Customer Reviews:
Great collection of Scott Joplin's piano rags.......2007-08-02
John Arpin delivers excellent performances of Joplin's rags. Not too much interpretation and not a flat presentation exhibited by piano rolls. Perfect for me. I believe Arpin has truly captured Joplin's essence.
The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08
John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.
Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31
Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.
Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?
Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.
One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.
While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.
complete piano music of Scott Joplin on 4 CD's.......2007-02-14
Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.
Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09
This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.

The search for solace involves a difficult reconciliation of conflicting emotions, pitting one's need to grieve at odds with a heavy-hearted realization that life, however diminished, must go on. Using an audio palette of grays and dark blues, Michael Hoppe offers Solace as a balm for the soul during such times, "where the dark clouds in life give way to the glow of eternal hope and peace." The clouds never fully lift during the 12 tracks of Solace, which appear to progress in a stages-of-mourning manner. The effect can be moving, even lovely (particularly the grand orchestral opener, "The Majestic Land," one of four splendid selections involving the Prague Symphony -- recorded remotely via an Internet link, of all things). The prevailing mood is melancholy but not quite maudlin; two angelic arias ("Pie Jesu," which Hoppe had written for the memorial service of his wife's mother, and "Lachrymosa") are tearless, reverent expressions that aspire to the divine. The closing moment of "The Parting," a retooled but otherwise ordinary composition from 1986 that involves Vangelis, finally yields a sense of closure. For those in a state of bereavement, Hoppe's Solace may offer you comfort. --Terry Wood

Inspirational.......2007-01-16
First track could be a county's anthem, very nicely performed. The remainder of album is inspiring, and much like Hoppe's other works.
Gorgeous Music to Work and Meditate to.......2006-10-19
I am seldom so overwhelmed with the beauty of a piece of music that I'm moved to tears. This does just that to me. Each track is as meaningful and beautiful wrought. Powerful stuff.
Heartbreakingly Beautiful.......2006-09-16
Michael Hoppe is a treasure. From his earliest recordings until his latest, Requiem, I have never been disappointed. Solace does not have one track that you will skip over. The soloists, where there are vocals, are superb and speak straight to the heart. Occasionally we are given a musical gift that lasts us a lifetime. This is one of those gifts.

A New Age Gem.......2005-09-05
This is a beautiful collection of New Age music that should please fans of the genre. Perfect for listening alone or with others. The music is soothing at times, but at others, is fervent and burning.
The first piece of this recording ("The Majestic Land") is like a throwback to "The Big Country." This being my first impression, I thought every other piece was going to sound like movie soundtracks. But no, the second piece proved me wrong. "So You" was like an unworded song of love, eternity, and promise. By the time of the third piece, you'll be burning with the passion and desire of the strings in "Romance for Violin and Orchestra." The pieces afterwards more or less delve into that rich and sometimes otherworldly territory that is New Age, reaching again into a certain height with "Jude's Theme" and "Nimbus," then coming into a prayerful respite in "Pie Jesu." These pieces are what really make up the theme of "Solace."
The last piece called "The Parting," is a very good piece for dispersing all that left-over burden we accumulated in a day's time. The first time I heard it, and afterwards, I felt like I was in the calm, sunny waters of the Greek sea, and swimming among majestic whales!
There is something for everyone in this recording. Solace does not necessarily mean to be alone, and the music here proves that it can be listened to in the solace of lovers, or a dear friend.
Fly.......2004-03-06
Fly away through the sky and let your imagination get a way from materialistic life. This CD is very Relaxing and Soothing especially when you listen to it outside maybe in the park. Have a nice time.

Mostly Majestic.......2007-05-17
Most of the tracks were excellent but some were a bit long winded.Tracks by Spencer Wyatt best on the disc and made it all worth while.
An excellent olio of music styles.......2007-02-23
Do you like ethereal New Age? Gotcha covered. Does Boogie piano get your toes a-tappin'? Check. Is Swing more your thing? It's here. All fine reasons to add this sound track to your music collection. As for the movie, I like to think it Carrey's best work. The man has the most expressive face in Moviedom. Regarding the story, it's set in the early Fifties during the rabid Communist scaremongering headed by Senator Joseph McCarthy. One result was the blacklisting of suspected Communists and sympathizers in liberal Hollywood, of which our protagonist Peter Appleton became a victim.
This movie is a slam dunk.......2006-10-29
To hear the roar of the crowd as the player goes in to slam dunk the basketball in the professional sports arenas, this film equals those thrills for the audience as Jim Carrey (Luke Trimble)takes us through the mind of someone that has amnesia and unwittingly becomes the hometown war hero set in 1945 period. Stars abound in this film like character actors Martin Landau and James Wittemore.Boy meets girl, they fall in love, then a twist in the plot as Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is accused of being a communist, similar to the Army McCarthy hearings for those old enough to remember. It all turns out like everyone wants.....Ed Lynch 10/29/06
Boogie Majestic.......2003-08-07
This soundtrack is the best soundtrack I have heard in a long time. Bringing the swing big band music was fantastic.I wish they would have included Pennsylvania 6-5000 in the soundtrack though. This by far is the best movie soundtrack next to Swing Kids. So buy this soundtrack. This is real music.
An answer for a question from Texas.......2003-02-15
Music fan from Texas, Yes both songs are there and as strange as it may sound, those where the two songs that cought my attention when I saw the movie. The one with the clarinet is called "Stranger on the shore" while the one with the piano is called "Boogie Woogie Stomp" I believe. The soundtrack as a whole is flawless and I strongly reccomend it.

Customer Reviews:
Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21
Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.
A classic compilation.......2006-10-07
This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)
This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)
A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)
For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.
A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01
Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.
The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.
This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.
This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.
Unique .......2004-10-19
I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.
Great set.......2001-10-16
I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.
I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!
I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.
Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

Customer Reviews:
A real gem of the 80's.......2005-10-31
If you haven't heard of Black n Blue, consider that Gene Simmons produced some of their albums, John Kalodner says he still doesn't get why they were not huge, and Bruce Fairbain got the job of working on Slippery When Wet because Jon Bon Jovi loved his work with this band. It's classic 80's hard rock, on the Bon Jovi/Poison side of the tracks, and this box contains four albums, each in a cardboard sleeve that replicates the original album cover ( but let's not kid ourselves, it's done like this to be cheap ), and a DVD of a live performance, which obviously is still VHS quality, but at least it's not going to wear out. There's also one booklet, which talks about the different albums, and it's all in a cardboard box. Overall, I think the quality of presentation is not great, but it's worth it to own these classic albums, and in the end, who cares what the box looks like - the music rocks.

Putting it in the wrong order?.......2007-07-12
I agree with others here that this is probably Pat Traver's best effort. Just wanted to mention that on my copy of this disc the songs are in a completely different order than they are coded on the disc. The disc is coded in the order the songs appear on the cover, but this is not the actual song order on the disc. Be aware that if you rip this disc to your computer you will have to manually rename the files to..ahem..."Put them straight".
Actual song order on the disc = How the disc is coded:
01 Life in London = Life in London
02 It Ain't What It Seems = Gettin' Betta
03 Speakeasy = Runnin' from the Future
04 Runnin' from the Future = It Ain't what it Seems
05 Lovin' You = Off Beat Ride
06 Off Beat Ride = Lovin' You
07 Gettin' Betta = Dedication
08 Dedication = Speakeasy
Kind of sloppy execution, if you ask me. Oh well, still a great disc. Buy it!
great album, lousy cd.......2007-05-13
this was one of my favorite albums about 30 years ago. it had a sonic impact that was kind of fresh. i've been looking for it on cd ever since cd's were invented, and could never find it. so i was really excited to find it on amazon. and really disappointed when i listened to it. sound quality is the worst i've heard on digital.
pat travers appeal was his musicianship, this isn't punk rock. this is like trying to enjoy "kind of blue" on a tinny sounding AM radio.
i still give it 3 stars, just for the music. you can't find these songs anywhere else, and the album is a masterpiece. somebody, please, do a state of the art digital remaster of this recording. it deserves it!
Quintessential Pat Travers.......2005-11-18
I recently bought this CD after listening to cassette copies that I made off the original LP for many years. After wearing out both the record and the Cassette(s) I was thrilled to see it re-released on CD. I have seen PT several times live and have always thought this was his best stuff. I played guitar in a rock band during the late seventies and Pat's tunes were a refreshing addition to our set lists. We just loved jamming on "Gettin' Betta", "Life in London", and other Pat Travers songs. He is truly one of the great all-time rockers and IMHO this is his best. Every track is great!
As an aside, I have great seats to see him at our local venue here in Annapolis, MD (Ram's Head Tavern) on November 28, 2005. I will be about 20 feet from the stage and can't wait!
The Ultimate Pat Travers Album.......2004-05-12
27 years, have I've been spinning this album. I've went through three vinyl copies & have a Japanese import CD, now I also have a double album CD which "Heat in the Street" is also included. It maybe redundant at this point to say that "Putting it Straight" is not just my favorite PT album, but my favorite album of all time! It still sounds as everybit fresh today as the day I popped it on my record player, so many years ago.
"Putting it Straight" starts off with the speeding mammoth, shiny metallic freight train that is "Life in London." PT's last word on the punk scene that was consuming London at the time. Fast, hard, & metallic, "Life in London" is a juggernaut stomping on the lifeless corpse that punk would be in a couple of years. The second & third songs, "It Aint What it Seems" & "Speakeasy," are rollicking guitar riff driven tunes that speak of goodtimes & bad. "Running from the Future" (my favorite song off the album) is a monster of Jazzy metal heaviness with guitar breaks that bring tears to my eyes. The sound he gets out of his guitar is just incredible on this song & the album as a whole, truely unique. "Running from the Future's" subject is also as forboding as it is heavy. PT speaking of his drug use, knowing it will lead to nowhere. "Lovin' You" is a keyboard driven song of love & regret. The funky instrumental "Off Beat Ride" demonstrates PT's fusion side not unlike Jeff Beck's "Wired," it also shows PT's considerable keyboard talents. The giant funky metallic riffery & time changes of "Gettin' Betta" is a immortal PT classic. It draws you in like a set of white water rapids, full of bumps & grinds, you have to hang on! The last song, "Dedication" is gorgeous. It's melody takes you away. It's lryics about friendship & kindness are truly heart-felt & warm. There is no doubt that PT knows how to write important personal songs of life & how to live it, a masterpiece.
This is the last album to feature the tremendous drumming of future Iron Maiden drummer Niko McBrain. Next would be Tommy Aldridge!
5/5
Pedal To The Metal.......2004-02-14
I bought this album upon it's release in 1977. This is undoubtly his best effort. I saw Pat Travers in 1977 at Will Rogers auditorium in Fort Worth Texas. This is a small venue that holds about 4000 people and he blew the roof off this place. So glad to see it finally released on CD. This album is unlike Radio Active or Heat In The Street and has not aged one bit. It is more funked up with a touch of jazz to it. There is not one bad track on it. If you don't have this cd GET IT! You will not be sorry.

pretty good but DEFINITELY no "No World Order".......2007-04-10
Gamma Ray is probably one of my favorite bands and I would have to say as far as power metal goes, it's right between them and Hanson's old band Helloween as far as who is superior. I think this is quite an enjoyable CD but there's something missing from it. Gamma Ray's previous release, "No World Order" absolutely blew me away and almost every song on there was classic power metal in my opinion. However, on this album I have to say there are numerous good songs but I can't say that there's any real classics on here. Kai Hanson is absolutely one of the geniuses in metal and boy I really wish the U.S. realized this, but they never will because power metal is considered "uncool" here which is a shame, especially for Gamma Ray because no offense to any of the other power metal bands, Gamma Ray definitely has more edge to them. Oh well.
In conclusion, this is a good, solid album, it just isn't mindblowing like "No World Order" but regardless, KEEP ON ROCKING KAI!!!!
Majestic review.......2006-08-07
This CD is the best! If you don't know Gamma Ray, this is the CD to get! Pay special attention to "Fight" and "Revelation." This band is why Metal is still cool!
Masters of power metal!!!!.......2006-07-17
For me this is their best album, in metal-rules.com it is ranked in #3 in their "TOP OF 2005" list...., the only song I don't like is Majesty...it seems out of place...breaks the armony of the album.
Never saw it coming!.......2006-05-28
I have to agree...this album is so amazing. Some new influences and different aproaches can be heard on this album. Judas Priest and Black Sabbath came to my mind when I first listened to it. But without losing their power metal touch...this band can show that metal today is still strong as it was back in the day!
Excellent Job for Gammaray! Power Vocals and Power Sound!.......2006-05-04
Gammaray has made another great album. Despite of the lack of the "traditional" intro for the first song, most songs have a great intro and go through smart progressions which make this a versatile album. I have to admit that I didn't like a couple of songs in this album, but the rest of the songs are excellent.
Here is my view on the content of this album:
My Temple - Has no intro - but its fast and well written.
Fight - probably the best song of this album - if you didn't like it at first listen to it again. It has very nice riffs and fast drumming. It also carries a great message of hope and motivation. This is pure Gammaray.
Strange World - this song is another one of my favorites, and is very reminiscent of early Helloween due to the various changes and the dual lead guitars parts. The lyrics are very good and change in style throughout the song.
Hell is Thy Home - as someone else mentioned its lyrics are too hellish, but the guitar riffs make up for it.
Blood Religion - Has a great intro and it's written to tell a great story. This song should be included in a Horror Film Compilation Album - along with Sonata Artica's song "Wolf and Raven"!
Condemned to Hell - It has a jazzy intro - which I don't like much. The Chorus is hellishly excellent.
Spiritual Dictator - Another best for this album - similar to Fight, it includes the typical Gammaray arsenal of sound and speed.
Majesty - Also a jazzy intro - but it changes after 30 seconds - However I think Condemned to Hell ended up a little better than this one, particularly because the chorus is slow.
How Long - This is the slow song of this album, so it definitely stands out.
Revelation - Very nice intro and follow up. This song makes it worthwhile to listen to this album all the way to then end. Furthermore, it contains some of the best lyrics of this album.
Overall, if it wasn't for songs #4 and #8, this would be an instant classic. The other 8 songs on this album still merit excellent recommendation to buy, hence the 5 stars.
Please give me some feedback if you disagree with my rating.

"Lost" Songs Are Still Very Welcome!.......2007-06-02
My review is actually 4 1/2 stars. First of all, the quality of the recordings here sound nothing like "demos". With the exception of the one song from 1982, they are all very good. The newest songs (from 1987), take the band on a direction they wanted to go instead of what ended up on "Big Bang" (I wish they'd stop apologizing for that awesome cd). Those two newest songs, however, are not so hard that you can't tell that the band was just maturing. They sound like part Pyromania-era Def Leppard, with some kind of Krokus/Helix sound mixed in. The majority of the songs were written just pre and post "Rock Ain't Dead" -era. That CD ranks as one of my top 5 of all time, so as I listen to the songs that didn't make the cut, I tend to agree. Which is not to say that they're bad, they are all very good, one of them "Keep On Beleiving" is a classic, which should have made "Rock Ain't Dead"
So....if you are a Heavy Pettin fan, you won't be disappointed with this collection, 10 times better than most bands' "demos" that come out years after the band breaks up. If you are not a "Pettin" fan, this is just some great rock that you will love.
By the way, I also own the ultra-rare "Demos '98" CD from the band, but sadly have no story about how it fits into the band's history. If anyone knows, please drop me a line.
Very Interesting.......2007-05-28
I love this collection of previously unreleased material for a number of reasons. First, there's evidence of a fine rock band here that had it given the chance of directing its own future would have went all the way to the top. Secondly, because there is more of all the band's influences on this album than on their released material. Thirdly, the track 'My Love For You' is absolutely AOR at its best. Rock on lads.
Heavy Pettin Prodigal Songs is GREAT!.......2007-05-06
This is the finest collection of never released songs from a hard rock band that I have heard in a long time. The music is a little bit on the heavier side than their previously released material of 20+ years ago. Although these "newer" songs were recorded 20+ years ago, they sound new and fresh like the band has just recorded and released a brand new album. The songs really don't sound dated at all, as hard rock and heavy metal are making a true comeback with bands reforming and playing with the old school rock and roll sound of the 1980's but updated just a bit for the 21st century. These bands include Heavy Pettin, of course, Krokus, Judas Priest, and many others.
Buy this cd, as I think that you will find it surprisingly different and heavier than most of their previously released stuff. You won't be disappointed.
