5 out of 5 stars One of the GREASTEST bands ever!!!!!!!!.......2006-07-02

If you don't like this band then go slap yourself. All the members of this band are great. Alot of bands that people now listen to sound all the same, this is one of the bands that sticks out. People go out and buy all of Nevermore's cds.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Music in a Dead World.......2006-04-23

When I was first getting into metal, this was one of my first 'real metal' CDs I ever bought (i.e. not poppy nu-metal like Korn, Skinlab and ilk.) As such, my review might be a bit biased in favor of Nevermore, but nonetheless, this album rules. I'd argue that either this (or maybe Dreaming Neon Black) is Nevermore's musical apex thus far. And since Nevermore is one of my favorite bands, that this is one of the best metal CDs ever made. And it is with good reason that I say this.

With so many bands vying for attention, there's a lot of unoriginality in music. It's rare for bands to draw from so many influences that their music defies logical classification. Yet Nevermore does just that (Iced Earth is also one of the few to do so.) They brilliantly combine the best of progressive metal, power metal, traditional metal, gothic metal as well as other subgenres. Dead Heart in a Dead World (a.k.a. DHDW) is not only the result of Nevermore 's unique style, but their varied songs as well.

This is the best feature of DHDW. Each song has its own combination of levity, seriousness, darkness, mellowness, heaviness, etc. For instance, the songs 'Evolution 169,' 'Inside Four Walls,' and 'Sound of Silence' all have some degree of levity in their lyrics (if only because one has lyrics from a Simon and Garfunkle song), yet 'Inside Four Walls' also has a degree of political seriousness about it that neither of the other two has.

Likewise, 'Dead Heart in a Dead World,' 'The Heart Collector,' and 'Believe in Nothing' all have a degree of darkness in them, yet 'Dead Heart in a Dead World' has a musical heaviness in it that neither of the other two (which are more ballad-esque) have.

It is hard to overstate the uniqueness of each song. Some songs will make you smile, some will make you think, and others will make you despair. And there is never any point where one has to skip tracks because every song is excellent. All of this while Nevermore performs interestingly original music that, while not always the most technical in metal, is so beautiful that it doesn't even matter.

Unfortunately, Nevermore's followup albums aren't as good because they lack the emotional variance that DHDW has. They are increasingly misanthropic, and while there are traces of that on this album, it is not overdone as it is on the followups. That's not to say they are bad because they're still very good, but it lacks the depth that DHDW and Dreaming Neon Black have.

If you have any appreciation of metal music, you will buy this CD. Then you'll buy Dreaming Neon Black.

4 out of 5 stars ????.......2006-03-13

alright.I was expecting a little bit better, i guess i am gonna stop buying CD's and start buying just songs:)

4 out of 5 stars The genesis of a metal band.......2006-02-24

This is Nevermore's turn towards concept albums...they established themselves with the first two albums and worked out the small issues that all bands start with and it comes together in this, the beginning of their signature sound. The whole album has a strong push from start to finish. I personally find their album Dreaming Neon Black to be their best to date, lyrically, musically and general feel. They flex some lyrical muscle and show off with the musical pyrotechnics in this album though. I believe in liking a band through and through, and no collection would be complete with only a few of their albums. Seeing them live at Gigantour was also a real treat. They are ever the critics of their own music which means they care about what they put out. The sound tech was pretty bad until someone kicked him halfway through the set...and they admitted it. Few bands will do that, admit that something went wrong. But they pushed through and kicked some serious ass. All in all, get anything with their name on it. The lyrics are deep, the sound is unique (especially for something coming from Seattle) and they seem to be a humble group of musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Friggin amazing.......2005-11-16

God I love Nevermore. They are one of the best bands that formed in the 90's. After having plenty of strong material under its belt before, Nevermore enter the new millennium with their best album yet. Here, you've got soaring vocals from Warrel Dane, great bass from Jim Sheppard, and awesome drumming from Van Williams. Towering over everything, however, is the guitar work of the one and only Jeff Loomis. How good is this album? Read on for the tracks.

1. Narcosynthesis - Very good song. I love the opening riff. "How did it come to this? Narcosynthesis!" 5/5

2. We Disintegrate 5/5

3. Inside Four Walls - The lyrics on this song are exellent. Warrel shows how great his lyrics are. "Inside four walls/Inside four walls my friend/They took away your freedom/and the pigs still preach their lies!"

4. Evolution 169 5/5

5. The River Dragon Has Come - THE bets song on the album! Don't let the clean intro fool you, this is possibly the heaviest song on the album, featuring an amazing 7-string riff. 6/5

6. The Heart Collector 5/5

7. Engines Of Hate - One of the heaviets songs on the album. 5/5

8. The Sound Of Silence - The S&G cover. Better than the original! 6/5

9. Insignificant - The better of the two ballads! 5/5

10. Believe In Nothing - Possibly Nevermore's most well-known song. 5/5

11. Dead Heart In A Dead World - Great closer to this album. 5/5

So, if you're a metalhead, you'll love this.

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

5 out of 5 stars Lovely music!.......2001-12-18

These CDs are for lovers of Irish music and of the "old-timey" sound of John McCormack. The songs themselves are lovely, and James Flannery sings them exactly as they need to be sung... in a simple and straightforward manner. The music is evocative of the sound and spirit of a long-ago time. The accompanying book gives interesting background information about Thomas Moore and also about the songs. Good listening for a rainy day or a snowy night with the fire blazing.

Zazou specializes in ambient soundtracks for nonexistent movies that take their cues from various world music genres. This time out it's Irish sacred music, and Zazou, with the help of a small army of international stars including Egyptian percussionist Hossam Ramzy, trumpet wiz Mark Isham, and French picker extraordinaire Thierry Robin, has fashioned 13 moody settings for ancient and modern texts that feature mournful vocals by Brede Mayock and Lasairfhiona ni Chonaola. The result is new agey, but the passion of the singers and some disturbing instrumental touches keep the music from getting too predictable. The misleading ads for this album say that it features Brendan Perry from Dead Can Dance, and Katie McMahon from "Riverdance." Perry does play percussion on two tracks, and McMahon sings lead on three, but if you're looking for the Gothic pop of DCD or the exuberant Irish jigs of "Riverdance," you're going to be disappointed. --j. poet

5 out of 5 stars ASTLEYAN AS ANYTHING.......2002-01-10

If you like Virginia Astley you are bound to love this album as its possibly the greatest one she never made.Theres a link of sorts with Virginia as the entire album is dedicated to Caroline Lavelle who takes part.
This is an album I play a lot.I've had it on a Walkman, ringing through my ears.I've LIVED with it.
Maybe at some future stage this Algerian expatraite will coax Virginia out of retirement to put in an appearance on some future album, the ame way he apparantly did with the ex Passion Barbara Gogan.
Zazou is a Cult Artiste who will never find commercial fame yet will continue to make great music. You just have to be grateful for stuff like this, for record companies who will spend a fortune and know there will be little return
This is Forever Music that makes you feel good and I would say this is the Zazou you should hear first before exploring the other albums

5 out of 5 stars Sheer brilliance in the dark.......1999-06-29

Hector and the ladies go way beyond the traditional ethereal old and modern Irish religious Sean Nos of the likes of Noirin Ni Riain, who is justly thanked on this album "for paving the way". Nowhere the same, nowhere boring, nowhere conventional, but refreshing, surprising and renewing a very old tradition. Like a genuine Celtic tradition to mould an amalgam of the very best of foreign elements (Japanese!) with the strong potential of indigenous traditions to create a unique and succesful blend. A perfect album as such, in its sheer musical brilliancy but even with consideration to the tradition of numerical esoterism when putting its strongest track Amhran na Paise on position seven (!) out of a total of thirteen (!) Columcille himself would have approved! He who has ears, may he hear...

5 out of 5 stars Music to make moss grow, whisky flow and tired skin prickle........1999-02-06

This should surprise nobody. The man needed to set straight the dangerous Riverdance tendency which should not be the world's window on Irish culture. Lights in the Dark follows naturally the even more ethereal -- but perhaps more feral -- Les Nouvelles Polyphonies Corse (Philips 848515-2), a set of Corsican choral works with a little touch of John Cale. How can I find out what's happening next? Do I wait 'til Cale comes to Australia again, and ask him? Hector, talk to me!

5 out of 5 stars Distinto ?

5 out of 5 stars Hypnotically beautiful.......1998-10-13

An ethereal, dreamy collection of sacred Irish hymns - very different from Hector Zazou's other CDs, but equally mesmerising. The vocalists and arrangements are haunting. Not to be missed!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully understated drama.......2005-06-10

Despite a lack of big arias, Golem is a good opera. The singers in this production are very effective in conveying the inner tensions of their characters. Although there is little physical movement, the drama of Rabbi Judah Loeb confronting the monster he has created is intense.
The scenic cantata, Arald, is Bretan's masterpiece. It is a lyrical evocation of memory, despair, and resignation. Arald puts the listener through all of the emotional upheaval of Das Lied von der Erde in half of the time. This performance of Arald is as affecting as the best performances of Das Lied von der Erde that I have heard.

4 out of 5 stars More beautiful music than we'd any right to expect........2001-01-25

The Transylvanian composer Bretan had one of the grimmer lives of any notable composer - his wife's family were murdered in Auschwitz; his refusal in post-war Romania to become a Communist led to his silencing - but you wouldn't know it from either of these operas.

They are serious and solemn enough. 'Golem' takes the old story of a rampaging Frankenstein-type monster and turns it into a melancholy dialogue about life, science, creation, family. 'Arald', with its hero supplicating the Seer of the Underworld to resuscitate his dead love, forswears doomy Gothic in favour of more metaphysical musings.

From a dramatic point of view, both works are static. Musically, however, they are gloriously reminiscent of mid-period Verdi - bountifully melodic, rapturously sad - with an Eastern European flavour. The fact that an opera composer in the mid-20th century dared even write a TUNE is reason enough to rejoice.

4 out of 5 stars Two short beautiful, somber lyric operas........1999-05-07

"Golem" is a one-act opera about the legendary clay man created by the Rabbi of Prague. The poignant libretto is by the composer. The music is beautiful and lyric, but has no memorable tunes. Stylistically, it is a bit like Rimsky-Korsakoff's operatic writing. "Arald" is not really an opera but a scenic cantata. It tells of the despair of the khan of the Avars over the loss of his wife. The gloom of both text and music put me off at first. On second hearing, I loved it! It is more tuneful than "Das Lied von der Erde" and has none of the dissonance of Bartok's "Duke Bluebeard's Castle", but the mood is similar.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Profess Your Pain.......2003-10-18

First of all, I'm reviewing the Import I got from Japan and I don't know it this is the Japan Import or not. What can one say about this album?! It's a very angry and depressive album. The music is a thrashy music thats somewhat Melodic. The vocals are a mix of Queensryche and Judas Priest. The one thing about this band is that they try to make every album it's own thing, so if you are a fan of one of their albums, that doesn't mean your be a fan of another album of theirs. Now onto a review of each track: 1. Narcosynthesis - Heavy way to start the album. Very interesting lyrics about not following the crowd. I know its deeper than that, but its hard to explain. anyways... ....90%2. We Disintegrate - Very Neat track. The guitar's sound great, and gezz that Bass is so doomy! The vocals are very much Judas Priestish in this track at parts. The Chorus is so Melodic and beautiful. ...100% 3. Inside Four Walls - The heaviest thing on here! A song about laws that seem so wrong. Why is Murder and rape a lesser crime than drug use? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Well if you like a thrashy angry song about that subject, then this song is for you! ...95%4. Evolution 169 - A weird Slower, but ugly track! Very interesting song about life. ....95%5. River Dragon Has Come - A sad song about how we have no way to get out of being poor. The Flood shall come and we will drown. This song truly most can relate to. ...100% 6. Heart Collector - A slower song. The lyrics are interesting, but it sounds a tad bit like the same story on the last track. ...90% 7. Engines of Hate - Another Heavy song with a doomy/thrashy feel. It's about being a slave to this world. ....95% 8. Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel Cover) - I'll be honest, I would have never guessed this was a cover. But when the booklet didn't have the lyrics to this song, then that meant it was a cover. It's heavy and Doomy. ...90% 9. Insignificant - The sad song on this album. It's a soft Verse/heavy Chorus type of song. Here's the chorus: "and then one day you'll realize, just a speck in the spectrum, insignificant am I?, and then one day you'll realize, the beauty that breaks down, never learns the reason why" ....95%10. Believe in Nothing - Slower/softer track. And yes theres a Single for this song. But I personally don't find the track that interesting. It's like The Heart Collector" and it lack a twist or anything. ...85% 11. Dead Heart in a Dead World - Has a weird intro that sounds like an old recording, But fear not this song is not going to be soft for long! A Heavy Song with odd soft vocals at points, and then the chorus is like the Doomy ending to this album. Very interesting track! ...100% (Now if your interested in getting the japan import of this album. You get a paper box with the normal cd box inside and a sticker, you get these extra tracks on it. I however don't know if this import is the japan Import or not.)12. Love Bites (Judas Priest Cover) - This track very good, You can find this song also on a Judas Priest tribute album (the name of the tribute disc I don't remember), or on the "Believe in Nothing" Single. It's worth having. ....90% 13. All the Cowards Hide - A ok song. It 's sort of like something off of Dreaming Neon Black. It's however only a tad interesting. This song is also on the "Believe in Nothing" Single. ...85%14. Chances Three - This song is only 3 minutes long but so different and a tear jerker. It's a simple acoustic with some very moving music about growing up and growing old. The only song that I can think of by Nevermore that sounds anything like this song is "The Sorrowed Man" off of "In Memory". I think this song is only on the japan import, and it's truly a treat to the fans. ..100% 15. Next in Line (Video track) - Saddly my computer is unable to download this. Sorry. If you like this album, Also check out the following albums: Nevermore- The Politics of Ecstasy, Nevermore- Enemies of Reality, Nevermore- Nevermore, Judas Priest- Painkiller, Iced Earth- Horror Show, Halford- Resurrection, Nevermore- In Memory, Iced Earth- Something Wicked This Way Comes, and Nevermore- Dreaming Neon Black.
