John Garcia became a renowned rock vocalist after his glory days with the now legendary band Kyuss. After Kyuss was no more, Slo Burn's short and sweet EP - 'Amusing The Amazing' - was his next project. While it only contains four songs, the EP is a fun listen, holding a distinct desert vibe with its down-tuned, fuzzed-out guitar tone, and of course Garcia's wonderful rasp.

'Prizefighter' kicks things off in style with its simplistic yet utterly fuzzy and heavy guitar riffs, complemented perfectly by a rather aggressive vocal delivery from Garcia. After the short and sharp opener the band express their more artistic style and writing with 'Muezli', my personal favourite of the EP. The song has an undeniable desert and summery feel to it, warm and thick walls of sound wash over, building to a thundering climax in which the band gradually build the tempo to a frantic pace. Kyuss fans will be in heaven with this one especially.

'Pilot The Dune' starts rather straight forwardly with its raspy, spewing vocals from John and stop-start riffing. However, once again the band shows a more advanced style, changing direction to a very chilled ending section. 'July' finishes the EP with a bang, like 'Muezli' it recalls the style and structuring of Kyuss, with its drum intro and gradual guitar build-up play, the band lunge into classic riff-rock and probably John's best performance on the EP.

Overall this is only four tracks long, but for those who sorely miss the Kyuss glory days, and want a slab of classic desert rock, this will give you great pleasure.

First step in the evolution of John Garcia.......2004-01-13

I'm not sure of this but I do believe that this is the first band that ex-Kyuss vocalist John Garcia played in (after Kyuss disbanded.) This has become a good thing for all the former band members particularly for this man here. The music is heavy rocking but serves more as an accompaniment for Garcia's vocals. Garcia's singing is far better on this EP than any of the Kyuss albums except for maybe Sky Valley. This guy's voice is aging well sounds more dramatic and is going beyond the semi-restrained yelling of older days. "Pilot the Dune" by itself should make you a believer as it did with me and "July" is another awesome tune.

This is the only release Slo Burn ever put out. John Garcia from Kyuss is the singer, along with 3 guys I've never heard of. People say this band had great potential and was brilliant and all that but when I first heard the EP I thought "People were just looking for anything that reminded them of Kyuss, they were in shock because Kyuss was gone. That's why they liked this." I thought it was uninspired and really nohing special. But man did it grow on me. As it turns out, these are some really great songs, maybe not works of art but definitely they rock. And the thing that does it is Garcia's vocals a lot more than the music. Really catchy stuff without being mainstream. Maybe these guys had something going for them after all. If you liked Kyuss, check it out. If you like rock, check it out.
