Album Description
Keyboardist and former member of Dream Theater, Derek Sherinian, has yet again joined plenty of first-rate musicians on his current album Blood of the Snake: Besides John Petrucci (Dream Theater), Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen and Simon Phillips (Toto), 80s rock icon Billy Idol and former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash feature as special all-star line-up. Blood of the Snake is composed of varied keyboard sounds, à la Sherinian, that cross freaky and slick guitar riffs of the guest guitarists. All in all, this album offers an amazing blend of cool fusion, progressive metal and straight-forward rock. Absolute highlights are Man With No Name, featuring Zakk Wylde on vocals, as well as The Monsoon with its teasing oriental influences and Phantom Shuffle that has somewhat of a jazzy touch. And not to forget the finely arranged cover version of Mungo Jerry's classic song In the Summertime featuring Billy Idol and Slash.

Sherinian is a master of his instrument.......2007-02-15
The Good
"Czar of Steel" is everything you've come to expect from a John Petrucci/Sherinian collaboration; funky effects heavy guitars and elaborate keyboard runs. Zakk Wylde brings along the heavy riffage as well as his throaty vocals on "Man with No Name." There's a beautiful string and piano section that breaks up the thunder. Emotional guitar bends dominate "Been There Before." They completely consume most of the song as the rest of the instruments come in for the emotional parts. Night Ranger's Brad Gillis helps compliment Wylde on this one. "Blood of the Snake" employs lots of progressive keyboard tones. Wylde provided the speedy yet steady riffs. Who could that be on lead guitar? There's no doubt that it's Yngwie J. Malmsteen playing that same damn A harmonic minor solo he plays on everything. "On the Moon" is a great marriage of cool saxophone and romantic piano. "The Monsoon" hits you just as hard as the actual storm would with Wylde and Malmsteen teaming up again for the guitar onslaught. For more of this dynamic duo's monstrous assault, be sure to catch "Viking Massacre."
The Bad
The cover of "In the Summertime" is so out of place with the rest of the album. It's not really a song that Billy Idol should be trying to pull off. They could have pumped it up a bit more instead of just the ending.
The Verdict
Blood of the Snake is another winner for Sherinian. Some instrumental albums get boring after a while, but not with any of his recently. Sherinian is a master of his instrument and brings in some of the best metal guitarist to blow the roof off of this puppy.
Under estimated talent at it's best !!!!!!!.......2006-11-11
This album again showcases this keyboardist's talents. What makes this recording different is the help he recruited. The likes of Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, former band mate John Petrucci, and the legendary Billy Idol are just the icing on the cake. This was the first time I have ever heard his recordings and I was BLOWN AWAY !!! The back-up artists embrace his talent( just listen to Track #8 where Wylde and Malmsteen trade licks). Even though Derek Sherinian is not a household name, the talent for playng the instrument should definetly be appreciated with this album.
6.5/10.......2006-10-19
Reviewgium - Volume I, issue X
Here is the latest offering from keyboardist Derek Sherinian, known primarily for his work with Dream Theater, and also for his work with such acts as KISS, Billy Idol, and Alice Cooper, as well as many side projects including Platypus and Planet X. This album, as his previous albums, features an impressive lineup of guest musicians. This time he has called upon the assistance of the ever-present Zakk Wylde, as well as Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, and interestingly Billy Idol and x-GN'R guitarist Slash.
Frankly, I think this album sounds really great, but is nothing genuinely spectacular. It is not too entirely different from anything else Sherinian has offered in the past, but it is still interesting, and has a certain level of diversity. The album starts off pretty formulaic, with the Sherinian-Petrucci duel of "Czar of Steel." (Before I read the liners, I actually thought it was Yngwie playing this track.) Atypical to his past endeavors, this album features some vocals, particularly "Man With No Name," sung by Zakk Wylde, and the cover of "In the Summertime," sung by Billy Idol with guitars by Slash. The former could easily be a Black Label Society song, and the latter is, well, odd: an unusual song to cover, and seems almost misplaced on the album. It is obviously a tongue-in-cheek addition to the album, with an old-timey-ragtime sound to it, and a bit of voice box thrown in, but it just does not seem to work, and I think the album would have been better off without the song. It seems to me to be a mere excuse to give Idol and Slash something to do since they are really not suited for Sherinian's usual brand of prog metal. Of course you get your typical shredding from Yngwie and Wylde on most tracks, but they still manage to keep things interesting throughout. A bit of sax-laden jazz fusion sneaks into the album on "Phantom Shuffle" and the mellow, groovy "On the Moon," the latter of which probably wins my vote for album highlight, though both of these songs are very good. "The Monsoon" is kind of a downer. It has an unusual and uncomfortable sound to it that I just cannot seem to appreciate. "Viking Massacre" makes up for it though: another album highlight, featuring a pounding rhythm section and a shredtacular Yngwie performance. Also on the album is the song "Been Here Before," an "alternate version" of the Dream Theater song "Anna Lee." Interesting.
As for my recommendation, if you are buying this album just for Billy Idol and/or Slash, one word: no. They only perform on "In the Summertime," and it's not even really a good song. If you are interested in a good instrumental album, well honestly, there is much better stuff to be found out there. On the other hand, if you like Sherinian's previous works, you will probably like this album. Black Utopia is probably still my favorite of his solo albums, but this one is not without its charm. Oh and also, the album cover is hot.
Very Poor, Spend Your $$ on Something Else........2006-09-11
I really liked Mythology and Black Utopia, though the engineering / mix on BU was poor. But this album is even worse. Musically it goes no where. Almost like he was trying to copy previous attempts but ran out of ideas. The "Featuring Billy Idol and Slash" thing is an absolute joke. Some how he got these guys to do an absolutely horrible version of In The Summertime. It's so bad it's hard to believe any one would put it on a CD other than to draw attention and sales from the names. Too bad, I had higher expectations from this guy.
The Dream Team.......2006-09-09
Derek Sherinian has managed to create what many us could only wish for: a "I wonder what 'x' and 'y' (and even 'z') would sound like playing..." Furthermore, we are finally BLESSED to listen to Yngwie play slightly different, but NEW (and amazing) licks! That right there is a dream come true. Blood of the Snake is an energetic and kick-butt album. Everyone on here: Zakk Wylde, Slash, Yngwie, Petrucci, Phillips, Billy Idol and the rest of the (long) crew sound pumped, resulting in an album with a Dream Team Band(s)! I Highly recommend it if you listen to these great musicians; or even as a taste tester!

Customer Reviews:
Ulvertronic.......2007-07-09
Despite the fact that Ulver displayed a notable penchant for flagrant genre hopping right from the get go, with the wildly oscillating _Bergtatt_, the stripped back acoustic folk of _Kvelldsanger_ and, most jarringly, the ear melting opening of hells gates on _Nattens Madrigal_, this is most likely where the rule book went out of the window and their apotheosis as experimental music titans was complete. Distilling the sound used to such effect on _Perdition City_, _Blood Inside_ sees Ulver completely, spectacularly break free of metal roots and create something almost without peer in modern music.
The nine songs presented here are dense, lush and intricately composed, neatly shunning predictability but retaining accessibility thanks to the gorgeously, blessedly clean vocals and their lilting, modern delivery. The music has an electronic base but integrates elements of jazz (slightly), rock (blistering rhythms and one guitar solo), atmosphere and ambience, and prog (insane out of place cod-classical keyboard solo, numerous other touches). the attention to detail is stunning and the lack of conventional structure actually adds to the strength of the songs: despite the uniform sound and dense production, the tracks are actually quite disparate, and the lack of predictability makes hearing each one like unwrapping another present.
Specifically, 'Dressed in Black' is a low key, deceptively melodic opener, showing off the full production and warped beats, especially about 3/4 of the way through when it opens up into a chaotic percussive section. 'For the Love of God' is a gem, and unclassifiable slice of eerire keyboard, surprisingly upbeat tones and vocals, and an unexpected guitar solo. Something about it evokes movement (perhaps on a train?). 'Christmas' is basically astounding, mixing classical samples with driving beats, an aggressive, upbeat style and heart wilitng crescendos later on (those wordless vocal harmonies!). The song is practically danceable, for crying out loud! 'Blinded by Blood' is my favourite, an epic textural journey, ornate in delivery, featuring choral parts and weird backwashing effects, creepy melodies and an atmosphere that reminds me of quiet church or crypt. The melody and delivery of the male vocals reminds me of Mike Patton, but overall I've never heard anything so beautiful. You get the picture then, although I should briefly single out 'Operator' which is an utterly insane journey through a speedy, almost rocking proggish dance-athon (???).
Ok, as I've subtly hinted at above then, I really like this album. I do believe it has a lot going for it. The songwriting is uniformly strong, the production a crystalline, technical wonder. The vocals are good and really add a lot to the music. The best feature though is that, despite the admittedly ambitious reach and scope of the record, every arow finds its target. That is, each miniature experiment works out well, even with the occasional bizzare out of place interludes, which work well in the overall scheme thanks to their jarring quality. One shouldn't really expect a band to be able to branch out in so many different directions at once so succsessfully, so Ulvers achievement here should not be taken lightly. The vague overall concept, which seems to be about hospital fear or Christianity (or both...I mean, sanity is out of the window by this stage) helps as well, keeping everything together without really intruding on matters. I'll wrap up now then, but this album is an experimental, accessible, delicate and delicious marvel, and I hope this review outlines why, to some extent. One thing is for sure: I used a lot of parentheses, for some reason.
Absolutely fantastic.......2007-06-04
For 25 years, I've selectively purchased and become familiar with hundreds(or thousand+ ?)of albums. Only a relatively small percentage of these have been enduringly satisfying. Ulver's Blood Inside astonishes me because I haven't become bored of it! It's still on my iPod Shuffle and I still relish it in its entirety after more than 100 hearings while I exercise.
Absolutely great!
Amazing!.......2007-04-03
This is the album that introduced me to this great band, and I can honestly say that I have never been more pleased with a purchase in my life!
What we have here is an amazingly unique fusion of electronica-prog. From the opening synths on the first track you immediately know something unusual is fixing to happen. Ulver successfully conqours amazing feats on 'Blood Inside'. Everything from electronic ambience, electronic classical, to absolutely terrifying sounds of hellish destruction is abundant in this masterpiece. Ulver's keen ear to dynamics is very rare to our lacking world of music. The amount of artistic expression and emotion that drenches this album is so completely stunning that I have a hard time picturing this band as a simple black-metal band. This is one of those albums that you cannot listen to one song, but you have to experience the album in its entireity.
To any music fan that enjoys an artistic, and avant-garde masterpiece, I strongly urge you to purchase this. Buy a bottle of wine, turn the lights of, light a candle, put 'Blood Inside' in your stereo and turn it up. I promise you will not regret this. I will soon buy the rest of Ulver's albums, even the black metal ones, because I am absoluely sure that a band with this magnitude of talent can do no wrong.
The Next Step Of Ulver.......2007-02-08
After a host of short and sweet electronic EP's, Ulver created one of their most enthralling works with 2005's "Blood Inside". Musically this is something of a return to a band format, encompassing the electronic style they have perfected with releases such as "Perdition City" and "Lyckantropen Themes", but introducing some more traditional instruments and song writing. While this may put off some of the exclusively electronic fans, I believe this is an excellent step forward and a great new evolution for the band.
The album is visually and thematically very interesting. The white and red cover art continues the mysterious and minimalist art the band usually opts for, this time giving a somewhat hospital and health vibe. And this is certainly a major theme to the album, with the word blood cropping up in both the album's title and in the song "Blinded By Blood", and hinted at with "In The Red". Promo pics of the band on their website (note that there are no band photos in the glossy and minimalist liner notes, another constant aspect to the enigmatic Ulver styling) shows the band dressed up in surgical attire holding bloody knives.
So the vibes are definitely bloody, hospitalised and surgical ones, but that isn't the only theme to the lyrics. There is a lot of mention of God, songs such as "For The Love of God" combine this with the blood theme - "going down faster than the light / blood of the God word spoken in tongues / that we see the end". In the song "Christmas" more references to God are made - "A God is born and others die...A new God is a word - or the mere sound / don't seek and don't trust, for all is mystery". To me, such lyrics are condemning the glorification or God, giving a general theme that beliefs are dangerous, and God cannot stop atrocities and death. And this is where I believe the hospital theme links in, emphasised by the song "In The Red" which parallels the role of a hospital to God, moving from birth - "Out of nature / something bloody / a body" - to the hospital - "In need of help / a heart / taken away for a moment / ambulance / hospital doors open / a great white". This seems to be pinnacle of the themes presented, the combination and conflict between nature (God) and man (the hospital). Of course I may be way off here, but this is my interpretation of an interesting and intriguing theme.
As for the music, well it's hard to really explain properly, due to its diverse nature. There are those lovely atmospheric and moody overtones that Ulver execute so perfectly, but there are also more traditional instruments playing a larger role than I expected. The songs also follow a more traditional structuring, with some having distinct verse and chorus patterns. This does not mean the album is accessible, or "pop", or "selling-out". This is still strictly Ulver - dark, brooding, atmospheric, melodic and extremely addictive. My personal favorites would have to be "Christmas" which has a lovely winter feel to it and some of Garm's best vocals on the album. "It Is Not Sound" which displays perfectly the new style fusing the electronic and traditional elements perfectly, and the very moody "Your Call" which is one of Ulver's most unsettling and glorious songs to date.
A fan of Ulver's electronic works should not be disappointed here. Yes, the band has changed their sound a little, but this shouldn't be a surprise, after all, this is the same band that created one of the heaviest and downright ferocious black metal albums ever made ("Nattens Madrigal"). For new fans of the band, I think this would be a very nice place to start, as it encompasses everything I love about their music.
Painfully, wonderfully, disturbing............2006-09-02
This album feels so dreamy, as layered like a wedding cake, simultaniously relaxing and disturbing. I don't know if i'm the only one, but when listening to "Blinded by Blood" I feel as though I'm dying, everything hushed and I can't feel a thing. I've never really had a song elicit such a strong sense of nausiation.

Beautiful music........2007-01-10
I sat back with the lights dimmed and a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed the beautiful haunting music of years gone by. Memories abound.
5 stars for performance, 4 stars due to omissions.......2006-08-29
Why doesn't this get a perfect five stars?
Simple reason.
The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.
On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.
Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.
Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.
Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.
Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)
Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)
I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.
Much thanks to producers David Wishart, Eric Tomlinson and James Fitzpatrick and recording engineers Mike Ross-Trevor, John Luard Timperley and Jan Holzner for contributing to these fine historical film music recordings.
"Hammer & Silva...raises the hair on the back of your neck".......2002-04-09
Silva Screen takes us on tour through the castles of Transylvania with a collection of
outstanding scores from James Bernard on Disc One ~ "DRACULA" (1958)..."KISS OF
THE VAMPIRE" (1964)..."DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS"
(1966)..."FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN" (1967)..."THE DEVIL RIDES OUT"
(1968)..."DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE" (1968)..."THE SCARS OF
DRACULA" (1970)..."TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA" (1970)...even though the
blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!
Let's look at Disc Two with the other Hammer themes and their composers ~ "THE
ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN" (1957-Humphrey Searle)..."QUATERMASS II"
(1957-James Bernard)..."CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF" (1960-Benjamin
Frankel)..."CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB" (1964-Carlo Martelli)..."SHE"
(1965-James Bernard)..."ONE MILLION YEARS B.C." (1966-Mario
Nascimbene)..."WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH" (1969-Mario
Nascimbene)..."HANDS OF THE RIPPER" (1971-Christopher Gunning)..."VAMPIRE
CIRCUS" (1971-David Whitaker)..."VAMPIRE HUNTER" (2000-James
Bernard)...difficult as it may be, there is a stand out ~ "THE CURSE OF THE
WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.
Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.
Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da
Silva (executive producer), David Stoner (associate producer), Gareth Williams (Dolby
Surround/HDCD Mastering) and of course James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), who
has the knack of developing quality in every Silva Screen release...similar to "A History Of
Horror:From Nosferatu To The Sixth Sense" (SSD-1111/2CD Set), guaranteed to raise the
hair on the back of your neck!
Total Time: Disc One 68:01 on 14 Tracks & Disc Two 68:46 on 14 Tracks ~ Silva Screen

Album Description
Am I Blood picks up where metallica's black album left off so many years ago bringing an amazing sense of attitude and a sound that will absolutely blow you away when you hear it. Janne's vocals are superbly done flowing with the intricate guitar workings that take place throughout the album's length. Blazing solo's pick up where that leaves off with an intense barrage of metal riffing equaled by very few. It's an incredible album to hear.
Customer Reviews:
I'm quite sick of the "Metallica"-Comparism.......2005-07-24
I've never heard Metallica play this style of Metal. They certainly are influenced by Metallica. The Vocalist sound like the younger James Hetfield. And they also have a strong Thrash-, as well as a strong Rock-basis, just like Metallica. but then again, it sounds more like a Metalband you'd expect from Finnland. There's also a lot of typical finnish Gothic Metal in here. So, you're better of comparing them to bands, like Sentenced. And they are really good. There are only 2 or 3 songs, that I would describe as mediocre, so I'll only give this album 4 stars. But tracks like "The Saddest grief", "Struggle In Dissarray", "The One Who Forgives Me", "Collaps Of ritual Belief", "Painful Ignorance", "Nothig Realistic" or "Lies Worte Mysteries" are just great. A mixture of moderate Thrash, modern Hard Rock and finnish Gothic Metal. Some great Riffs, very catchy refrains, interesting songstructures, wonderful harmonies, good solos - it's all in there. This album is also way better than their previous efford, "Agitaion". The songwriting has improved a lot, and all the industrial stuff is gone. It just rocks a lot more. It's really a pity, that you'll have such a hard time aquiring this album. They a victims of some strange label-policy, and also get underestimated a lot by this neverending comparism to Metallica. This is no Metallica-Rip Off! They have their own, very unique style. I'm into Heavy Metal for 17 years now. I've heard a lot, and it's not easy to impress me. But all I can say about this band is, that there are a lot of moments on this album, where they are really great. I love this album. If you like albums, like "The Funeral Album" by Sentenced or "Draconian Times" by Paradise Lost, just listen to it. And listen to it closely, maybe several times. I'm sure, you will like it.
Great.......2002-11-27
A great cd. Tired of the new metallica and are looking for older stuff get this cd. Their first one is better though, so if you can find that get it first.
The only thing saving metal........2002-08-31
Every song on this album is a reminder of how rock and metal used to be. Everyone remembers the good old days of Metallica, and then they changed on everybody. I've been listening to Am I Blood for a few years now, and they contain the heavy metal spirit. Track after track of blazing riffs, each song better than the last one. Buy this album, you won't regret it.
