Album Description

You gotta believe...that's the message from Antigone Rising-five women whose Lava debut, From the Ground Up hits that place in your heart that Springsteen, U2, Aerosmith, and the greatest of the great bands reached in their young and hungry days. You know how rare this is. It's not just about writing terrific songs and playing them with a passion kindled through hundreds of nights in tiny, packed clubs until it's ready to blow through the roof and into the sky for the whole world to hear. Though, of course, Antigone Rising have done that.

5 out of 5 stars WOW........2006-09-05

I worked at Starbucks and we played this CD, among others, non-stop and I've yet to grow tired of it. I've purchased their "From The Ground Up" and I am immensely satisfied. Every song is really good, though one in particular doesn't rub me right. "She Lived Here" is kinda weird to me, but that doesn't make it a horrible song. It's just one I tend to skip as I listen to the CD. *shrug* I love this album and I don't think enough people know about it.

2 out of 5 stars Shouldn't Have Been Me.......2006-08-21

My mistake. I had only heard "Should've Been The One" which I thought sounded very good. That, however, was the only song produced in the studio and unfortunately the only song I liked enough to justify the purchase. The rest of the songs are live, apparently recorded at a small venue, if you can judge by the applause. Like I said...my fault. Not saying any of the songs are bad. Maybe more of them will grow on me. Just not what I expected. Moral: it pays to listen to most of a CD before you buy it.(duh) You never know what you're gonna get.

5 out of 5 stars Completely Satisfied.......2006-08-03

I purchased a "used" but never opened CD from this seller and I am completely satisfied with my purchase. The CD came to me still in the shrink wrap and it plays like a brand new CD. I would definately purchase from this seller again!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-07-14

This is the best girl group, if not the best group going today. They produce hit after hit. The only challenge as far as listening to AR is to find a song that you do NOT like.

5 out of 5 stars Worth making room for. .......2007-07-23

Parsifal is a fantastic opera with mood, layers of tone and symbolic references to spare. Any recording of this epic opera is worth listening to. In the case of the newest DG release with Placido Domingo in the title role and Christian Thielemann conducting, this combination is enough to make it worth adding to your CD library. This live recording is not only a testimony to the professionalism of the two individuals listed above but to the entire cast, starting with the Placido Domingo who is terrific and who, once again, proves his place in opera history as our most versatile and gifted tenor. Even as late as the middle of Act III Mr. Domingo continues to sound strong and commanding in the role (again this is a live recording). He owns the role and, based on recent Parsifal's without him, I am not sure there is anybody around who is truly ready to take over (Hang in there Placido and sorry Ben). Christian Thielemann's reading of the score is wonderful, no big departures here, not too fast and not too slow but a well-balanced tempo throughout the entire recording. Where he excels is in the softer, tender moments of Act III; the Good Friday music specifically. Parsifal is a tone poem with multi-layered orchestral parts that seem to just illuminate and overlap while developing Wagner's most gifted talent. Waltraud Meier delivers her typical wonderful rendering of Kundry - no easy task, with all the characteristics needed: crazy in Act I, a seductress in Act II, and mute in Act III (though she never leaves the stage). Her Act II encounter with Parsifal was wonderful and convincing; her entrance and announcing of Parsifal draws one in and sets up the remainder of the Act. Franz-Josef Selig's Gurnemanz was the only area where I took issue. I love the role of Gurnemanz and believe he carries some of the most important and, in some cases, beautiful singing in the opera; the voice must be just right. Here, I found the dramatic weight missing. By Act III I warmed up to his sound and `lyrical' rendition of the role but still wanted something deeper and with more command. All other roles, as well as the chorus, were exceptional. Be advised: this is a live recording so you will occasionally here stage noise, mostly swords clanking. As I mentioned this is a wonderful opera and this new release is worth making room for in your collection. [JG] A review from OperaOnline.us.

4 out of 5 stars Curiously Flat.......2007-03-30

I am listening to this one on XM radio over the internet. The performance is well sung and the orchestra sounds great, with wide and expansive sound. Domingo sounds like, well, Domingo, but Waltraut Meier as Kundry sounds very nasal. The other men sound fine.

But somehow, there is no passion in this performance. It moves along at the same methodical rate from beginning to end, with no tension in the dramatic moments, and no mystery in the spiritual ones.

Perfectly fine, but perfectly ordinary.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-08

I have to admit that I am pretty poor at writing reviews but was forced to by the simple lack of them for this recording. So please, don't expect a prose piece consisting of any deep or insightful analysis of this recording - such a thing is beyond someone who believes that music - especially Wagner's music - must be experienced and cannot be described in prose.

And so to the recording; simply this is an amazing interpretation of Parsifal and Thielemann is simply one of of Wagner's greatest interpreters. Heavy praise perhaps but I often feel while listening to his Wagner that this is how Furtwangler would have sounded given the recording mechanisms of the 21st century.

Parsifal is perhaps interpreted as Wagner's most directly "spiritual" works - infusing his interested in Christianity, Buddhism, the neopaganism of his time and - his version - of Schopenhauerian philosophy (this is Wagner after all and of course he felt that he could improve on Schopenhauer's thought. I often wonder what Schopenhauer's response would have been if Wagner had ever actually sent him the intended letter explaining how much he admired Schopenhauer's philosophy but that it could be improved if he only...?)and indeed, this is how the best Wagnerian interpretors perform it. However, the truth is that - in my opinion - it is normally T&S, as normally performed, that seems to project whatever feelings of "spiritually" or "transcendence" Wagner intended much more then Parsifal. However, here at last we have a Parsifal that manages to lift the listener to those heavy states that transcend the normal, everyday realm of existence.

This recording is incredible "cheap", for goodness sake, buy it and experience - honest Guv'.

5 out of 5 stars Radiant performance amid the clatter of stage noise.......2006-08-03

This new Parsial is a truly visionary performance by Christian Thielemann who never fails to amaze. His reading is both pointillist in his illumination of score's mosaic of tone colors and, at the same time, contrapuntally aware of the music's complex layers. The set's only drawback is the unusual amount of stage noise that not only has been allowed to exist, but has been weirdly amplified rather than digitally squelched. Perhaps DG's engineers wanted an "Amfortas Effect" by lancing this ethereal performance with a shaft of the palpably metallic. What are those sounds? (on-stage swords?, an hare Krishna procession? ). For Parsifal fans like me, who love to bathe in the grandeur of the bell-brass-timpani processions of Act I, the shock of hearing "kling soars," like so many pieces of fallen silverware, is irritating enough to retire the entire set on a first hearing. I've since gotten over this distraction, but it has taken time and patience. As to the singers, this set offers an unconventional package. Placido Domingo, in spite of his odd accent, is a heartfelt and satisfying Parsifal. Throughout the four hours, the other singers give a fresh perspective to the expected role casting. One never finds Franz-Josef Selig's Gurnemanz tedious or terminally vatic. His varied and athletic voice has a light upper register and an affectingly rich lower one. Waltraud Meier's Kundry is also full of surprises. Unexpected tenderness, and, turning on a dime, hysteria. In all, one never thinks of this Parsifal as the sanctimonious German Easter Parade that one sometimes hears. Thielemann effectively revitalizes this work without sacrificing an ounce of it's rich beauty. Keep this set with your Knappertsbusch and your Boulez.

5 out of 5 stars Great conductor and star........2006-06-24

Beautiful, just like the same conductor's Tristan. Keep 'em coming DG. Want to hear Thielemann in Lohengrin, Tannhauser, the Dutchman etc. And I know it's expensive but some in the studio would be nice too.

I dont know how to explain it because I am still listening to it for the first time and Im speechless. Its that good. You should buy it now regardless of all of these reviewes. The intro alons is awesome and the riffs are crazy. The drumming also sticks out to me. Its really catchy. If you are any type of metal head being it harcore, death metal, numetal...check this out. Some say its hard core but i dont think so. Its more death metal type stuff to me but not srait death metal. Just go buy it now and see for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Good band, Good album.......2006-05-17

Antigone was my first Heaven Shall Burn album that I bought, and I really like it. HSB remind me alot of At The Gates, Soilwork, and In Flames all in one kick ass band. This album is a pure straight up no nonsense, in your face headbanging assault to your senses, with some melody added into the mix which is a good thing. Brutal screaming vocals, crushing guitar riffs, head rattling double bass drumming, what more do you need. The album starts off with a nice piano intro called "Echoes", but don't be fooled however, because when you hear the opening riffs in track two "The Weapon They Fear" (my favorite song on here), you'll be raising those horns and headbanging like crazy. I also learned that song was about a Chilean singer who was killed the seventies because of the power of his songs. Other songs that I find very addicting on here include "Architects of the Apocalypse", "Bleeding to Death", "The Only Truth", "Tree of Freedom", and "Voice of the Voiceless" which are good solid headbangers as well. Their covers of Disembodied's "Dislocation" and Hate Squad's "Not My God" which are included on here kick ass as well. There are a couple outros one here ("Risandi Von", and "Deyjandi Von") but they don't take away the brutality and aggression on this album. Marcus Bischoff's screaming vocals are awesome and bone chilling throughout. Maik Weichert and Patrick Schleitzer's dual guitar riffs crush and demolish throughout, Eric's bass is pretty good, and Matthias's double bass drumming is top-notch. So anyways if you're a fan of Lamb Of God, At The Gates, God Forbid, Soilwork, and In Flames, you'll like Heaven Shall Burn. Get this album now!!

4 out of 5 stars HSB... Heavy Systematic Brutality!!.......2006-04-18

The Weapon They Fear is the best metal song i have ever heard... quite simply. and almost single-handedly gets this album a five starc rating, but like most people are saying this album is a bit repetitive in the mid section... the outros are brilliant and attempt to break up the repetition. tracks 3,4,5,6,7,9 and 10 are very similar but since HSB has a unique sound i like them all as they are all similarly catchy in brutality... track 11, The Dream Is Dead, has a slightly different chorus which makes it a fairly unique track in the context of the entire album. the bonus tracks arent all that special but are also very brutal... everything about this album is brutal really except for the outros which give a huge contrast to the rest of the album. Risandi Von (outro), track 8 is unbelievably beautiful.. and im not the kind of person who uses the word beautiful very often.. this outro is very moving and even though its only 1:31, it is a memorable addition to this album... all in all, despite its repitition, this is a great unique and yes BRUTAL album...

4 out of 5 stars Solid, but not as good as everyone says.......2006-02-07

This cd, despite what people are saying, is good, not great. Don't get me wrong, i'm a huge fan of the band, but the cd doesn't necissarily achieve the band's full potential. "The Weapon They Fear" is the absolute best song on this cd. Followed by "Not My God". A great first song and great ending song, but the rest of the cd is just average.

Everything in the middle, aside from the two outros, is very similar. They don't vary much from the first song, actually downgrading on the sound. The voice is great, though the distortion on it can sometimes be a little overbearing. Besides the two afformentioned songs, nothing on this cd really jumps out at you saying "listen to me more and more". Unlike bands like Chimaira, or Devil Driver, in which each song on their latest cd's scream to be heard over and over.

Overall, a good cd, but could be way better. I am hoping they will reach their full potential on their next album.

1 out of 5 stars PETAcore. Hahaha, two paragraphs are adequate........2006-02-06

I'll make this short, because I don't want anyone to waste too much time thinking about this band. Lately, metalcore's been been taking an unfortunate rise in popularity. Every day it seems a new "core" band with leftover At The Gates riffs has been forcing its way onto our "metal" shelves, and sucking the capitol out of the burning pockets of those trying to escape the bounds of the mainstream. Just another faceless genre that will be forgotten in five years. Let it be known that the intimidatingly named "Heaven Shall Burn" is among these ranks.

I'm sorely disappointed no one here at Amazon has yet given this CD a negative review. It's almost hard to critisize, because it's so unbelievably generic and nondescript on every conceivable level. Hilariously non-threatening, whiney shrieks. Tepid Gothenburg styled sub-riffs. A bunch of rich guys who fancy themselves advocates of animal liberation, intending to appeal to teens who know nothing about the perversion of human rights in other countries, shaping their fundamentalist pseudo-"rebellious" views around PETA propaganda. All the asinine metalcore stereotypes are here. If you're still not convinced, keep this in mind: I (literally) burned my copy, and I still have a Mudvayne record stashed away somewhere I've yet to destroy. Avoid. Annihilate. Forget.

Great harmonies, great lead vocals, but most of all it simply fills up your soul, I can't say why, it just does, to me that's what great music is all about. No need to intellectualize just sit back and enjoy their gifts.

2 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding.......2005-08-30

One reviewer compared them to Springsteen or U2 in thier "early, hungry days" (which moved me to post my own review). What??? How about the more realistic comparison to Wilson Phillips, Dixie Chicks, or She-Daisy. These are talented women, they're cute (so they'll do the video circuit well), and they have nice harmonies - like a million other bands! They're not rare, or unique, or innovative. They play nice songs nicely.

I wanted to like them, really. I'm always looking for musicians who offer something unique (try Ilse DeLange if you like country - she's Dutch). But they're just what you'd expect from Starbucks - simple, mainstream performances that make for nice background music. And thier melodies are not at all memorable or interesting.

So they'll have a following, and do some gigs, but they won't have any impact on the music world. You might like thier CD - like the other gal-bands they have nice vocals and are very listenable. But they're easily replaced with the next "country" band that does the same.

Product was exactly as described. Shipping was superfast. I would buy from again.

5 out of 5 stars Stealth hits with broad appeal.......2005-07-02

Like others I got turned on to it from the Starbucks connection; whatever song they had on grabbed me as I walked in the door and I had to ask "who IS that?" Bought the CD. (Last time that instant attraction happened to me, other than my sweetie, was the Hear Music mix volume that is all the road music, the one with "Babylon" and Emmie Lou Harris on it.)

Anyway, first listen at home of Antigone Rising, I wasn't so sure for a moment. Sounded a bit rough from the live recording. But played it again right after and the rhythms, the voices, the tunes and the lyrics just clicked all at once. This group can sound country or alternative or womyn and the songs ALL SAY something meaningful. I felt their New York Village bar vibe right along with the twang. Cassidy has a unique nuanced voice and the instrumental lines are classy. So I've played it regularly in the car ever since. Today I transported with me my two grandaughters ages 3 and 6, and they were singing along with it and humming and clapping their hands. The little one yelled and clapped with the audience at the end of the CD, too. Cute and a good sign that this phenom group has VERY broad appeal. I'm ordering it for my sister, just divorced. She needs to hear "I am a Diamond." Maybe you do, too.

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous Females Rock!.......2005-07-01

I walked past this cd several times at my local Starbucks before actually purchasing it a week ago. Now it's the only thing I'm listening to in my car. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. My favorite songs are include "Don't Look Back", "Michael". My least favorite is "Happy Home." I would not describe them as country at all. These girls are all about rock with amazing harmonies and melodies. I love musicians that write their own material and this band delivers!

Composed shortly following the 1970 Kent State massacres, Frederic Rzewski's Jefferson sets the opening of the Declaration of Independence in the fashion of an incantatory cantus firmus. The relentless, metrically shifting piano writing makes a fascinating foil to the text's sober, lofty sentiments. Rzewski's 53-minute setting of Brecht's 189 line poem "The Antigone Legend" (sung in Judith Malina's English translation) covers wider, more turbulent ground. Piano and voice weave in and out of each other, barely pausing for air. While Carol Plantamura lacks lightness and agility, the soprano compensates with forthright delivery, clear diction, and impeccable pitch. Labeling pianist Rzewski as an accompanist is like calling a nuclear reactor an extension cord. --Jed Distler

jefferson was a revelation for me. the piano line starts off slow, disjointed, then he begins filling in missing notes. when you think the line is full, still more notes creep in until the piano is singing on its own. like a flower that keeps opening and there are always more petals inside. after climax notes fall out unnoticably and the tune trickles off.

not all roses: it would be nice if the singer were faded down in the mix - the vocals are dreary.

antigone missed me completely - ugly brain music, not fun or particularly moving. buy this for the first sublime track only.

In volume 13 of this magnificent series of Schubert songs, Thomas Hampson played a supporting role to soprano Marie McLaughlin's recital. Here the roles are reversed: Hampson takes center stage, and McLaughlin assists, this time in a program of poetry largely by Mayrhofer, and concerned almost exclusively with the theme of ancient Greece. As always, the variety and abundance of Schubert's inspiration is astounding, and Graham Johnson's notes make very interesting reading. --David Hurwitz

    5 out of 5 stars Spectrally fascinating.......2004-05-18

Some voices possess such amazingly distinctive character and style! Brigitte Fassbaender is definitely one such voice. Her haunting performance of Mussorgsky's "Songs and Dances of Death" had set me on a journey of discovery. The peerless quality that Ms. Fassbaender has for depicting the darker side of beauty has been consistently delivered. Her Brangane, alongside the achingly superlative Margaret Price's Isolde, is taut with emotion and redolent with beauty. It must therefore have been cold logic or supernatural omen that led me to discover that both these enchanting singers each have a programme of lieder in the Hyperion Schubert Edition. Dame Price's programme of songs is based on the theme of night whereas Ms. Fassbaender's is centred in the theme of death.

Dame Price and Ms. Fassbaender both share an alluring vocal quality: their voices are consistently sweet and rich (respectively...though BOTH are ravishingly beautiful) but interspersed with moments of celestial purity. Take track 12 here "Lied des Orpheus". Listen to the change in colouration where she sings the words "Klage" in the first line of the 5th verse. Or again in track 14 where, after introducing her menacing reference to the cold north, she then steals your very soul with the word "tragen" in the 5th verse. Listen to Dame Price's CD and you will find a similar appeal.

Graham Johnson's accompaniment is not only beautifully played but perfectly complements his singer. His sense of control is clearly well-studied but not artificial in the least. There is a natural feel. The sound quality is pristine and the very slight echo in the acoustics adds to the proper "graveyard" feel of the work (see the picture on the cover...very pensive!).

Finally, let me just say (with GREAT emphasis) that despite all this talk of death, this is a performance that will hold your rapt attention. A tried and proven stunner. We are experiencing the age of one who will be regarded as a great legend in the future. For me, she has already achieved that status. I highly recommend this disc, together with Dame Margaret Price's sealed performance of nocturnal bliss!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and Convincing.......2002-10-20

What stands out in Fassbaender's singing is the absolute authenticity of her performance. So many Lieder singers are concerned with their tone and other factors extraneous to the authentic identification with their character. On this album Fassbaender totally identifies with her characters and lets them speak. Her singing is powerful and flawless. The outstanding songs on this album are Lied des Orpheus, a song I hadn't been familiar with previously. The story is very moving and Fassbaender renders them absolutely convincingly. Das Zugenlocklein is another new song for me. Beautifully sung and played. As for Der Tod und das Madchen I have heard Fischer-Dieskau's version previously and his rendering cannot be surpassed. Overall, this is a fabulous album and I cannot recommend it more highly.

5 out of 5 stars Very Jumpy Young Schubert.......2001-12-03

There has been a lot of unfair things said about Adrian Thompson for this CD, and at first listen, that may appear justified; however one need only to look at the "D" numbers, which attempt to put Schubert's song in chronological order, to realize that these are very early Schubert songs, and although they are enjoyable, one can sense that he has not quite mastered the range of the tenor voice (in the very first song, the voice is pushed to almost comical extremes as the distance between high and low seems quite unreasonable). It is this same quality of theses songs that makes Thompson's high, youthful sounding tenor so appropriate for this recording.

Also, enjoy the Don Gayseros trio and look for the "Schubert Boogie" in the last track. It's quite starteling.

**This review is for Volume 12, despite it somehow appearing under a Volume 11**

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific, dark.......2001-02-25

Those looking for the darker side of Schubert will find it here. My favorite of the series (along with Margaret Price).
