2 out of 5 stars Deff Not their best!!!.......2006-09-13

This album sounds like a follow up to their first, as if the 2nd and 3rd had never happened. It's a real step back from the last 2, much cheesier, lotsa cliches(ie let's fu*k, lame or what!!). There are some cool sounds and they rock well but the 2nd and 3rd disc's are much much better!!!

4 out of 5 stars Not Breaking Any Barriers, But Worth A Listen.......2006-08-29

It would have been very easy to trash this to album, to completely rip it apart. Afterall, Dope have always been somewhat of a secondary act in the nu-metal genre, and the fact that the genre is struggling to keep alive makes it all the easier to criticize a band like Dope who stubborningly stick to their guns. But this is actually a good album. "American Apathy" is quite possibly the definitive Dope album, combining elements from all three or their previous releases into one pleasing album.

Like all of Dope's releases, there is a definitive cheese-factor here. The overuse of the "F" word is just one prime example. But, once you can get past that, there is an album here that is instantly enjoyable. A bit brainless, yes, but it works. Opening with a passage from the bible of Dubya, "I'm Back" aims to prove that Dope are far from dead. Following it up, better songs such as "No Way Out" "Survive" and "Always" have the band stretching out a bit from the norm. Instead of sounding like a low-grade version of their contemporaries in Powerman 5000 and Static-X, Dope manage to find a groove, and fall somewhere in between Fear Factory and Disturbed. The album is drenched in political lyrics and anti-Bush sentiments, so songs such as "I Wish I Were President" and "Revolution" speak for themselves. As strong as the first half of the album is, though, it tends to come undone with songs like "Let's F---" and "F--- The World." A cover of Depeche Mode's "People Are People" sounds a bit weird and out of place here, but does a lot to show that Dope aren't just a one-trick pony.

If the album itself isn't enough, plenty of bonus material -- which dwells heavily on old material -- is included to equal more bang for your buck. "F--- The Police 2005" is a bit pointless, as Dope's original cover did nothing -- but others like "Spin Me Round" (from the "American Psycho" soundtrack) and "Bring It On (F--- Tomorrow Mix)" more than make up for it. Overall. Dope's fourth is their finest. Sure, it has moments where it sags and the aformentioned cheese-factor does drag it down a bit, but as for simple, satisfying nu-metal, "American Apathy" delivers the goods.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not extraordinary.......2006-05-04

I bought this cd mainly because i heard dope was great from a friend, and for the most part i agree with him on that. The only downside is this was supposed to be a metal album, yet a few songs sound kind of whiny/punk to me, like Dream. Overall though the album was great, and if you got the bonus edition with the extra trakcs, the remixes are just as good.

5 out of 5 stars Dope rocks!.......2005-10-23

American Apathy. It's an awesome album. I got the Limited Edition version and it rocks. The tracks on A.A are really heavy. Their single Always is heavy but melodic. This is really a hard album that you'll never put down. I suggest you to get the limited edition. It's a few more bucks but it's definitely worth it! This album is definitely one of the best albums ever!
BUY IT!

1 out of 5 stars zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......2005-10-22

i enjoy the likes of nile, decapitated, suffocation--your basic brutal death metal. i can also get into some nu-metal like mudvayne, static-x and slipknot. to me, this album was boring. i couldn't finish it. the playing wasn't fast and technical, nor were the riffs brutal. the playing and drumming was basic, simplistic. to me, this is bland fluff. i cannot recommend it to ppl who like death metal. to others, perhaps it will be enjoyable.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent stuff!.......2006-03-27

Dope again, has talents only few metal bands possess. Continuous rhythm, and harmonic sound.

3 out of 5 stars Not so dope.......2006-03-11

If nu-metal is dead, then nobody's told this New York-based four-piece. You won't find anything on here that isn't on a thousand other rap or rap-metal C.D.'s. So, much of the song material/subject matter on "American Apathy" (i.e. "F the police," "f the world and f you too," "b - tch," "bring it on," etc.) seems very cliche, contrived, rehashed, and all around unoriginal. In fact, with machismo/chest pumping and misogynist attitudes (which are both hard for the listener to take seriously), it seems that Dope listened to a lot of ICP while writing this record.

Too make matters worse, the music and vocals aren't exactly innovative, either. Frontman Edsel Dope often sings in a way that almost echoes Ministry's Al Jourgensen to a tee, and the rest of the band sounds like a slightly heavier version of what you'll hear on any Marilyn Manson album.

Tracks four and fourteen, the cleanly sung "Always" and "People Are People," sound tailor-made for rock radio. Elsewhere, techno cuts like "Lets F" are unintentionally funny, "F The World" sounds like it was lifted wholesale from a Manson demo, and tracks like "I Wish I Was The President" are just plain stupid. Songs like these may be satyrical, but Dope have been around for a while (formed in 1997, debuted in `99), so these songs seem really amateurish for a veteran band like this one.

Now, I don't have a grudge against this band or anything, so I found that none of these songs were God-awful, and there were even a couple tunes (i.e. "B - tch (Alternate Version)," the cover of N.W.A.'s "F The Police," and "Burn") that were quite catchy and enjoyable.

So, "American Apathy" is listenable, sure, but, overall, it's just not very interesting. If you're a Dope fan, you'll probably really enjoy this album, but everybody else should probably stick with Wednesday 13. Dope pretty much just get by on shock value, so after their novelty has worn off, they're just another generic, has-been nu-metal band.

1 out of 5 stars Stick to being a drummer.......2006-02-10

Dear Lord, My IQ must have dropped at least 10 points for listening to this album. The good news however is that judging from the lyrics on this album my IQ would still be at least 100 points higher than Edsels.

5 out of 5 stars LOUD, HARD & HEAVY AND NOT FADING ANY TIME SOON.......2005-10-17

After I experimented with buying my first Dope album this year I was so amazed that I bought them all and defined them as being a cross between Static-X and Marilyn Manson. They were more than just an Ice-T remake of "New Jack City" which is an awesome remake on the TAKE A BITE OUTTA RHYME - A ROCK TRIBUTE TO RAP compilation (to say the least). Nonetheless, I bought them based on that song. Their previous lp's are FELONS AND REVOLUTIONARIES * LIFE * and GROUP THERAPY. This band continues to get better with each effort. Therefore, if Edsel Dope and the gang ever diminished one iota in their outings it would be accepted. How can one continue to just get better and better without losing ground... Dope'll show you how to do it. With AMERICAN APATHY the boys are at the peek of their game. Loud, Hard & Heavy, they're not fading any time soon. As you may already know the band is down to four horsemen (just as it was the last time around). Here we have Edsel Dope on vocals & guitar, Virus on guitar, (new axe man) Brix on bass and Racci Shay (aka: Sketchy) on the drums. A George W Bush-alike precursors the album, "Trusting in the sanity and restraints of the United States is not an option. Go home and die." And Edsel puts everything back into perspective with "I'm Back." And they are definitely back... All 14 of their new tracks will keep you headbanging well after the album is over and they knew this, thus they included three alternate versions of previous released material. And a second disc with six more alternate versions of previous released material. All their albums are worth your $ especially AMERICAN APATHY.

5 out of 5 stars If you like the old, you'll like the new........2005-09-07

I was a little sceptical about the new album because of the long delay and the whole mystery about which lable it was going to be on, but it was worth all the wait.
Edsel is still the amazing mastermind behind this band and still delivers with his aggressive vocals. This Cd seems to be more directed at Bush and of recent events surrounding the country (hence the name). Edsel never hesitates to speak his mind. I have no complaints or regretes with buying this CD. If you liked Life and Group Theropy you'll love this!
