Great bang for the buck.......2007-07-25

Given the inconsistency of the Purple line-up through the years, it's quite amazing that they didn't end up second-rate hack acts playing at obscure county fairs or dingy bars trying to make ends meet. Somehow this outfit has retained its popularity, and the budget priced "The Very Best Of Deep Purple" is a great compilation. While it doesn't contain material from "Come Taste The Band" that featured the late Tommy Bolin or any Steve Morse-era material, currently Purple's lead guitarist, the focal point of Jon Lord's trademark organ and Ritchie Blackmore's slicing leadwork make this a very solid collection, indeed.
Of course, "Smoke On the Water" is here, but so are lots of other gems, including their first hit "Hush", a great reworking of Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman", and "Burn", all great tracks.
The set closes with "Knocking At Your Back Door", from "Perfect Strangers", the album that reunited the classic line-up from "Machine Head" and "Made In Japan". Ian Gillan is one of rock's great vocalists, and the best Purple ever had. He still sings for them today.
The other must-have CD is their live masterpiece "Made In Japan", with much tougher versions of "Highway Star" and "Smoke On The Water", and a real space jam on the 20 minute plus "Space Truckin'". Reacquaint yourself with this great band or introduce yourself today.

The Title Says It All.......2007-06-06

This is a great intro to one of rock's greatest band. For a single CD, this is the one to one. It truely is the very best of purple.

A tale of two concerts.......2007-05-16

For whatever reason, the footage of the Copenhagen concert rarely shows Ritchie Blackmore playing, even during his intros or solos. Somebody needs to track that cameraman down and slap him silly. The New York concert footage is better, but the majoity of the tracks on this DVD come from the Copenhagen show. Overall this DVD is a disappointment, enjoyable sometimes, but a disappointment nonetheless.

The very, very, very best?.......2007-02-02

Well, yes and no! There're a couple of things that you should know about this release: first, the liner notes claim that this is the first collection of the CD era, which is not entirely true, since the previous "Deepest Purple" compilation was already available (However, the remastering is most welcome!). And that's probably my only complaint (I would actually rate this item with 4 and a half stars, but since the format won't allow me to do that...) about this compilation: it offers very little additional material, only 3 songs that were not included in "Deepest...".

Its title notwithstanding, this CD is a "greatest hits" compilation and not (necessarily) "The Very best", but semantics aside, there are a couple of exceptions of songs that were not issued as singles (Space Trucking and Child in Time, for instance...). I originally didn't care much for the covers of "Kentucky Woman" and "Hush", but I understood their inclusion here since those were the first hits the band scored with in the U.S (the territory this CD is meant for). But the tunes eventually grew on me, leading me to get their first 3 records.

It's a shame that no additional material from the band's second coming in the 80's could be included though, but that is simply a record company issue: the latter part of Purple's catalog was released with a different record label. In the end, this is a great compilation, and if you want to have a taste of some of Purple's best material, this is a good place to start. However, if you, like me, were looking for a more comprehensive package, including music from all the lineups (including the criminally underrated Mk IV, completely ignored here...), you might be a bit disappointed...You can always get the boxet "Shades", but... that's a different tale... But casual fans looking for nothing but the hits rejoice: here they are!!! And for roughly 8 bucks, you can't really ask for more...

Rock And Roll At Its Best.......2006-12-07

One of the biggest and best bands of the late 1960s' / early 1970s' classic rock movement was undoubtedly Deep Purple. Featuring some of the finest musicians rock hard to offer as well as one of the best lead singers ever (Ian Gillan), in their heyday they were truly a force to be reckoned with.

This 16 track colection collects all of Deep Purple's most popular hits, such as "Hush", "Kentucky Woman", the epic "Child In Time", "Highway Star", the legendary "Smoke On The Water" (a song that joins "Stairway To Heaven" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" as one of the echelons of overplayed classic rock anthems, which is not to say it's a bad song), "My Woman From Tokyo" and many others. The sound quality is fantastic, and the liner notes make for a really good read.

I highly recommend this collection.

LOVE THIS CD.......2007-06-01

I just love this CD. This is the first Deep Purple CD I have owned and I got this one because it seemed to have all their hits on it and also becaus I think it was the only one that has "When a Blind Man Cries", which to me, is an incredible song. My 12 year old son loves the CD too and we have listened to it every morning this week while in the car driving to his school. People are very surprised to hear a 12 year old saying he loves Deep Purple!

THE BAND: Over the years - Rod Evans (vocals), Ian Gillan (vocals), David Coverdale (vocals), Joe Lynn Turner (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Tommy Bolin (guitar), Steve Morse (guitar), Nick Simpler (bass), Roger Glover (bass), Glenn Hughes (bass)..... Jon Lord (keyboards) and Ian Paice (drums & percussion) have appeared on every Deep Purple release.

THE DISCS: (1998) 28 total tracks on 2 discs clocking in at approximately 138 minutes (70 minutes on disc-1, 68 on disc-2). Included with the discs is a 22-page heavy duty glossy purple booklet containing an extensive 15-page history of the band, song titles, and what songs came from which albums and year released (sadly no band photos or song lyrics). This compilation follows the band from 1968-98. Digitally remastered sound. Label - EMI Records.

COMMENTS: A collection like this has been a long time coming. A band with such a deep and rich rock history deserves such a tribute. There are several compilations out there, but this double disc set is worth the search (and I truly believe the single disc mixes simply can't do the band justice). Disc-1 concentrates on the early years, 1968-72 only... the sound is dated, but so much of the music from the late 60's is (the remastering helps a tad bit, but not much). Disc-2 has a much broader ranger - following Deep Purple from 1972 through 1998. THE GOOD: Most, if not all, the staples are here - "Hush", "Black Night", "Speed King", "Child In Time", "Strange Kind Of Woman", "Fireball", "Highway Star", "Smoke On The Water", "Woman From Tokyo", "Burn", "Perfect Strangers", "Knocking At Your Back Door", "King Of Dreams", "Ted The Mechanic", etc. The history contained in the liners notes is extensive. Chronological order is a plus - you can hear the band really mature over the years with their sound and line-up changes. Great remastered sound (especially) on the later era material. Many of the tracks are "Anniversary" remasters and/or remixes of which Roger Glover produced. THE NOT SO GOOD: Minor things really. I understand 6 songs from the early Rod Evans era is probably necessary here, but I was never a big fan of the 60's Deep Purple. Track 2, "Mandrake Root" - as much as it the liner notes say it's an early penned Blackmore treasure... I find it 6 minutes of absolute Hell to get through. "Hard Road (Wring That Neck)" sounds more like ELP than Deep Purple thanks to Jon Lord's overbearing keyboards. The crooning vocals in the middle of "The Bird Has Flown" are downright scary. This "DP 30 : Very Best Of" does a very good job taking songs from the wide catalog of Purple's albums over the years, but some albums were passed on - "Made In Japan" (and several other live albums), "House Of Blue Light", "The Battle Rages On"... and "Bananas (2003), "Rapture Of The Deep" (2006) released after the fact. No representation from one of the best live rock albums of the 1970's ("Made In Japan") is simply wrong. DP was always a great band live and there should have been at least 1 live track here. Several songs are missing - the most critical being - "Space Truckin'", "Mistreated", and "The Mule"; as well as some other deserving songs like ""Spanish Archer", "Anya", "Sail Away", "Lick It Up", "You Fool No One", and "Lazy". Utilize the space - between the 2 discs there is 22 unused minutes. OVERALL: "30" represents an excellent mix of Deep Purple tracks despite a few minor things wrong (and what compilation is perfect?). I firmly believe this is their best compilation to date - too bad it's now considerd an import. Lots of music from a legendary band, digitally remastered sound, classic Deep Purple songs (5 stars).

If all you're looking for a good place to start?, this is a very good Deep Purple greatest hits collection.

I would say that this is by far you're best bet when it comes to a single disc hits package. It has classic purple as well as some of the newer stuff with Mr. Morse on guitar. It also sounds far superior to any of the other hits packages out there I've heard so far. Most of the bigger hits are found on here and for what it is, it's pretty darn good.

Is it missing stuff?, you bet it is, lots of really good stuff like Lazy, Maybe I'm a Leo, Knocking At Your Back Door, The Mule, Space Trucking? etc, but it's still the best single disc yet!

Good "best of" CD........2006-07-21

Contains almost all standard Deep Purple listening, but for some reason, "Space Trucking" is missing! I understand including "You Keep on Moving" to represent Mk 4, but seriously, which would you rather have? Nothing against Bolin though. I'm disappointed that no best of compilation has included "Mistreated," which is often overlooked. Everything else is good. A good way to get started on Deep Purple, along with Made in Japan, Machine Head, and Burn.

Remaster puts magic back into Deep Purple.......2002-05-14

I got so much enjoyment out of this band when I was a teenager and now (twenty five years later) playing the digital remaster is like hearing Deep Purple for the first time! You can enjoy Ian Paice's brilliant drum-playing like never before (!), Jon Lord's distinctive organ sound is crystal clear, and I can for the first make out what Ritchie Blackmore's wibbly guitar is actually doing! Ironic, isn't it, that advanced technology may prove to be the main cause behind the revival of bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, etc? Not a bad thing. Listen to Highway Star. It positively cooks, while Demon's Eye, Smoke on the Water and Never Before sound as fresh as ever (which is more than can be said of most of Led Zeppelin's output). Some of these songs sound like they were recorded yesterday. Points off for the inclusion last few tracks which in my view don't quite cut it. The rest is Rock n Roll Rolls Royce.
Take my word for it. Deep Purple were, in their heyday, absolutely brilliant. This is the proof.

In the '70s, Deep Purple carved their niche in hard rock royalty with a heavy guitar-driven sound. The monstrous riff that opened "Smoke on the Water" became the first thing many aspiring guitarists learned to play. Songs like "Woman from Tokyo" and "Highway Star" epitomized the screaming rock vocalist of the '70s, and many of Deep Purple's finest tracks were graced by Ian Gillan's voice (who also lent his wail to the Jesus Christ Superstar album.) David Coverdale, who later sang in Whitesnake, also provided front man duties for a while. Both "Space Truckin'" and "Highway Star" were party favorites, the latter's breakneck speed and ripping guitar leads making it a testosterone-charged force to be reckoned with. I remember being given this by my bro on vinyl many years ago. Its what made me a rabid Purple fan. FInally grabbed this on CD....though old memories came flooding back, the music is sadly dulled by the poor production.

In desperate need of a remaster.......2006-12-07

If you don't know the story of Deep Purple, I'll make it short and just say they are one of the greatest and possibly THE most influential metal band of all time. Now, on to this actual disc, out of the hundreds of CDs I own, this has by far the WORST sound quality of any of them. The music sounds so washed out. It's completely unacceptable. Do not purchase this.

Great Tunes, crappy Production!!.......2006-10-03

If you're looking for some old school Purple, this cd is a great teaser. The song selection is excellent for what it is. Yes it's missing some gems, insert Lazy, Never Before, etc, etc here and there and you've got a perfect greatest hits package. However let's face it, all hits packages miss something, so what you going do?

The only really downfall with this cd is the production. This puppy needs to be re-mastered something fierce. Right now it just sounds really cardboardy if that makes sense and that takes away from the overall enjoyment of this decent hits package.

I'd recommend it if you only want old school Purple and that's about it. Their are better sounding Deep Purple hits cd's out there so check them out first before you buy this one.

My score is 4.5 outta 5 for song selection and 2.5 for production!

Like I said, the tunes rock, by the sound is pretty ugly!

DEEPEST PURPLE - The Title Says It All.......2004-04-12

After Deep Purple disbanded in 1976, Warner Brothers issued the first compilation of their music, WHEN WE ROCK, WE ROCK AND WHEN WE ROLL, WE ROLL. A rather brief and far from complete overview of the Deep Purple oeuvre (at only 8 tracks covering 44 minutes in length), it was nevertheless welcome for all of their fans who were heartbroken over the band's slow disintegration, and missed their good ol' hard-rocking classics. Although incomplete, the record managed to span nearly their entire recording career up to that point, from 1968 to 1974. Ranging from their Mark I lineup classics "Hush" and "Kentucky Woman" (plus the powerful and rousing instrumental "Hard Road") through the standards of their most popular Mark II lineup "Space Truckin'," "Highway Star," "Smoke On The Water" and "Woman From Tokyo" to the one representative from the Mark III lineup "Burn," WHEN WE ROCK helped satisfy fans' thirst for Deep Purple---at least for the time being.

Then, beginning in 1979, original lead singer Rod Evans did something really stupid. He took advantage of his past status, and the band's then-current dormancy, to make a quick buck by gathering up a group of session rock musicians and going out on tour as "Deep Purple"---even going so far as to perform some of the Mark II songs on stage as if they had performed them to begin with! For example, Rod would introduce "Smoke On The Water" as being from "our album" MACHINE HEAD. After several months of this nonsense, the legitimate members of Deep Purple caught wind of this and promptly sued. Finding in their favor, a judge ordered Evans and his gang to cease and desist, which they reluctantly did. Deep Purple then got Evans to permanently give up his rights to ever perform any of their songs again---including those on which he had originally sung. (If he hadn't agreed to this, it would have meant a lawsuit that would have ended up stripping him of all his dishonest, misbegotten earnings from the "fake DP tour," and which would have thereby left him in utter abject poverty.) While this may seem harsh to some of you readers, keep in mind that Rod Evans made his own bed, and now he had to lie in it---permanently. This is why he hasn't been heard from since.

As a result of Evans' actions, and the new attention given to Deep Purple as a result of the lawsuit and victory, in 1980 they compiled what was at the time the longest single album in the history of popular music: DEEPEST PURPLE. Spanning a full 12-song roster, including the 10-minute plus epic "Child In Time," DEEPEST PURPLE clocked in at a then-ungodly 63 minutes, giving their die-hard fans more bang for the buck than they had ever imagined. Noticeably, there was a complete absence of anything from the Rod Evans-led Mark I lineup. When Warner Brothers released DEEPEST PURPLE in late 1980, record stores found it virtually impossible to keep it on the shelves. It was a very difficult album to get for months as a result. Pleasantly surprised by their newfound popularity, the members of the famed Mark II era of Deep Purple (guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover, vocalist Ian Gillan, keyboardist Jon Lord, and drummer Ian Paice) then began to hold reunion talks, which culminated in 1984 with the recording of PERFECT STRANGERS.

So there you have the context, and the associated drama, under which DEEPEST PURPLE was compiled and released. Arguably the greatest Heavy Metal compilation in history, it features what were truly the best and most influential songs from both the Mark II & Mark III lineups (the Mark III lineup consisting of all the above bandmembers except for Gillan & Glover, who had left at the end of 1973 and were replaced by vocalist David Coverdale and bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes). Admittedly, this recording now sounds dated because of the relatively weak production values; still, you can't deny the presence of early-Heavy Metal scorchers such as "Speed King" from the DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK album (1970), which I believe is the earliest example of the subgenre known as Thrash Metal (although some would say that honor belongs to the 1974 Queen classic "Stone Cold Crazy"). There is also the almost-equally-scorching "Black Night" from the same album, "Fireball" from the 1971 album of the same name, the wonderously noisy epic "Child In Time" (also from IN ROCK), the most famous classics from MACHINE HEAD (1972): "Space Truckin'," "Highway Star" and "Smoke On The Water"), the lone popular classic from the 1973 album WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE?, "Woman From Tokyo," and both title-song representatives of the Mark III-era 1974 albums BURN and STORMBRINGER. Oh, and I almost forgot, there is the bluesy and almost funky "Demon's Eye" originally from FIREBALL.

DEEPEST PURPLE is the perfect introduction to Deep Purple; for anyone who has heard some of their songs on classic rock radio and can't get enough of them, it simply can't be beat. For those who also love the Mark I classics "Hush" and "Kentucky Woman" (they are, after all, DP classics too, no matter what Rod Evans did afterwards), I recommend buying the earlier compilation in addition to this one. Deep Purple is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and DEEPEST PURPLE is a great representation of their talents.

MOST RECOMMENDED

Get This And MACHINE HEAD First.......2003-09-22

DEEPEST PURPLE is a great overviw of Deep Purple's prime 1970-1974 period. It contains some European singles, as well as the obvious hits and important album tracks. If you're starting a Deep Purple collection, get this one and MACHINE HEAD first- preferably both at once.

redundancy compilation!.......2004-08-13

This one is not dedicated to any die hard deep purple or rainbow fans, but only for youngsters who love them for the very first time. The songs are remaining the same like the other one which had been appeared in the old LP's for 20 years ago.
If you love DP and its relatives bands, pls buy the original albums. Keep away from this redundancy cd compilation. Deep Purple Dramatician O. Jon

Most Pretentious Title Ever...........2004-11-05

"In Rock" & "Machine Head" are tied for the best Deep Purple album ever (personally, I do not consider compilation albums real "albums"). It is impossible to appreciate Deep Purple's music to the fullest without hearing it within the context of the original albums. Buying every Deep Purple album, however, is obviously not cost effective for the casual fan, so the compilation "albums" are the next best thing. That being said this title might be the best "one" disc Deep Purple compilation & a great place to start a Deep Purple collection for someone on a budget. But if you have the extra cash, slam it down on the "Shades" 4 cd Box Set. You can pick up "Shades" on eBay or zShops for just over an Andrew Jackson (Amazon always deletes out actually dollar amounts). Or if you're really swimming in the green upgrade to the Mt Olympus of Deep Purple anthologies, the 6 disc "Listen, Learn, Read On". Also for those on a budget, check into Rhino's single disc compilation, "The Very Best Of Deep Purple".

Very Good And Interesting Compilation, But..........2004-08-26

I think if you're new to Deep Purple you should buy all of their Mark II era albums first, (In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Made In Japan and/or Live In Japan, In Concert 1970-72, Who Do You Think You Are etc.) rather than this compilation.

Then you'll now why are they here Now.

Aside from Super Trouper and possibly Call Of The Wild (which are still very good songs, but really not their greatests), this is a superior collection than rhino's Very Best Of disc.

Note: Space Truckin' and Lazy are not included here, which are big problems, because they're one of the band's finest songs (The Rhino compilation does not include Lazy. This is shameful).

If you need one single-disc compilation, you should buy this.
Otherwise buy Studio and Live albums, not compilations.

Finally! Deep Purple's Best Compilation Album Has Just Gotten Even Better!.......2007-06-01

I remember all those years ago when as a teenager I wanted to find out more about this band Deep Purple that seemed to be all the rage with the older kids around me when I was growing up and so I decided to get a compilation album of the band. I got this very album on cassette and I remember listening to it over and over again for many months.

This album belongs to that rare breed of compilations that doesn't sound like a disjointed collection of songs but instead has a very cohesive-sounding flow to it and every track seemed destined to be in the order that it is in. Starting with the great opening track "Black Night" and ending with the anthemic "Smoke on the Water" with "Highway Star" (my favourite) right smack in the middle, every track in here is a classic rock standard. No weak tracks on this album and now we get the whole package in a well designed mini-lp replica sleeve which includes all the lyrics in English and Japanese too.

Although there isn't any mention of any remastering being done, our friends from Japan have done a reasonably good job of mastering this release so that the sound quality, although not as great as the Rhino Best of remastered release, is still pretty good sounding as well overall. While that Rhino release is more comprehensive in that it includes tracks from the Mach 1 and the later Machs lineups, "Deepest Purple" is still my favourite Deep Purple compilation overall as it contains what I and perhaps most fans would consider to be the band's best ever work i.e. the Mach 2 and 3 lineups.

What would have made this release even better and perhaps deserving of 5 stars would have been had all the tracks been given a good remastering job just like the Rhino release had. Still, as the sound quality doesn't suffer too much in this version, this album is still my favourite Purple compilation album and comes highly recommended.

Bought this "Best of" on Vinyl. Very Hard to Find, Limited Issue, and on Purple Vinyl.

Very Nice Compilation of Deep Purple's Hits - It may not contain all of them - But its really nicely mixed & produced.

If you can find it on Vinyl - pick it up - put it away - and save. This LP is going to appreciate in value based on its limited pressing.

I wrote back in March that this set was very good (and it is to a point) but time limitations or no time limitations, any DEEP PURPLE compilation without "SPACE TRUCKIN'" is a JOKE. The idea that someone could sit there and say "Yeah, we'll include *TED THE MECHANIC*(from the "Perpendicular" lp) over SPACE TRUCKIN' to represent "The *VERY BEST* of Deep Purple" is ridiculous to me. They should've just titled this collection: "An Overview." Because without the classic (..really, a *perfect* song that defined 70's hard rock) "SPACE TRUCKIN'" this collection CAN NOT be truely be called *The very best of*

This album highlights the fact that the paice gillan lord blackmore glover line up produced the most vibrant essential deep purple sound of all. This is a great album to get a sense of the evolvement of deep purple, with speed king sounding as powerful as ever, and an impressive remix of highway star. I just wanted to jump in the car and drive! If I was still looking for some deep purple music (and you want to hear Space Truckin' which is omitted from this cd) I'd go for digitally remastered versions of In Rock and Machinehead, but if you're looking for the history of the band this this cd should satisfy.
