same tune as "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," but to hear Sir Andrew sing is a blast...he sounds a lot like Al "Year of the Cat" Stewart.
The cuts from the musicals are great but are likely owned by ALW fans as they are on the original cast albums. And I'm glad that there were tunes included from the composers most recent efforts which have yet to make it beyond London (Whistle Down the Wind, Beautiful Game).
My only complaint is the inclusion of way too many tracks by Sarah Brightman. She must've received a great divorce settlement that included having tunes on any ALW collection until the end of time!! Her interpretations of some of the tunes were limp and uninspired. I would've much rather heard casts from around the world rather than yet another song by this disdainful soprano! How about Colm Wilkinson's version of "Music of the Night" from the original Canadian cast of "Phantom"? Or Michael Crawford's version of "Unexpected Song"? What? No Betty Buckley from "Sunset Blvd."? And of course there are songs you KNOW are going to be on the collection before you even listen to it as they have been on EVERY ALW collection for the past decade or so.
A great collection but too much Sarah Brightman!

I come from a classical music background and wish to congratulate the producers of this CD. For the first time ever, to my knowledge, here is a CD that's incredibly straightforward and extremely simple - perfect material for babies and young children. By no means a classical music masterpiece but the entire easiness and simplicity is perfect to ease any child into a positive state of mind as it does with my baby and toddler. For the Bambino's, I say this is a cut above Mozart. ( Give 4 stars)

...My wife and I have used the Majors for Minors series for the last three years, we have two small children and can only praise the positive results our children have had from these CD'S.

I can only assume that G Spanos is a music academic and authority on classical music, however from what I know of the research that went into this series the mucis is purely a classical interpretation and the success is actually created by sound frequencies and specfic patterns which the producers have used.

The fact that the product uses digital instruments as opposed to authentic instruments from what I understand has no bearing on how this product works.

I admit as a lover of classical music myself that there is far supeior available, however as a product designed to calm and assist with active and passive situations during a childs daily life - there is nothing better in the market (from what we know of) and we have used many other products designed for this purpose wthout success!

My knowldege of Majors for Minors workings is probably better than most average person, due to the fact that when I was in the UK on business, I read an article in a London newspaper which gave detail on how the produsers of this product went about their research and they admitted that their compilations such as the nursery rhymes and the lullabies would sound rather monotonous to the average adult, however the effect on children under three is excellent.

We challenge G Spanos or any parent with young children to use this product and not experience the incredible benefits to their children as my wife and I have found. In fact we would go as far as saying that the principles of this product should try and do alot more to make Majors for Minors more known to the rest of the world.

I bought this CD for my 5th child, who has special needs when he was 5yrs old. I had struggled with 5yrs of disturbed nights; frequently up for 2hr stretches. I would play it in the sitting room whilst cuddling/rocking my son. I would concentrate my mind on the music, rocking patting, walking in time with the beat, until he slept. Because my son frequently needs attention during the night he sleeps in our room, and for the last year or so whenever he wakes at night I play this music softly, it does not disturb my husband and it gives me a focus on which to concentrate instead of mulling over the day ahead or worrying about matters. It has been our nightly friend and companion. Please send us your comments about Majors for Minors.

DO NOT BUY THIS CD !! This cd purports to be Classical Music Nursery Rhymes. It is nursery rhyme melodies, but completely homogenized pablum. It is not classical, it is synthesizers - the worst kind of muzak versions, with the melodies practically hidden away in the synthesized "new age" (in the worst sense of the word) background/easy listening, mellow accompaniments. It might be ok for putting kids to sleep, but I can think of much better music to do that, that is real music. If you are looking for real versions of nursery rhyme melodies, this is NOT the cd to buy.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
