Take four cellos, mix with a quartet of Finnish classical-music students who possess a note-for-note knowledge of metal giants Metallica, and beat gently. Viola! You have a truly stirring album that provides tangible evidence of the dramatic passages and intricate arrangements that classical music and heavy metal share. On "Enter Sandman" and "Creeping Death," the exquisite playing of the cellists intensifies the darkness and emotion of Metallica. In the process the strength and versatility of the group's songwriting is given more credence. Perhaps the most remarkable element of the album is the faithfulness that's shown to the original songs, right down to faultlessly following the vocal melodies. With Plays Metallica by Four Cellos, Apocalyptica have proved that the universal language of good music is unbound by genre. Here is a clever concept brilliantly realized. --Steffan Chirazi

2 out of 5 stars only a novelty really.......2007-02-20

I was hoping for a little more, but the novelty of 4 cellos playing metallica wears off pretty quickly. Not my cup of tea.

5 out of 5 stars No better tribute to Metallica........2007-01-10

Well done. Be sure to check out Inquisition Symphony for a couple more Metallica songs including the alltime favorite, Nothing Else Matters. It sounds amazing on cellos. Please buy.

2 out of 5 stars Nice gimmick but..........2006-12-29

So these guys have a gimmick; they play arrangement of Metallica songs for four cellos, as the title of the album makes clear. Well, that sounds like an interesting idea, and it is somewhat, but unfortunately the execution here is lacking. When you get past the novelty of hearing these songs like this, it's the little details that determine whether the recording will have any lasting value to make you want to listen again and again. Unfortunately in this case we have sloppy playing, including bad intonation (out of tune notes) in many places, and in a lot of places the transcriptions are just plain wrong. They also aren't particularly interesting arrrangements, really. Once you've heard one track you've pretty much heard the approach they take on every piece.

Overall, an interesting gimmick but doesn't hold up to repeated listenings.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-11-10

The music is wonderful. It's one of the few CDs that I will regularly leave in the car, and I love the look of surprise on people's faces when they realize that it's Metallica.
I'll be picking up some of the other Apocalyptica albums for gifts this Christmas.

4 out of 5 stars "Farewell", "Ruska", and "Bittersweet" are excellent songs.......2007-01-05

A good number of the songs on this album are a touch "heavy metal" but there are enough songs that I really like to make this a good album. There is a bonus track with Eicca singing in German. I could be wrong, but she doesn't sing in English on this album. Maybe she doesn't feel comfortable singing in the English, but the two gentlemen on the album do a good job on the tracks with lyrics. "Farewell" is an emotional piece that I quite enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars Apocalytpica rocks.......2006-01-12

This CD is one of the best from Apocalyptica. Best songs (besides "The Path") on this CD. "Bittersweet" is the best one, it has Ville Valo (HIM, NOT The Rasmus) as vocals, accompanied by Laurie (The Rasmus). YOU NEED TO OWN THIS!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent once again.......2005-10-21

Once again Apocalyptica proved to be influencial and staggering with their new album. For those of you who are not familiar with Apocalyptica and their music, I recommend you to listen to their former albums in order to appreciate and fully understand the groups's progress. For a quick info you can listen to tracks such as "Master of Puppets", "M.B.", "Inquisition Sypmhony", "Path", "Toreador" and "Prologue[Apprehension]".

Well, from the day they started off with "Plays Metallica by Four Cellos" Apocalyptica have immensely matured and diversified their sound span. Today, their new self-titled album "Apocalyptica" stands at the peak of their maturing. Diversity blended with drums continue to flourish throughout this album. Tracks such as "Fisheye", "Fatal Error" and ofcourse "Betrayal/Forgiveness", which is featuring Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, are the most aggressive and thrilling tracks on the album. While listening to "Fisheye" or "Betrayal/Forgiveness" you can find yourself accompanying the drums and totally blown out. By the way should I mention the unbelievable cello playing skills that will give you shivers?

On the other hand tracks like "Farewell", "Ruska" and "Deathzone" are more classical tuned and evenly beatiful like the rest of the album. I should recommend "Farewell" to everybody, this song conveys all feelings so poised and brilliantly that it can make you cry easily at the end of a though day.

Remaining tracks; "Life Burns!", "Quutamo", "Distraction", "Bittersweet", "Misconstruction" are all moving and should appeal to everyone who likes metal or classical music.

Eventually in this album Apocalyptica took one step forward in terms of sound and recording quality. Fact that they took charge in recording of the album shows us that they are also talented in production as well. This album, standing as the darkest but the most moving Apocalyptica ever made, is a must listen and should thrill everyone who wants to savor quality, adept music.

5 out of 5 stars If only Cello could feed your hunger..........2005-10-06

This is the first album of Apocalyptica that i own. It is very satisfying! and like i said...if only Cello could feed your hunger...this one will definetely will!
The first single from this album is called 'Bittersweet', which is so damn good!!! Not only the sounds of the Cello will move you, but also the duet vocals of, featuring Ville Vallo (the lead singer of The Rasmus of Finland), and the Laurie guy (i forgot his anme..sorry), sounds AMAZING.Note that if you like Til Lindemann of Rammstein's vocal, then you'll love Laurie's too!! The Rasmus dude really sings his heart out....which is why the song is so pure with feelings..and i am telling you the feeling is heavy and for sure this song will stick to your head!**Watch the video clip too because it's beautiful!**
'Ruska' is so freakin' amazing!! The song is not Metal like any other songs in the album, it is more towards instrumental with no Heavy Metal sounds to it. But it doesn't made this song bad at all! The Cello and background beat is simply great! Same goes to "Deathzone", but it's more Metal like this time..
Want real heavy metal clashed with classical?? You have got to listen to 'Quutamo'.... OMG,it's full of attitude and so damn GOOD!!!One of my favourites,of course!
But you cant miss the non-instrumental version of 'Quutamo'.. I have no idea who sang it, but all i can tell you is that the vocalist is a female and she sangs in French if i am not mistaken.. Ok, so maybe i am wrong..maybe it's finnish *but i still think it's french*, who cares..all im saying is that you should listen to that particular song! If that dont appear on your song list on the album, then switch to the last song of the album, Deathzone *right?!*, and wait for the 6th minute and 30 seconds of that song.. I know it's already ended, but wait for it...and that version of 'Quutamo',ladies and gentleman, will play! Trust me!
Anyway, this album is not only for Heavy metal/rock lovers..but also for those with Classical ears!

5 out of 5 stars Oh wow!.......2005-08-20

Well, i LOVE this group. Even though i only own this cd i've heard others and thats what i think... OH WOW. Im a musician (classical) and hearing this its like rock has always been a part in an instrument as classical as the Cello... If you havent heard of them before this is a cd that represents what they are...... i've just heard they are coming to my country (venezuela) in just 2 months..... i cant miss it!!

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind........2006-09-11

Apocalyptica is three guys (used to be four) who play metal on cello. Best known for covering famous songs by renowned artists (they first startled the music scene in 1996 with "Plays Metallica by Four Cellos"), they also write some magnificent pieces of their own, frequently featuring the collaboration of other bands such as HIM. Talented musicians, they're all classically trained, but they put that skill to use in a unique way.

Their music is beautiful. On a piece like Metallica's "One," the strings dance through the intro in almost baroque fashion, only to plunge into a startling imitation of a guitar's grind, and then cut loose into the meat of the piece with a snarl you've probably never heard from a cello before. Maximizing the cello's rich tonal range from a deep bass growl to a soprano that soars into the upper atmosphere, the instruments lend power ballads a heart-rendingly beautiful sound, while they crash through the hard stuff with a vicious exuberance that'd make any metal band proud.

If you enjoy metal, if you admire the lyricism of a well-played string instrument, if you like discovering novel sounds, or if you're simply tired of hearing rehashes of the same old stuff over and over again, you owe it to yourself to check out Apocalyptica. This collection is an excellent place to start, with some of the highlights from all their albums up to this point. Dark, ferocious, beautiful, and ageless, every person I've played this album for has turned to me with a look of joyful surprise and asked where they could find a copy.

This is an awsome collection of chello music. My friend had it and I knew I had to have it to. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Look at their debut...but take it to a new level........2006-02-08

PHENOMENAL!!!!! I loved their Metallica tribute album, but I er...what's a stronger word than love? How about somewhere along the lines of...this-album-is-now-and-forever-will-be-on-replay-in-my-heart. It's dark, heavy, and all done by an instrument that doesn't get enough credit. CELLOS!
The highlights:
One-beautiful chorus and verse. This is probably my favorite song on here. Just like any true Metallica fan would, they stayed true to the original and didn't leave out the powerful ending. Even though I play the cello, that was something I didn't know cellos were capable of. Incredible. I wonder how many bows they broke recording that song...
M.B. I still don't know what it stands for, but it's superb. It's pretty heavy, and if you are a classical musician with a closed mind, you probably won't like it. I applaud Apocalyptica on writing such a great song.
Nothing Else Matters-This song and "The Unforgiven" are my all-time favorite Metallica songs, and this song really retains its integrity. It's one of those nice songs you can turn on, relax and enjoy the beauty. It's not heavy like a few others on this album, but then again, neither was the original. In one word...beautiful.
Harmageddon-This song is pretty heavy. In a strange way, it's also beautiful.
Toreador-The beginning is very unusual. Very nice.
From out of Nowhere-This song is softer, but it has a certain pizazz about it. Listen for yourself.
Fade to Black-One of those songs that just makes you want to scream "YES,YES!!" Soft, but amazing.
Domination-Yet another Apocalyptica song that just put plainly...rocks! Let's start a club called "The Apocalyptica Head-Bangers"
Refuse, Resist-Awesome song.
Inquisition Symphony-I love this song with a passion.
For Whom the Bell Tolls-Ahhh, NICE! Great song.

If you haven't noticed, there aren't any low-lights. Keep an open mind and give it a chance.

2 out of 5 stars Big brother style CD encryption? Check........2007-05-30

Now, don't get me wrong, the music contained on the CD is stellar. Top notch. From what I've been able to hear, it's really great.

My problem is with the CD itself and the encryption used on it. When I plugged it into my Windows machine and attempted to play it using WinAmp, there were no files detected on the CD. Curious, I chose to explore the CD to see what was the matter. And I found a grand total of 3 files. I tried disabling AutoPlay, and still have this issue. The CD will play if I use Windows Media Player, but I find that that particular player cuts out partway through songs, won't play the disk from start to finish, and it uses up too much resource to leave it running in the background.

I find this extremely distasteful and have grown quite upset with the CD itself. I won't be purchasing anything more from this band if this is how they're going to encrypt their products, despite how good their music is.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like it.......2006-03-08

Let me put my 2 cents in real quick. I just went through the entire album, my sister has been trying to get me to for a while. Let me just say that this is never coming out of my CD player for a LONG time. Each song beautifully transistions to the next, and... it's hard to explain the emotions you get, its something you have to experience yourself. This is a music lovers cd, go and get it.

3 out of 5 stars Electric Cellos?.......2005-12-12

Wow another effort by Apocalyptica! I loved Plays Metallica by Four Cellos and Inquisition Symphony has to be one of my favorite albums of all time. But there is something about Cult that fails to grab me. This time they bring in a distortion that sounds like they are playing Electric Cellos, and a few drums and symbols here and there. This sounds promising but I found several of the songs like Coma to be extremely slow and boring. There aren't any songs like Harmageddon. All the songs are technically good and musically brilliant but only about half the songs stand out. The CD also feature a guest female vocalist on Path Vol. 2 and a music video for it as well. My favorite song has to be their cover of the classic song Hall of the Mountain King which is executed perfectly. Then there are two metallica covers, Until is Sleeps is boring and the only post black album cover that I am aware of. Fight Fire with Fire makes up for it and is worthy of any praise. Something just doesn't sound the same. Maybe it's the small amount of covers but there aren't a whole lot of spectacular songs on Cult. Pick up Inquisition Symphony instead for complete perfection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-08-27

Path was the first Apocalyptica song I heard, and I was immediately hooked. Just the idea of metal with cellos is the kind of thing where you think, "Hmmmm. That's just crazy enough to work." And it does work magnificently. The combination of fast-paced, metal-inspired songs like Hyperventilation and slower, classically based songs like Coma works very well. This CD, like their previous ones, still isn't 100% original. This doesn't take away from the CD at all though, it is still an amazing disc.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product I Reccommend For Sure.......2005-02-21

After I heard just the first song on this cd I thought this group rocked. I work at a pavilion and listen to alot of music, and Apocalyptica just kicked the new world of rock. Most of there other music is great as well, hope to hear more from them.

5 out of 5 stars Apocalyptica Experiments.......2006-03-07

After Apocalyptica released Cult, the band went through some issues together. The returned to the studio to record Reflections, this time with only 3 members (2 from the original lineup) and included more percussion (which they barely touched on Cult). This album features no metal covers at all, which takes away from what made them so addicting in the first place, however they bring in legendary drummer Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Grip Inc., Etc.) to play drums on tracks 1,2,4,8 and 10. The results are devastating especially with his Drum solo on somewhere around nothing. The rest of the songs feature other drummers, but for the most part the drumming is simple. As for the cello playing throughout the CD; its top notch. I still feel that inquisition Symphony is their best album because the covers were so amazing and the three original songs were awesome as well. Reflections contains both the Metal Cello songs and original classic material that should appeal to everyone, new fans and old.

If you are already a big Apocalyptica fan, I suggest you hunt down the re-released import edition titled Reflections Revised. It contains five bonus tracks (Seemann (Rammstein Cover) featuring Nina Hagen, Faraway Vol. 2 (featuring Linda, who honestly kills the original song), Delusion, Perdition and Leave Me Alone.) There is also a second disc, a DVD featuring live videos from two concerts with them playing Nothing Else Matters, Somewhere Around Nothing, Faraway, Enter Sandman and Inquisition Symphony. We also get the music videos for Faraway Vol. 2 and Seemann as well as the making of the music videos and the members of Apocalyptica talking about the making of the album Reflections. Mine features different artwork as well and is actually a darkened night version of the original picture.

So there you have it. Try and hunt down Reflections Revised with eBay or something. The bonus content is worth it. Even if you don't get the revised edition, you're still going to get an amazing CD. Its well worth the money, had this CD had even a handful of metal covers, it would easily been their best CD and topped Inquisition Symphony. Hoped this helped.

5 out of 5 stars Dark and powerful.......2006-02-08

This is great music. Dark and powerful, but filled with fluid melodies. Anyone who enjoys classical music and heavy metal will revel in this intoxicating mixture.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Interesting - Do Not Pass It Up.......2005-07-24

The idea of a Metal band having a cellist is odd enough but when you add two more you are left with the wondrous creation that is the group Apocalyptica. This band clearly have taken traditional barriers and shattered the accepted with something completely out of left field. Mixing classical instruments with heavy music is not something that has never been done before (see the Metallica S&M as well as KISS Symphony releases for examples of that). Now while those were appealing in their own unique ways, the Apocalyptica music is new creations entirely. As I listened to this skillful blending of classical instrumentation along with rock solid riffing I was wondering if I was listening to Metal at all. Instead I wondered if perhaps a new breed of Progressive Music was upon us. At fear I would leave something out, I decided to settle on this being a little bit of both. In any case it is a welcome addition to the fold. With Progressive music there are often many classical inferences, what better way to showcase them than with actually classically trained musicians who also are lovers of Metal and things heavy.

The three main figures in Apocalyptica are Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, and Perttu Kivilaakso who all are very adept at the cello and as you listen you find yourself quickly swept up into a unique array of musical colors as you listen to the piece. In addition to the studio musicians who encompass the rest of the recorded piece, Dave Lombardo (most noted for his work in Slayer) appears on a number of tracks as drummer and percussionist.

I enjoyed most of this CD, and had so many interesting takes as Listened. The song "Faraway" had an almost movie soundtrack feel to it. It was a warm and sincere piece, while "Prologue Apprehension" which starts the CD kicks you into a decent gear. In "Somewhere Around Nothing" there are some technical chops that one only generally would find in stuff like Dream Theater or Yes. It is a recommended piece for those who choose to experiment a little more often than others, or for those seeking a different level of musical satisfaction. There are 18 tracks on the CD, a large number of bonus tracks and a video. It is certainly a good amount of value for the money. Of all the tracks, there is two vocal songs, and one is sung by Nina Hagen.

5 out of 5 stars drums from a good drummer.......2005-06-25

It's ok to add drums if they're played by Dave Lombardo of Slayer.

3 out of 5 stars more is less?.......2005-06-14

oops. I saw Apocalyptica live in D.C. with their drummer and I rescind all previous comments about percussion being a bad idea.

Yes, I like Reflections. Yes, I love Apocalyptica, and this album is good and I'm happy that someone had the sense to release it in the States. But here's the thing. Part of Apocalyptica's appeal was the fact that their music was exclusively created by cellos. On "Inquisition Symphony" they even boasted about this. On "Cult", Path Vol. 2 (when they brought in a vocalist) was really f'in cool. Yes, I'm glad that they want to experiment and "expand their sound" and I want the group to feel free creatively, but the addition of percussive elements on some tracks on this album seems to take away from their unique, original butt-kickin' nature, the feeling of "Oh my god, they made all this crazy noise with just /cellos/?!" So, Apocalytpica is still doing well, but I fear with the addition of other instruments they have become just another orchestral metal band.

5 out of 5 stars Cello Rock?.......2007-07-27

Great music from 4 cello's. Who would have thought that good rock to hard rock music could come from a classic instrument.

3 out of 5 stars Surprisingly, very Metallica.......2003-12-04

Like everyone else, I was thrilled about hearing an all-original Apocalyptica album. Breaking away from doing Metallica covers was definitely a necessary step.

Unfortunately, the great irony of this album is that much of it sounds like late-period, ho-hum Metallica. Rather than building on the classically-minded complexity and nuance of earlier originals like Harmageddon, the songs on Cult seem to be written for a standard rock line-up: it's easy to pick out what would be the vocal line, the rhythm guitar, etc.

Structurally, the songs are also lacking. Given the simplicity of their compositions on Cult (and the decidedly "metal" production, rendering the fact that they play cellos almost pointless), I can't fight back the sensation that this is pop/rock mediocrity: verse/chorus/verse, a few hard songs separated by the obligatory ballads, and so forth.

The addition of percussion is a mixed blessing. It does add another layer to their sound, but at the same time, it allows them an easy escape route. I direct the listener to Unforgiven, from their first album, which contains a brilliantly articulated "drum fill" played on the cello. Very simple, very effective (equally effective in the original Metallica recording), and without the obvious use of actual drums. It would have been interesting to see how Cult could be re-interpreted without the use of actual percussion, instead incorporating those textures into the cellos.

So why three stars? Because I'm being hard on them. Really, this is a fine album. I would give Cult two stars and call it "pretty good", were it not for some astounding pieces. In Memoriam, Hyperventilation, Kaamos, and Coma are among the finest Apocalyptica pieces, and easily raise the listening value of the album. And their rendition of Hall of the Mountain King is stellar (the two Metallica covers are embarassingly lifeless).

For the most part, with Cult, we see Apocalyptica becoming a heavy metal band with some solid classical sensibilities. Oh, and by the way, they play on four cellos (though at times you wouldn't know it, the distortion makes them out to be guitars). Now, with Reflections, they seem to have all but abandoned subtlety and nuance. My hope is that they will return to top form in a few years, as bands of genuine talent tend to do.

    5 out of 5 stars Astonishing.......2002-10-09

I happen to own all 3 Apocalyptica albums, and this is their finest yet. They finaly decided to make the huge step, write their own music instead of playing some metallica songs like in metallica by four cellos(awesome album too, dont get me wrong). Now maybe the time has come for metallica to play apocalyptica songs?
To cut a long story short, dont just buy the normal edition, get the special edition,it deserves every nicle of its price

5 out of 5 stars Need more stars!.......2002-07-30

Someone else commented "buy two - just in case" and completely agree. In fact, I did. I try to get people interested in these wacky cellist and loan it out often - but I NEVER want to risk being with out it, so I have a second copy. Totally worth the price of an import. I'm not a big fan of heavy metal. The music of Apocalyptica is heavy, yes - in the form of being intense music that you cannot take lightly. Passion. It's all about passion for life and those around you. The music flows through you, lifts you up, carries you down, and brings you back better than before. Serious music by incredible musicians. Check it out - you won't regret it!

Buy two, just incase you loose your first one. It is that good.
