Customer Reviews:
audley freed has never sounded better!.......2007-04-08
this is by far the best black crowes release, for no other reason than it contains the best playing of audley freed's career! the rest of the band sounds great, too, but audley shines above all of them.
Amazing Crowes.......2007-02-07
Its been a while since I've been compelled to review anything but these discs have blown me away from the moment I put them on. Always have been a big fan and have been gradually disappointed with everything from 3 Snakes on.
BOTH of these CDs rock. The Band disc is simply an amazing album that holds up to their greatest work. Another Roadside is one of the best rock songs I've heard in months. Why this didn't come out instead of the mediocre By The Way is totally beyond my comprehension.
I went in thinking "why do I need another Amorica" because I already love that album. But the different takes on the album are great... a bit softer and smoother. And the unreleased gems buried in the middle are simply great rock songs.
Lets hope the brothers Robinson can recreate some of this magic with their new album in the works!
A must-have for any fan.......2007-01-11
This set of recordings not only sounds great, but it's an excellent look at the earlier versions of songs from Amorica. Fans may recognize some of the previously unreleased songs on disc 1, since a few have been staples of the live show. It's great to hear recorded versions.
All in all, new Crowes is good Crowes...even if the songs are 10 years old...
The Lost Crowes (The Black Crows: The Tall Sessions).......2007-01-06
Plain and Simple. If you're a Black Crowes fan get this recording.
If you're new to the Black Crowes start with the first three albums than try this one. You'll appreciate it a lot more.
Excellent Crowes!.......2006-12-13
I couldn't wait to get my hands on these. Getting two CDs from one of your favorite bands is always special. I drooled in anticipation for weeks when I heard this was coming (and it's not just over the brothers... well, maybe a little bit.) The recordings are great and it's nice hearing some of the songs done in a different way.
What a fantastic collection. Feathers, Wyoming and Me, My Heart's Killing Me. I can never hear Descending, Cursed Diamond, Wiser Time enough. Chris always does a stellar job singing, screaming, enjoying himself as he gives his all to everything. Love those hot, groovin' Crowes's jams. I have to say that I did miss "Esta es la mejor mota" at the end of High Head Blues--I always looked forward to that little line.
Contrary to what the words of Wiser Time say, you guys part the sea every time you play. Thanks for the Crowegasm.

SIMPLY AWESOME BAND.......2005-09-02
I happened to hear of these guys by chance, word of mouth, and I cant be more thankful. RRE music is timeless. I'm a true rock n roller, I dont know how to describe this band..I never cared for blue grass or Grateful Dead, but these guys have an original quality to them thats special. The music is timeless, meaningful lyrics, great musicianship, and most importantly HOOKS & MELODIES. Songs that stick with you. I highly recommend this band to everyone that I'm in contact with. I'm very picky when it comes to music, Im a musician and I dont like alot of whats going on out there in the music world. This band is a breath of fresh air and makes us realize that theres still a few talented people in the world that play some great music. Theres not many. Buy and listen to RRE, they deserve it!
Be Amazed. Be VERY Amazed.......2003-05-25
In a world of cookie cutter music, copycat art, and been-there, done-that overfamiliarity, this band is more than a breath of fresh air-it's a hit of 100% oxygen.
I owned the second Railroad Earth CD, "Bird in a House" for three months before ordering "The Black Bear Sessions." I was waiting to grow tired of the former before sending for reinforcements. Then I realized I might never get tired of it.(I haven't).
I'm writing a review of this two year old album to explain what I believe makes Railroad Earth unique and worthy. I know CDs are expensive, and buying anything unfamiliar is a risk. Many with limited budgets stay with the tried and true. But don't worry about future schock. RRE is not so much a band that's ahead of itself, as one that blends great musical elements of the past into a new, intoxicating brew.
Critics have struggled to describe RRE. The most frequent comments include "jamgrass" or "kinda like the Grateful Dead during their American Beauty period." Try this one: "Railroad Earth is like a seventies psychodelic band with Southern rock attitude that's been put in the 21st Century and given acoustic instruments."
Let's analyze just two of the songs on The Black Bear Sessions, which give you a hint at the breadth and skills of these six musicians. The opening number "Head" sets the quality bar near the top right out of the gate. Before you even have your headset adjusted, a banjo drops in to say howdy. This is quickly followed by a high powered vocally-wailed series of "Ohhhhhs" to get your attention, before the rest of the instruments jump in with a fast paced bluegrass groove.
Rick-a-tick drums, thumping base, banjo, guitar and a fiddle soon join the vocals. But it isn't until the third minute of the song that Railroad Earth puts its stamp on the music.
I mentioned Southern Rock, which too often featured coke-fueled 10-12 minute instrumental breaks--but no worry about self- indulgence here. What follows is a three minute chunk of spot-on instrumntal virtuosity that will have your head bobbing and toes tapping.
While many bluegrass bands use their instrumental breaks for individual bursts of virtuosity while the rest of the band plays rhythm and waits their turn, RRE unleashes a full palate of intertwined, now-dueling, now-harmonic instrumental thrusts and parries. Nobody rests on a Railroad Earth song. The result is what might have happened if Wall of Sound pioneer Phil Spector had gone country.
On "head," it's mostly a fiddle and Mandolin pas de deux, calling and responding, challenging each other to even greater moments, before finally joining forces in a co-ordinated, precision picked assault. Each time you listen, you discover new subtlies and genius throughout the tune--and the album, for that matter.
But RRE is nothing if not unpredictable. The third cut on the album, an extraordinary workout called "Seven Story Mountain" will hit you with a rhythmic curve ball that rekindles thoughts of musical legends ranging from Ravi Shankar to Bo Diddley to the Byrds.
It starts with a smidge of arhythmic psychodelia, but before you have a chance to say, "whazzat?" a clean acoustic guitar picks up the rhythm, joined quickly by a fiddle riff that hooks you and holds you throughout. Soon tom-tom drums reminiscent of Mr. Diddleys' jungle-based rhythms-tho not the Bo Diddley Beat itself--join in. A Dobro provides accents and fills, and voices rise in sweet sweet harmony. Too soon the instruments depart one-by-one, as mysteriously as they arrived-but as the man once said-the melody lingers on. You won't believe it was six minutes long. The song is so powerful musically the lyrics may sneak past you. Don't let that happen.
Lead singer and the songwriter on the majority of RRE's music is Todd Shaeffer, blessed with envigorating ability to blend the familiar with the unexpected. His and other tunes sound precise and improvisational simultaneously, drawing from many influences. Shaeffer may be the SpongeTodd Unsquarepants of modern songwriting. He's absorbed it much music, filtered out the bad and given back extrordinary, hook filled music that wears better than a $$$$ suit. But he can't do it alone, and everyone else is up to the challenge.
I am no spring chicken. I was raised on rock and roll, came to country late, and moved to bluegrass almost fulltime when the charlatans took over Nashville. So I've heard and seen-if not all of it, most of it. And I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of bands that have flat out blown me away like RRE.
"Black Bear" creates a bear of a good time.......2002-12-23
The first exposure I got from this band was at the Telluride Blugrass Festival in 2000 and I thought they were great. About a year later I was pleasantly suprised to see a flyer advertising their appearance at my tiny liberal arts college in Oregon. I experienced this intimate performance which included all of the material from the "Black Bear" recordings. This album is fun and energetic. The artists in Railroad Earth are all very talented and they really enjoy what they do. This is not exactly traditional blugrass for it does have more of a rock quality. However, even if you are a die hard traditional blugrass fan you will still enjoy this. Also those who are fond of country rock, the Grateful Dead, and the Allman Brothers to name a few will find Railroad Earth to be a excellent companion.
Like nothing I've heard before!.......2002-11-06
I have to thank the previous reviewer for the words on this amazing album! I bought "Bird in a House" in the store and was checking around out here. I love the new one but still never heard "The Black Bear Sessions." If I hadn't read the previous review I might not have gotten it immediately.
This album is completely fantastic!! Sorry I'm no writer and don't know what else I can say except that it's a must have for any CD collection. For me it's up there with "American Beauty!" And that's saying a lot for this old Deadhead!
A good kind vibe.......2002-10-03
Having reviewed _Bird In A House_ and mentioned this CD, I hadn't planned to review it separately. I changed my mind because (a) _The Black Bear Sessions_ is just too good not to review, and (b) I saw that nobody else had reviewed it yet.
Some of the songs on this CD (five, I think) were originally recorded as demos. They were so good that the band recorded another five and turned the demo into its debut release.
Even more obviously than its successor, this CD is driven by the songwriting of Todd Sheaffer (formerly of From Good Homes). I can't say enough about his remarkable talents, not only as a songwriter but also as a singer and guitarist. If you want to hear what he sounds like by himself, check out his solo live CD _Dream of Love_, where you'll also hear a solo version of "Head," the opening song on this collection. (You'll also hear a solo version of "Came Up Smilin'" from _Bird In A House_. "Head" was also released on the From Good Homes CD _Open Up The Sky_, on which there's also an earlier version of "Walk On By.")
His songs have reminded lots of listeners, including me, of _Workingman's Dead_/_American Beauty_-era Grateful Dead (especially the numerous Garcia-Hunter collaborations but also, e.g., the Lesh-Hunter masterpiece "Box of Rain"). It's no wonder, really.
First of all, Sheaffer is a lyricist with several Hunter-like qualities. Not least of these are economy of language, a sort of Dreamtime evocativeness, and a strong sense of what most of us would probably call "spirituality" even though few of his songs call any overt attention to religious/spiritual matters.
Then, too, his Railroad Earth music tends to draw so heavily on "old-timey," American-heartland sources that a very casual listener could possibly mistake this stuff for traditional bluegrass -- which it isn't, any more than _Workingman's Dead_ was really as traditional as _it_ sounded upon superficial hearing.
His musicianship is excellent too, especially as a vocalist. His delivery is engaging and earnest, with more than a hint of Uncle Jerry in the occasional cracking of his voice.
As in my other review, I may seem to be slighting the rest of the band. That's not my intent; John Skehan (mandolin), Carey Harmon (drums/percussion), Dave Von Dollen (bass), Tim Carbone (violin), and Andy Goessling (several sorts of guitar, banjo, and other instruments as needed) are all terrific at what they do too. (And comparing RRE to Sheaffer's solo release is also an excellent way to check out what _these_ guys brought to the party -- which is quite a lot.) And they do some of the songwriting as well, not to mention some singing.
It's just that this project so clearly takes its initial inspiration from Sheaffer's tunes. (And even the occasional cover tune -- Tom Waits's "Cold Water" on this CD and Neal Casal's "Dandelion Wine" on _Bird In A House_ -- has Sheaffer's stamp on it.) What we have here is a group of six tremendously talented acoustic musicians applying those talents to music and lyrics largely written by this creative and charismatic fellow. The resulting whole is, as they say, more than the sum of its parts.
But it's not traditional bluegrass. This is barefoot-hippie jamband music that draws on traditionally bluegrassy sources but is not in any way limited to/by them. If, as I do, you like Leftover Salmon, the Yonder Mountain String Band, and the String Cheese Incident (I especially like SCI), you'll be blown away by these guys.
A great group and a great pair of CDs; I can't recommend them highly enough. I don't remember the last time I was this excited about a new band.

Product Description
Anthem is the sound of Black Uhuru conquering the world. Back in the days of black vinyl records, reggae bands had to trim their groove to fit the grooves. So it was with Black Uhurus legendary album, which just had too much dubwise goodness to fit on a single LP.
When the non-LP single Solidarity began to connect at radio, the label had the album remixed and rush-re-released: one version for the UK and one for the US. We gathered all the versions, plundered the vaults for some amazing bonus tracks, and put it all in a beautiful bound book with four discs, rare photos and the complete story behind the first reggae album ever to win a Grammy®.
Disc One contains the original full length mixes of the Anthem album, plus both sides of the Party Next Door/Party In Session 12-inch. Disc Two features the original dub mixes of the album; all seven tracks are previously unreleased. Disc Three, the UK remix version of the album, also contains both sides of the What Is Life / Solidarity / Party Next Door 12-inch. Disc Four is the US remix version of Anthem, plus two previously unreleased mixes of Somebodys Watching You.
I and I dig it. We think you will, too.

Only diehard "Anthem" fans need apply..........2006-06-18
Box set release of Black Uhuru's Grammy-winning "Anthem" album (from 1983-84). This release is only for diehard fans of "Anthem," as it offers up 4 discs of the album, from its earlier version in 1983 to its 1984 US & UK releases. Included also is a CD of previously unreleased dub mixes of the album. The packaging is in book-bound form with 40 pages of pics & info pertaining to the group's breakthrough album to a mass audience. Well worth the money if your interests run deeper into the various different incarnations of this great album! Disc One solidifies this box set with its original full length mixes of the album, most of which were released on "Liberation (The Island Anthology)". "Anthem" was a triumph for Black Uhuru as well as Sly & Robbie, who produced it!! Check it out, y'all!!
Deserved Presentation of a Groundbreaker.......2006-02-09
The day of the 2006 Grammy awards seems an a propos time to address Black Uhuru's 'Anthem,' the album to win the inaugural Best Reggae Album award.
Black Uhuru, the heirs apparent to Bob Marley following his passing in 1981, recorded their sixth (and what would be their last) album for Island Records in Jamaica. A terse, stripped-down mix of the album was issued on the island. In the intervening time between issuing the album in Jamaica and delivering it to Island in the UK, the group was garnering attention with their cover of Little Steven's "Solidarity." In response, Island remixed 'Anthem' for the UK. An enitrely different remix was prepared for the US following the response to "Solidarity" here.
This box set gathers all the mixes - including a clutch of unreleased ones - in one place.
Disc One is the original Jamaican mixes, unedited (each track ran for 5+ minutes, but had to be faded to fit on vinyl. Not so here, thanks to the capacity of a CD).
Disc Two is an unreleased dub mix of the album - the perfect companion to 'The Dub Factor,' and for those of you who can't get enough Sly & Robbie dubs.
Disc Three is the UK remix.
Disc Four is the US remix.
Each disc is appended with single mixes that spun off from this album.
And it's stunningly packaged in canvas covered hardbound book with the band and album names stamped on the cover, alluding to the original Jamaican artwork.
All in all a magnificent piece.

my Favorite boxset.......2007-03-15
first off, to all the people who wrote in and said the dvd is not good WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? THE HOLY GRAIL IN THE FORM OF A DVD? THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST PERFORMANCES I'VE SEEN & HEARD.
granted jonas does not look terribly happy to be there, but he sounded great.
while i, too, got all the studio albums the day they came out i had to get this collection (mainly for the dvd...which does not dissapoint)but also for the unreleased songs...nothing about this set let me down (although i would like to have seen an interview or video on the dvd).
FOR ANY FAN OF KATATONIA-DON'T MISS OUT.
a lot of it is redundant, but the rest is fantastic.
Black Sessions: Bad Concert!!!.......2006-12-01
First of all I started listening to them by the Viva Emptiness(saw them on a festival) so we can say that this box is my type... No! because when I listen old albums I liked them better. If you want to learn something about this band and if you are not a really hard stuff person go and buy this box I can tell you this box can really make you love the band.
About DVD: IT IS AWFUL. I am a concert guy and I get so bored during this concert thing and MURDER(from their old, old, old... album Brave Murder Day) is being MURDERed in the concert.
A massive collection of the modern Katatonia, but not enough rare material to be essential........2006-11-24
"The Black Sessions" is the second of the two Katatonia compilations (the first being "Brave Yester Days" to be released in consecutive years. While the "Brave Yester Days" compilation covered the bands earlier period (from 1992 through 1998), "The Black Sessions" covers the bands output from 1998 through to 2003. So there's no death / doom material here, it's all in the depressive rock vein that they evolved towards through the mid nineties. The other striking difference is that this compilation contains not only two CDs worth of material, but also a bonus live DVD recorded in Krakow, Poland. Basically, the 2 CDs contain tracks from "Discouraged Ones", "Tonight's Decision", "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" and "Viva Emptiness". These are all great releases and so the level of quality amongst the tracks is very high as expected.
But what most fans will be interested in is what rare and unreleased tracks are on here as well as what the quality of the live DVD is. As for rare material, there is only one previously unreleased track which is "Wait Outside". This track was recorded in the "Viva Emptiness" sessions and is a fairly decent one too, although nothing to get too excited about. There are also two tracks that were released as bonus tracks on the slip-case reissue of "Tonight's Decision". These tracks are titled "No Devotion" and "Fractured". These tracks are of less value and I think it was correct to leave them off the original release of that album. Finally, they have included both the "Teargas" and "Tonight's Music" EPs in there entirety, which are difficult to get your hands on these days. The two original tracks on the "Teargas" EP are excellent, with "Sulfur" being a particular highlight. The two original tracks on the "Tonight's Music" EP are not really very good, which is a shame since the title track is one of Katatonia's greatest moments. So, in general, there are only a few bits and pieces on here to get excited about, and for those (like myself) who already own the albums and EPs, there's almost nothing.
Which brings me to the DVD. Now don't get me wrong, Katatonia are a wonderful band. One of my favourites in fact! But they just don't seem to be able to recreate the atmosphere of the studio albums when performing live. Jonas in particular doesn't have any energy on stage and his vocals are a little lacking. The sound in general is decent enough and the tracklisting is also ok. There isn't much here for fans of their early material which is expected since they've left that sound far behind. I don't have too many complaints about the DVD, but can't say I found it tremendously exciting. I doubt I will watch it very often at all.
Overall, I'd recommend "The Black Sessions" only to the completists out there that have to have everything the band releases, or the casual fan that wants a blueprint of Katatonia's output without collecting all of their albums. Then again, if you don't have the "Teargas" EP, try tracking it down or purchase this compilation for that alone. There's still an awesome array of quality tracks on here, but in my opinion, it just doesn't contain enough unreleased and rare material as the "Brave Yester Days" compilation, which is a tad disappointing.
A Fair Warning..........2006-08-22
I love Katatonia as much as any fan. However, this box set is a bit disappointing. Here's why.
I like "Brave Yester Days" (a similar collection of early material) so much because it contains all the songs from now out-of-print EP's and singles and condenses them into a handy listening experience. It has the songs from full-length albums too, but only one or two from each album.
For this collection, there is not nearly enough "unreleased" material that Katatonia has done in these years to include on it. Honestly, there doesn't need to be two CD's of material. They throw half of "Tonight's Decision" on here (7 songs), three-fourths of "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" (7 out of 11 songs), five songs from "Discouraged Ones" and six songs from "Viva Emptiness." Now, I'll agree that there are so many good songs on these albums that it's hard to pick one or two favorites but that's why I (and any fan should) have the original album to listen to.
The Math
On 2 CD's there are 30 Songs.
2 are from "Tonight's Music" EP.
2 are from "Teargas" EP.
1 is previously unreleased from "Viva Emptiness" sessions.
That makes 5 that are unreleased or were only on EP's.
The other 25 are all on the albums mentioned above.
So in reality I'm spending money on one CD that I already have all the songs on originals, and one CD with only 25 minutes of music that I don't have. It is just a bunch of extra fluff so the record company to make more money. They could have at least waited to release this until "The Great Cold Distance" came out 9 months later and included the songs from the singles from that album. That would have been enough to make a double album I think. One may ask, "Then why did you go ahead and spend money on it?" Well, I didn't sit there and study the tracklisting before I bought it. I saw some songs I wasn't familiar with and some that I was. I also am content for buying it simply for the few unreleased songs anyways because Katatonia is one of my very favorite bands, and of course, the DVD is a little extra bonus. Dedicated fans will probably buy this reguardless (and most likely, have already - I waited a long time) so I would assume mostly casual fans or people just getting into the band are reading this and I would not particularly recommend it to either. Both casual and brand new fans are only getting five new songs that they can't get anywhere else and they really should eventually buy the four albums outlined here anyway.
I would also like to point out all the tracks are in completely random order, which I personally don't like... I would like to see how the band's sound has changed throughout the years by having the songs in order (just like on "Brave Yester Days").
As for the actual quality of the previously unreleased / EP only songs, they are pretty much just as good as any Katatonia material; nothing exceptionally outstanding for the band, but nothing to scoff at either. "Sulfur" is probably the best "new" song, and one of the band's longer songs; starting off with a very melodic, atmospheric clean riff and harmonization for a good minute and a half, before being bombarded with heaviness, switching between very mellow versus and quite powerful and melodic choruses, like many of their songs. This is a very good quality track that would have fit right into "Last Fair Deal Gone Down."
On a good note, the packaging is really nice, there's a booklet with all the song lyrics and tons of Travis Smith artwork. Each CD lists, all the songs, their length, and what albums they're from, all contained in a nice quality "box."
Live DVD
The DVD is pretty good; decent cinematography, except for a few montages which have extremely quick cuts that are almost dizzying. Jonas could be a little more interactive, he doesn't look too excited to be there. Maybe he's always like that; it would explain the mood in the band's general sound... who knows. Near the end the band announces their last song is "Evidence," and when they are done the crowd urges them to continue, and they do so and add in "Deadhouse" and "Murder" which must have been somewhat a surprise. These last two songs seem to be the most energetic for both the band and the crowd and "Murder" is a much more appropriate ending to the set.
The sound quality is pretty good; I don't have any complaints about it. The set list is nice, very well-rounded, they've got at least something from each full album out at the time except "Dance of December Souls" which isn't surprising.
Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of Live DVD's in the first place; they don't have too much replay-value. I would rather have a live CD so I could listen to it anywhere instead of having to watch it (or at least, have a computer or DVD player nearby to listen to).
So, to sum up, a decent box set for dedicated fans, not something I would particularly recommend to new or casual fans, too much "fluff" from old albums unnecessarily making a double-disc set, and a pretty good live DVD.
Essential Katatonia.......2006-07-19
This CD/DVD set is essential Katatonia as far as I am concerned. It is a great starting point for new fans as well as offering rare tracks and the DVD live show for longtime fans. The selected CD tracks cover from the Discouraged Ones album to Viva Emptiness with some rare material from various EP's. The song selection is pretty good, fairly evenly spread and chosen from Katatonia's four albums that this set is representing. I really enjoyed it and the live show is a treat seeing how Katatonia does not have an official DVD separate from this box set yet. Recommended.

Napalm Death - 'Complete Radio On Sessions,BBC' (Varese).......2006-06-22
Personally,I liked their 'Bootlegged In Japan' CD better(see my review). But don't get me wrong,if you're a long-time Napalm fan, then you should get a lot from this sixteen track BBC compilation. If anything,it features a great song selection/mix of material from the band's entire back catalog.Just good grindcore for thrashers to thoroughly enjoy. Few of the cuts that I took a liking to were "The Kill / Prison Without Walls", "Moral Crusade / Worlds Apart" and "From Enslavement To Obliteration". A decent pick.
one of the finest releases in any genre ever. .......2004-08-14
i find this to be napalm death's most consistent release, as the tracklist pulls songs from many different napalm albums, giving a sampler of napalm death's different stages - while managing to be superior to the orginals in both performance and production. the sounds here are not just grindcore, but a melding of pop group/lee perry styled dub play, peter brotzmann's free jazz fury, and big black's nihilism.
this album HAS to be in your collection.
Incongruous but essential collection of BBC recordings.......2004-02-15
Already released once as "The Peel Sessions", four more tracks recorded in 1996 for the BBC Friday Rock Show have been tacked on as an added enticement. The primary raison d'etre of this package seems to be to give American fans a chance to pick up this material; the "Peel" disc was in fact an import, and even at it's moderate price was scarce in the US. That being said, there's little incentive for owners of that CD to pick up this new release. The artwork is as atrocious as that on it's foreign counterpart, and the vocals on the songs from '96 are mixed way back in the cheap seats. But fans discovering these versions for the first time will find a wealth of rage and hostility greeting them in the ultra-brief, ultra-violent forays into the band's early material.
For those unfamiliar with the John Peel program, guests on the show are given four hours of studio time to lay down takes of however many songs they can manage in that time period. These restrictions don't allow the bands the luxury of editing or post-producing the output, so basically it's set the knobs on the control board and let `er rip. What comes out is a jaw dropping maelstrom of malcontent, rendered in brief, concentrated bursts (the echo following Napalm's performance of "You Suffer Part 2" actually lasts about four times longer than the song itself). Aside from the last four tracks, everything else is from those first three pre-death metal grindcore albums, resembling a musical train wreck witnessed from an uncomfortably close position. Napalm Death have now moved on to greener pastures while preserving their integrity, but "The Complete Radio One Session" reminds us of the energetic fury which once came ripping from a nation's loudspeakers, and on public radio, no less. Only in Jolly Old England.
the history of Napalm Death.......2001-05-07
if you've never heard Napalm Death and must own one Napalm Death cd then this is it! it covers everything from the chaotic noise blasts of the past (you suffer) to the more death metal sound of present (greed killing). a definitive collection. also pick up Carcass-symphonies of sickness these two discs rarely leave my cd player.
Napalm Death - Their Greatest Album Ever Made!.......2000-11-14
Pure adrenalin throughout the whole listening of this album. The band initially advocated by John Peel in 1987 gets a complete album to itself of all the songs they recorded at BBC studios throughout the years. Despite all the changes in personnel the band have managed to retain their awesome credibiltity by recording some amazing tunes, my favourites including 'Scum' and 'My Own Worse Enemy'. This is a classic album of pure thrash metal that should be in every Napalm fan's collection.

This is the initial volume of a triple-CD release of The Civil War soundtrack, and it's hard to think that the other two could equal this first installment. The Nashville Sessions evokes images of pitched tents and cannons very well. Bookended with narration by the great casting of Charlie Daniels, the compilation is filled by low-key, solemn tracks. "Old Gray Coat," starts out bleak, then kicks into a nice little country-pop song, but the lyrics uncannily convey images of a war few of us really know much about. The best song on the compilation--the lone contribution by an African American--is BeBe Winans's "River Jordan," narrated from the perspective of the black soldiers called upon to fight in the war. It's a touching, powerful gospel number that really breaks loose at the end. Other standouts include the piano ballad "Tell My Father" by Kevin Sharp and "Missing You (My Bill)" by Deana Carter. --Aaron Tassano

One-sided.......2006-08-17
None of these songs are from the actual Civil War period. Only one is from the point of view of a slave. Most are about Rebel forces and families. Linda Eder's song is the only truly beautiful one.
Glory and heartbreak beautifully sung.......2006-05-01
From the wistful melancholy of "Virginia" as a soldier sings about his home to the anguish of an officer ordering his men to their deaths in "Judgement Day" this CD depicts the tragedy, glory, and grief that is war through haunting songs by C&W's best. Highly recommend.
An Amazing CD.......2005-11-11
I haven't seen the show, but I heard the song "The Day the Sun Stood Still" and I had to buy the CD. Even if you don't like Country music, I highly recommend it. The music is absolutely wonderful.
My favorite tracks are "The Day the Sun Stood Still," "Virginia," "Old Gray Coat," "Judgement Day," "Regimental Drummer," and "Last Waltz for Dixie."
The Civil War: The Nashville Sessions (1998 Studio Cast).......2005-07-09
If you've never listened to country music, this is a great way to introduce yourself to the genre. This album is filled with great proformances by a variety of singers. My favorite songs are by Linda Eder, not a country star but a wonderful singer from Broadway. Her two songs on this album are very touching. This is a great listen!
See the Show.......2000-07-06
After seeing the show I had to immediately run out and buy the CD. It's good, but live theatre will always prevail. For a generation who hasn't had to live through a war on home soil, this music gives heart to history books and fleshes out the black and white pages of your tattered high school text on the Civil War. Listen to "For the Glory" and remember the cost of freedom.

I bought it for one cut........2006-09-18
My local public radio station has been playing a cut from this album that was so powerful and compelling that I bought the CD just to get it. Happily enough, this is an excellent CD, with a number of strong performances by three superb artists.
But one cut is in a class by itself: track five, "Between Girl and Gone" by Karen Savoca. I have been collecting and listening to music for over fifty years. In that time I have not heard a more moving, poetic and touching song than "Between Girl and Gone." It is one of the four or five best songs I've heard in a lifetime of avid listening to music.
I'm tempted to go into detail. Savoca wrote this song, and the language is so carefully crafted that it deserves to be called "poetry" (not a word I use lightly). The guitar work by all performers is pleasing. And then there is Savoca's voice, which carries the complex emotions of this song in a way that can almost be painful to hear. I can't compare it to anything else I've heard, although the closest approximation might be some of Bonnie Raitt's most exquisitely heartbreaking songs of loss.
Savoca herself seems fairly obscure. If more people hear this song, that won't be true for long. Buy this CD and enjoy all the rest of the album. But be prepared to be stunned by "Between Girl and Gone."
Excellent live album.......2006-01-17
This is an excellent live album by some very good musicians and singers. It is interesting to hear the songs you already know singed by another. Highly recommanded.

Inspirational.......2001-08-17
I am what you would call a lover of great gospel music. I am more of a tradionalist and tend to shy away from the newer contemporary types of gospel music and gravitate towards what is proven music to my ears and inspiration to my soul. Rev. Cleophus Robinson accomplishes this through tradition, "old landmark" style of gospel music sung directly from the soul. If you are looking for songs your grandparents sung and lessons taught that still apply today, get this recording. You will not regret it.

An American Classic.......2002-06-11
During the '50's and early '60's Mercury recorded some of the lesser known American composers. This particular selection which I originally had on a mono-LP is one of my favorites, and probably the best of Colin McPhee's compositions. Roger Sessions' "The Black Maskers" is also an excellant little heard American Classic. As a bonus the CD includes Virgil Thomson's "Symphony On A Hymn Tune" which was not on the LP.
For anyone interested in American composers, any of the Howard Hanson conducting the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra - American Composer series are excellantly recorded CD's and highly recommended.
American Gamelan Music from 1936!.......2001-05-30
This will not be a review of the CD, since it is unavailable. I do want to pass on, however, my enthusiasm for Tabuh-Tabuhan. WGBH radio played it this morning (May 29, 2001) and I was mesmerized. An American composition from 1936 from Colin McPhee -- but it sounded like Lou Harrison or Alan Hovhannes, 50 or 60 years later. If anyone is tempted to believe that minimalism 'sprung fully armed from the head of Zeus' sometime in the '60s, he should listen to this wonderful totally American work and disabuse himself of the idea immediately.
Bring it back, Mercury. There is an overwhelming resurgance of interest in American classical music of the 20th century and labels are raking it in reissuing these recordings of everyone, including Foss, Bowles, Blitzstein, Schuman, etc. etc.
