5 out of 5 stars An Epic Journey!.......2007-07-03

Thanks to s friend at my college for constantly bugging me to check out Symphony X, I have become a pretty big fan. I was able to get my hands on a copy of what many call their masterpiece "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy!" I'll be honest, this album in my opinion is one of the most epic pieces of art I have ever heard; and for me, ranks right behind "The Odyssey" as my favorite Symphony X album.

1. Of Sins And Shadows - This is just an amazing way to begin an album. Harmonizing vocals of heavy and rough, mixed with a higher tone make for a very melodic feel. The backing choir vocals also give it a very Bohemian feel (very Queen like). Awesome guitar work, tying the whole song together. Amazing! 5/5

2. Sea Of Lies - Keeping right with that feel, this track kicks in and pulls no punches. Again just awesome seemless instrumental work by the band fully harmonizing with the vocals. 5/5

3. Out Of The Ashes - I love this song. To me it seems to have a very deep meaning, but has an upbeat rocking way of making that message prominent. The backing vocals really add the element of having an "epic" feel to it, and again the guitar work is top notch. So far the band keeps the perfect score going! 5/5

4. The Accolade - This is the song that sold me on the album. After hearing part two on "The Odyssey" I knew I had to hear what they called part one. I was not disappointed in the least. Starting off slow and melodic, the song picks up steadily throughout. Awesome vocals and powerful lyrics, mixed with amazing instrumental work, make this song alone a classic! 5/5

5. Pharaoh - This is the first song on the album that took me more than one listen to really get into. A heavy tune to pick up where "The Accolade" leaves off. Heavy riffs and deep vocals make this song very prominent. May take a couple listens to like, but is a very cool song. 4.5/5

6. The Eyes Of Medusa - This track keeps right on pace with "Pharaoh." Heavy riffs mixed with very soft, yet very vibrant instrumentals. A lot of what the band does well is seen in this track. Like the previous track, it may take awhile to get into, but this song rocks. Very heavy and very dark! 5/5

7. The Witching Hour - This song is another very melodic output by the band. However, to me it seems just a bit rushed and cramped with a lot of material. Not a bad song at all, but a bit off kilter with the rest of the album. 4/5

8. The Divine Wings Of Tragedy - Ah, the epic of the album. A song in which the rest of the album was merely prepping you for. This song is a journey all its own! I love the beginning of the song esspecially, it is very different from any music you hear today. Very melodic and somewhat soothing! Than, enter the heavy power of Symphony X! Overall, a seven-part epic that will make you stand at attention and truly appreciate hat a masterpiece this album really is! 5/5

9. Candlelight Fantasia - I would call this a bonus track after the masterpiece beforehand. Again, the band shows no signs of slowing down in terms of having a lsting impact in their music! Love the melody and overall tone this song has, adding to an already steller album! 4.5/5

Overall, this album is a MUST HAVE for any and all fans of both Symphony X and/or Progressive Metal! In my opinion this album is one of those rare masterpieces that come along once every 10-12 years! Just pure brilliance!

5 out of 5 stars This is their masterpiece!.......2007-01-10

Symphony X's finest moment is right here, one of those albums where you press play (or whatever your mp3 player uses as a play button) and let it flow. Even the 20-minute plus title track is excellent, and keeps you interested all the way. I'm a fan of power/prog metal, and I own the catalogues of bands like Dream Theater, Artension, Stratovarius, etc. This is my favorite of the bunch.

Best song: 2. Sea of Lies

5 out of 5 stars Progressive metal you can not live with out.......2006-11-04

Symphony X - simply they rock, and this is a must have disc.

For any review to be honest you have to give the good with the bad, so lets get the bad out of the way first. The guitar tones get on my nerves after a while (borrowed straight from Diamond Dave). There is only so much my ear can take of that extremely heavy tone, it would be nice if it was mixed up a bit. Second - Like most bands they tend to take a rif or two, or an idea that has already been done before and make it theirs, For me not a big deal but worth mentioning in a review.

Now the good - Even with my previous comments I think they deserve a 5 and I believe this CD is a must have for anyone serious about their progressive metal collection.

The Vocals are that perfect blend of hard edge without that stupid (Grover) growl crap. This guy can actually sing. In my opinion he is one of the better metal singers - up there with the likes of Dio and the late Carl Albert (Vicious Rumors).

One of the things that makes this band so great is their compositions, with great use of each instrument, a good balance of going outside of the metal box with their use of symphonic instruments and even a hint or two of some modern Jazz. They are one of the better bands when it comes to mixing the Classical with the Metal (thus their name Symphony X).

This is one of those bands like Dream Theater where each of the musicians are top notch. Once this disc reaches your player it will stay there for a very long time.

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner From Symphony X!.......2006-09-06

I have 4 Symphony X albums, and I believe I have found their best music. Divine Wings of Tragedy is surely one of my favorites of the 4 (Twilight in Olympus, The Odyssey, and V The New Mythology Suite being the other 3). Definitely worth all 5 stars. Symphony X makes lots of amazing music. I heartily recommend all 4 titles that I mentioned. They are all very full and rich, and will engage your brain. Very entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars "On the edge of paradise/Tears of woe fall, cold as ice".......2006-07-25

Thus begins Part I of track 8, The Divine Wings of Tragedy, a 20 minute and 41 second extravaganza that on its own rates five stars. Part I is sang a cappella, with almost a barber shop quartet sound, and is followed by a power metal instrumental, the contrast working very well. Five additional parts complete the track, four of excellent vocals and another instrumental that covers more than six minutes. Normally that long of an instrumental would lose me, but there is so much variation here that the entire section holds my interest. This long track seems a harbinger of their greatest work, V: The New Mythology Suite (one of my top five). In fact, the words "Dies Irae" are printed in the insert at the end of the long instrumental, although I do not hear them voiced at any time. However, "day of wrath" (the translation of dies irae) is sang in the last stanza of the song preceding the long instrumental. As you probably know, these latin words are in the first and 11th song on V. Of Sins and Shadows and especially The Accolade are very good cuts also, but overall I cannot give the Divine Wings CD five stars. I can provide no technical reasons for this. It is simply a matter of after having listened to V, or The Odyssey, I am ready to listen to them again immediately. After listening to Divine Wings, the impression is that I want to listen to it again, but not until later. And basically that is how I decide all my four and five star choices. (Please see my profile for a brief discussion of my rating philosophy.)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever made.......2005-12-25

This is probably the hardest review I'll ever have to write. Why you ask? Well, this happens to be my favorite album of all time. There are so many things that make this record so incredible for me. First there is there excellent guitar playing of my favorite guitarist, Michael Romeo. His riffs are both heavy and catchy. His solos are just extremely clean and fast, as many people have mentioned already. Even his acoustic playing is great. He also adds the right amount of feeling and emotion everytime. Especially noteworthy solos are during "Of Sins and Shadows", "Sea of Lies" and all throughout the title track. Next there is the best keyboard player in all of metal, Michael Pinnela. Everything he touches turns to gold. Some of his best work is featured in "The Accolade" and the title track as well. As far the the rhythm section goes, there are absolutely no complaints at all. Thomas Miller and Jason Rullo are both top notch musicians. Last but no least, vocal god Russel Allen. He is surely among the elite class of singers today. It's no wonder this is my favorite band seeing as how 3/5 musicians in this band rank as my favorites.
The final thing I must mention are my two favorite songs on the album. "The Accolade" is possibly one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Russel Allen sings his heart out and Pinnela's keyobards are just immaculate. The title track is also one of the best songs ever written. Over 20 minutes of musical bliss.
I'm still certain I haven't been able to express all I have to say about this album in words, but it's the best I can do for now.
If you consider yourself a music fan, your collection cannot be complete without this album.

5 out of 5 stars The Divine Wings of Tragedy: An incredible display of talent.......2005-10-10

Symphony X's masterpiece, Divine Wings of Tragedy, surpasses every other prog metal group I've heard. I don't even like the whole CD. In fact, a few songs I can't even stand to listen to. But several are absolutely incredible. The Accolade and the title song alone are entirely worth the cost of the CD. Those certainly aren't the only good songs on the CD though. In addition to the others, Of Sins and Shadows and Sea of Lies are both VERY well made. A few of the songs' lyrics seem a little forced to me. Almost like the lyricist is trying too hard. Aside from that, I recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys music with a solid foundation of complex, well-written compositions.

5 out of 5 stars ITS ALL GOOD!!!.......2005-09-24

The reason for such a good rating is the fact that this album by Prog Metal band Symphony X is pure gold. Every song is amazing and the song writing is the best we've heard from Symphony X thus far. For metals best guitar, key, bass, drum, and vocal work pick up Symphony X's The Divine Wings Of Tragedy. YOU WONT BE DISAPOINTED!

5 out of 5 stars POSSIBLY THE BEST ALBUM EVER MADE.......2004-12-06

This is a record very dear to my ears and soul because at the time of it's realease it forever opened up the boundaries and horizons of metal for me, made me realize that beauty is possible within the metal confines.Nostalgia you say? Nah! Nostalgia is the act of recalling the past in a romantic way (and therefore changing the real events). This cd i listened to it today and it still blows out of the water pretty much everything else, metal or other styles as well.
For the most part this is neoclassical metal, as patented by Yngwie but it's leaps ahead the work of that guy who choose to repeat himself in every album and song. This music has much more variety, progressiveness, complex stuff (by each and every member, unlike Ynwie stuff) and beauty that the aforemented guitarrist only maybe DREAM of doing himself!
I really can't imagine someone not liking this cd.And if so, the world is terrible wrong, man.
Buy it to have a proper collection of music.

5 out of 5 stars Profoundly Technical.......2003-05-15

People need to stop writing reviews that use improper English and/or spelling. Are you really going to listen to someone who sounds like they didn't make it past the 2nd grade? I am here to say that this CD is jaw-dropping,and unbelievably technical. I once heard that their musicianship rivaled that of Dream Theatre's, and I thought; "Not possible." ... but truely it is possible. The tracks "Pharoah", "The Accolade", and "The Witching Hour" are catchy and vastly superior in technicality to any other music out there, amazing. The song "Divine Wings of Tragedy" will prove to you once and for all, they have the talent of few or no others. If you are a fan of ANY genre of metal, and you possess your sanity, buy this CD right now.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect array from the greatest progressive metal band.......2004-02-22

Symphony X is one of the best progressive metal bands around today. Most fans consider this album to be the band's best. The music is very diverse with many influences, from classical to metal and progressive rock, and at times they throw a bit of jazz into the mix. The vocalist, Russel Allen, at times, sounds like Dio, but overall has a very unique operatic voice. In fact, I'd say that it's safe to say he has one of the greatest set of pipes in any genre today. He'd yet to find his signature sound that he achieves on later albums, but due to the production value, he still sounds magnificent. Michael Romeo, the band's shred-master is a standout among the band's standouts and most of the musical highlights include interaction between him and Mike Pinnella, the keyboardist. They together achieve some complex though accoustically pleasing solos perfectly interwoven in a quilted and layered soundscape. The drumming and bass playing are also excellently performed, and the mastering on this album is nothing short of perfect. All of the drum pieces are expertly captured and mixed, which is needed in this music genre. Every track on the album is a winner, though there are a few that deserve to be mentioned in detail.

"Of Sins and Shadows" - this track wonderfully starts off the album with a sonic onslaught that reminds me immediately of Pantera. One of the heaviest songs on the album, it is also one of the best.

"Sea of Lies" - This and the following track, "Out of the Ashes" both serve up a vocal centerpiece ala Russel Allen. These two tracks compliment each other perfectly and when placed after Of Sins, the trio provides one of the best opening sequences of metal ever heard.

"The Accolade" - The opening of this track alone is worth the price of the album. It's a perfect blend of progressive and dark age folk music...something that has to be heard to know what I mean by that. The lyrics are particularly good on this track, though, as mentioned by others, the vocal is not pulled to the front enough....Russel has a great set of pipes and he should be up front in a "ballad" such as this.

"Divine Wings of Tragedy" - This, the title track, times in at over 20 minutes, and could have been released as an EP on its own. The numerous musical themes in this remind me of another progressive band, and despite its length, each section sounds like a new song so it's not so bad even for those less inclined to the progressive scene.

"Candlelight Fantasia" - The second "ballad"-like song on the album, this song reminds me a little of "Beethoven's Last Night" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, though the music and singing are better here. At times Romeo sounds a little like Van Halen.

If this review helps to convince you of Symphony X's genius then I've done my job, if not--keep reading the other 5-star reviews until you are convinced and buy this album today!

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply a masterpiece.......2004-02-12

Although i call The Odyssey my favorite symphony x album, this cd is right on his heals. Featuring 9 tracks and being over an hour long, this cd is a pretty deep, bulky release by the worlds greatest progressive band, and one of the best metal bands ever. Track one, Of Sins And Shadows, opens up the cd perfectly. It's a pretty good rocker, pretty fast at time with a good heavy sharp main riff to the song. Scattered throughout the song is opera like passages of people signing, pretty cool. Allen's voice is growling on this song, will cut right through your ears.

The Accolade has one of the sweetest keyboard parts in it ever at the first minut eor so of the song when it starts out. A pretty good, little epic song. Speaking of epics, there is the 20 minute long title track that has so many twists and turns that you'll have to listen to it at least 20 times to contain all the coolness it spits forth. The Eyes Of Medusa is one of the best songs the fab five have recorded, the chorus of the song is nothing short of deadly.

Candlelight Fantasia is the last track and the quite possibly the best way a album as ever ended, any album. This song is so good that it's worth the price of this cd alone just to hear this song. It's very very very smooth flowing song despite the fact it goes from heavy and soft a lot. A epic in itself, the best song on the cd, maybe even the best song they have ever written. I cannot talk about this song enough. Think of it has been the reason the cd was made with the other 8 songs around it just good litte bonuses.

Muscially, you can't get much better folks. Other than the The Odyssey, their heaviest guitar riffs are found in this cd. Drums are perfect, the bass is just amazing, and allen's vocals are extremely brutal at parts (for this type of metal anyway) and at other times he sounds like the best sing ever, he can have a very beutiful, emotional voice. One of the best singers ever.

Althought i still believe that The Odyssey is a even better cd, this cd is still one of the best, second best easily. If you go to a store and find this cd, GET IT. If you see both The Odyssey and this one then it will be the best 30 somethings you will ever spend, that i promise you my fellow metal fiends.

5 out of 5 stars BEST OF THE BEST.......2003-12-22

This is the first ever Symphony X album to purchase. I simply heard this album at a friend's place, and he told me that this band actually ripped alot of riffs from Dream Theater...That what actually made me listen to it...And guess what...Dream Theater is no where near this bands level either musically or lyrically. This album is actually METAL...Progressive, heavy and groovey...This album bought alotta people into metal! This album has the perfect combination of neo-classic, old school metal and progressive power metal...I think...Russel (vocals) is just outstanding...Nothing to compare with James of Dream Theater...Romeo, a very great guitarist that I can really say that is the master out-there...

This album is a must for real musicians who appreciate progressive metal at its best...This album has feelings, it has meanings and has music which will touch you deep inside...

This is the album which changed my musical life and as a musician, progressive music is not only about odd timings and "who-plays-200-notes-per-second"...It's also about melodies and musical feelings...That is this album...

Long live Symphony X!

5 out of 5 stars From Within the Mirrors Eyes..........2003-11-14

This is just an epic. The album starts you off rocking out with Of Sins and Shadows (also with a cool rocking choir vocals thing in there too). It will cool you off with the epic Accolade.

And then there's the epic: The 20 plus minute The Divine Wings of Tragedy. This is my second favourite Symphony X song (the other Epic: The Odyssey being my fav.). It's about the fall of the devil and the endtimes. Wonderfully done.

And the last track is my third favourite song. Canflelight Fantasia is just a very beautiful track. Something I would expect more from a band like Nightwish or Mozart or something. It's really beautiful.

Go out and buy this, The Odyssey, and V: The New Mythology Suite. The top three X albums in evar!
