While Judas Priest's first three Columbia albums displayed a band that seemed musically restless and a bit wary of becoming just another rock caricature, their first official live album offers up a strong distillation of the musical sense that informed those records (along with earlier material from Sad Wings of Destiny) and is a testament to their KK Dowling/Glen Tipton fueled twin-guitar fury. The fact that vocalist Rob Halford's tracks (allegedly damaged in the recording process) were later replaced in the studio has long been a bone of contention to purists (though hardly an unusual practice in the industry), but fresh ears may find the "problem" actually resulted in a better-sounding record. More gratifying, the original album's manic sensibility has been amped even further by the inclusion of four key live, previously unreleased bonus tracks--"Rock Forever," "Delivering the Goods," "Hell Bent for Leather," and "Starbreaker." This digitally remastered edition also features new notes by the band and expanded artwork. Good God......pluck me!.......2007-05-18

In 1979, there was no band heavier than Judas Priest! Motorhead and AC/DC were worthy contenders, but only Lemmy's boys came close to ripping your head off like Priest at the end of the '70's. A live testament is usually a metal bands claim to faim and the boys produced a whopper in 'Unleashed in the East' in October of said year. In many ways, this record was the ultimate greatest hits package as classics from 'Sad Wings' ran alongside the best of their Columbia Records years to date. "Sinner" is long, gothic and majestic, possibly KK Downing's best moment on record. "Exciter" roars out of the gates and "The Ripper" is a full frontal assault on the senses. "Green Manalishi" was a Peter Green's Mac blues tune but with added metallic power and here it blows away both the Mac's and Priest's own studio version. "Tyrant" was a fantastic way to end the original album but my one quibble would be that with all of the classics from 'Sad Wings' (cept for "Ripper" which is flawless)and especially "Victim of Changes" (my all-time favorite by Priest!), the tempo is too fast. I appreciate the studio cuts more which had a classic Sabbathesque feel, but again it is a minor quibble. Also, one song from 'Stained Class', a album many consider to be the Metal Gods finest hour in the studio, is not enough. Bonus cuts are for once in this terrible remasters series (with the bonus songs that is) an absolute must as each song is special and perfectly chosen (special nod to "Delivering the Goods" and of course "Hell Bent for Leather", to of my all timers). As to what ever doctoring the band did to this record before release....who gives a crap! Mention any great live record of the last thirty plus years and chances are they have significant overdubs! Halford rerecorded his vocals? God bless him! That what makes Priest so great and on a winter night in Japan, they melted some faces!

A Masterful & Influential Piece of Live Power.......2007-04-03

Easily the most influential and essential live metal album ever, this masterpiece was recorded on February 10th & February 15th , 1979 (the day and year I was born) in front of a energetic Japanese audience. Some controversy exists as to whether this is a true live recording or not. Personally, I don't care. It has a great song selection (although tracks from Stained Class are, unfortunately, limited to only "Exciter") and great sound. A hell of a good introduction to the Priest. The 2001 remaster features four live tracks from the same shows that were not released on the original album.

A Must For Judas Priest Fans.......2007-01-28

I already owned or taped all of Judas Priest's studio albums when this came out, questioning its necessity, but the recording technology of this album was immensely improved over the sound quality of the earlier albums. I didn't know until recently that some tracks were redone in the studio, which might partly explain why the album sounds so crisp, but Judas Priest was also at their peak musically at this time, 1979, so redoing any songs and having them sound better would make sense. I would recommend this album over JP's three first studio albums, Rocka Rolla, Sad Wings of Destiny, and Sin After Sin, as the most relevant songs are here and sound better. For redoing songs in the studio, there are still screwups like the intro from Rob Halford on The Sinner sounds like he saying "The Savage", at least it does on the album I own.

This is still 70's metal, so for those that find music recorded from that time dated or just hate it, will feel the same about this album. But for those that like 70's hard rock and/or Judas Priest, this is a classic!

The Perfect Heavy Metal Live Album.......2006-09-02

I got the vinyl album when I was 16. I ve now this REMASTERED CD. It s better than the original, for sure. I cannot believe Rob did an amazing performance like this! This is a Classic. If you don t like this album, I m not sure you really like Metal. My Playlist includes bands like Vile, Mayhem, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Old Sepultura s*it, Napalm Death, etc But THIS album is necessary, is an essential. The first Heavy Metal Live album. It s in the same (and above)level of Rust in Peace (Megadeth), And Justice for All (Metallica), Reign in Blood (Slayer), The Number of the Beast (Maiden). You cannot be a Metalhead withou this one. You don t have it? What s going on with You?? Get it!! Now!!!!! ;)

The Setlist, The Production, and especially the performance can't get any better... This was the 1st Priest Album I bought over 25 years ago and I have never grown tired of it. Unleashed in the East is ... an alltime classic!

One of the best live HM albums ever!.......2006-07-17

Along with Black Sabbath's "Live Evil", Deep Purple's "Made In Japan" and "Made In Europe", Motorhead's "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith", the Scorpions' "Tokyo Tapes" and "World Wide Live", Rainbow's "On Stage", and UFO's "Strangers In The Night", stands Judas Priest's "Unleashed In The East".

As the title suggests, this is a Japanese recording, and I have heard that Japanese pressings contain additional tracks. But what we have here on the U.S. version is more than enough.

This album has unfairly been maligned as "Unleashed In The Studio" because of its excellent sound quality. I wasn't there to know whether anything has been "tweaked" but it certainly sounds live - and heavy!

Rob Halford turns in what is probably his best vocal performance.

Nowhere in the studio does the twin-guitar team of Glenn Tipton and KK Downing shine like they do here, especially on the intro to "Victim Of Changes."

You can actually HEAR Ian Hill in parts here, especially on the last track, "Tyrant"!

This would be the last album for drummer Les Binks. This is unfortunate, as he is quite good and worlds better than his replacement, Dave Holland.

In many ways this album signalled the end of an era for Priest that had been hinted at on "Killing Machine/Hell Bent For Leather": shorter, snappier songs, with less extended soloing, and a very live sound.

This album towers head and shoulders over many other live albums (including Black Sabbath's Ozzy cash-in "Reunion") and there is a place for it in every collection of true, British heavy metal. Rarely does a week go by without listening to this masterpiece.

If only this had been a double album..........2005-08-24

Actually this is a 5 star effort, but I deducted 1 star because they didn't make this a double album. That and the fact they didn't put Saints in Hell on this.

I never could decide what posed a more impressive sight, Halford on stage flanked by Tipton and Downing, or Meine on stage flanked by Jabbs, Schenker, and Buchholz, but I do know one thing: back in the late 70's both the Scorps and Priest were putting out hellacious live albums.

The Scorps came out with Tokyo Tapes, and Priest countered with unleashed in the East (live in Japan). Although both of these were surpassed by Deep Purple's Made in Japan, (not to be confused with Iron Maiden's Maiden Japan) they are still outstanding efforts...

Exciter gets it going, and then Running Wild, Sinner, The Ripper and The Green Manalishi just bowl you over. The first 3 minutes of Sinner are absolutely amazing (I'm listening to it again as I type). The pace slows a little for Diamonds and Rust (no one could keep it up that long) and then BAM Victim of Changes cranks it back up again. The album ends with Tyrant and Genocide which are also decent tracks. (The re-released CD includes 4 additional songs, but I haven't gotten around to buying it yet)

Both the Scorps and Priest would go on to release more live stuff, but if you really want to know what REAL LIVE METAL sounded like, get their 1978 releases. If you don't like them, then you don't like metal..

Priest at their Best! Absolutely amazing!.......2001-11-01

Who cares if this was recorded "live" or not?!?It kicks (...)in a way few bands ever have before or since. Priest always stood out from the rest of the new wave of british metal by there ability to play both hard and melodic and for Rob Halford's insane voice. On "Unleashed" they pillage the cream of their 70s catalog (with the exception of "Hell Bent for Leather" which can be found on the import version) and throw in a few pilfered cover songs they completely reinvented. The results are amazing. The playing is both tight and loose and Halford's ear-piercing vocals have dogs howling.

They explode out of the gates on "Exciter" and rip through 4 strait classics of the leather/gothic metal genre including their ode to Jack the Ripper. They change pace slightly during the 2 covers and then tear the roof off during "Victim of Changes". They close the set with 2 of my favorites "Genocide" and "Tyrant".

They would equal or better this on 2 of their next 3 albums, ("British Steel" and "Screaming for Vengeance") but they would never sound quite so "live" or unselfconscious again.

OFTEN IMITATED NEVER DUPLICATED!.......2001-09-30

Being the first of many priest albums I've owned,it covers the early work of this band as well as any live album has ever done.
No double live filler BS for this group. If Rob Halford ever rejoins this band definitely a must see concert. Saw these guys on the Heading out to the Highway Tour and couldnt hear anything for a week, Nobody makes you go deaf anymore!

Great early Judas Priest.......2002-12-17

For an early album, especially a first live album Unleashed in the East is an unexpected surprise. The energy projected during the concert is captured well and when played against the studio recordings of the same songs, the live versions on this album are almost always more enjoyable. Victim of Changes puts you right in the audience, the epic song will give you goosebumps.

The album was originally intended to be given away only in Japan as a souvenier of the tour, but the bands enthusiasm listening to the tracks prompted them to edit the recording (at Ringo Starr's house) and use as a worldwide release. Rob Halford was suffering a cold during the concert dates, and a few of the vocals were dubbed in during the editing by Halford running out on Starr's patio and re-creating the poorly sung notes.

A great addition to anyone wanting to be projected to 1979 and have a listen to the early gods of metal.
