5 out of 5 stars Chemical Wedding.......2007-02-13

Bruce's best solo effort ever! This is a must-have for any fan of the Master of Heavy Metal. Roy "Z" Ramirez' iconic Aztlan-Rock chops bring a new depth to an already formidable rock presence. Alchemy themes correspond gracefully to this organic overture of driving rhythms and piercing Bruce Dickinson vocals. "The Chemical Wedding" is unlike anything else, in it's unique themes and pristine lyrical/musical performances.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce's Best.......2006-12-31

If you don't know where to start with Bruce, start here. This is a milestone in heavy metal. All the songs here rock, except for maybe the bonus tracks on the remastered edition, but even then they are still quite good. As far as what tracks are "good", don't pay attention to what anyone writes here. The tracks have many layers and you will find the songs you like and the songs that aren't as "intriguing" to you. Many of the songs I play over and over are songs others don't think are the best tracks... and you will make your own choices. If you have all of Maiden and you need a fix and you don't have this disc... then BUY IT NOW.

4 out of 5 stars Good songs, but..........2006-11-10

Most Bruce Dickinson fans rate this as his best solo album. However, I personally place it third behind Tyranny of Souls and Accident at Birth. I like this album, don't get me wrong, but the de-tuned guitars and the bass guitar strings on the 6-string guitars just don't do it for me. I really can't stand that droning sound. I know they were trying for something "modern" sounding, but that effect ruins it for me. Fortunately, it's not on every song. ;-) And the songwriting and Bruce's singing is great as usual. Anyway, if your a Bruce or Maiden fan, get this, you won't be disappointed. It's still way better than anything Maiden put out in between Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and Brave New World. And keep in mind what I said, that most Bruce fans do think that this is his best.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce Dickinson's Best.......2006-04-12

I really like this album because its very heavy and yet melodic. This album doesn't contain any of the Blues influenced songs that Bruce Dickinson has included in albums like Balls to Picasso. The Chemical Wedding is an album that every Heavy/Power Metal fan would enjoy greatly. This album is filled with extremely fantastic guitar riffs and solos by Adrian Smith and Roy Z. The lyrics are intense and interstingly written. The rhymes are exquisite and its the closest any band, including Iron Maiden, can get to the Classics of Old - Somewhere in Time and Powerslave. Like these two albums, enjoying "The Chemical Wedding" requires understanding the lyrics and the various elegant stories behind it, of Alchemy, Poetry and Prophecy.

5 out of 5 stars Once again, Bruce Delivers!.......2006-02-16

Wow! If there was ever an award for the best under-the-radar Metal album, Bruce's The Chemical Wedding would be a serious contender for such a prize.

The Chemical Wedding is a straight-forward Metal album, but it does have a little bit of a Nu-metal element because of the obvious down tuning of the guitars, especially in the rhythm section. Nontheless, its still a great album.

King in Crimson kicks off the album with it's heavy riffs and Bruce's siren vocals, then Roy Z and Adrian Smith come in and give us a very Maiden-esque pair of solos. The pace is then slowed down for the title track. The Chemical Wedding is a nice mid-tempo tune with a very catchy chorus and some good guitar licks. Then comes The Tower, which opens with a neat rhythm part with only the bass and drums, but then the twin guitars kick in leading up to the very catchy chorus. The Tower is one of my favorite tracks from the album. Then the album hits a bump with Killing Floor, which isn't necesarily a bad track, but it just doesn't do much for me largely in part because of it's chorus. However, the Book of Thel comes next and more than compensates for the Killing Floor. The song starts out with a nice keyboard section with a nice little guitar lead, but then a vicious riff kicks in and off we go. Book of Thel is easily the best track in the album. Then comes Gates of Urizen, which isn't a standout track, but it's still an enjoyable ballad-ish tune with some very good vocals from Bruce and some nice guitar solos. Then comes Jerusalem, which opens up with a nice acoustic introduction, but then builds up to a nice rocker with quite possibly the best guitar solos in the album. Jerusalem also showcases Bruce's great vocal range, as he starts out the song on a rather low note, but then shifts up a gear the second time around the chorus. So after two ballad-ish songs, a fast and heavy tune is thrown in: Trumpets of Jericho, which is a very rhythm-heavy song with a memorable chorus. Then comes Machine Men, which has a riff-driven intro that sounds very Maiden-esque (and actually reminds me a bit of the riff in Flash of the Blade from Maiden's Powerslave). Anyhow, Machine Men is a good track that is followed by The Alchemist, which is one of the highlights of the album. The Alchemist has a bit of a spooky intro and the song is transformed into a mid-rocker with one of the best choruses in the album. The Alchemist's ending is also instilled with the chorus from The Chemical Wedding, which ties the album together very neatly. Then come the bonus tracks which have some good material. I especially like Return of the King, which has a nice uplifting mood and a nice happy-chorus that reminds me a little of the chorus on Rainmaker from Maiden's Dance of Death.

To sum it up; The Chemical Wedding is a great album that I highly recommend for any fan of metal, or just good music in general. If you're a Maiden fan, you definetaly need this in your collection. If you haven't done so yet, purchase this album!

Keeping with his career-long pattern of working history and mythology into his lyrics (and adding science to the mix), former Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson collaborates with axeman Roy Z on The Chemical Wedding. Their union bears some tasty fruit. Former Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith also continues to work with Dickinson on this, the singer's sixth solo album, co-writing two numbers. Chock full of epic arrangements and snarling riffs, this collection towers over recent Maiden catastrophes, serving up traditional metal that's majestic and melodic--proving, along with so many mid-to-late-'90s releases by Judus Priest, Helloween, and others, that good music transcends trends. Dickinson and his bandmates understand the need to diversify their sonic portfolio, as evidenced by the psychedelic coloring of the title track, the electric tranquillity of "Gates of Urizen," and the folksy passages on "Jerusalem." And, as a bonus, rock madman Arthur Brown recites William Blake's poetry on two tracks. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars 2nd '5-Star' album in a row from Bruce Dickinson & Co........2006-07-11

THE BAND: Bruce Dickinson (vocals), Adrian Smith (guitars), Roy Z (guitars, mellatron, piano), Eddie Casillas (bass), David Ingraham (drums & percussion).

THE DISC: (1998) 10 tracks clocking in at just over 57 minutes. The digitally remastered version (2005) contains 3 unreleased bonus tracks. Included with the disc is a 14-page booklet containing 2 band pictures, song titles/credits & lyrics, and thank you's. Recorded at Silver Cloud and Sound City Recording studios in Los Angeles, CA. All songs written by Dickinson and Roy Z (except "Killing Floor" and "Machine Men" by Dickinson and Smith). Cover art - The Ghost Of A Flea" by William Blake (1819). Label - CMC International Records.

COMMENTS: "The Chemical Wedding" picks up where the prior year's "Accident Of Birth" left off. Dare I say Adrian Smith and Roy Z rival the dueling axes of Bruce's other famed band... Iron Maiden. Highlights include the opener "King In Crimson" - about the arrival of the devil himself... starts out slow and then the rest of the band joins in and picks up the pace; the title track is a heavy and slow methodical chugger dealing with death; the softer "Jerusalem"; my 2nd favorite song on the disc featuring some very heavy rhythm guitars "Trumpets Of Jericho"; and the Maiden influenced 8+ minute "Book Of Thel"... the hardest, catchiest, grooving melody on the disc (much like "Freak" did on "Accident" - it grabs you and simply won't let go). Not to mention the downslide of Bruce's old band Iron Maiden with substitute singer Blaze during this time - Maiden would rise to fame again in 2000 when Dickinson and Smith would re-join (see Maiden's comeback album of the year in "Brave New World"). I can listen to "Chemical Wedding" the whole album through and not hit the skip button... absolutely no filler. I put "Chemical Wedding" right up there on the same lofty perch as "Accident Of Birth" as a close 2nd best album from Dickinson (5-stars).

5 out of 5 stars You are Not Going to Believe this But..........2005-09-02

I bought Chemical Wedding a couple of years back and I don't remember why, but I listened to it once and threw it in my closet where it sat until tonight. I was surfing this site and I saw all the beyond great reviews on this album, so I searched high and low and after about 10 minutes or so I found this disc in my junk box. After spinning the disc again, I realize now what a HUGE mistake I had made on that fateful day years ago. This album totally rocks! How often can you play an entire CD without wanting to skip a song or two? There is no filler here at all. My favorite tracks are The Book of Thel (Best Track), Jerusalem, Chemical Wedding, and Trumpets of Jericho. The two weakest, but still good tracks are Killing Floor and Gates of Urizon. Chemical Wedding blows away the last two Iron Maiden albums even with Bruce Dickinson back due to the smart lyrics and excellent musicianship. I am going out to buy the newer solo album by Bruce tomorrow even though it will most likely not top this one. I have heard good things about it, so if it is half as good as Chemical Wedding, I will be in for another treat that will never find its way to my closet.

5 out of 5 stars ridiculous... ly good.......2005-08-15

this album is just plain phenominal. im guessing you're into iron maiden if your checking out bruces solo work. at first listen this may seem a little heavier than maiden material but it is just as complex lyrically and musically.

KING IN CRIMSON- amazing opener and one of my favorites. very heavy and has a great guitar section towards the end. 10/10
CHEMICAL WEDDING- a very solid song with a fantastic chorus. this song is very good but overrated in my opinion. other songs on this album are better. 9/10
THE TOWER- a decent song. good chorus decent riffs and a good all-around song. 7/10
KILLING FLOOR- eh song. could have been without this one but not bad. 5/10
BOOK OF THEL- this is where the album takes a turn... for the better. a very haunting 8 minute epic which starts and ends with a soft piano and the 6 or so minutes in the middle rock hard. 10/10
GATES OF URIZEN- very underrated song and in my top 4 here. switches from soft to moderate tempos with some very emotional guitar playing that suits the mood perfectly. 10/10
JERUSALEM- for the first 3:30 the song is increasingly building up from soft bells and vocals to bruce screaming. the last line before the guitars take over is very powerful and memorable. the rest of the song includes some great guitarwork and bruce ending the song with more powerful vocals. 10/10
TRUMPETS OF JERICHO- the album speeds up again with this rocker. good verse and chorus make the track. 9/10
MACHINE MEN- see 'the tower'. 7/10
THE ALCHEMIST- if i had to choose a favorite id have to put this track into serious consideration. a true gem that is very slow, dark , and powerful. the ending is probably the best end to an album ive heard. its a much softer version of the chorus to 'chemical wedding' with pianos rather than guitars. great track. 10/10

only one weak track, 2 solid tracks, and 7 AMAZING ones. buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars Dark, stylish metal.......2005-07-20

After two abhorrent albums in 1990 and 1992 Bruce Dickinson finally left the sinking ship that was Iron Maiden and began his solo career which, despite his conviction and creativity, never hit a commercial bullseye until Accident of Birth. Despite a few dodgy tracks, Accident of Birth proved to be an energetic and enjoyable rock album, thanks in a large part to Roy Z's compositions.

With Chemical Wedding, Roy slowed it down and adopted a more Sabbath-like approach. His riffs on Chemical Wedding are crunchy and heavy as hell and reflect Bruce's cryptic lyrics perfectly. While Accident of Birth had some silliness with songs like The Magician and Road to Hell, Chemical Wedding is smart and sophisticated from start to finish, combining themes of alchemy, history, and dark magic. The production almost has a grungy feel that gels the album and songs together, giving it an almost primordial sound.

While I never liked the way Bruce sings ballads, he does a good job with the ones on here, though Jerusalem and Gates of Urizen are easily the least driving tunes. Adrian Smith contributes solos here and there, and while not groundbreaking he gets the job done well. The solos aren't as fluid as those he did with Maiden once he re-joined, but they are enjoyable nonetheless and show us a different side of his playing.

Overall Chemical Wedding is one of the luminaries of modern metal, one that will certainly stand the test of time. Roy Z's thunderous music and Bruce Dickinson's excellent lyrical abilities make for a great listening experience. Now, if only Maiden would hire Roy to produce their last album...

5 out of 5 stars Chemical Wedding.......2005-07-04

Bruce Dickinson's Chemical Wedding is simply amazing.

Unlike most of his cheesy solo work it contains music and lyrics that are timeless. I highly suggest that anyone longing for a freshly updated version of Iron Maiden's style of music to purchase Dickinson's Chemical Wedding and Accident of Birth.
I am happy that I did.

Now my only wish is that Iron Maiden and Dickinson could continue in the style of Chemical Wedding and Brave New World.

Don't mindlessly UP THE IRONS - UP GOOD MUSIC.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The bonus track is one of Dickinson's best........2005-01-24

Yes, believe it or not, the Japanese bonus track "Return of the King" for the album The Chemical Wedding is one of Dickinsons best songs of his solo career. Usually bonus tracks aren't that great. A lot of times they can be decent but really not worth the extra money to purchase. This track, however, is downright amazing. Why the hell they cut it from the album is beyond me. It is a fitting end to this masterpiece and should've been left on. The $45 pricetage is hard to justify, but this song is great. If you happen to run across some extra dough, don't hesitate to get this "complete" import version.

P.S: The bonus track has nothing to do with Lord of the Rings

5 out of 5 stars The finished masterpiece the American release was not!.......2001-02-12

I know what you're thinking: Is single bonus track worth the extra money this import costs? The answer is, "YES!" The song "Return of the King" is one of the best Bruce has ever done, and very much worth the extra money. Sell your "unfinished" version and use the extra cash to get this one - you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars One more song..........2000-09-22

This album is as good as Chemical Wedding without the extra track but THAT track is one of the must valuable track I've heard of Bruce... This is a collector item !!!!

Well first off I have to say that this is Dickinsons best solo album so far. However good it may be fans expecting a Maiden feel to the album will probably be slightly disappointed. Not that it isn as good as Maiden albums, its just that Dickinson shows his creativity in more depth than I have heard on the past 4 Maiden albums. Over all a worthy buy for fans of Bruce Dickinson, almost surely a must have if you are any kind of Bruce Dickinson fan at all
