4 out of 5 stars 70' style hard rock with a light touch.......2007-04-25

There are some conditions for anyone to try and like this CD. First, you have to get used to Justin Hawkins singing which can go from a normal decent rock voice one second to sounding like he's just lopped off his babymaker with a knife the next second. On first listen I didn't think I would get used to it, but I did and now it doesn't bother me. Second, you have to like 70's hard rock bands like Aerosmith, AC/DC, Foghat, KISS, Cheap Trick, etc., because that's the style of music The Darkness play. I grew up on these bands so was thrilled to hear some good melodic guitar riffs and solos. Third, lighten up. These are not songs with messages. They are 3 or 4 minutes of loud guitar, overblown rock n' roll vocals and cheesy lyrics probably written while drunk. The Darkness are not a great band but they wrote some fun songs to listen to that will get your head bobbing and feet tapping.

4 out of 5 stars Hello, Darkness..........2007-01-18

If you liked the smash hit "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" then in all likelihood, you'll enjoy this album. The Darkness' debut is filled with catchy melodies, supported by loud rock guitars and enough high-pitched wailing to make David Lee Roth proud. "Love On The Rocks" and "Black Shuck" feature the band at their rock zenith, while "Friday Night" and "Holding My Own" show that ballads can in fact still rock. A must-own for anyone who kneels at the altar of '70's Classic Rock, or else anyone who can appreciate loud, sleazy guitars alongside lead singers with the same attributes.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Rock Makes A Comeback.......2007-01-09

For those of you not familiar with The Darkness the band burst on to the scene in England in 2003 becoming a stadium level act almost overnight. Their sound takes a heaping dose of 70's glam rock with a pile of 80's hair metal and adds a bit of Queen influence to come up with their over the top version of classic rock for the new millennium. The album did not make nearly as much of a splash in the US although the single "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" did get some limited airplay. So, after reading all the hype about these guys in Europe I had to pick up the album to see what all the fuss was about. So does it live up to the hype? Well......yes and no. I would not say that this is a great album, but I have to give it props in that the songs are catchy as hell, the riffs are solid and well...the album just rocks. The Darkness are not really doing anything new. Their sound is derived from many bands that came before them that many darkness fans may be too young to remember. It is basic classic rock all the way with Justin Hawkins unique vocals on top of it all. Still it is a formula that works for the most part and I find this album very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like Queen!!! Original and excellent!.......2006-10-16

Firstly, this band is nothing like Queen. They were sent to give us some old time, good, original Rock and Roll.

This album is amazing. The scorching guitar solos, pounding rhythm section and shrill, powerful singing shows intelligence and originality. Don't listen to people who have nothing else to whine about. This beats all of today's boring, dull music with no talent musicians and boring, cheesy lyrics. Buy this and let it add a bit of colour to your life.
The Darkness, Oasis, and, last but by no means least, the Scissor Sisters are out to save the music industry. Don't knock 'em till you've tried 'em.

Oh, and BUY!

3 out of 5 stars Permission granted chaps - a hearty 3.5 stars.......2006-09-06

Yeah OK the hype worked on me. Just had to check out the story. And to tell the truth the story ain't half bad. Musically these guys are solid enough, the opener Black Shuck gridning out a riff that's as good as anything else going around and the song itself is charmingly incomprehensible until you find out the story behind it. Other tracks such as Get Your Hands Off My Woman clip along nicely, not overstaying their welcome. Sometimes it doesn't work out as well such as tracks like Holding My Own and Friday Night which are fairly forgettable.

The band seem quite tight and not afraid to show their influences such as Queen and other 70's eccentricities. But they also bring a fresh version of their idols to the table such as the slightly funky Stuck in a Rut and the deliberately ridiculous Love On the Rocks With no Ice. This quite deliberate humour also sets these boys apart from their peers - for some time prior to it's release the whole hard rock/heavy metal scene had so little of it. Of couse Euro metal bands were happy to play around, but UK bands and especially US bands seemed incapable of imparting any sense of fun unless it was grudginly offered under layers of irony.

So musically pretty good stuff, light hearted in attitude and with a decent production job and individualistic cover - no wonder this thing sold.

But - and there is a but. Many fans will be turned off by the vox of Justin Hawkins. Now I like the effect he's able to do with his voice, like a bloke with his wedding tackle in a vice, but why do it every song? Sure it's their signature sound but when you have a special weapon you bring it out for special occasions. Not beat yo audience over the head with it every time. So to listen to this album from one end to the other may not be the easiest thing to do.

If you like your hard rock with a nod to the past and with a big grin on it's face then snap this up. Almost three years after it's release it's videos are still in decent rotation and that says something for the bands skill at capturing a decent melody within a hard rock framework.

They are the British Waltham. This CD rocks from start to finish. I've been listening to it everyday and I can't get it out of my head. I really think you should buy this CD. It will make you feel good. Promise.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2003-09-06

one of the best albums of the year - played it nonstop all weekend and havnt got bored of one song. a must have.

3 out of 5 stars There's nothing dark about The Darkness.......2003-09-02

The Darkness seem to be jumping on this trend of 70's inspired rock, eg, Kings Of Leon, The Music, The Libertines, and to a certain extend BRMC. It's funny how people throw around descriptions like garage rock, when it's basically an updated term for 'classic rock with riffs'. There's a bit of The Rolling Stones and AC/DC in The Darkness' sound. But they actually remind me more of 70's stadium rockers Foreigner, especially the vocals. This kind of music was never meant to be critiqued by hack journalists, but to have the volume cranked-up in your car. Trying to analyze this is like dissecting Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, or Aerosmith...this stuff was designed to be blasted by speakers in your basement. It's just rock and roll. Nothing more nothing less.

5 out of 5 stars AT LAST!!!!!.......2003-08-31

A good album from an english band, although it's 70's cheese, it's good solid rock music at's it best with good melody and amusing vocals, can't wait for the follow up!

4 out of 5 stars A-W-E-S-O-M-E.......2003-08-30

The cd "Permission to Land" by The Darkness is excellent. Its a must in any rockers collection. THe Darkness is one of the next big things to hit the world! They are a unique, amazing, and incredibly fun band. I saw them at the REading Festival in Reading, England, and they were awesome live. They have won awards for Best New Cd and best live show. Liek I said, this is a MUST HAVE CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD. Ever.......2004-05-11

All hail the saviors of rock and roll! At metal's worst point in history, The Darkness save the world with pure arena rock. No, it's not fused with nu metal like Motley Crue does now. It's just pure arena rock in the form of AC/DC, Queen, and Def Leppard. I just can't believe the power of these songs. I will show you my opinion on them here.

Black Shuck: A catchy, evil-sounding number with pure rock power.

Get Your Hands Off My Woman: An unbelievably rock song.

Growing On Me: Quite possibly the best song on the album.

I Believe In A Thing Called Love: The big hit off the album, with AC/DC-esque guitars.

Love Is Only A Feeling: One of the best power ballads ever. I love it.

Givin' Up: A great catchy, arena rock song.

Stuck In A Rut: A churning metal song.

Friday Night: A Thin Lizzy-sounding semi-ballad.

Love On The Rocks With No Ice: The heaviest song on the album, with roaring guitars and vocals.

Holding My Own: Another ballad, with great lyrics and great power.

This is overall the best album ever released. I think it can single handedly reverse the course of 2000's metal. If you are a metalhead, you must own this.

***This is a review of the EDITED VERSION***

So far, this is my fave album of 2004. I enjoy the Darkness' tribute to 70's and 80's glam rock. I heard a lot of buzz abouth these guys last year--even Jack Black saying that they were one of his faves. I first heard them when Growing on Me was featured on the School of Rock soundtrack. I laughed when I first saw the I believe in a thing called love video. Justin Hawkins' look was so pricelessly glam--especially the floral tiara. What a hoot!

I really enjoy their rocking sound. I also really appreciate their releasing a tweaked clean version for guys like me who dont want all that cussin' (or is that shucking fit?). I like the fact that they changed the lyrics instead of blanking them out a-la-Blink 182, although that's okay too. This album is very much recommended. Enjoy!

Well, i bought this albulm off a whim.Stop One night while watching MTV i saw a "Buzzworthy" dealio on the darkness. Stop I first blew it off, as a "well, that was stupid." stop. I then saw the full version, and after listing to the guitar riff close to the end, i fell in love with them. Stop being, thirteen, my dad freaks out when all they can say is "Well ____ That." Stop so, i bought the edited version. Stop They are one of those bands that you need to "get". Stop They are supposed to be stupid blatent ripoffs, so get over it and stop whining. Stop The guitar is awsome. stop The only song i skip is "Love on the rocks with no ice. Stop Buy it. stop That is all.

1 out of 5 stars oh no!.......2004-03-09

is this a copy of VAN HALEN's David "diamond" Lee Roth or Brian Johnson's AC/DC? from the first tune you will know that the man who becomes a singer, is an idiot!
My advice:
go & listen to the legendary hard rock classic bands such as Deep purple, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, King Crimson, ELP, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Genesis.....they will not ever be forgotten in the next 50 years, but who will still remember the DARKNESS in the next 3 years??

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, Pure Genius.......2004-02-03

This is so cool, words cannot describe, this is the first band in over 2 decades to really capture my intrest. I Believe In a Thing called Love is an awesome song. I luv it. 2 monkeys up.

justin hawkins the squeaky "ballsy" turpid singer and cheese grater
and his brother wow what a new thing to rock to have your brother in a band with you [hmmm maybe they share hair-spray and tips on how to apply make-up and still look masucline any thought?]
the darkness exploded onto the rock mainstream after the failed single "i believe in a thing called love] was released and failed to chart over in this chopping island i live in england i think it stalled at number 39 well it's an odd number so what do you expect..to be taken seriously oh yeah the darkness don't
no change there for me then
so by the summer the new single "growing on me" or what it's called and this time they give us a treat in the shape of an promotional video show-casing the talents and "beauty" of the darkness you got to see them in all their "glory" "retches"
i was so disgusted when my eyes laid on that video
first of all the horrendous catsuit yeah it worked for freddie
mercury because he had balls[hawkins i'm afraid you don't]
      then darkness mania started a'comin'
the re-treads of the eighties spandex and cheese balls getting lodged in your throat and the thoughts of the decade so rightly fogotten yeah the darkness were hell bent on makin' us remembered
in hideous fashion they were determined to serve us the meat and potatoes that was truly missing from rock for nearly 20 years no justin it's because rock got rid of that era when kurdt donald cobain decided to plug in a guitar and blow of them permed wigs that most bands wore to get "massive" hair so stupid even brian may would laugh...
justin hawkins has quoted saying that the darkness are queen and ac/dc joined together in gay rock marriage god forbide if that ever happen they wouldn't of sounded like this ragsack of non- formulated grabage
the darkness has said don't take them seriously so lets foget and then i can get rid of the picture of hawkins horrendous face and teeth[i surmise that dental hyigene is not at the top of hawkins list eh?]
and don't get me started on the christmas single "christmas time[don't let the bells end" please do..
in a year the darkness will be forgetten with the other pile of washed up eighties hair mettallers tryin' to bring back a genre that never really started in the first place

      4 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2004-08-10

We're supposed to take them seriously, but the lyrics to "Get Your Hands Off My Woman" makes that impossible. They are fresh, funny, catchy, if you like 80's metal you'll love this.

1 out of 5 stars Queen Pisstake? Most definitately!.......2005-09-12

I largely agree with Nick. These Darkness dudes should really stop taking the piss. Queen were a fine band in their time and it's sad to see such irreverance shown by this new batch of rockers! "Permission to Land" is not grossly bad (by today's standards) but the boys need to invent a style of their own to stop being compared (and found lacking) with their elders and betters! That aside, 8 tracks of Justin vocals back to back is just a bit too much to take in one sitting to be honest. It would've been interesting to intersperse the album with the other guys taking turns at vocals to relieve the monotany. I hope for their own sakes they can be more inventive with their next effort - or the Darkness are doomed! Nice one Nick!

1 out of 5 stars Permission to speak.......2005-08-11

I know I will be unfashionable for saying so but I have just listened to "Permision to Land" and have to say that The Darkness are on overrated HM band who sound so much like countless other HM bands from the 70s & 80s (many of them now long forgotten).

Yes, there is a passing resemblence to Queen but why would anyone want to listen to The Darkness when they could listen to the real thing instead? The songs on "Permision to Land" are indistinguishable pure throwaway HM that will never be remembered in 5-10 years time - unlike those of Queen - with poor quality lyrics seemingly reliant on four letter explitives for effect.

I hate this album every time I bother to give it a listen. Why don't the new generation of bands come up with something new instead of endlessley recyling all this old trousers? I remember a time when heavy prog bands (whom the darkness are trying to emulate on this debut album) would try and experiment. Unfortunately, I do not see any of this happening these days. I seriously fear for the future of rock & roll if new bands can't succeed in being a bit more original!
