It's a bit surprising that Pantera waited until 1997 to release a live album, considering how brutal and powerful the band had been in concert. At an average Pantera show, it would not be unusual to see security evicting overzealous fans, and club bathrooms filled with bloody wads of paper towels from mosh pit injuries. Official Live 101 Proof captures the group in its natural, violent element, combining abrupt, barbed riffs with pulse-pounding beats and furious vocals. The record spans Pantera's career, from the classic guitar lick of "Cowboys from Hell" to the fuzzbomb fury of "Suicide Note Pt. 2" (from album The Great Southern Trendkill). As an encore, the band offers album buyers two new studio tracks, the bluesy bonecrusher "Where You Come From" and the grinding piledriver "I Can't Hide." As the fortress of alternative rock continues to crumble, Pantera stomp vindictively through the rubble, their metallic legacy intact. --Jon Wiederhorn

3 out of 5 stars Pantera Live CD.......2007-01-27

The CD has a very good list of songs from Pantera's repertoire. However the recording quality leaves something to be desired. I've purchased live albums from other bands that sounded almost as good as the original recordings. I've only listened to the CD in my car stereo, but had to do adjustments on the Bass, Treble and Mid-range to get a decent sound.

4 out of 5 stars Good for a live album.......2007-01-22

The production is very good--better than a lot of live albums. OL has a lot of the "classic" Pantera tracks and really is a kind of "best-of" collection. There are a coulple of new studio tracks as well, although they're kind of weak. Pantera's material really began falling-off after Far Beyond Driven and it shows on this collection.

This is an especially good buy if you're new to Pantera and don't want to buy all the individual discs.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite pantera album out of all of them.......2006-03-15

The Anti-Pantera crowd seems to be posting just to post, screaming for some desperate attention that they dont get in their lonely teenage lives...What's even better is hearing then yak on and on about how Dime couldnt play his guitar....these are the people who have never picked up a guitar, or if they did, it was briefly...Anyway, this is my favorite Pantera album. It captures what the show must have been like and the pure energy of a Pantera concert, it also captures one of the best metal guitar players in action. If you like good heavy metal, pick this album up

3 out of 5 stars Pantera live has room for improvement.......2006-02-25

official live 101 proof from what I remember about it and its been awhile since I have heard it(even tho I own it), is not one of the greatest live metal albums of all time. although it is good it could stand for improvements especialy in the sound quality.

one thing that really ticks me off about live albums from any band in any genre of music is the sound quality. some bands you cant really hear them playing the music so much as you can hear the crowd and background noise kinda muffling the music making for poor audio sound.

I have three live albums which are better in sound quality than official live. AC/DC's live album, Slipknots live album 9.0, and a live album from my city that KISS did on there rock the nation tour in 2004 when they recorded there live shows during that tour and gave each city a the recording of the concert they had just been too! In these three live cd's, the music sound quality is near studio sound quality. you can hear the crowd but the crowd and unwanted background noise is not drowning out the music. kinda like if you were to take a tape recorder to the show and record the whole concert. youd probably end up with a tape of which the crowd and background noise outdrained the bands music.

while Official live: 101 proof is still an awesome live album, I do hope someday the surviving members of Pantera reissue it and enhance the sound quality. Pantera are some of the heaviest of metal of its generation, even at times beating the likes of MetallicA and Megadeth as far as heavy goes.

so for those that just want a live metal album that they can pop in at home and listen too, this album is definetly worth it! but if your looking to get this because it's like a "best of" cd and features tunes not found on the "best of" cd or you just want a live album, of which you can pop in your car and cruise too and all that like I do, then this is not that live album and I would recommend sticking to the studio albums or if you dont want that many cd's hanging around your car for fear of them getting stolen or whatever, then buy Pantera's greatest hits or just burn your own cd of studio songs you like! I guess if I took the time to listen to this cd again it may gain 4 stars but because of the poor sound quality I remember it being, I can give it no more than 4 stars.

Album Description

Recorded live on July 19, 2003 at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana, California. This CD represents the return of the original lineup of dada, the 1990s alt-rock trio.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS !!! You will smile : ).......2007-04-20

Been a huge Dada fan since Puzzle & Dizz Knee Land (which was originally titled Disneyland on the pressing. Disney sued due to the "violent" nature of the subject matter, and subsequent issuances were re-spelled to pacify Disney (now a promoter of some far,far worse content in thier media). IMHO this is the best trio, if not the best band to come out of the 90's. It is very sad that they did not meet with more financial success. But they have put out music that is unequalled in it's muscianship, and complexity & simplicity at the same time.
I saw them live 1 time, at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem NC in 2004. It was an amazing night I'll never forget. Michael Gurley was there playing with the flu, no less, what dedication! They sounded flawless.
This CD is a great capture of thier in concert ability.
Joie Calio's performance of "Moon" is alone worth more than the price of the CD.
I find myself at a loss for words to describe the talent this trio exhibits......

5 out of 5 stars Captures the live experience.......2007-01-10

This CD aptly captures the live vibe of this talented band. As the band's first live album, the clarity of sound does justice to the complex musicianship and strong songwriting. The song selection is well balanced and shows off dada's considerable range and talent. A great live album from a brilliant live band.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Sanatanaesque.......2005-02-04

I saw dada in concert a year ago and have been a dada fanatic ever since. This is the first album I bought (at the concert). I love this album, but didn't become a dada fanatic until I bought their 5 studio albums. You can get most of their albums here, but should check out their store at dadatheband.com since some are cheaper there (several of their albums are sold out there so you need to get them here). This album is best for someone who loves dada already or loves to watch Santana in concert, for example. With this album you get a nine minute version of Ask The Dust, a drum solo that moves into their song Posters and audience participation with their two anthem songs - Feel Me, Don't You #$@ and Here Today, Gone Tomorrow. You also get a wonderful live versions of Dizz Knee Land and A Trip With My Dad. These three musicians are phenomenal. If you don't own any dada music, start with Puzzle. You can get the used IRS version cheap, but they have a new release with bonus tracks that you'll want to pick up later (so you may want to start with those anyway). All of their albums, including their solo albums are fantastic. If you like 60s psychedelic music, then pick up How To Be Found. I think their albums dada and El Subliminoso have more of a Alternative/Modern Rock feel, and American Highway Flower has a slight southern rock feel. All of them are 90s alternative with superior musicianship and harmonies.

5 out of 5 stars My Friend Joey C.......2004-06-17

Hello, I became a fan in 92 when a stereo store clerk demoed the new "DADA - Puzzle" CD for me. I went to see them open for STING in SEATTLE the following year and met the Band at a bar where they played again that night. They were even better in that dark, crappy little club! They were very approachable and signed autos & CDs. 5 years later my friend calls and says she just got hired as a nanny for this bass player from LA that just moved to Seattle. NO WAY! I got to come over and hang out with Joey Calio @ his house and we started Mountain Biking 5-6 times a mo. Well it's been 5 years since then and I am still a huge fan! I just went to see my friend in another dark, crappy Seattle Club. And I bought This CD plus the New Joey Calio & New DADA studio CDs, and Joey & the band signed them all! I play them all the time. GREAT guyz & Great Musicians! Buy all thier music! ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly captured.......2004-06-16

This is a band that was sorely overlooked in part because of their record company's demise. They truly have it all.. songwritting, great vocals and excellent musicianship. Unfortunately I've never seen them live however this cd does a great job of capturing them fleshing out some of their best songs. It is a good introduction to this trio.

4 out of 5 stars Something old...something new wave..........2004-07-18

"Playing the Fool: The Offical Live Album" captured GG just with the material they recorded before going "commercial" (for the most part)in their attempt to broaden their American audience. "Playing the Fool" catches the band in great form. It provides a nice cross selection of some of their finest material (although the highlights from "Octopus" shorts that terrific album).

"Civilian" actually is quite good. It's better than the other two "mainstream" rock albums the band recorded. Although it's missing much of the complex interplay of previous albums, the solid songwriting and melodies make it a memorable final gasp from this once grand, great prog rock band. I have fond memories of "Civilian" probably because I caught them on their last tour to support it at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco. I seem to recall that they announced it was the last show of their tour (although they did do one in Los Angeles a couple of days later). Maybe I just misunderstood and they said it was going to be "one of their last shows". Anyhow, despite the fact that they had all had quite a bit to drink (as I recall I did, too), they played a nearly flawless set.

4 out of 5 stars Before and After.......2001-07-16

This set is a good example of what happens when a great band attempts to go commercial. Disc one is Playing the Fool, showcasing the live band at the top of their form. This is an amazing recording. All the players here are amazing multi-intrementalists, and they effortlessly mix straight rock with recorder breaks, glockenspiel trios and electric violin, all played in freakishly complex rhythms and with amazing vocal interplay. Listening to the second disc, then, you wonder where all that went. It's straight guitar-keyboard rock here. There's still a Gentle Giant flavor here, and this is definitely not a bad album, but the unadventurousness is disappointing. It's easy to see why they broke up after this album was released. Overall, the set is highly recommended. The amazing Playing The Fool far outweighs the relatively weak Civilian.

5 out of 5 stars I CAN ACTUALLY ONLY RATE HALF OF IT.......2001-02-02

I Have yet to hear "Civilian", but "Playing The Fool' is one of the most astounding pieces of live music I've ever heard. I chose to put my review on this double package release over another issue of PTF because this is the one that everyone has told me has superior sound quality. I hear the other one is attrocious. Gentle Giant was one of the best prog rock acts, much more influneced by King Crimson as opposed to Yes Or ELP. They had the dissonance of KC with a dash of a medievil folk sound that made them very unique. PTF is by far what I would recomend first for anyone looking to check this band out. The live versions of these songs are even better than the originals. Highly recomended

4 out of 5 stars Civilian wasn't that bad.......2000-04-09

I'm pretty hardcore Giant, I learnt to play bass from Glass House, FreeHand (+Crimso). I think that, despite being a beat-oriented, semi-new wave offering, Civilian had a good sound and some good moments, particularly Underground. I really liked it better than Giant for a Day and Missing Piece, 2 of their other more 'commercial' offerings. I saw this tour as well, at Bill Graham's Old Waldorf. They stuck to the new stuff, but I thought it worked, although I felt sad that they did sort of have to try to 'sell out', but those were tough days for progrock. Remember Asia and Kayak?

5 out of 5 stars 5stars/2stars.......2000-03-14

Playing The Fool is Gentle Giant's finest recorded live performance. Recorded in 1977 it presents material from the band's finest era. Each cut is terrific as are the performances. Civilian, recorded in 1980, is the weakest in G.G's catalogue. Very little of value here other than perhaps Shadows In The Street. The quality of the this two-fer is, unlike the ONE WAY RECORDS version, terrific. Playing The Fool is highly recommended, Civilian is not...Simon

4 out of 5 stars Still going strong (and getting stronger) after all these years.......2005-06-05

Doesn't this guy ever get old? Here it is, nearly 30 years after his definitive live album, and Frampton still sounds like he actually still enjoys playing his old favorites on stage. Of course there are the inevitable Do You Feel Like We Do, and Baby, I Love Your Way, but what makes this album special is his unique interpretations of his newer songs from the Now CD. Verge of a Thing, and Not Forgotten both sound great, as do the rest of his numbers. Sad to think of Bob Mayo not playing here, but everyone here is a first rate musician. Hopefully we'll get another studio album soon from Peter with all new material; the Now album was his best since... well, I guess I'll just say it; it was perhaps his best ever. Also, am I the only person who would love to hear Frampton live with totally new material? Or maybe a disk featuring tracks with only Frampton's vocals from The Herd & Humble Pie years. Surprised that no one has reviewed this yet. Amazon.com doesn't give much info on this release, so I thought I'd rectify that. This is the second brand-new release on the "Mormon Tabernacle Choir" label, following their April 2003 release of "Consider the Lilies." The sound on this release is, if anything, even cleaner than the previous release, with the Choir and orchestra very evenly balanced. The programming includes a mix of both traditional and brand new songs, a couple of which (Stephen Paulus's "Hymn For America," and Charles Osgood's "The Pledge of Allegiance") were commissioned especially for this recording. Additional note: several of these songs were included on the Choir's 2003 Northeastern States tour, which was a huge success. I highly recommend this recording!

5 out of 5 stars David Lindley Live.......2006-04-09

The disc sounds just like the concert tour I saw, and both are amazing

4 out of 5 stars Keep Lookin...........2005-03-09

It can be a bit frustrating searching out Lindley's best stuff these days. His 80's El Rayo-X years are well represented and usually at a good deal, but for his wealth of recent "solo" material recorded first with Hani Naser and then with Wally Ingram you need to go to a show (best choice!), or surf over to his website, davidlindley.com, where the action really is. These duo (guitar and drum) formate recordings are surprisingly full sounding and wonderfully musical and entertaining. I'm glad amazon at least has a few later recordings listed as imports. They are all good. (I give this one 4 stars due to sound quality, but it is an official bootleg after all, some of it from the tapes taken from bootleggers caught I presume in the crowd.). More power to you Mr. Dave, long may you strum.....

5 out of 5 stars Deep Well.......2004-08-24

I owe Dylan heaps, and not just for helping me mature during the late 1960s. According to Robbie Robertson, Dylan accelerated The Band to full maturity too. But more musicians than I dare to count have passed through his various incarnations. And, keen to look around corners, I trailed after Doug Sahm, Norman Blake, & David Lindley, to name a few from which I've profited. Which brings me multi-instrumentalist, Lindley. Briefly, much as I like the Ex-Rayo CDs, its the first Madagascan CD, this live set & another (unlisted here) called 'Twango Bango' which are worth seeking out. This last, obtained from Lindley at a Blues Fest near Brisbane, Aust. a few years back, roars to life on track 4 with,'Coot From Tennessee' and segues through a tender reading of,'Do You want my Job', van Zandt's,'I am a Patriot," & a stunning version of the Dylan/O'Keefe,'Well,Well,Well.' At 70 minutes plus, it's a concert's worth of praiseworthy interpretations of unjustly lesser known works by some stellar artists. The musianship is stunning. Lindley's reedy tenor plaintively pitched just above his stringed things, is the perfect foil to the lush variety of skin man, Wally Ingram's superlative drumming.

4 out of 5 stars Catchy live album by two-man band.......2002-06-04

I was loaned this by a friend, after raving about the Kaiser-Lindley "World Out of Time" Madagascar series. This is a live album by guitarist David Lindley and percussionist Hani Naser. They are the only two musicians. The songs are largely from Lindley's back catalog, including some El Rayo-X cuts. The music has an old-timey blues feel, with several songs sounding like they could have been written a century ago. Lindley's voice is a cross between Levon Helm of the Band and "O Brother, Where Art Thou". He's playing acoustic, with a fair amount of slide. My favorite track is the office-party luau "Tiki Torches at Twilight". I'm not sure I want to know what "She Took Off My Romeos" is about--sounds awfully Bobbitt-y--but it's a very catchy song. And what a compliment, to tell a woman that Hitler would have loved her "More Than Eva Braun". There's also a Warren Zevon cover, "Play It All Night Long". This CD is well worth checking out, so "let's all get normal at the luau".

5 out of 5 stars Live David Lindley!.......2001-11-30

I bought this CD at a performance. David Lindley is a national treasure, one who can pick up a stringed instrument and play. He is great on this album, with acoustic tunes from El Rayo-X and others. It is available on his web site along with several other live albums. All are worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars The Double Trio hits the ground running........2007-05-21

King Crimson has historically been a band that's always been better live than on record, and the Double Trio lineup of the '90s in many ways exemplifies this. Consisting of two guitar trios (guitarists Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew, bassists/stick players Tony Levin and Trey Gunn and drummers Bill Bruford and Pat Mastelotto-- essentially a fusion of the '80s Crimson and the Sylvian/Fripp touring band), it seems that in the studio there was a bit too much of a tendency towards restraint, but when spread out on a stage, the band was able to really cut loose and could be really overwhelming-- certainly it was for me, the first of four shows I saw of them nearly 12 years ago still stands out as the greatest rock concert I've ever seen.

In any event, after doing some studio recordings, Fripp and company hit the road, playing a series of shows in Argentina. "B'boom" is a compilation of these shows, showcasing some new material and reachign back into the band's catalog for some old. For a little over 100 minutes, this group, which was still not what they would be, tears it up.

Everything here is absolutely fantastic-- showcasing the muscular stances of the band ("VROOOM", "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part II") but also their flexibility ("Sex, Sleep, Eat, Drink, Dream") and energy ("Indiscipline"). Along the way, there's fantastic readings of old favorites like "Frame by Frame", what may be the definitive takes on "Red" and "Heartbeat", the latter in particular, always a song that seems to be lacking, picks up an unexpected, noisy extra guitar part that really carries it.

Another note-- even a decade after its release as I write this review, I can't help but marvel at the sound of this recording-- crisp and clean and well balanced, loud and up front, all six instrumentalists can be distinctly and clearly heard. "B'boom" really set the standard for the live album.

Remarkable as this record is, I actually think it pales compared to where the band would be in a year or two, as illustrated by "VROOOM VROOOM", but there's a lot to love here. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The King lives.......2007-02-08

The band's first live shows in ten years and the first to feature the Double Trio. This wasn't originally meant to be released however, due to bootleg versions being put out, Robert decided to release this after the fact. The show starts off with Vrooom from their newest ep and is quickly followed by Frame By Frame from 1981's Discipline. Next, we get another new song Sex, Sleep, Eat, Drink, Dream performed as well as the earlier songs. Red comes blazing out in full glory. One Time is a pretty ballad from the Vrooom ep. B'Boom and Thrak are great instrumentals. Improv-Two Sticks features Tony Levin and Trey Gunn going at it big time. Elephant Talk and Indiscipline take us back to Discipline again. Vrooom Vrooom is another great new instrumental. Matte Kudasai is one of the most beautiful ballad played sweet. From here we go to the Larks album for The Talking Drum and Larks, Tongues In Aspic which rock out loud. Heartbeat starts with a beautiful introduction played by Robert Fripp. Sleepless is as always cool. We end the release with three new songs People, B'Boom(reprise), and Thrak. This is an excellent release and is a fine live album.

3 out of 5 stars Get Heavy Construkction instead........2005-12-04

This is the first concert of this incarnation; as a result, they haven't really found their groove yet and are basically playing the straight versions of the songs. It's actually a very good record, nonetheless, but I can't recommend it given that Heavy Construkction provides much better live versions of most of the same songs and, unless you're simply a completist, there's not really any reason to have both.

5 out of 5 stars excellent live disc.......2005-02-14

quick review just to say that this 2-disc set is amazing, and definitely worthy of a purchase by any fan of the mighty King Crimson.

Elephant Talk

disc two:

4 out of 5 stars Not for everyone..........2001-11-30

Okay, the more recent VROOOM VROOOM compilation probably gives a better look at what the "Double Trio" version of King Crimson was capable of; but this "official bootleg" is a snapshot of time. Specifically, it shows this band, a collection of overwhelmingly-skilled professionals, beginning to find its identity _as_ a band. Some of the playing is unaccustomedly sloppy for a King Crimson - which is to say, up to the higest standards set by most other bands. The repertoire is terrifying, both in the difficulty of some of the numbers and the sheer noise level of others. The first time I heard "THRAK" on disc 1 - which was the first time I ever heard "THRAK" at all, as I hadn't then picked up the Double Trio's studio work - I wasn't sure it was music; it went beyond dissonance to another place entirely.

The Crimson of the 1990s and early 2000s has reinvented the concept of heavy metal - not, please, "speed metal" (though there are some blinding solos on some tracks, and especially in the material introduced in the 2000 album "The ConstruKction of Light"), but dark, grinding, distorted slabs of metallic sound. Interspersed with this we find some of the gamelan-influenced pieces of the '80s Crim, a very few tracks from the "Lark's" band (including the heaviest piece of metal ever recorded, "Red"), and the simply funky new song, "People."

Unquestionably from the "not for everyone" department, but if you like this kind of thing you'll love "B'boom."

5 out of 5 stars Giant for a Night.......2007-02-07

This is the ultimate GG live collection and a good one to get if you're only getting one. The "On Reflection" madrigal counterpoint singing is worth the price of admission. This is a good document of the unsung heroes of prog rock and maybe the most talented and underrated band of all time.

5 out of 5 stars The One to Have If You're Only Getting One.......2005-05-13

I know, it's a tough call, but if I had to choose only one Gentle Giant disc to own, this most definitely would be it!

Onstage, the band really shines in its full raging power, covering the whole dynamic range from a whisper to a full-out roar! And not only that, the frighteningly tight ensemble playing is just as great as ever, plus the fact the band liked to tweak the arrangements every so often is a great bonus. Derek Shulman's voice just roars authoritatively without being overbearing over the top of his bandmate's ever unpredictable musical twists and turns. Keyboardist Kerry Minnear really stands out too with his mind-boggling mix of baroque and modern classical intricacy, ferocious growling organ and sheer Clavinet-driven funkiness that Stevie Wonder would be proud of. Drummer John Weathers drives things along with tons of oomph yet listens to the smallest details, complimented by Ray Shulman's perky bass and violin. Guitarist Gary Green whild being able to dish out the dissonance also has a healthy love of the blues that comes screaming out. And not to mention, those frightening interlocking vocal arrangements, YIKES! Being able to pull that off live really says something.

And the song selection? IMPECCABLE!!! Couldn't ask for any better, a great overview of what made The Giant so unique and revered. This was The Giant at their creative peak (the album was culled from the "Free Hand" tour).

Grab this!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing But Superlatives.......2003-12-19

I read every review before writing this one tonight. So many of them are right on. These guys were incredible. Unbelieveably intricate and involved compositions, performed by virtuoso musicians. Their live shows were spellbinding, funny and lots of fun. I was fortunate to watch one soundcheck in 1976 (my friends opened for them) and to watch them rehearse was awe-inspiring. Even just hashing things out, they were beyond belief. How did God happen to put these five magicians together in one ensemble? The results are heavenly, and this album does a great job of capturing the energy, talent and musicianship that was Gentle Giant live. Go buy it.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent document, though not perfect.......2003-06-19

Having been a fan since Free Hand was released, I recall hearing this album first on the radio when it was released, and rushed out to buy it (actually I got it for Christmas). At the time I hadn't heard all their albums so much of it I heard for the first time here. Now, I have every album and can put each of these versions in perspective.

First off, every song has been re-arranged for live performance. GG were good at using the studio as a tool, and their albums always had interesting sonic appeal. When they play live, as with many bands, they cannot reproduce their sound exactly, unless you have the $$ of Pink Floyd. Therefore you get more rocking versions of these tunes for the most part. John P Wethers replaced Martin Shulman as the drummer after Octopus. I read an interview where they described Shulman as "too fiddley". Personally I enjoyed his jazzy Bruford-style drumming, especially on Octopus. With In A Glass House and Power and the Glory, Mr Wethers put his strong backbeat into the technically dazzling music and the band really gelled. After Free Hand, this band was established as one of the top prog bands, but had their own style, drawing from classical renaissance and baroque influences, especially in the vocal and keyboard arrangements. I always thought that Gary Green was an excellent guitar player, but his solos were always very bluesy. In the same interview the Shulmans said they liked the contrast.

Back to the live album, and I refer to the vinyl here;
Side one starts off with an excellent rocking version of Just the Same, followed by a very HEAVY version of Proclamation, then On Reflection is rearranged for string quartet, then the vocal part comes in, then a completely new section is added. It's all classic GG.

Side two starts with an AMAZING re-arrangement of the key themes from Octopus, stunning and dazzling in it's invention. Boys In The Band leads into a georgeous acoustic duo based on Knots and Dog's Life, leading into Knots itself, seguing into Knots re-arranged for recorders! A lovely keyboard solo (I mean just the keys) leads into Advent of Panurge. (Themes missing are Cry For Everyone and The River). Excellent, and by far the showpiece of the album. The side closes with a dip into the past, Funny Ways, not really much different than the original. For some reason, when I hear this version, it sound like there are about ten people on stage instead of five.

Side three has some excellent material from Glass House and a truly angular and bizarre version of So Sincere, featuring a long bluesy guitar solo (a bit long) and ending in a big percussion movement by all (which I think originally appeared on Interview, a great album). Incidentally I saw GG during their final Civilian tour and they were still performing many of the same arrangements.

Side four is a bit of an anticlimax. A rather rushed version of Free Hand is followed by "Breakdown In Brussels", a string quartet version of Sweet Georgia Brown, a la Stephan Grappelli, excellent but why bother...Then the album closes with Peel the Paint, a rocker that does nothing to show off the band, really, though I believe there is a decent solo by Minnear.

Overall the album is good from the beginning but loses interest by side 4. The audience is very enthusiastic in each performance (recorded at various locations on their workd tour) and kind of become part of the performance in places.

Final note: I have a complaint about the original vinyl recording; The entire mix was put through some slapback echo, no doubt to reproduce the sound if you were sitting in a theatre. Well at first it didn't bother me, but now I can't listen to it, it is extremely annoying hearing the snare bounce back EVERY time. I have listened to the excerpts here and I note this effect has been removed. Thank you!

I recommend you also seek out the King Biscuit Flower Hour performance, from 1975. It is an excellent quality, dry, clean recording, true to the sound of this amazing band live, with many of the same tunes.

5 out of 5 stars The very best of G.G., performed live in a remarkable way !.......2002-12-12

Here you find almost the whole best stuff from Gentle Giant : immortal classics such as "Proclamation", "On reflection", "Peel the paint","Free hand", this CD showing the grandeur of this prolific band(above all from the point of view of their creativity)...

Usually I don't like medleys very much, expecially talking about the complex suites/songs of prog music, but in this case... well that one from "Octopus", very well performed in this live as usual, is memorable, even if it's characterized by a "smaller" format, of course, than the original one.

Once upon a time a fascinating ensemble from England, able to play such diverse instruments ... made us know their fantastic style, performing every single note of their baroque songs, during their solos !! They didn't use any sequencer, computer or other "invention" of modern technology ... this live being an important teachement to all the musicians and a lesson from the past as well !! Moreover the jazzy style of Gary Green, the strange time signatures, helped by the versatile drumming style of John Weathers, suitable for baroque music, make this live essential and well worth checking out...

Another must have by GENTLE GIANT !!
