5 out of 5 stars The seed of memory.......2007-07-17

I courted my wife to the music of this LP the better part of thirty years ago. It was, and is still one of finest collections of ballads and truth's recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Where was I when this came out?.......2007-05-13

I bought this cd because I heard 3 of the songs in Rob Zombies horror movie "The Devil's Rejects." Excellent movie. Now I grew up in the 70's, and I never heard of Terry Reid. But the songs in the movie were pretty good, good enough that they really caught my attension in a horror film. I looked this guy up on amazon, and discovered that the 3 songs I was looking for were on this one record. I ordered it.
I still don't know what to say. I thought, I'd heard just about everything. I'm a musician, and a music history buff. Where was Terry? This album is FANTASTIC! Sorrowful, jazzy, country like blues influenced, with one or two rock songs thrown in for measure. It is one of the most unique and beautiful albums I've ever heard.
It is truly an honestly wrought piece of work about what it was like in the mid seventies.
You know...I'd pay 100.00$ for this record and it would still be worth every penny. An album like this you'll own it forever. I'd like to thank Terry for putting this on the earth for us. He did more than he will ever know. A standing ovation. 5 super stars!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect album!.......2007-01-02

This cd is his shortest cd, but his best one by far. The songs on this album were simply amazing. If you like crosby, stills, nash, and young, you will adore this cd! This album has a very chill mood to it that makes it an instant favorite. Every song on here is a classic. Terry Reid has a mildly raspy, amazing voice. I think Terry Reid is one of the best singers and song writers out there. His singing is powerful yet suttle. And you will highly enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Terry Reid:The best kept secret in Rock !.......2006-07-16

Seed of Memory by Terry Reid is a delightful collection of tunes... Think "California nites with a bottle of wine & trusted company"... The entire cd is solid, with standouts being the title track- Seed of Memory,Brave Awakening, and by far the finest track- To Be Treated Rite ! Terry's voice, along with producer Graham Nash adding vocals, David Lindley playing slide and an uncredited appearance by Joni Mitchell in certain spots- make this perhaps one of the finest records to come out of the 70's- BUY it proudly and Pass on the Knowledge !!!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2005-08-21

I've only recently become aware of Terry Reid. I was watching "The Devil's Rejects" and really liked the songs on the soundtrack, not knowing that Rob Zombie used 3 Terry Reid songs. I picked up the soundtrack and after listening to it ad nauseum for weeks,I decided to try to find some Terry Reid stuff. Boy am I glad I did! "Seed of Memory" has not left my CD player since I got it. EVERY SONG IS GOOD. There is not one song on this CD that I skip over. I play it over and over and over again obsessively. I just wish I was around when his music came out initially. I'm 29 and "Seed of Memory" was released the same year I was born (1976....a GREAT year!LOL!). Why can't today's music sound as cool as this?

5 out of 5 stars Master-piece of all-time!!!.......2005-12-20

Just to add weight to the other reviewers , here, ..i've been an enormous 'fan' of TERRY REID, ever since finding a vinyl copy of "RIVER", still, a grrrrerat, great album , way back in the very early 1970's !!
Terry managed to get Graham Nash on harmonies for most of this set--it made the album possibly Terry's finest!!
"Faith to arise"--what an incredible , incredible opening cut, the title song , too, is a masterpiece, ..but my opersonal favourite HAS to be "To be treated rite"...words just can't explain what this sons of songs does to me!!!
"Seed of Memory"--the acoustic playing is phenomenal, Terry's voice never sounded better!!!!CLASSIC ALBUM--BUY!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best male vocalist EVER - the proof !.......1999-08-24

Listen to the emotional intensity of Reid's vocals on this album. His voice is amazing, plaintive, emotionally charged and vulnerable, rich and soulful. The first four tracks are as good as anything ANYWHERE - mainly acoustic arrangements with graham nash harmonies and david lindley's guitar providing superb support. "Faith to Arise" and "Brave New Awakening" are two of my all time favourite tracks. Such a tragic pity that Reid has never fulfilled his potential. A sad loss to music on this evidence.

4 out of 5 stars A must for Terry Reid cultists.......1999-07-22

One of Reid's finest albums, starting off with four terrific performances. Graham Nash is all over the record, adding a fine counterpoint to Reid's aggressive vocal style. Reid is one of the great lost artists in rock. Hope he finds his way back!

5 out of 5 stars Deserves to be a classic.......1998-09-20

There are some albums which defy gravity and this is one of them. A friend of mine bought 8 copies just to make sure he always had one..you may think about doing the same. An acoustic based first side has too many great moments to list: Graham Nash provides the harmonies to Terry's glorious lyrics and melodies. The title track and 'Treated Rite' are especially worth checking out. Side two turns more electric and 'Fooling You' is probably the most romantic track you will hear for a long while. Buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Beauty.......2001-11-01

This CD has been in my walkman for weeks
Wonderful short melodic piano pieces in unusual time signatures
Reminiscent of Satie's gymnopaedies (if that's how it's spelt)
Listen to this and Yoshimatsu's piano concerto
At last modern music that actually communicates on an
emotional level!

4 out of 5 stars follow up.......2003-12-14

Oops, sorry, forgot about the soloists. John Aler has a brighter tenor sound, not as dark as Robert Tear, but the way he handles the recitative text is very similar. Both he an John Ostendorf are a little heavy on the vibrato for my taste, but their diction is not that much skewed by it. J. Ostendorf is a heavy, rich bass, which is striking when you first hear it against Aler's brighter lyric voice. It almost seems wooly, but he steers it away from any Wagnerian tendancies to create a striking bu handsome compliment. Baird is gorgeous- it's that simple. She is not my favorite, but she comes real close. With a voice reminiscent of Emma Kirkby and expression along the lines of Janet Baker, it's a refreshing treat among all these increasing Helden-Sopranos who think that baroque music gives them an excuse to through all delicacy out the window. Over all, this recording is more of a 4 1/2, and I think the most well balanced one may come across.

4 out of 5 stars diamond in rough.......2003-12-14

The conductor may be no Raymond Leppard, but he's preferable by a great stretch than some of these other "new baroque" recordings out there where everything is a forte marcato allegretto. He maintains the baroque atmosphere, much like Harnoncourt's sound (is this he? I don't know who the conductor is). The chorus also has the baroque sound, but my goodness! Thank God for a chorus with proper vowels and a nice sound! Much better than some Deutsche Grammaphon choruses I've heard. If you like the Monteverdi Choir with Gardiner, you'd probably like this chorus as well (I myself am a choister and soloist specializing in oratorio and other such sacred music).

4 out of 5 stars An occasional Haendel........1999-10-26

The enclosed booklet is too poor. The singers are only good (the best is the soprano). Only good also the conductor . In this way this Haendel's work seems a minor one. Is really so?
