Some Great Sounds.......2007-07-13
In agreement with another reviewer, I thought "Chapter V" was better than Threshold. With more epic sounds and better tracks, "Chapter V" just comes off as much punchier, faster and with more depth and richness.
The vocals on this CD seem much richer in substance and the tracks lack some of the "pop" feel of some of Hammerfall's other songs on the later CD. In addition, the back vocals are more consistent on this CD, not falling into some level of flatness. All of the tracks maintain a rich and varied quality.
The musical work on "Chapter V" is very tight and is simply well executed power metal, with all the fast and rapid changes, power chords and thumping percussions. It all works together to create a rich weave of sound that pretty much carries you along.
If you are going to buy Hammerfall, buy this CD. It is the better of what I have heard. It is still pretty garden variety, but for something requiring little grey matter to appreciate, it is good, solid power metal with some epic tracks to offer.

I like what I hear. I have not really listened to HammerFall, before. But, now I have 2 of there ablums. It's heavy stuff.
THE BEST POWER METAL ON THE FROZEN EARTH!!.......2007-02-04
This ranks along with GLORY TO THE BRAVE and CRIMSON THUNDER as one of my favorite HAMMERFALL albums. It's a carefully constructed anvil of straight ahead Power Metal!! It does have a slower feel, but every song is LOUD and POWERFUL!! Even the Ballads. The production values on this album rival CRIMSON THUNDER and surpass their BEST album, GLORY TO THE BRAVE.
Every track is great, but my favorites would be BLOOD BOUND and BORN TO RULE.
If you're looking to start a collection of Power Metal, Sweden's HAMMERFALL is the place to start!! THEY ROCK THE FROZEN NORTH!!
As well as the albums I've mentioned above, also get The Double Live album, ONE CRIMSON NIGHT and LEGACY OF KINGS. Hell, buy them all!! RENEGADE is GREAT too!!
Unfortunately, their lastest THRESHOLD is also their weakest. Avoid that one.

I took a chance on this from the 30 second clip. I was not disappointed. Good riffs and lyrics. Good rhythm and tempo. If you liked the older metal from the early to mid 80's, you'll like this(and I don't mean the hair metal).

This is power metal make no mistake about that and for what it is, it's very good. It has all kinds of nicely played well arranged parts that flow together seamlessly. It really is nicely done. It's not ground breaking power metal, but it's good stuff . The mix is excellent as well which makes it even better in my books as I hate crappy mixes.
The only thing I could have done without was the Yelling/grunting/whatever you want to call it at the beginning of the last track, Knights Of The 21st Century. Ok already, enough with "the Prophecy argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hell yeah", we get it already!
This is a fine cd, so pick it up if you enjoy power metal, prog metal, 80's metal etc as I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

The truth is that maybe these guys have accepted a huge hostile assault by many 'non True Metal fans' but on the other hand this is quite dishonest since Hammerfall's Heavy Metal proposal is honest, straightforward and most of all entertaining and full of power. Well nobody could expect to hear a new "Powerslave" (Iron Maiden, 1984) or a new "Restless and Wild" (Accept, 1982) album but the Swedish metallers have managed to deliver their Heavy Metal message with style and dignity. All the aforementioned songs will definitely work fine when performed live and we are looking forward for some Greek Hammerfalling pretty soon enough! The album will be released on the 3rd of March, this year, so you have enough time to swing your hammer and your axe and be prepared to be Hammerfall Blood Bound. Avalon. 2005.

LONG AWAITED, WHICH MAY HAVE EFFECTED RECEPTION.......2005-04-08
There is a condition in psychology called "anticipation". Basically, it means that the longer you have to wait for something, the more you build up your expectations for that something. Then when you finally get it, that real something has to compete against your expectations and usually suffers from that comparision. I think this is what is happening in my case. I've been waiting for this album for almost 4 months, and I thought this would grab me by the throat like "Crimson Thunder" did.
Don't get me wrong, this is a must-have album. "Secrets" doesn't quite jump out at you like "Riders On The Storm" did, but it still is a hell of a kick-off. Best cuts are "Hammer of Justice", the full-throttle "Take The Black", the cool, yet contemplative instrumental "Imperial", and the ballad "Never, Ever". "Blood Bound" is a great shout-along, but "Born To Rule" is a bit repetitious in the chorus.
I didn't get the extra tracks, so I can't tell you about the instrumental version of "Blood Bound", nor the live version of "Metal Age".
Perhaps if this were the first album that I'd heard from Hammerfall, or I hadn't waited for so long, I would have given a higher rating. But that didn't happen, so I have to give this a (still relatively-high) rating of 4 stars. Hopefully, others will find that I'm being too harsh and give it a higher rating. I don't think you will regret buying this album.
