While alt/nu/rap-metal typically bounds between two emotional poles--pissed-off and extremely pissed-off--and a musical range to match, the Deftones continue to push the genre's narrow boundaries outward on their fourth big-label release. Mic man Chino Moreno's patent yowl belies a range of emotion rare in the genus, while guitarist Stephen Carpenter seasons his buzz-saw assault with some industrial-strength riff textures and mixer Frank Delgado's spooky, synthetic textures further underscore Moreno's blossoming lyrical impressionism. If they stray uncomfortably close to jagged-rhythms formula in the album's opening quarter, the almost sunny sensuality of "Good Morning Beautiful" heralds some welcome shafts of light amidst the storm clouds. From there on, the mood drifts from languor ("Deathblow") to brooding ("Battle-axe," "Lucky You"), while "Bloody Cape" edges the band ever closer to traditional pop hooks before drifting into the resigned, psych-torpor of "Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event." A compelling and encouraging album--even if it's taken them 15 years to get this far. Enhanced CD features include studio and day-in-the-life-of band video footage, as well as 150 candid photos. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars THE CODE!!!.......2007-07-10

Ok.. as I started previewing the tracks, I thought "eh, nothing too enlightening here." But then, I noticed that the title for track #6 is the abbreviation for one of the most utilized video game cheat codes. What game, you might ask? Contra. For those of you who weren't around when the first Nintendo console came out, this was the code that you had to enter as the game started so you could go from 3 lives to 30! It was really the only way anyone could beat the game. I still remember this code!!! Actually, the Deftones got it a little confused - it's really Up,Up,Down,Down,Left,Right,Left,Right,B,A,Start

I was going to give this album only 2 stars, but then after I noticed this, I thought it deserved four - very, very cool :-)

3 out of 5 stars No White Pony.......2007-05-18

I'm still not entirely impressed by this album. There's a few songs such as Xerces, Mein, and I enjoy the style of Pink Cellphone however most of the songs don't stick out and have that appeal that I was initially searching for. Contrary, to what "harcore" Deftone fans believing that "White Pony" was a flop, I believe that this was, by far, their best album. With each listen it takes me to a magical place deep within the lyrics and Chino's amazing vocals. "Saturday Night Wrist" just doesn't grasp me in that way. I like the 'Tone's new style but it could use a little more work.

4 out of 5 stars good w/ the bad.......2007-05-17

some stuff on here is really good and some seems mediocre.the slowers songs are more fleshed-out than the heavier ones(the heavy ones on this one seemed to just 'be there' instead of having real presence like usual.)a good album, but i hope this isn't their last.

5 out of 5 stars another deftones classic.......2007-05-17

one of the best bands in recent history delivers again. every album they put out is top notch & different than the last. theres a reason these guys arent more popular. their albums are too good to go mainstream. they take too many chances & dare to be different. and it works for them every time. I hope this isnt their last album as some of chino's lyrics suggest.

5 out of 5 stars Very meditative and groove rock---at the same time.......2007-04-10

If you like Deftones, you probably know the direction on which they were going when they created the "change" song off the white pony. But this CD, it sort of puts you in a reality where...you see beautiful lights in the sky?. Majority of everyone probably like the deftones of old, but it doesn't mean that they can't change up a bit. I favor change is for the good. this Album has a meditative, dreamy and rock groove spirit behind it. I like this CD, and every Deftone fan should like it. Maybe songs like "mein", cherry waves, Rats, Rats Rats!!!, and the Kimdracula song (it's my favorite song on the whole CD)..Even though every song is extremely experimental, the Pink Cellphone is a little bit of a toss over....----it's a flat line joke-----something serious turning into something ------well--humorous---and even though i am a christian----it's still a joke no matter what---, but over all, it's actually one of my favorite CD's that i have in my collection. It takes your mind to a different place. it has a meditative feeling and the same rock groove that they had all the years of their rocking existence. It's a great CD. TAKE ME WORD FOR IT... not the best of the bunch..but....A GREAT CD

The aggro-rock movement spearheaded by the 'Tones, Korn, Sevendust, System of a Down, and Rage Against the Machine, among others, has been taking on new influences with each new release by the major players. White Pony may be the biggest leap yet for the genre, as Chino Moreno, Chi Cheng, Abe Cunningham, Stephen Carpenter, and DJ Frank Delgado maintain the fierceness that's earned them a rabid following. This time out, however, their patented brand of hip-hop metal is adorned with ambient and alt-rock touches. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars hypnotic.......2007-07-06

It took me awhile to get used to "White Pony" when it first came out. I was still stuck on "Around the Fur" and the def had grown up. I've caught up to it though and have to say that this is one of the most hypnotic albums I've heard. The blend of mood and rage really does it for me. From here on out I became a diehard def fan and promised that I would buy every album by them.

4 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-06-26

My fave song is "Change". I like this album because it flows well. It isn't too hardcore nor too mellow. I also like the song at the end. I listen to it on repeat. Love Deftones.

5 out of 5 stars Definately a heavy somber one.......2007-05-24

I bought this album as soon as it came out and played it over and over for awhile. The sounds are incredible because even though the guitars are so up front nothing seems to overpower or distort. It has a lot of great moments in it but I really was impressed with Chino's range, thats some powerful vocal cords.I think it could add to any hard rock fans collection.

4 out of 5 stars "Roll the windows down, this cold night air is curious.".......2007-04-19

Of all the bands stuck with the reviled nu-metal label, Deftones was one of the first, and it didn't do them any favors. They aren't like some of the other bands known for it, who inserted mediocre rap vocals and highly computerized and studio-perfected sound. They do have a bit of rap on the opening bonus track, although it's not obstructive and is pretty cool because the chorus is recalled in a different way on the album's final song. The hard rock music is decent, but the reason I really like Deftones is the vocals. The guy can sing, and his high voice contrasts in a very nice way with the crunching guitars.

He can scream as well as sing, and this is used along with the music to great some very nice shifts between hard and soft in the same song. Just listen to "Back to School (Mini Maggit)", "Elite", "Teenager", and "Passenger" to get an idea of how many things they can do and still sound like the same hardcore band. The single "Change (In the House of Flies)" interested me when I first heard it years ago, although I never got around to really listening to them until now, and I'm not sure why. Every song is enjoyable, and they manage to avoid all sounding the same which happens to a lot of bands with a similar style. It's not astounding but it's good hard rock.

5 out of 5 stars Atmospheric rock classic.......2007-03-02

This is one of the few albums I own that never, never, never gets old. I mean it! I bought this album right when it came out after liking 'Around the Fur' moderately. I was shocked at how far ahead of the last album this one was! I mean light years ahead! (no disrespect for those who worship 'Around the fur' and 'Adrenaline'.. they are both great albums but simply lack the distinct, brooding atmosphere that the 'Pony' reeks of) I have rarely come across and album as absorbing, and haunting as this.

From start to finish, the Deftones bounce back from dark, depressing, atmospheric pieces to violent, heavy tracks that just blend together to create something truly frightening. Chino, of course, stands head and shoulders above the mix, with his droning, dying, beautiful voice. You dont come across something this well put together every day. Intentionally or accedintally 'White Pony' is... amazing... simply amazing..

5 out of 5 stars my favorite album.......2007-07-06

I consider myself as a diehard deftones fan. I honestly can say that I enjoy anything that is produced by them. I think "around the fur" is the first cd I've owned by def as far as I can remember. I love the sound they have on this release. Its signature def and I can't get over it. This album still gives me the chills.

4 out of 5 stars Who's the Chick on the cover?.......2007-06-27

I haven't listened to this CD in years and when I mean years I mean since 1999, and I had only really listened to 1 song... My own summer, it wasn't until the b-sides cd was released and I watched the clip for 'Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)' I had a renew interest in the album. Upon first listen I was blown away, each song well crafted, full of angst and clever lyrics. After repeated listen's especially the ace 'Head Up' on high rotation, I could see the formula that has been ripped off from countless other 'Nu Metal' bands ***cough*** Linkin Park ***cough***. At least the Deftones made it their own sound and have grown into what they are today...

5 out of 5 stars A perfect balance between what we saw and what we knew was to come!.......2007-02-01

There was a time when I regarded The Deftones sophomore album as their weakest link, but after another listen I began to realize that it very well may be their strongest. Mixing almost to perfection everything that made `Adrenaline' so pulse pounding and everything that made `White Pony' so revolutionary; `Around the Fur' is the perfect transitional piece to show where a brilliant band was headed, musically and emotionally. Starting things off with the infectious `My Own Summer' and ending things with the strangely inviting `MX'; `Around the Fur' is close to perfection.

`My Own Summer' starts things off brilliantly. It sports a great riff, fun to listen to and even more fun to play. Chino's vocals are great and his screaming is just infectious (I actually have this song as my cell phone ring tone). This was one of the first Deftones songs I ever heard. It graced `The Matrix' soundtrack and proved to be the best reason to own the soundtrack in the first place. Brilliant way to start an album. Grabs you immediately and keeps you clenched in their claws.

`Lhabia' is another brutal track but the next surprise comes in the form of `Mascara' which is much slower, eerier and at times somewhat disturbing. Some have noted this may be about an abusive relationship, and I can see that here. It's beautiful in it's oddity for it's not a song you'd expect from this band, but it's a welcome addition to a masterpiece.

`Around the Fur', the title track to this album, is everything you'd want in a Deftones song. It starts off with some great drum work and then fills out much the way of `My Own Summer', commanding and infectious, a song you can sing along with and get completely stuck in your head. My old band used to play this song a lot because it's diverse yet not too complex. It's not standard so it's interesting, yet it's not too complicated to where you get lost figuring it out. Chino's lyrics are great here; different and thought provoking...the best thing about this band is Chino's genius.

`Rickets' is again, brutal. `Be Quite and Drive' on the other hand is not so brutal. Some have regarded it as the best song The Deftones have released but I strongly disagree. `Passenger' was far better (still my all time favorite Deftones song). I actually hated this song when I first heard it. I wasn't impressed, but the more I listen to it the more it grows on me. I actually really enjoy it now...but that took a while.

`Lotion' is straight Deftones, a track that could have passed for `Adrenaline'. Chino sounds furious throughout this song, and when he chants "I feel sick" you just know they nailed this song, they got it right. One of the things they do VERY right is `Dai the Flu' a song that stands alone as the best track on `Around the Fur'. It's eerie to a degree and completely contagious, a song that's unlike any other they've done. Chino's vocals are impressive, soft and delicate not to mention strong and determined.

`Headup' has Chino trading lines with Max Cavalera from Soulfly. It's brutal, intense and proof that the ONLY band that should even attempt the whole rap/rock thing is The Deftones. They just get it right. The closing track `MX' features almost a conversation type verse between Chino and a woman. It's a very different kind of song, but it's very well done and makes you want to listen to it over and over. A great way to close out an album. So, in closing...this is a fantastic contribution to the brilliance that is The Deftones and will look and sound pretty good in any CD collection!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Deftones album.......2006-12-13

I first got into Deftones during my senior year in high school when I went out and bought "Around the Fur" (the band's second album), and quickly became one of my all time favorite albums, and it's also my favorite Deftones album overall. The first song "My Own Summer (Shove It)" was the first song I heard from these guys prior to buying this album. Chino Moreno's vocals that can range from soft whispers, to melodic singing, to mad crazy screams. Stephen Carpenter has great guitar riffs that pack an intense punch and are downright catchy. Chi Cheng's bass lines are pretty cool and very ominous. Abe Cunningham's drumming may not be fast, but it's very hard hitting, and keeps my pulse pounding throughout. The first song "My Own Summer (Shove It)" is an instant classic and it's my favorite song on this album. The driving guitar riffs and the chorus is just catchy as hell. I definately agree with A.Stutheit that this song would make a great soundtrack for the last day of school (thank God I'm not in school anymore, hahahahaha). Another one of my favorite songs "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" is another instant classic and it's very melodic with some more catchy riffs, and some nice singing from Chino. Other standouts include the title track, "Ihabia", "Rickets" "Lotion", "Dai the Flu", and "Headup" (featuring guest vocals from Max Cavalera). Hey every song is a winner in my book. If you're a fan of Deftones, metal, hard rock, or if you're just a dude with an open mind like me, "Around the Fur is a must have. Peace Out!!

5 out of 5 stars The album that started it off..........2006-10-11

Prior to the introduction of Around the Fur, the hardest music I probably listened to would have been Faith No More. I had been a fan of hard rock since I was a kid but never much dug the metal scene. That was until I listened to this album....

By no means an all out metal album, it is however absolutely brutal (I mean that in a good way) at times! It drips emotion and energy like nothing I had ever heard. And woven within all the brutality is not only well written songs but songs with terrific melody. Its tough to even use the word melodic when speaking about Around the Fur because of its intensity and heaviness but its there. It was likely the reason I stuck with the album and later grew to consider it one of my all-time favorite albums.

The album starts off with the first single, My Own Summer, a hard hitting, energetic number, a great opening track. Stephen's signature crunching riffs continue on Lhabia, my favorite track from the album. And it continues throughout the album.... Other highlights include the title track, Dai the Flu, Lotion and Be Quiet..., the second single from the album. There is no real weak track on this album and the intensity never wains, even at quieter moments, for the duration of the album. By the end of it you feel like you've just climbed the stairs of the Empire State Building.... its exhausting and exhilerating at the same time.

This album came along at a dark time in my life and it could not have been better to blow off some of the pain and frusteration I was feeling at the time. A terrific album by an extremely talented band, a must for any love of hard hitting and aggressive music.

Call it what you want: emo-core, alternative, sneaker metal...the Deftones seemed the most unlikely quartet to come out on Madonna's Maverick Records. The music is agro, abrasive, and damn near primal from the disc's first few seconds. Tool-like whisperings of frontman Chino Moreno can bring the mood from disconcerting to downright dangerous in seconds. Heavy, chunky guitar riffs, mad raps, and testy tempo changes make this a must-have for fans of whisper-to-a-primal-scream alterna-rock. Killer tracks: "Bored" and "7 Words." --Denise Sheppard

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An Innovative Thrash Metal Record.......2007-06-28

This debut album from the Deftones is a raw, aggressive mix of thrashing guitars and hollow dyna vocals. The album doesn't have many soft spots and plays through like watching a horror movie on Halloween.

Much more stripped down, with less texture and guitar layerings than subsequent Deftones offerings---Adrenaline is rooted more as a hardcore punk record than anything---albeit a smart and provacative punk record.

This was the album that introduced the world to one of the most innovative and beautiful hard rock bands of our time, introduced a new style of soft to loud and a vocal that's as brutal as it is beautiful.

It's hard to skip over any tracks on Adrenaline--but the real standouts have to be: root, 7 words, engine number 9, fireal and birthmark.

5 out of 5 stars Deftones At Their Rawest, and Most Heaviest.......2006-12-21

First of all, I have to say if Dr.Sniv "Robotnik's Former Henchman" doesn't like Deftones, that's just fine with me. Just because he doesn't care for a band that I like doesn't mean that I'm going to stop being his Amazon friend. I respect his decision, I'm seriously cool with that (we all need some criticism every once in a while), and that's the way it should be. Well anyways onto the album, "Adrenaline" is the Deftones's debut album, and it's their most rawest and most heaviest release to date. Every song on here (minus the bonus track "Fist" I think that's the name of that track) is full of pure raw aggression. This album is also my 2nd favorite Deftones album with "Around the Fur" being my all time favorite Deftones album. Chino Moreno's vocals skills are just awesome. He can sing, he can scream and shout, he can rap, he can do it all. Stephen Carptenter's guitar riffs are great. They not only pack a serious punch, but they're also downright catchy as well. Chi Cheng's plays great bass lines that are very ominous, and Abe Cunningham's drumming while not fast, but it's still great, and it really hits the tone on this album. The first track "Bored" is an instant classic, and one of the best songs on this album. But my favorite song on here definately has to be "7 Words". This song is very heavy and very mosh worthy, and that heavy shout along chorus in which Chino madly shouts out is just addicting. My other favorite songs on here inclued "Minus Blindfold", "Birthmark", "Engine No. 9", "Nosebleed", "Lifter" "One Weak", and "Root". Anyways, if you're a Deftones fan, metal, rock, or just good music in general, than by all means, you must own this album. Later Dudes!!

5 out of 5 stars An Honest Debut for the Lost Generation.......2006-10-13

This big-label debut from a Sacramento-based Deftones always takes me ten years back, when I went to high school. But despite that, the album still sounds very original, and unfortunately for the music industry - very unlike the stuff you hear today. Their style is impossible to describe, because all descriptions fall short of actually hearing the band. Combining the emotional openness of pop, the teen rage of punk, and the street-smart culture of hip-hop, the Deftones painted a perfect soundscape for the bored youth of sunny suburban wastelands. Chino Moreno masterfully navigates his voice through a range emotions of a growing soul - from innocent love to dark fantasies, from hope to despair, from vulnerability to cruelty. Angelic soft whispers mutate into demonic screams, and hip-hop-influenced verses give way to Depeche Mode-like melodic choruses.

Musically Deftones sound quite hard, but not in a boring kind of way. Their music is fun, groovy, and has a great sense of beat. Bassist Chi plays creative, almost jazz-like lines, Abe Cunningham provides effective drums, while Steve Carpenter very masterfully blasts with simple but loud and chilling riffs. DJ Frank Delgado enhances the sound with sparse atmospheric effects and scratches. The whole band sound is really an attempt to unite a variety of cultural influences so common in the California Central Valley, and it pays off very well. The production could be more refined, but at the same time the roughness adds more fun to the first public effort.

5 out of 5 stars The start of something wonderful..........2006-08-09

I love the Deftones...can you tell? This is probably one of their finest moments, although I don't believe they've put out a single album, track, whatever that I'm not impressed with, as far as consistency this is one of the best albums they've done (although Around the Fur and the recent ST album are up there...and I do love White Pony) every track here is just brilliant. Someone mentioned that Chino's lyrics are contrite and uninspired. BULL!!! Chino is one of the most original lyricist's out there...just listen to the lyrical mastery on this album...but I will admit that he's grown so much over the course of his career. Around the Fur alone shows a lot of maturity in lyrics. This album to me is all about the music, all about the powerful riffs and pounding bass lines. Songs like the opener 'Bored' made Deftones a welcome addition to nu-metal...but it's songs like '7 Words' 'Fireal' 'Fist' and 'Nosebleed' that keep me a devoted fan. LOVE CHINO! LOVE DEFTONES! LOVE MUSIC!

1 out of 5 stars These guys give Slayer a run for their money!!.......2006-07-19

Yeah, this is an uncompromised metal assault!! Chino Moreno's gruesome lyrics and voice make Lord Worm look like Celine Dion!! The two guitarists shred and solo so fast, they give Yngwie Malmsteen a run for his money!! The drummer drums so fast yet stays on cue so greatly, he makes Dave Lombardo and Pete Sandoval duck for cover!!

As you can see, I'm joking. Chino has little baby squirel nuts, hence is super weak and annoying voice. His lyrics about "I hate my parents, my daddy touched my privates" tripe is nothing new, and nothing pleasing to the ears. The guitarists are very bad, they're downtuned and they only do powerchords and don't solo (because they can't). The drummer is very basic, nothing special. Bass? Can't hear it.

Want a REAL metal band from the 90's? Go for Nevermore. Warrel Dane has more talent on his pinky tip than Chino does in his entire body.

Album Description

The band's self-titled fourth album, as erotic as it is brutal, as relentless as it is gentle, rockets the Grammy-winning Deftones to the top of modern rock. Features 11 tracks, including the single 'Minerva' along with a 20-page color booklet, enhanced material with 20 minutes of exclusive video footage from inside the studio & a day in the life of each band member plus 150 candid photos. 3 out of 5 stars Once again tricked by the deftones.......2007-06-17

So I am trying to get into some more mainstream music and this is actually the second deftones cd that I purchased. Just not that good overall. A couple of songs are good but as an album it just didnt do it for me.

4 out of 5 stars dark n deft.......2007-05-17

this is a bit darker than what they usually come up with, but it makes for something beautiful in a shadowy manner.great cubist album.

2 out of 5 stars Too Slow.......2007-03-21

Don't get me wrong; I love it when Chino gets all sentimental but a whole album? Come on, can I get something I can snowboard too? I don't hate the album it just wasn't what I was expecting after Adrenaline, White Pony and Around the Fur (three fantastic albums by the way). All those albums rocked my socks off but I'd suggest picking Saturday Night Wrist instead of buying this one if you don't have it already.

5 out of 5 stars Deftones!.......2007-02-19

I always thought The Deftones were too good for the Nu Metal genre a comment they would probably agree with.

They where heavily paired with Nu metal turds Korn at the beginning of there career even though both bands sounded very different, but when Korn got worse with each new realese Deftones improved.

White Pony was the turning point in their career, it was there first classic album that they made and is one of the finest records of the late 90s. This self titled follow up is there best work yet. Unlike the other records the Deftones ditched the rap/ rock style they they were renowened for and Chino decided to sing more.

I think Chino Moreno has a great brooding voice which works well with the creepy sounds provided by DJ Frank Delgado. Stephen Carpenter plays some tremendous guitar work on the album and theres a strong rythem section provided by bass player Chi Cheng and excellent drummer Abe Cunningham.

Hexagram is a strong opener one of the best tracks on the album pretty much raw and in your face a great song to start the album.

Minerva is one of the Deftones greatest ever songs, its classic Deftones, great vocals by Chino and a really haunting sound from Delgado.

When Girls Telephone Boys is defitnatly the heaviest song on here perhaps the heaviest song the Deftones have done, it rocks though.

Bloody Cape is another great song that gets your adrenaline going, has a real grunge feel to it.

All though I have yet to hear the new album Saturday Night Wrist I still think that Deftones its Chino, Steph, Abe, Chi and Frank's best work to date. I highly reccomend this album to people looking for something creative and Innovative.

4 out of 5 stars Great Record.......2007-02-14

This is a good record. I don't think it's as good as White Pony, but it's still great. "Minerva" is probably my favorite Deftones song. cant go wrong.

Album Description

A metallic rush of guitars and thundering drums, Deftones' music both epitomizes the hard-and-fast glory of post-grunge alt-metal and blows it wide open with innovation. As the Northern California-bred quintet evolved through a string of acclaimed albums and incessant, high-velocity touring, they also incorporated modern rock influences including The Cure and The Smiths into their Soundgarden/Tool/Rage Against the Machine/Pantera-inspired sonics. Now Maverick's new compilation sheds light on lesser-known output with covers, unreleased mixes, video B-Roll, and other choice rarities.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome as usual.......2007-02-23

All I have to say is that this album rocks. The music selection is great. Their cov er of No Ordinary Love by Sade is one of my favorite covers ever done. Simple Man could of been done a little bit better but i'm sure Lynard Skynard would of been proud. They rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars better than expected.......2007-01-14

i put off buying this partly from some of the press it was getting but it's not bad at all. the dvd's ok, nothing to get excited about unless you're pretty hardcore but the cd's better then it's getting credit for. a nice surprize. i for one think the covers are great listens. it's a much better "B-Sides & Rarities type" package then the other's i've heard. i'd reccomend it.

4 out of 5 stars Odds and Sods Collections Are Never Perfect.......2006-12-29

First off, the DVD is great, and that's probably the reason most people buy this set. It's nice to have all the videos in one place. As for the CD, it's a mish-mash and suffers as a result, but that's to be expected. Most of the songs on here are just curiosities, especially the four reworked/acoustic versions of older songs. You probably won't revisit them too often, with the possible exception of the acoustic "Be Quiet and Drive" which is very compelling. Then there are EIGHT covers, which vary in quality. The Deftones' interpretations of "Savory" and "The Chauffeur" are fantastic, and "Simple Man" and "No Ordinary Love" are also unique and good. "Wax and Wane" is not a very good song in its own right, so I don't care for the cover. Unfortunately, "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" and "Please Please Please..." just aren't great covers. Finally, there are two Deftones originals, "Crenshaw Punch" and "Black Moon." The first is a great addition to their catalogue, while the latter is purely a rap song which I don't like. In terms of pacing, the disc is great until the four-song set of "Black Moon"-"If Only Tonight We Could Sleep"-"Please Please Please..."-"Digital Bath (acoustic)," which almost kills it, though it's revived by "The Chauffeur." All in all, you're sure to enjoy several of these tracks (at least "Savory" and "The Chauffeur") as a Deftones fan, but you're also likely to find at least a couple of songs to be lacking.

Sensual and mellow haven't been adjectives associated with aggro band Deftones--until now. The quintet's third outing finds their aural punch softened and deepened, lending songs such as "Digital Bath" a sultry, layered edge. More Tool than Pantera in its sonics, White Pony, in fact, includes a collaboration with Tool/A Perfect Circle singer Maynard James Keenan in the haunting "Passenger." Fans of the band's earlier, harder albums will still find some satisfaction in these developments. "Elite" boasts chunky riffing and metal/rap leanings, while "Korea" is anguished and edgy. More striking, however, are songs like the quirky, futuristic, fervent "RX Queen" and the gentle "Teenager." If you're in the mood to mosh, 1995's Adrenaline and '97's Around the Fur are better choices. For a different Deftones journey, however, delve into this diverse, dynamic, and heady album sans preconceived notions and let White Pony take you on a wondrous ride. --Katherine Turman

4 out of 5 stars My first Deftones album..........2005-05-22

I'm a big fan of Chevelle, Slipknot, and Linkin Park. Yes Linkin Park, and from the reviews I've read about Deftones' albums it doesn't seem like many of their fans like Linkin Park. But oh well, I like Linkin Park and Deftones. This is my first Deftones album and overall I have to say its pretty good. It has some good songs and some alright songs but you have to listen to most of them several times to get to really like them. Anyway, here are my ratings on the songs:

1. Feiticeira 2/5 - Not a great song to start the album off with but its an alright song.
2. Digital Bath 3/5 - I like this song. Its got a nice beat to it.
3. Elite 1/5 - Too much screaming. Not a very good song at all.
4. Rx Queen 4/5 -Love the song. Great beat. Well done.
5. Street Carp 2/5 - Lame lyrics.
6. Teenager 2/5 - An ok slow beated song. Kinda boring.
7. Knife Prty 4/5 - Don't like the lyrics. Love how he mixes the guitar with his voice.
8. Korea 3/5 - In my opinion the heaviest song on the album.
9. Passenger 5/5 - My favorite song on the album. Love the lyrics. Love the beat. Just wish the 1st chorus could have been repeated a few more times. The 2nd one just isn't as great.
10. Change(In the House of Flies) 4/5 - Good song.
11. Pink Maggit 1/5 - Worst song on the album.

5 out of 5 stars Go Deftones!!!.......2005-04-18

Hell yes! This album finally sees Deftones reaching damn near sonic perfection! I liked Adrenaline, I VERY much enjoyed Around the Fur, and I LOVE this album. This album is filled to the brim with everything I love about this band! "Feiticiera" is brilliant...did you notice how the song has no chorus, but it flows so well, you don't even realize it at first?? This is a very easy album to get totally lost in. Chino's voice sounds better than it ever sounded before, the guitars grind, blister and blugeon the ears, while trippy synth washes and strange soundscapes interweave themselves into the songs, the bass is deep and rich and the whole album has a very subtle and hypnotic intensity to it. Although it's considerably less in-your-face than Adrenaline and Around the Fur, I think White Pony is in some ways, even heavier than those albums. The guitars here are about as sludgey and razor-sharp as they always were, but in terms of mood and atmosphere, this is one hell of a heavy, heavy album. I remember when I bought this album...it was at the beach one summer. I went out and bought this and came back to relax in the sun and listen to it. It was a GREAT experience...This is perfect blasting VERY loud on lazy hot summer days. Just let it play and don't worry about skipping any tracks...they're all good. Actually "Elite" is the only track I get a bit tired of sometimes, but it's still a good song. If you get one Deftones album, get this one. It's filled with more great, smart musical ideas than most alternative metal bands have EVER thought of in their entire careers.

5 out of 5 stars A vocalist's wet dream........2004-11-09

I don't really have anything to say about this album besides the fact that it got me into singing, and I'm very glad I found it. This album vocally is truly outstanding.. listen to digital bath to find out what I mean.. and Passenger features the great Maynard James Keenan from Tool.. while for your screaming fix we've got Elite and Korea. Truly a great album, amazing for vocal practice.

5 out of 5 stars Confused? You'll know when you're ripe. .......2004-09-07

After the 1997 masterpiece, "Around the Fur", the Deftones continued to incorporate heavy layers of mood and atmosphere into their music, inspired by bands such as The Cure. The result was "White Pony", which was hailed by critics as one of the best albums of the year upon its release in June of 2000.

"Feiticeira" opens the album on a heavy note. The song is fast paced and unpredictable, containing numerous tempo changes as lead singer Chino Moreno puts himself in a fictitious kidnapping scenario.

"Digital Bath" is another tune in which Chino creates an eerie scenario for the song (electrocuting a woman in a bathtub), but the morbid lyrics are masked by his amazing vocal delivery. The seductive, ethereal verses are the perfect lead in for the soaring, spine-tingling chorus.

"Elite" is probably the heaviest Deftones song ever; a brutal onslaught of unrelenting neo-industrial/metal guitar riffs and insane vocals from Chino - he literally screams his way through the whole thing. It'll seem un-listenable at first, but give it time to grow. I couldn't stand it at first, but now it's one of my favorites (I even quoted a part of it in my title).

On the opposite side of the spectrum is "Teenager", the most intimate, beautiful Deftones song ever. The electronica/trip-hop beat is the perfect backdrop for Chino's gorgeous vocals.

Speaking of amazing vocal performances, check out Rodleen in the background of "Knife Prty". Think Claire Tory from Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig in the Sky", but scary. It's amazing that someone can *shriek* high notes like that. The song itself is great too, one of the most haunting, mysterious tunes on an album full of haunting, mysterious tunes.

The heavy, carnal "Korea" is probably my favorite song on the album - a wonderful blend of crunching guitar riffs, enigmatic lyrics, and an awe-inspiring bridge that soars majestically amongst its power and aggression.

"Passenger", in which Chino trades off vocals with Tool/A Perfect Circle front man Maynard James Keenan is another awe-inspiring song that layers metal-like guitars over an atmospheric backdrop.

"Change (In the House of Flies)" is easily the most accessible song on here, and its video even earned the Deftones a slot on MTV's TRL for a few days. It fits the mood of the album perfectly though - slow creeping, spooky verses lead into the heavy-but-catchy chorus, and an even catchier bridge.

"Pink Maggit" closes the album in a perfect way. An 8 minute epic that goes from minimalistic and eerie to upbeat and anthematic. The latter part of the song was heavily reprised in "Back To School (Mini Maggit)", the second single which was tacked onto the beginning of a re-release. It's a decent nu-metal style song, but this is the true version of the album.

Other standouts include the hypnotic, sexy groove of "Rx Queen" and the straightforward, catchy "Street Carp".

Although I slightly prefer "Around the Fur" and their most recent self-titled album, "White Pony" is definitely the Deftones' best effort in terms of incorporating mood into their music. Everything on here is haunting, mysterious, etc., whether it be the music, lyrics, or in many cases, both. It's also the most accessible Deftones album overall, as it contains a bunch of really strong hooks amongst all the experimenting.

Highest Recommendation.

Best Songs: Korea, Elite, Teenager, Pink Maggit, Passenger, Digital Bath.

5 out of 5 stars Take a Ride.......2004-06-24

Beautiful in its dark, gloomy dissonance, the songs on White Pony combine Chino Moreno's haunting melodies crooning over churning guitar riffs which are overlayed by moody textures provided by Frank Delgado's turntables to create atmospheric hard rock unlike anything ever heard -- or felt -- before. The songs could easily follow in the like of Pink Floyd while still living up to the mosh-pit insanity that inspired 1995's Adrenaline, and each song is powerful enough to drive the listener into emotional overhaul as he bangs his head to the cymbol-laced "caffiene beats" of drummer Abe Cunningham. Digital Bath is outlined with moody background electronics and an infectious drum intro before being taken over by a call-and-response guitar riffs and incredible melodies from the likes of Moreno. Rx Queen is another electronic-laced track with a massive percussive effect traced by intricately layered guitars and whispered vocals. Street Carp is a simple, straightforward hard rock smash in the vein of Around the Fur's Lhabia and songs such as Elite and Korea are massive in their bombastic heaviness with chunky riffs and fast-paced rushing. Passenger strings together a dextreous guitar riff, heavy bass, and shrouded vocal interplay between Chino and guest Maynard (Tool, A Perfect Circle). However, the album's glory shines through the most in Change and Knife Prty, two songs that show the newest side of Deftones, while keeping the Deftones heaviness we've all come to love. Atmospheric and moody, they send chills down your spine unlike anything else you've ever heard.

Overall, this album is Deftones' most experimental album that pushes the "boundaries" of rock beyond anything done before. DJ Frank Delgado, who appeared on a few songs on Adrenaline and most of the songs on Around the Fur, really makes his presence known on this album in an extremely subtle way. One of the greatest things about this album is that none of the songs sound the same. From the downtuned, crunching glory and screaming grungy vocals of Elite, to the acoustic-string sampler Teenager, and EVERYTHING in between, White Pony never fails to deliver. The only way to describe every track is atmospheric and dark. It's heavy, but it is also beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars hardcore Deftones Fan(s)/Red and Black Edition!!.......2006-06-04

I think alot of people here are missing the point the red and black edition are for the hardcore deftones fan! that is why there is a limited pressing (only 50,000 to be exact!) White Pony in itself is already a great album! but if you're a hardcore deftones fan then this is it you will know the pride you take when you show off your red or black edition! But when it comes down to it you have a choice of either the Boys Republic (red and black edition) or Back to School (re-released edition!) I personally favor The Boys Republic because to me Back To School seemed to commerical and and it doesn't fit the album. It sounds like it belongs on there first album. White The boys Republic adds to the ambient feel of the album. It makes it feel 110% complete! If you get this version i recommend it because for one an extra 4 bucks you can get the limited edtion version which is numbered! if you like back to school get the re-release! which i personally think is the worst song on that album! the deftones made a great album but the rapping element of back to school sort of threw off the whole thing! so to each there own but if you can The Boys Republic is worth the money and not only that you get a limited edition version of the album!

4 out of 5 stars Not their best.......2006-04-21

I bought the red limited edition album and i enjoy it very much but "Back to School" is not on it. That is the only reason why it gets four stars. "The Boy's Republic" is a great addition to the CD. If you want to hear the Deftones at their best in my opinion buy "Around the Fur"

5 out of 5 stars Album of the Millennium.......2004-04-20

When I think back to the summer of 2000, my best memory is listening to the Deftones' third album 'White Pony' every day. It stands out as one of the best albums in my collection and I still listen to it today and enjoy it just as much as I did when I first bought it. 'White Pony' is the definitive Deftones album. If you are looking for a place to start, look no further. This album perfectly displays what the band is capable of. With one song they can rock you around the room with brute force and then with the next, cushion you with a ambient, mellow ballad. DJ Frank Delgado joined the band full-time with this effort (he appeared on the first two albums, although minimally) and his contributions help give weight to the songs. Whereas other DJ's in rock bands don't do much but make a distraction, Delgado adds subtle texture to the already explosive material. Chino Moreno's vocals are in top form here. He effortlessly sways from calm and peaceful, emotion and fragile, to screeching and howling defiantly. Stephen Carpenter's hypnotic guitar riffs are much more diverse here than on previous efforts; without him I think the band's music would suffer as a whole. He is truly one of the most unqiue and gifted guitarists in the nu-metal world (although Deftones bend and defy the rules of the genre). Songs like "Elite" and "Street Carp" would fit in with earlier efforts, but tracks like "Digital Bath," "Knife Prty" and "The Passenger" (which features vocals by Tool/A Perfect Circle frontman Maynard James Keenan) break the mold and move the band in a more dynamic direction. "Teenager" is the moodiest cut on the album and gives Delgado his time to shine, while Chino whispers soothingly giving the song a sound akin to Smashing Pumpkin's "Mellon Collie" album. "Pink Maggit" (which would later be reborn into the single "Back To School") caps the album off perfectly, with a whirlwind that seems to merge all the best elements from this album into one song, which makes the bonus track "Boy's Republic" seem a bit tacked on, even if it is another stellar track to add to the fold. Overall, 'White Pony' stands as the Deftones' best work; where the band reached it's most successful point. It went on to sell a million plus records and the single "Change (In The House Of Flies)" still remains a staple of modern rock radio. In a world where hard-rock music and nu-metal in particular are rather one dimensional, an album like this and a band like the Deftones are truly a gift. 'White Pony' is, in my opinion, the best release (so far) in the new millennium and I have a hard time imagining anyone matching or exceeding it's potency anytime soon.

5 out of 5 stars A well-rounded classic!.......2004-01-20

Until the release of this album, the Deftones have been one of hard rock's best kept secrets, due to their limited mainstream exposure. Nevertheless, they continue to amaze. Subjectively hailed as their best album, White Pony contains some of their best material as expressed by various timbres. Heavy and aggressive moods are offered in "Elite" and "Korea", while melancholy, yet triumphant tones are conveyed in "Digital Bath", "Knife Prty", "Change (in the House of Flies)", and "Pink Maggit". This (as well as the Black cover) version is the second variation of White Pony and is differentiated by the additional 12th track, "Boys of the Republic", which is perhaps one of their best tracks, with simple verses, dominated by a beautifully harsh melody comparable to Around the Fur's "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)". After all is said and done, the Deftones deliver a variation of their third album which would comfortably be in heavy rotation in anyone's collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Deftones at their peak.......2003-10-05

"Around the Fur" may be the Deftones' best album, but "White Pony" comes pretty close to that category. Unlike the previously mentioned album and their debut "Adrenaline", "White Pony" finds the band getting more melodic with their sound while still maintaining a heavy edge. Less rap/rock sounding than their previous releases and with slicker sounding production, "White Pony" is a treat for the ears. Standout tracks include "Digital Bath", the Grammy winning "Elite", "Rx Queen", "Korea", "Teenager", "Pink Maggit", and the album's big highlight "Passenger" which features Deftones voice Chino Moreno singing with Tool/A Perfect Circle frontman Maynard James Keenan. That song is worth the price of admission alone, and is incredibly haunting. This is the Red Limited Edition of "White Pony" that was released (along with a Black cover version as well) that features a bonus track exclusive to this version called "Boy's Republic". The song is pretty decent, but not worth shelling out more money than you should if you allready own the original album. All in all, consider this essential listening, even if your not a hardcore Deftones fan.

3 out of 5 stars good for the true fan.......2004-05-08

Let me begin by saying I'm a big Deftones fan and that this CD is quite good. It's cool to hear flanger effects on the opening chimes to Live Mini Maggot compared to the studio version. Acoustic Change in the House of Flies was cool too. I only gave it 3/5 stars because on track 4, Nosebleed, theres a skip. And i've exchanged this item for a new one only to have the same problem. Also the levels between songs are messed up. i thought it could have been mixed a little better.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK..........2003-04-27

I purchased this CD (my first Deftones CD) two weeks ago, after hearing Back to School, Be Quiet and Drive and Passenger. I have to say I was pretty dissapointed with it, the presentation of the CD was cool but the content on the CD is average, it certainly doesn't showcase Deftones at their best. Because of a crack on the cover, yesterday I took this back for a refund. The next Deftones CDs I plan to buy are "Around the Fur" and "Deftones", released on May 20th 2003. As for "Back to School EP", only buy it if you want to complete your 'Tones collection.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Stop-Gap EP.......2002-10-23

This EP was released all over Europe (not just Germany as one reviewer said) in two editions, one with a slipcase cover and one without, to coincide with the Deftones 'Back To School Tour' with support from Linkin Park and Taproot in early 2001. The main selling point of the EP is that it features the single 'Back To School' which came about after the band were playing 'Pink Maggit' at a practice session and began to jam, eventually creating the new song. The other tracks included on this release are a live version of 'Back To School' as well as the original song 'Pink Maggit'. Old live favourites 'Feiticeira', 'Nosebleed' and 'Teething' are also included along with the acoustic version of 'Change (In The House of Flies)'. The EP also features a bonus multimedia feature in the form of 'White Pony EPK', the electronic press kit sent out to journalists before the release of the 'White Pony' album. The EPK is a mini-movie of sorts with the band playing as the action unfolds. Overall, this is a solid offering from the Deftones and will definitely help to tide fans over until the release of their fourth studio album 'Lovers' as well as bringing back memories of the tour for fans like myself who attended any of the shows.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but here is some info to help you..........2001-04-04

This EP is great! It is an Import from Germany, the European Import is the same, but has no slip case (the picture that you see here is for the slip case). Here is a track listing:

----- 1. Back To School (Mini Maggit) 2. Feiticeira (Live) 3. Back to School (Live) 4. Lifter (Live) 5. Teething (Live) 6. Change (Acoustic) 7. Pink Maggit 8. White Pony EPK (Short Version, 8:32) -----

Songs 4 and 5 say that they were recorded in Chicago, but they were really recorded in Holland, and are the same versions that you will find featured on the Live [IMPORT] CD (Lifter), and the Back To School single (not EP, Teething). I hope this information was helpful. I know that it would have been for me when I was looking to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Back to School.......2001-03-31

I bought this CD along with adrenaline after witnessing the deftones playing with linkin park+taproot, for the b2s tour, and it was blinding, linkin park were great, they sounded amazing live, but the deftones completely eclipsed them, they are now my favourite band, and i own all their albums. Frankly, i'm not a big fan of back to school, it seems like an attempt to conform with the current trend of nu-metal songs, which is no good thing. It is a catchy melodic song, with chino doing an infectious rap for the verse, and the chourus is a speedier version of the end of pink maggit ("cause back in school..we are the leaders..." etc.). I preffered pink maggit, the song back to school is derived from, from the white pony album, thankfully its included with this EP. The live tracks, which make up the majority of this ep, are pretty good, its great to hear '7 words'(one of their best songs in my opinion)live. The highlight of this ep is definately the haunting accoustic version of 'change'. It takes one of the best songs from white pony and adds a whole new level to it. Also included is the bizarre 'white pony epk', which is a promo video for the entire white pony album. It is a cryptic film interlaced with the deftones performing some tracks from white pony.

I dont think back to school is a song the deftones should be promoting, it doesnt represent them fairly. If you are new to the deftones, get 'around the fur', it is possibly my favourite album ever.
