First thing I must say is that Burzum is THE only black metal I've listened to and liked.

While most of my friends don't like Varg's vocals, one won't even listen to the instrumentals that he likes because of it. I feel they add to the over-all atmosphere of this album.

A while back, all I use to listen to was metal (Not metalcore and nu-metal, and while I'm at this, nu-metal is NOT metal) and I liked Burzum back then, too.

While my tastes in music have changed quite a bit (I went from loving metal, to just liking it and LOVING j-rock) I still quite enjoy Burzum. If you like metal, or liked metal, I'd recommend this in a heartbeat.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Raw Black Metal You Will Ever Hear........2006-11-23

While I do not think this batch of tunes from Varg are as good as Det Som Engang Var, I do think it's the most raw sounding Black Metal ever made. You have to be in the right mood to listen to this dark recording. You're not in a bad mood, but you aren't in a good one either: this is the perfect time to listen to any early Burzum, especially this one. War sounds like a horde of mad Black Metal assassins, stomping through a dark countryside, leaving every church a heap of ash and ruin. There are a lot of Black Metal bands who churn out 'cold' recordings, but none have ever managed to create a coldness on the level of a Burzum CD. If there is another to tie, it would only be early Mayhem and Darkthrone. So, you don't have to like Varg or what he stands for (personally, I think he was just defending himself), but you do have to have this recording in your Black Metal collection or it will be incomplete.

I'm sure if you're fortunate enough to be reading this, you know about the bad choices Varg has made in his life. I have to admit, that's what lured me into actually buying this. I was curious to see if the contraversy was all that attracted people and if it was what caused them to praise Varg's albums. After listening to this for the first time, many years ago, it's safe to say that I was immediately amazed with the music. The soundscapes he creates are magnificently dark and torturous. He plays every instrument on this album, so it's safe to say that all of this music comes from one man's incredible vision. This album, while not as cohesive as "Det Som Engang Var", still remains as my favorite Burzum recording. "My Journey To The Stars" is absolutely beautiful. This man is a musical genius. He paints pictures that take you to shadowy realms you never thought existed. For those of you that find beauty in darkness, take a look at the album cover. Now, to me it is a beautiful picture, but if you don't think so, then maybe it's not for you. If you do, however, perhaps you've come to the right place, because that is the kind of vision that this music gives you. If you've heard the history and are wondering what the music of a tortured artist sounds like, then this is highly recommended. It can be an extremely rewarding experience.

4 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-07-11

I have listened to lots of black metal bands that talk about death gore and lots of other necro subjects and it doesnt really bother me.But when it comes to burzum I cant feel anything but dread, hate, and spite from burzum.I truly feel demansy and lunacy in a very subtle way. Most metal albums help people release anger but this guy does the opposite. He tries to poison your mind your soul your body, there is an undeniable presence in this cd.It may have something to do with the fact that this guy in real life is a lunatic. So this is really the work of not just any band but of a madman.the production on this cd is standard not good not bad the drums have a raw sound to them,The guitars are great they have a very ghoulish sound to them.I guess my favorite songs on this album are feeble screams from a forest unknown and A lost forgotten sad spirit but there are lots of great songs on this cd.Overall I do recommend this cd to anyone interested in the more serious parts of black metal I highly recommend this album.Oh yeah and I am not under thirteen

Director Jonathan Glazer's supernatural mystery revolves around a NYC woman (Golden Globe nominated Nicole Kidman) who becomes obsessed with the young boy who claims to be the reincarnation of her dead husband. French composer Alexandre Desplat imbues the tale with a sophisticated orchestral score that conjures an aura of magic and mystery, often fusing the minimalist rhythms of Reich and Glass and the impressionistic classicism of fellow countrymen Ravel and Debussy with deceptive grace. The cues here brood and pulse with haunting subtlety, seasoned by fleeting waltzes and solo piano passages that recall the composer's previous fine work on The Luzhin Defence. Desplat's masterful music here (honored with nods from both the Venice Film Festival and Online Critics Society) is on a par with his Golden Globe-nominated Girl With a Pearl Earring, another elegant, post-modernist musical gem from one of filmdom's most underrated musical talents. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

"Birth", a dramatic mystery set in NY's Upper East Side, stars Nicole Kidman as Anna, a young widow who is finally getting on with her life after the death of her husband Sean. Now engaged to be married, she meets a ten year-old boy who tells her he is Sean reincarnated. Though his story is both unsettling and absurd, Anna can't get the boy out of her mind. Also stars Lauren Bacall, Danny Huston, and Anne Heche. Directed by Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast). Score composed by Alexandre Desplat (2003 Golden Globe Nominee for "Girl With A Pearl Earring").

3 out of 5 stars exciting & dark.......2006-11-10

This score is moving-exciting and dark but there are parts especially into Rendevous that become very repetitious and loud almost to the point of being painful.

My favorite parts are the Prologue-The Engagement and the end selection The Waltz. I ordered it because I had seen the movie and was captivated with the soundtrack- I could not get the music out of my head and wanted to own the CD so that when I am in the mood-I could listen.

5 out of 5 stars Oddly enough ..........2006-02-24

Oddly enough I had an interest in this Score about 6 months ago when Amazon displayed that "others who bought this also bought this" blurb. I checked it out but wasn't interested enough at the time to purchase it. Then last December I watched The Door in the Floor and became a bit entranced with the score. One of my better purchases this year to date.

5 out of 5 stars Birth: the soundtrack.......2005-08-12

The movie was great and captivating. The music spoke when there was no dialog.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Soundtrack.......2005-08-11

This is one of the finest soundtracks in recent years. The entire album plays as a harmonious whole and is haunting and hypnotic. It is beautiful music that stands on its own whether you have seen the movie or not. It is at once minimalist like a Philip Glass piece and lush in places in the classical music sense. It goes back and forth between these two genres in a very satisfying way.
I was a bit perplexed by the movie and wasn't sure if I liked it or not but this sountrack is a gem.

4 out of 5 stars dark, dreamy, amazing.......2005-07-19

Music for the small hours of the night, grabs you to another world, enchanting and powerful.
