5 out of 5 stars But beware!!.......2007-06-24

As awesome as this CD is, don't be fooled by the picture of the cover art as shown. Due to a law suit from Johnny Walker, the cover art had to be changed. What you will get is a plain b&w photo with their trademark skull. But the bonus tracks that the original didn't have will obviously make you forget about the cover!!

3 out of 5 stars Heavy bone-crunching rock and roll.......2006-07-08

My first experience with Zakk's playing was with Ozzy. Then on his "Boozed, Broozed & Broken Boned" DVD, in the interview extra he mentioned that Al DiMeola was one of his influences and this peaked my curiosity to check out his solo work. Three discs later, I can say that his output as a leader is consistent; he's a hell of a guitar player (not a great singer), and writes some heavy rock and roll songs. The only complaint I have is that this disc is LOUD, so much in fact, that distortion (not from the guitar) is audible and there is no dynamic range. Otherwise, a solid rock and roll disc.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2005-05-12

If you like Zakk Wylde's work with Ozzy, then don't spend your money on this garbage for it will forever tarnish the image of the guitarist for you. This is just ultra-sloppy, unoriginal metal. Guitar solos are pretty much absent, and most of the songs sound the same. I'm pretty sure Mr. Wylde was actually drinking black label when he wrote and recorded this. He put out *3* solid albums with Ozzy, and unfortunately, that will be the high point of his career.

4 out of 5 stars Heavy rock/metal...with style.......2005-04-14

I cannot understand why people think that 1919 Eternal is superior to Sonic Brew - this album features all the best riffs, singing and solo's. For example, the epic remake of 'Peddlers Of Death', which starts softly then explodes, or 'The Rose Petalled Garden' with a wailing lead guitar over haunting chords, the catchy 'Batch of Lies'. The rythm on 'Born To Lose' and the lead on 'Low Down' even sounds slightly funky! 'Beneath the Tree' is one of my all time favourite BLS songs - it combines heavy with melody - something not many heavy bands can achieve. Wylde shows off his skills in 'T.A.Z' - proving he is one of the cleanest pickers ever - not a note is out of place, and he's on an acoustic!

The strange, synthed 'Black Pearl' is haunting - and like many of the songs on here just explodes into the trademark riffery and pinched harmonics. 'World Of Trouble' has to be one of Wyldes most catchy choruses and one of his best solo's ever. 'Spoke In The Wheel' is kind of reminiscent of Book Of Shadows and lets the ears recover after the blistering World Of Trouble. The only downside, in my opinion, is the mushy cover of No More Tears - you just cannot touch that classic, but when I have 12 others to listen to who cares?

Some people may find the lyrics questionable on some of the songs ("Hey, Hey, You, What You Gonna Do?") and the bass on 'Bored To Tears' is slightly annoying after a while - but hey, then you listen to Spoke In The Wheel and Peddlers Of Death and the doubts disappear. The riffs on this album are more catchy, Zakks voice is better and the songs don't sound hastily rushed. Buy it now!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2005-01-05

There's no denying that Zakk Wylde is one hell of a guitarist, and I've loved other BLS albums, such as The Blessed Hellride and Hangover Music, Vol. VI, but this one just left me unsatisfied. The guitar is great, no doubt, but the songs just don't stick with me. The sound is not great on some tracks, and sometimes Wylde's voice is drowned out by the music. With the exception of Bored To Tears and T.A.Z., none of the songs really stick with me after I listen to the album. No doubt that it's a good album, but just not up to par for BLS.

Album Description

Some have pigeonholed Mudville's timeless yet unmistakably forward music as a straight shot of Portishead-like downtempo electronica. But Mudville contorts that well-worn archetype into a stirring and soulful sonic brew, evoking Curtis Mayfield's weighty grooves, P.J. Harvey's avant-blues passion, Jeff Buckley's soaring, jazzy laments and the futurist soundscapes of Dan the Automator. Noted multi-instrumentalist/producer Benjamin Rubin crafts Mudville's musical universe with truly iconoclastic beats, found sounds and live instruments that spotlight songwriter/vocalist Marilyn Carino's keen prose and dusky wail. Her strange, fearless voice is muse for Rubin's unsettling yet compelling blend of churning beats and lush symphonic arrangements. The results are impassioned, humanistic inner monologues that paint gripping and unsentimental pictures of love, loss and the precarious state of our injured society.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Somber Joy of Mudville.......2003-08-11

Mudville is ultra modern yet very soulful. It is electronic music that packs the organic punch of the best blues and jazz. These songs groove along and lull you like still water with a fierce undertow, found in the moving, surprisingly poetic lyrics by Marilyn Carino, who also possesses a crazy voice with the gutsiness of a rock singer but with the sweet subtlety of a jazz balladeer. The beats and arrangements are like nothing I've heard before, kind of trip-hop with a brain and cojones, but it would be difficult to compare Mudville to anything else out there. It's definitely head music and I like it more the more I listen.

This cd is more than metal it's hardcore Iron. This is by far one of the best cds I've ever payed for. If you don't have it get it, or any Zakk Wylde cd you wont be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Black Label Society!!!.......2001-09-03

I was sitting at home reading a guitar world mag w/ an interview with Zakk Wylde. The first thing he said was " It's simple really , we are out to destroy bands like third eye blind and blink 182. " After reading that, i knew i had to have a Black Label Society cd. This cd is amazing. It goes in so many different directions it unbelievable. The guitars are equipped with the nastiest sound you will ever hear, and the vocals are a 'Chirs Cornell/Alice In Chains' mix. If you are in to heavy music that really rocks check out this one. You wont be disappointed. Kick back w/ a cold one and enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars ONE TRACK .......MORE ZAKK.......2001-04-20

You can't get enough ZAKK so why not get another of his powerful songs with this cd... ONE track more of ZAKK how lucky can you get...? I got this cd and LOOOOOVE IT!

Bored to Tears, Batch of Lies, Spoke in the Wheel, need I go on people if you haven't heard these songs DAMN you, Holy tracks and cds, you have to get out there and get them fast. are YOU nuts? YOU have to have this cd in your collection especially a ZAKK collection.

Come on metalheads, get out there do some headbanging and party with a fifth with this one...hell even without a fifth of JD you will be entranced in this sleek clean sounded southern heavy metal group. Who would of thought it would work? I sure as hell didn't but when you hear it ahhhhh that voice melts you to pieces and the acoustics, you have never heard a group play until you heard them. They are not so damn noisy and rowdy you can't hear the acoustics they are perfection! get this cd and see if I am telling you the truth.

I have this cd and am honored to have it in my collection ZAKK YOU ARE METAL GOD FOR ALL ETERNITY...
