About the Artist
The keyboardist/vocalist/songwriter/producer is best known for his visionary work with Kansas. Singing lead on Kansas' biggest and best known hits - "Carry On Wayward Son," "Dust In The Wind" and "Point Of Know Return".
1980 marked a turning point in Walsh's career. He left Kansas after "Audio-Visions" and released his first solo album, "Schemer-Dreamer," which included some of his former bandmates as special guests. He formed a straightforward rock band called Streets which released two records before disbanding in 1985.
Product Description
On Shadowman, Steve Walsh had the freedom to do anything he wanted. So he dug into the vast catalog of music and found eight previously unreleased songs that he was excited to record. He took a year and further developed each song individually - recording and mixing them to perfection. Joel Kosche (Collective Soul) played guitar on the record. Joel put him in touch with Shawn Grove (Collective Soul), he helped with the mixing process as well. Everything was tracked at Steve's home on a Macintosh. There were a couple of other artists involved at this point. Matt Still who works with Elton John mixed one track, and David Ragsdale played a violin track for the song "After". In the end, Shadowman became a CD these well respected musicians and songwriters can say they are proud of.

Customer Reviews:
What happened to his voice?.......2007-06-27
The reviewers before me here must be rabid Steve Walsh fans. I personally don't care for any of his solo work. The material on Shadowman is banal at best, the musicianship uninspired, and Walsh's voice sounds tired and as though he is singing through a cheesecloth. What did he do to his voice? None of his solo material holds a candle to Kerry Livgren's work solo, or as projects with A.D. and Proto-Kaw. I used to love to hear Walsh sing and have seen Kansas live three different occasions. He was magnificent. Arguably the best voice ever in rock! Sadly, this dog has had his day... I would recommend this only for avid Walsh fans...
Walsh magic!.......2007-05-17
Steve Walsh is arguably one of the greatest rock vocalist of all times. He is definately at the top of my list. I know people complain that he doesn't sound the way he used to 20 years ago but who does? He sings with more conviction and passion than any other vocalist out there today. I know these songs are different from Kansas music but they still are thought provoking, melodic and powerful. I hope he continues to write and perform for many years to come.
A hit for Walsh again.......2006-06-24
Listening to Steve Walsh's solo albums always put me in mind of walking into a modern art museum. I may not understand everything I hear, but it is ALWAYS thought-provoking and interesting.
"Shadowman" is no disappointment from this perspective. From the syncopated rhythms of "Rise" to the ballad-esqe "Pages of Old", this album provides a framework not unlike that of "Glossalalia" salted with new and original audio impressions. Unlike "Glossalalia", the range of songs is slightly less gloomy in tone, though the disc is not without it's darker moments including, but not limited to the title track.
Of particular note on "Shadowman" are the complex rhythms of "Rise", the like of which the average listener is unlikely to have encountered before. This song is a finely woven tapestry of guitar, bass, drum, and voice which inexoribly draws the listener in and treats them to both a unique and powerful tune.
The more formulaic "Hell is Full of Heroes" has some of the finest and most precise guitar and vocal work I have ever heard.
People looking for Kansas in this album will, in all likelihood, be disappointed since, as in previous albums, Walsh seems to work at setting his personal work apart from the group's. True fans of Steve Walsh will experience (and I do mean experience) Walsh at his finest and most creative. For those who wish he would "go back to what he used to do", I say no artist should ever be asked to tailor his art to his audience, but rather, the ideal is that the audience grows with the artist's vision.
Steve Walsh you have done it!.......2006-05-25
I have got to believe that after being at the Pinnacle of rock with Kansas, Steve has asked himself, can I do it myself? This collection of songs should answer his question. I have been playing this over and over. Buy this CD. My only disappointment is that I will never hear these songs live. May Steve rock on!
One of the great overlooked albums of 2005.......2006-05-23
I've heard that sales of "Shadowman" have been quite low, and I find that to be a disappointment, because the music on the album is excellent - among the best songs Steve Walsh has ever written. Although most well-known for his vocal and keyboard work in the band Kansas, Walsh's writing skills always took second place to those of guitarist Kerry Livgren, and rightfully so. Other than a few standouts like "Point of Know Return" and "The Spider," most of Walsh's Kansas compositions were weak, often cringe-inducing, such as "Anything For You" from 1980's "Audio-Visions."
With "Shadowman", however, Walsh continues down the path opened by the phenomenal "Glossolalia," and may even have surpassed it. We're definitely not in Kansas anymore. The fresh and inventive "Glossolalia" was an album that took huge risks, some of which paid off handsomely and some of which fell flat. Overall, however, it clearly showed a Steve Walsh not content to simply rehash "Carry On Wayward Son" in concert ad infinitum, but struggling and striving to break new ground (what progressive music used to be about!), and generally succeeding at it.
"Shadowman" is less risky and less wild than "Glossolalia," but shows clearly that Walsh has learned the lessons from that earlier release. It is polished, focused, with a cleaner and ultimately more accessible sound. But don't let that fool you into thinking it is less creative - the music is spectacular! The furiously intense opener, "Rise," the anthemic title track, and "Pages of Old" with its haunting acoustical guitar riff, are among the album's standout tracks, but even its more straightforward rockers are strong, tight, and well-written. Of these, "Hell is Full of Heroes" is the clear winner. "After" is the album's epic piece, bringing together a variety of motifs into a seamless whole. Only "Keep on Knockin'" seems to suffer somewhat from weak lyrics, but this just serves to highlight the strong songwriting on most of the rest of the album.
With "Shadowman", Steve Walsh continues to push the envelope and, in my opinion, pulls it off with flying colors. If you enjoyed "Glossolalia," you will love "Shadowman." The only complaint I have is that there are only 8 songs on the album - I was left wanting to hear more! One of the best overlooked albums of 2005, hands down.

Absolutely fantastic guitar work!.......2000-07-23
Given the uneven quality of other Link Wray recordings, I really enjoyed this CD. Some of the vocal work by Mr. Wray is on the edge, but overall a top addition to my music collection.
amazing! amazing! amazing!.......1999-11-02
this is one awesome album from Link. incredible guitar work, at both medium, slow, and frenetic tempos, some great vocal tracks like Heartbreak Hotel and and It Was So Easy, plus Fogerty's Run Thru the Jungle. Made by just Link and his drummer Rob Louvers and bassist Eric Danno, this album kicks a**. Along with Link's live Walking Down a Street Called Love, one his best releases ever. It's amazing that this 67 year old just keeps getting better. He's at the top of his game right now
the guitar is there, but...........................................1999-09-11
This is not one of my favorite records of Links. he seems to be repeating old songs and calling them something else... and was that some kind of cheap drum machine I heard? Nope, this is not the way I want to remember Link Wray. Unfortunately people say his live performances have gone the same way as this record. Very disappointing. May I suggest Bullshot as a great Link Wray record. That is the way I want to remember him.
Link Wray is a guitar God........1999-05-26
Link Wray is absolutely one of the greatest guitar players of all time. His original guitar sound was light years ahead of its time. If you love loud rock guitar this CD is a must. With songs like " Rumble on the Docks " this is a one of a kind classic.

This is a great EP.......2003-10-28
I picked this one up a few months ago, and it's great. Both Teen Idols songs are catchy, and the Squirtgun stuff isn't that bad either. Backstabber from Teen Idols is also on "Nothing to Prove", but this is the only place you'll here Shadowman, which is an amazing track. This is a limited edition disc, and a must have for Teen Idols Fans.

"Honey, I think your stereo is sick...".......2001-11-27
Ever hear a computer have an orgasm? A coffeemaker's heart giving out? God's TV set having a "hellishly introspective nightmare"?
Me neither. But this album's pretty neat. Lots of strange electric beeps and grunts and squeals feeding back on and off each other for about an hour. No substitute for Barry White if you're looking for music to boink to, but at least your neighbors will wonder what the hell you're up to.
It ain't hummable. You'll never hear it on the radio. Good luck dancing to it. Your parents will finally be justified in the opinion that what you call "music" is actually "noise". But at least it's really FUN noise.
