Product Description
A list of the most significant US American metal musicians is bound to include Jon Oliva. Together with his band, Savatage, he has composed and produced countless anthems for eternity. His charismatic voice, concise piano, aura, friendly personality and imposing appearance - his fans love and admire Oliva for a whole number of unusual characteristics. He is now ready to present Tage Mahal, the debut release by his new band, Pain, which will - in case we had you worried for a minute - exist alongside Savatage: "I wanted a band with musicians who live in the immediate vicinity," Oliva explains. "With Savatage, it sometimes requires an amazing organizational effort to realize a new project. Things are much easier with my new band, Pain. It consists of musicians that I've known for ages and that I can get together with at any time to play live, try out new ideas or record songs." Pain consists of guitarist Matt Laporte, keyboardist John Zahner (whom Oliva knows from! the preproduction of the Savatage recording, Sirens) drummer Chris Kinder and bassist Kevin Rothney. All four musicians also played on Watching In Silence, the debut by ex-Sav vocalist Zachary Stevens' band, Circle II Circle. Oliva also invited his long-standing Savatage ally, Steve ‘Dr. Killdrums' Wacholz to play the drums on two tracks in the studio (‘No Escape' and ‘Nowhere To Run') and added a glowing wind section to the rocking sound in strategic places. "There are fixed rules that we have to stick to when it comes to Savatage's sound. Pain gives me complete artistic freedom, I can do anything I feel like doing and, as in the case of the wind section, experiment with unusual orchestrations."

5 out of 5 stars Operatic Metal.......2007-03-06

A truly creative album that ranks with the best of metal and rock, at least that's what I believe after only listening to it 6 times in a row. I can't get the tunes out of my head and I can't get the album out of my CD player. I'm not sure what kind of metal this is (I can't keep up with all the different genres), so I've christened it "operatic metal." In fact, the album reminds me of a rock opera, only much, much better. My favorites on the album include the first 6 cuts ... and, well, cuts 8, 9, 11 and 13. Oh ... , I guess the whole 13 cuts are my favorites. Anyway, if you like great music buy this CD. But it should have a warning label that says it's addictive.

5 out of 5 stars Simply incredible.......2006-10-20

Tage Mahal and Maniacal Renderings are two cd's that have not left my player in months, a must have!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2006-09-10

I gave it a 4 and maybe more like 3.5. Contrary to many gushing reviews it is NOT 'old school' Savatage. It's more like the Savatage from 'Gutter Ballet' to 'Dead Winter Dead'. In other words a lot of keys, horns and choruses. Not that that is bad; newer 'Tage has its place. This release is more like 'Edge Of Thorns' whereas Jon's other band "Dr. Butcher" is more akin to 'Sirens'. That being said the MP3s on Jon's myspace site of his new material (9/06) sound more like Butcher and Sirens than this.
Back to this album....it's still good, solid metal/hard rock. Well done by a very competent songwriter and vocalist. This is not crappy numetal or mallmetal. Additionally, track 2, "People Say - Gimme Some Hell" is a total nod to Jon's past with the band. He makes reference to just about every previous Savatge tune in it. A must for any 'Tage fan. While not a 5 star release I think that just about every Savatge fan will like in addition to Power Metal fans. Do yourself a favor and get this. A guy like Jon Oliva needs to be supported.

5 out of 5 stars Jon Oliva does it again!.......2006-04-18

This album ROCKS!!! Jon is such a brilliant musician. Pick this one up and TURN IT UP LOUD!!

5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2006-01-29

This is a great CD. I was never a huge Savatage fan, but I did like them. This, in my opinion, is better than anything they did.

5 out of 5 stars What is this? It's a breath of fresh air!.......2006-10-20

Inredible effort on Jon's part. His voice gives me goosebumps and chills up and down my spine. Whether it is Sava or not, the voice rocks!

1 out of 5 stars WHAT IS THIS?.......2005-09-14

I've been a fan of Savatage for many years and this is something that doesn't remind me of them at all. I don't mind change, change is good but this is just something awful. Now I understand why Zakk Stevens got rid of these people, (All memebers beside Jon were in Circle to Circle, check them out!) they probly wanted this to be the next CTC CD and that would have been a huge mistake sophmore release. Jon doesn't sing on this cd, he just screams. If I wanted to hear someone scream at me I'd stand in the middle of the street in NY somewhere. Every members solo stuff in now or out of Sav I have enjoyed from TSO, CTC, CC, and the new jazz sounding band formed with Middleton, Al, Al's wife but this is just awful stuff. Go back to the studio for the next 4 yrs and maybe you'll get it right next time. When I buy the next JOP album I'll wait till I can find it used and then I'll buy if it's below $1.99.
