For the first few albums of its career, Brazil's Sepultura was a better-than-average death metal band, but with the release of Chaos A.D., the group's true colors began to shine. In addition to focusing its rancor more deliberately, Sepultura began to flirt with tribal drumming and experimental guitar noises, elements that would later become trademarks for frontman Max Cavalera. In addition to creating torrents of volume, the band established a killer groove to propel its songs even during moments of sheer dissonance. The title track reveals Sepultura at its most caustic and aggressive, while "Kaiowas," with its tribal beats and acoustic guitar strums, exposes the band's more thought-provoking side. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars Chaos A.D. is a metal classic.......2007-02-27

This is one of the most unforgetable metal albums frigin' EVER!! The sound of Max's voice fits in perfectly with the music and the lyrics. This is by far Sepultura's best album (followed closely by Beneath The Remains and Arise tied for second). I love all of the songs, they are all creative. If I had to choose my least favorite song it would be the Refuse/Resist remix (titled Chaos B.C.) because it is just a version of Refuse/Resist (which is awesome by the way) with some samples. Chaos B.C. is a bonus track so I can see why Sepultura didn't put it on the oringinal recording. That is just a minor complaint though. I swear to god if you don't get this you are not a true METAL FAN.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Sepultura just trucks the planet.......2006-11-11

Chaos AD is simply a landmark in music history. This stuff is so good for so many different reasons and is just a remarkable artistic statement. I'm not sure I have ever heard something so completely unreal in terms of originality and execution.

Honestly, the riff at the end of Territory is just unfair and so sick its not funny. I thought they were gonna finally end that brain busting thrash monster and then they rip off one of the best riffs in history. Just down right unfair guys!

Propaganda is my favorite. That track is just sick.

What a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars NO MAN'S LAND, WHAT IS THIS [edited]?.......2006-07-29

Although I would prefer "Beneath the Remains" for Sep. beginners, I would say that "Chaos A.D." is their finest hour. Max's vocals are at their roughest and rawest on this disc IMHO, but somehow, they just don't stand out to me like they did on BtR. Not to say that his vocals are bad (infact, he's my favorite in the death/thrash metal scene along with Tom Araya). He's a great rhythm guitarist as well! Andreas's is just as good, with some of the best solos I have ever heard in a thrash/death metal band, especially on "Refuse/Resist!" Paulo's is an awesome bassist, and guess what? YOU CAN HEAR THEM!!! Igor (who I heard left the band not too long ago [then again, with Derrick running the show, who could blame him?]) is an amazing drummer, and practically my 2nd favorite part of the band (Max is #1). He could rip that good-for-nothing Lars Ulrich a new one!

Are you kidding me?

Overall, get this if you want the real thing! Don't even bother with any of that tripe that the Derrick-era Sepultura releases. Also get "Beneath the Remains," "Arise," "Roots," (yes, I liked that one, STFU!), and maybe "Against" if you're one of the "true" Sepultura fans like I am (even though I don't like it that much).

3 out of 5 stars 3 & 1/2 stars.......2006-07-25

I really like this album. Probably the most notable thing here is Sepultura's creative use of rhythms. There is a fine balance between heavy, compelling grooves, and corny "brootal breakdowns." The 1993 release date probably helps this a bit. Coming out the same year as Earth Crisis's "firestorm" and before Hatebreed, this was before the approach of chugging away on open D/C minor chords while drums play the simplest beat possible had been done to death by every metalcore act under the sun. Here the rhythyms are slowed down from typical thrash, but there are still enough interesting elements in the drumming (and other instruments) to keep the album enjoyable and fresh after 10 or 15 plays. The vocals are pretty goofy, but what do you expect, it's metal. Plus it's a Brazilian singing in English. I respect that. Overall, I'd recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars I just can't get enough of this CD.......2006-07-21

This CD is Thrash/Death Metal with prog and tribal influences, and a touch of hardcore. This isn't as technical as Arise, but it's still complex. The use of tribal instruments are very innovative. Max's vocals are angry and powerful, and his rhythm guitar is quite impressive. The guitarwork is very cool, with lots of killer riffs and solos. The bass is hearable, and the drumming has a brazilian touch to it. Hilights are Refuse/Resist, Propaganda, and Territory. If you like metal, this won't dissapoint.

Holy countercultural confluence! For the cause of fundraising for the defense of a trio of legally bound Arkansas headbangers--one of whom is currently on death row on the basis of hearsay testimony--Henry Rollins has resurrected the sacrosanct songs of his legendary former Los Angeles hardcore band Black Flag. Much as he first joined the popular Flag by jumping on stage and grabbing the microphone, Rollins here assigns lead vocals to a bewildering array of guests, including Iggy Pop, Dean Ween, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Tom Araya of Slayer, Queens of the Stone Age, and Ice T. The Rollins Band convincingly serves as caustic backing band throughout. Protest music godfather Chuck D. of Public Enemy appears as well, though simply to introduce the album. Many of the singers, whether inspired by the cause itself or the muscular caliber of Black Flag's music, deliver the rebellious message with heartfelt intensity. Motorhead leader Lemmy's ripping version of "Thirsty and Miserable" is a stunning highlight, as is Hank Williams III's psychotic "No Values." Former Flag singers Keith Morris and Chuck Dukowski bring their veteran intensity, and Rollins himself shouts "My War," "TV Party," "Black Coffee," "Annihilate This Week," "Slip It In," and the title track. (Flag guitarist-lyricist Greg Ginn is notably absent, though his trademark clear Lucite guitar joins the West Memphis Three defendants on the cover artwork.) The participating musicians' anger and frustration over the West Memphis Three case, which has been detailed in HBO's Paradise Lost documentaries, is well matched with the giant fury of this band. --Ian Christe

4 out of 5 stars Good Music For A Bad Cause.......2007-03-07

Rise Above: 24 Black Flag Songs to Benefit the West Memphis Three is a case of good music being used to support a bad cause. The music, contributed by the likes of Henry Rollins and other leading musicians is pretty good on the whole. However, there is quite a bit of pro-West Memphis 3 stuff on this CD and all of the profits from sales of this CD goes to help legal efforts on behalf of the WM 3.

This would be a good thing if there was good reason to believe that the WM 3 really were framed for a crime that they commit. Problem is the pro-WM 3 material on this CD contains many factual errors and fails to make a persuasive case to believe in the innocence of the WM 3.

If you want to listen to this good music, then the thing to do is to look for it at your local public library, secondhand music shop or borrow it from a friend. Don't let your good money go to support a bad cause like the West Memphis 3.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs, Great Cause!.......2007-02-16

Black Flags is undeniably one of the greatest punk bands ever and it is great to hear artists sush as Hank Williams III pay tribute to this great band. Plus it gives attention to a great injustice. Help support the West Memphis 3!

5 out of 5 stars Truth or complacency? The choice is yours........2005-01-23

Those who will enjoy this disc are people who have both an understanding of great music and a respect for the law. Those who do not care about either probably will not care for this. Certainly this is for fans of Black Flag, Henry Rollins, and all the artists compiled here. (Ryan Adams contributes a great version of "Nervous Breakdown" and Hank III does "No Values," which is simply incredible.)

This is not for fans of ignorance or complacency in any of its forms. Certainly NOT for fans who think Henry Rollins is just trying to "free convicted murderers." And certainly NOT for fans who think that people who read Stephen King books are all Satanic killers.

Watch the "Paradise Lost" HBO documentaries, read "Devil's Knot" and "Blood of Innocents" and form educated opinions. Don't impugn Rollins or any of these musicians for having higher standards for OUR legal system and wanting to make sure we have the truth. When three people are convicted on hearsay and circumstantial evidence and one is sentenced to death, you can expect people from all over the country to take notice and want to get involved, because some of us still believe in justice and the separation of church and state. Anything less is un-American.

This is Henry Rollins' attempt to raise money for the truth, whatever it may be. Rollins told one victim's family as much. If the WM3 are proven guilty, at least we will have more to rely on than hearsay and Satanic Panic (you know, like actual, concrete evidence, which has been absent from this case since the start). The phrase "innocent until proven guilty" simply does not apply to this case. The prosecution proved nothing, except that West Memphis, Arkansas is a place free-thinking people probably shouldn't visit. Pardon the rest of America for thinking Metallica CDs aren't quite enough to prove someone is a murderer.

This is a great effort on the part of all the musicians involved, and it proves that ignorance still has opposition in America.

5 out of 5 stars English as a second language for Americans.......2004-05-31

(...) The WM3 were convicted of the crimes. This is true. They were convicted based on hearsay and circumstantial evidence, not to mention a healthy dose of christian (ugh) fundamentalism. The truth is out there, but the ignorant sit in their churches and ignore it because it is easier to do.

This a compact disc full of MUSIC, however, and that is the real point here. You can't get much better than this with Henry Rollins being joined by Black Flag alums like Chuck Dukowski and Keith Morris, as well as Hank Williams III (the best REAL country musician working today), Lemmy from Motorhead, Exene from X, Ryan Adams, Tom from Slayer, Nick from Mondo Generator, and plenty more. The music is all provided by Mother Superior, a terriffic caustic rock trio with plenty of CDs of their own out there. They are best known as the Rollins Band, mach II, of course. They became his backing band a few years ago, although this is no longer the case. Henry is set to reveal a new band soon. They tear it up here, and the guitar sound is nearly perfect since the Dan Armstrong guitar donated to the cause was used for the recording, getting close to that classic Greg Ginn sound.

Black Flag are one of the ten most important bands in the history of music, and these songs should not be missed. Check this disc out, then check out some of the original releases for a real lesson in rock and roll.

And check out the Paradise Lost films for a lesson in how easily the US court system can break down when it is allowed to be placed in the hands of ignorant rednecks who don't understand that church and state are required BY LAW to remain separate and distinct.

If the victims in this case were my family, I would want the real killer or killers to be found. I would not want to find the nearest scapegoat and ruin that person (or in this case persons) life. Punishing scapegoats is what the nazis did, isn't it?

5 out of 5 stars a testament to the surviving power of music.......2003-12-24

I had never heard of the west memphis three case until this benifit CD came out. It wasn't until recently that I bought the CD, and ever since I've purchased it, I've been blown away by the intensity and quality. I think it's a testament to the still surviving power of music, and especially Black Flag style punk rock that so much talent has come together for such a controversial but noble cause. If you're a Black Flag, Rollins Band, Henry Rollins, etc., fan, buy this CD. If you're not a rock fan, at least check out the case, or at least how it's laid out by the CD insert. Without voices like Rollins, there will never be hope for justice in America.

5 out of 5 stars Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.
