In 1976, when the Eagles, Peter Frampton, and Heart ruled the rock airwaves, along came five scruffy young men (the lead guitarist was maybe all of 18 and dressed in a schoolboy's uniform) from Australia playing some of the rowdiest, hardest, dirtiest rock of all time. Screaming "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)," singer Bon Scott teased like a braggart. Sensing the rock community's growing dissatisfaction with bloated, epic-scaled bands, AC/DC were indeed a high-voltage act: their drummer nailed the beat with fury, their bluesy guitar riffs mutated into something metallic and sharp-edged, and Scott's vocals took the shrillness of early Robert Plant to a leaner and meaner place. "Live Wire" is one of the most electrifying hard rock songs imaginable, "High Voltage" and "TNT" are the musical equivalent of touching exposed nerves with a rusty fork, and "Jack" proves that white rock dudes can, contrary to popular belief, get down. 5 out of 5 stars From The Land Down Under, they take it to the top!.......2007-07-11

After getting "Back in Black" a long time ago, I decided to check out a Bon Scott-era AC/DC album. Sure enough, it was "High Voltage". While it may not be remembered as much as "BIB", "High Voltage" shows that even when an album doesn't sell ten-million plus copies, it can still be awesome. Being AC/DC's first of many albums, this can tend to not get as much airplay or critical acclaim (because Heaven knows that the critics must have been outraged hearing this in '76!). However, the music rocks and this is actually one of AC/DC's best albums.

"It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)": A five minute opener filled with plenty of crunchy riffs, an excellent performance by Bon, and even a bagpipe solo! (The Young brothers and Scott were from Scotland.) An awesome anthem that gets things off to a great start.
"Rock and Roll Singer": The riffs provide an excellent groove, one of AC/DC's finest, and Bon delivers lyrics about living the dream of being a rock star. Another great anthem!
"The Jack": One of AC/DC's most immortal songs. This is a six-minute, vintage-styled blues song with so many double-entendres, it's brilliant! The whole song flows excellently, and I get a kick out of the ending!
"Live Wire": According to the booklet inside the album, this song kicked off concerts for years in their early career, and one can see why. This is also the second-longest song on the album with an amazing guitar solo by Angus Young, prefiguring those of his future.
"TNT": Ha! Probably even people who don't listen to AC/DC (and in this day and age, virtually every rock fan does) have heard this song. Love the guitar riff, it has a great groove, and you can tell Bon Scott had a blast singing them lyrics! An AC/DC staple even thirty years later, this is good-time rock and roll!
"Can I Sit Next To You, Girl": This song has an old-fashioned swing to it that gives a unique touch to the album. A cool song, this makes me think of what it must have been like going to a high-school dance in AC/DC's time.
"Little Lover": Another blues-styled rocker very similar to "The Jack", but the lyrics are less double-entendre styled and more of those "I'm so in love with my lady!" lyrics, which make for a nice image, coming from Bon Scott's one-of-a-kind delivery.
"She's Got Balls": Such a title would bring up very strange confusion, and hearing them is another. Imagine hearing a twenty-year-old guy with shoulder-length hair and arm tattoos wailing, "The lady's got balls!/ She's got BA-A-ALLS!". Nevertheless, another great groove-rocker.
"High Voltage": More lyrics about being an independent and free rocker, you gotta love it! The riff is great, too, and sounds a bit like T. Rex's "Bang A Gong, Get It On" riff. Actually, I read that Malcolm Young was a fan of the band, so that makes perfect sense. An excellent way to close the album.

Overall:
"Rolling Stone" magazine said this was an "all-time low" in hard rock history when it first came out. Now, it's sold more than 3 million in the U.S. alone, and still boasts a handful of AC/DC classics! After having listened to this album for a long time, those critics couldn't be further from the truth! Anyway, the remastering on this album is excellent, the raw tone of the guitars is great, and this is an album that is sure to keep you interested. The only thing I would like to point out is that, compared to later albums, the remastering of the drums on this album is terrible! Hearing it on "It's A Long Way...", compared to songs such as "For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)", or countless others, it could have used more work!
Anyway, with all things said and done, this is a great debut album from five guys that know rock and roll! If you like AC/DC, you're gonna love this album! Thanks for the time, catch ya later!

4 out of 5 stars The Begining Of A Legend.......2007-01-04

Ac/Dc are a band unlike any other. In a world of change this band has stuck to it's guns and has not changed no matter what the musical climate. Many critizize the band for this but I say it takes guts to believe in yourself that much that you don't care what your peers are doing. Look at what happened in the late 90s when grunge overtook the world,it would have been so easy for Ac/Dc to water down their sound to fit in but they never did.Right to the end they played the same high energy music with screaming vocals and searing guitars played to a blues rhythm. Many have tried to imitate them but no one has succeded because blues music (which is what this is based in) can't be taught or copied,it comes from the heart. Now,let me go on with the review of High Voltage in particular. This is one of the very best Ac/Dc CD's ever recorded.Other than Highway To Hell, this is the best Bon Scott fronted CD's ever.Every song is instantly memorable, and is also easy to sing along with.Starting with "It's A Long Way To The Top" which is the perfect opening song for a rock band,to the amazingly catchy "Rock N Roll Singer" to one of the greatest sing a long songs ever "The Jack" basically there is not a single bad song in the bunch.TNT and Little Lover are my personal favorites from this CD but there honestly is not one bad song. Many people have put this band down because Angus didn't play a million notes a second like Eddie Van Halen or Yngwie but Angus could say it all with 3 notes bent with feeling. Most guitar players out there don't understand that.Angus is a master of feeling.Ac/Dc is all about making the listener "feel" the music, not just listen to it. Many have also given negative reviews to Bon's vocals, sure he didn't have the highest range but he had something even more special,he had a very distinctive voice, when you heard an Ad/Dc song you KNEW it was him singing...to a lesser degree Brian Johnson carried on that tradition with Back in Black and beyond...it is crucial for a singer to be distinctive and Bon's voice fit PERFECTLY with this music. This is a true masterpiece, not just for all fans of hard rock and metal but for fans of rock and roll period, because while it does have it's heavy moments it also has lots of rhythm and blues and a lot of soul.Absolutely you should buy this CD.

The upside:A great CD,filled with catchy songs, the highlights are "Tnt" "Little Lover" "The jack" "High Voltage" "It's A Long Way","Rock And Roll Singer",and "Live Wire" (realizing I mentioned nearly every song, but that's seriously how good this is)

The downside:Ac/Dc never changes, for many this is a bad thing, you can ALWAYS know what to expect from them. You won't ever find a disco song or a rap song or a country song on an Ac/Dc album. There are no surprises. However,in my book that's a good thing. If you want great dancable rock and roll that you can sing along, you always know you can rely on Ac/Dc...aside from all the albums having the same style (which is good in my opinion) there are no downsides at all

The bottom line:Good time rock and roll at it's best.It won't make you think too hard,it's easy to remember and fun to sing along and dance to.You should run not walk to buy this, the donutman says so!!!

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2007-05-13

While it may be true that all AC/DC albums sound the same, something about High Voltage really stands apart from the rest. Maybe it's the fact that it's one of the bands first records that makes you really appreciate and recognize the raw guitar riffs and simple lyrics. Maybe it's the distinct vocal sound, or the slightly muddy production. Whatever it is, AC/DC would eventually have much greater success, but the early stuff really is catchy and worth owning. Pick up High Voltage (HIGH voltage, rock and roll!)

5 out of 5 stars First and Best Album of AC/DC.......2006-12-28

So many good songs...

High Voltage
Long Way to the Top
TNT
Live Wire

Those are my favorite, but the others rock as well. This is my favorite AC/DC album. It's arguably equal with Back in Black, but I love this one better because of Bon Scott. What can you say? This album is AC/DC all the way and it's amazing!!!

5 out of 5 stars AC/DC and Bon Scott At Their Best.......2006-07-27

I think, High Voltage is a classic example of raw rock and roll band. With its catchy riffs, and simple lyrics, High Voltage is a fun and entertaining album to listen to. Bon Scott really puts all of his effort into laying down those lines in TNT, The Jack and Rock and Roll Singer. I's take Bon over Brian Johnson andy day. Angus and Malcolm are thebest two rock guitar player I have evr heard in my life. And Phil Rudd's drum sound and Mark Evans' and George Young's pumping bassline really bring the AC/DC sound together. Well, if you can get your hands on this album, you will really understrand and appreciate what AC/DC is really about. Ride On, Bon

4 out of 5 stars great album.......2006-06-30

High Voltage is a pretty good album. It has some of the catchiest riffs ever including those of It's A Long Way To The Top, TNT, Rock 'N' Roll Singer, High Voltage, and Live Wire. These are all very good songs. The bagpipes work perfectly in It's A Long Way To The Top. The lyrics in TNT might be something I could have wrote, but the riff makes it a great song. The chorus in Rock 'N' Roll Singer is excellent and the bass line and riff in Live Wire is great. High Voltage also has a great riff and a great chorus. Can I Sit Next To You Girl is not all that great, but at least its not bad. She's Got Balls has a great chorus and a good enough riff.

But there are some songs on here I've never liked. How can people like The Jack? The lyrics are too predictable and its just too bluesy to be a good AC/DC song. It also has a really bad chorus. And Little Lover's chorus is ok but compared to She's Got Balls it's nothing.

But that doesn't matter. The good definitely outwieghs the bad on this album and overall its great.

5 out of 5 stars AC/DC ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-09

ac/dc's album has shown us all how much we miss bon scott. this is one of his greatest achievments. high voltage is the best song on this album

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Classic.......2004-02-11

I dont understand why someone would write a 500 word essay and totaly blast this cd in a negative way (see previous review). Obviously the guy is a ass*&^%. Awesome cd it's to bad I didnt discover it until 2001. If you like 80's metal youll love this cd!

4 out of 5 stars Probably one of the best unknown metal albums ..........2002-02-20

... the guy who suggested that the internet arose from mankinds need to hear this album .... I can only concur :P

If there any justice in this world this album would have achieved the general aclaim of the likes of genre classics such as "van halen 1", "wheels of steel" (saxon), "pride" (white lion), etc and ... well you see the sort of thing I'm on about. Somehow though Q5 never made the breakthrough.
I can only imagine this is becuase they went soft AOR after this album - big mistake, they should have stuck to it then pimped thier back catalogue when the breakthrough came.

As a cautionary note I would add that there are a couple of weak songs and the shrill vocals wont to be to everyones taste (hence the 4 stars) but the overall musical style is very much in the early Van Halen/White Lion harder-end-of-glam-metal tradition with very tight hard rocking drums/bass/guitar throughout. Floyd Rose's guitar playing even holds up respectably in this sort company (although he isnt as good as Eddie or Vito). You can certianly see why he invented the locking tremelo ... he gives it some serious stick, but in a way that compliments his style and the music generally.

This is sort of cd that the '10 on your car stereo volume dial was designed for. ...

5 out of 5 stars Fan from Turkey.......2001-09-21

One of the best heavy metal bands ever...
The inventor of the superb tremolo system Floyd Rose, himself plays the guitars.
(Although I mailed him, he did not answer :(
The sound and the power of the songs are nothing but one of the best in metal.
Although they had many ads in English metal mag Kerrang! in mid 80s they never bacame popular in Europe.
Buy this album and thank me forever.
The other album When The Mirror Cracks is much different from that one, but I think you'll love it too, especially if you are not in too deep with metal.
I consider myself as the Q5 ambassador to Turkey

5 out of 5 stars Thank God for Amazon.com.......2001-04-10

I've been looking for this album forever. I originally recorded the title track off of "Finger's MetalShop" on a Sunday Night in the mid 80's. The scratchy tape of that song drove me crazy, and now I can listen to it as it was meant to be heard. I had tried to find the album in record stores all over Long Island, but to no avail. Eventually however, the need of people to listen to Q5 caused the creation of the INTERNET. Now - this album can be yours too.

5 out of 5 stars This band desevers more then just 5 stars........2000-11-22

I am completely blown away by this. THis is like the metal I remember, and still prefer to listen too. Magnificant and wonderful. I just can't stop listening to the title track. It has such an awesome. almost spacerock feel to it. Wonderful metal band. ITs a must own for all true metalheads. Posers stay away you wouldn't apprecitate them.I just love this cd.Nothing comapares to stuff that sounds like this. Infact no words to really describe music like this only to say to others hear it for yourself. I promise you.It will be loved by all dedicated headbangers all over. The album art is just gorgeous. 3 out of 5 stars Medium Voltage...At Best.......2006-06-30

This CD fixes Maynard Ferguson in a smaller setting than what one is used to seeing with him. He is joined by only six other musicians rather than a big band. I rate this CD as average, as most of the songs are rather nondescript, but not totally unpleasing to the ear. The three songs that are most enjoyable are the classic Hoagy Carmichael tune "Stardust," the Caribbean-calypso flavored "Marketplace," and the soft, beautiful ballad, written by Maynard himself and enhanced by the lovely guitar work of Michael Higgins and the heart-felt vocals of the late Carl Anderson "Walking on the Pier." Most of the other songs are mediocre at best. There aren't a lot of thrills from the
often shrill blasts of Ferguson's trumpet. From time to time,
decent solos emanate from the instruments of some of the other
musicians on the set, but nothing extraordinary. If you can find it on sale or in a used record/cd store, I would buy it
simply for the vocal work done by Carl Anderson on the "Walking on the Pier" tune, where Ferguson I think, is probably also at his best. In the end, the CD "High Voltage, Vol. 1," turns out to be medium voltage, at best.

5 out of 5 stars makes me wanna dance.......2006-04-23

i don't have any fancy musical review opinions, but "danger!" is one of those songs that just makes you want to dance. and i like the screaming chorus, i just scream right along. how can you resist "fire in the taco bell, fire in the gates of hell"? come to think of it, taco bell is a lot like hell...

2 out of 5 stars Danger High Voltage... dull song........2005-09-13

Who said that a mix of voices with strange music tones always worked? In this case Electric sex failed A LOT with this song, a mix of all kind of instruments, the voices are also not matching at all the kind of music they wanted to create. Just trying to hard to make it a disco song, but not achiving it mostly makes it a dull song. The most annoying part of the song is the continue almost scream of the song name in the chorus like a hundred times. It happens that you feel like grabing the cd and smashing it against a wall. its a pity that in such a great cd theres a song like this and a cd named after this bad song.

      5 out of 5 stars incredible.......2003-04-13

excellent song. jack white does vocals though electric six denys its him. yea right.

5 out of 5 stars what the hell?.......2003-03-29

this is one of those bands that you really don't believe will be good, doesn't disco-metal sound like the ultimate musical contradiction? But, much to my suprise, they make it work, and it's a suprise that i was happy to find. This is probably some of the most fun i've had listening to music in a while, they're funny and they make you dance, whats so wrong about that. absolutely nothing, an that's precisely the reason this band needs more attention, stupid and brilliant at the same time. Bravo!

      4 out of 5 stars zap!.......2003-02-10

This disco-rockin single has me dancing around my room in my underwear. And it had Jack White howling backup. Obviously, it's great.

Whew! --Lorry Fleming

4 out of 5 stars Classic Swedish Power Metal Revisited.......2006-11-27

I must admit that when I think of Swedish bands, it's usually a classic melodic rock band (Europe, Treat) or a modern death metal band (In Flames, Dark Tranquillity) that comes to mind, not a NWOBHM-influenced power metal band. But that's exactly the kind of music Swedish metallers Overdrive delivered.

Overdrive embraced the power metal lyrics and imagery (this album's cover is proof of that), but their sound was clearly influenced by the early 80's New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene. Their sound draws heavily on bands like Saxon, Diamond Head, White Spirit, and early Iron Maiden. It rocks hard, but there is still a melodic aspect to the songs on Swords and Axes - the band's 1984 sophomore album. It's not the same kind of Warlord/Helstar/Crimson Glory style power metal you'd find in the US at the time, nor is it the Helloween-style German power metal. This is the kind of power metal only a band fed a steady diet of NWOBHM can offer. You could slip an Overdrive song in the middle of a Neat Records compilation and no one would know the difference!

The 2003 Metal for Muthas reissue of Swords and Axes features digitally remastered sound as well as 6 bonus tracks. The first 4 tracks are from the band's decidedly un-metal 1993 reunion, but the last two (demo tracks from 1985) are straight-up (and sped-up) power metal all the way.

Swords and Axes is another lost classic that has been brought to light. Old school metal fans should make it a point to check this one out.
