Originality, innovation, talent and expression!.......2007-07-05

System of a down represents an interesting proposal among the tendency to search, explore and experiment with imported elements of other latitudes (as a matter of fact, there is a well deserved homage to Black Sabbath in Boom!) and the result could not be more rewarding. These guys demonstrate to have a talent far beyond we might to denominate common places, their lyrics play hard against a state of things. On the other hand the way to articulate and ensemble the songs work out as a rock suite. They play and blend with mesmerizing originality new sounds that makes us to rethink the well known cry of battle expressed so many times along so many rock festivals: Long life for the Rock& roll.

this album is one of my favorite albums from system of a down!!!! The only thng is you have to get the unedited version for it to have the full impact!!

softer and more melodic.......2007-01-30

This is a more melodic approach than SOAD's first album. It mixes elements of metal with melodic softer parts in the majority of songs, and these are the strongest. 'Chic n stu' has a melodic soft section, which makes the song shine, 'Mr Jack' is one of the slower and instantly likeable songs. The last six songs are really effective. 'Highway song' is extremely melodic and 'f@ck the system' is straight ahead metal, but effective. 'Ego brain' has a nice eastern feel and mixes tuneful with heavier parts. 'Streamline' has excellent ascending and amazing vocal passages, with orchestral overtones. 'Roulette' is an acoustic driven ballad. The melody and backing guitars/violins is exceptional, but the vocals are completely out of tune, the higher vocals are comletely flat ruining the effects and listen to the very end where they both sing 'around you' the high voice goes at least a semi tone out of key, and Serj seems to run out of breath and does an uneccessary pitch wobble. This is clearly a demo, and should have been polished more, as it would have been a standout.
'36', 'Pictures' and 'A.D.D.' are rather heavy and unmelodic.

Best of System Of A Down.......2006-11-03

All SOAD's albums are great. I like this one because every song could be a single. They're just too good. My favorite songs include: Boom! I-E-A-I-A-I-O, F**k The System, Highway Song...

1. Chic n' Stu (10/10) Great song. Nothing more. It's just a typical SOAD song that everyone has to love.

2. Innervision (9.5/10) Cool song. Kinda repetive and gets a little old, but it was a good single.

3. Bubbles (10/10) I like this song. Short, but very fun, and fast-paced.

4. Boom! (12/10) BOOM! Love this song. It's great, everyone should love this song. It's great, and the verses are intense because they're spoken. Great overall song, chorus is just crazy!

5. Nuguns (9.7/10) Pretty sickk song. Gets in your head right away. It's catchy, but just gets old after a long while.

6. A.D.D. (11/10) Awesome. Makes you go f**king crazy.

7. Mr. Jack (8/10) I'd say the slowest song on the album. Maybe. I don't like it that much. It's alright.

8. I-E-A-I-A-I-O (14/10) OOOHHH YEAH! Now here's a real SOAD song. Best song on the album. It's soo fun to sing to cuz it goes freakin fast. and the chorus is just awesome. The overall is exciting!

9. 36 (1000/10) Haha 30 sec song. Nothing more. It's pretty funny.

10. Pictures (10/10) Pretty sick. Very catchy, and good beat.

11. Highway Song (13/10) This could be a great single. I love it, especially how it goes along with Pictures. The chorus is great to sing.

12. F**k The System (1337/10) OMFG BEST F**KING SONG! IT'S CRAZY, IT'S AWESOME, IT'S FAST, AND IT'S F**KED UP! U CAN'T RESIST LISTENING TO THIS SONG!

13. Ego Brain (7/10) Not good. Even worse than Mr. Jack. It's slow, but not very likable.

14. TheTawaves (9/10) Pretty good. It's catchy, and fun to sing. The lyrics seem confusing though.

15. Roulette (10/10) Slow, and pretty sad. Simple to play on guitar. Fun to sing as well.

16. Streamline (10/10) I would say this would be the best ending song for SOAD. It's cathcy, and good tempo to it. I like the ending.

Overall, this was a very good purchase. I'd rate it 96/100. It's great, buy it!

The Second Guess.......2006-07-09

The first song through me for a loop... "I was like...ummmmmm" but then the rest of the CD followed and I was like "Outstanding... Still going" I even came to love that first song as strictly commical. These guys are the energizer bunnies of rock!

The original Yippie, Abbie Hoffman left little room for compromise. His combative activism eventually forced him underground and guaranteed him a place in the lexicon of alternative Sixties culture. The soundtrack features both original 1960s protest music from Phil Ochs, Edwin Starr, and Country Joe and the Fish and remakes of classic songs from an impressive list of modern musicians. The reinterpretations are strong. Steve Earle and Sheryl Crow belt out the Chambers Brothers' "Time Has Come Today" with a punk edge. Bonnie Raitt has never sounded more relaxed, underlining the somber sentiments of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" with a gentle, tremolo-ed guitar. Dylan's farewell to protest, "My Back Pages," is given a majestic reading by Joan Osborne and Jackson Browne, with a funereal organ haunting the track. Most appropriate is Ani DiFranco covering Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" with her usual dose of idiosyncrasy. --Rob O'Connor

This is generally just an OK soundtrack - except for the 1st song "Time Has Come Today" by Sheryl Crow and Steve Earle which is just... phenomenal. Actually, IMHO, it is one of the great covers of all time and alone is worth the cost of the CD.

One of those rare soundtracks..........2004-09-27

This is one of those rare soundtracks that actually has vision, direction and cohesiveness. It consists mostly of updated versions of classic songs. Steve Earle & Sheryl Crow team up for the Chambers Brothers classic "Time". Other interesting team-ups are Joan Osborne & Jackson Browne covering Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages" and Eric Clapton, Billy Preston & Ringo Starr doing John Lennon's "Power to the People". Bonnie Raitt does a beautiful cover of Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue". Ani DiFranco covers two songs, Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" and Phil Och's "When I'm Gone". Timothy B. Schmidt rocks with CS&N's "Carry On". And last but not least, Mary Chapin Carpenter does a very bluesy and sexy version of Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" that would have been a great single at AAA formats. There are also a few originals - Phil Och's: I Ain't Marching Anymore, Country Joe and the Fish: Superbird & Fell Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag, and Edwin Starr: War.

Quality Covers.......2003-01-04

This is a soundtrack which updates some classic songs and brings back a few golden oldies. For me, the greatest hit is the absolute blow your socks off version of "Power to the People" which Eric Burdon and Billy Preston nail. Besides being an unlikely pairing, the two give what was a second-tier John Lennon song red carpet treatment that rivals the master musician's with Burdon's empassioned vocals and Preston's pounding keyboards! Equally as magical is Bonnie Raitt's cool bluesy reading of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue." "The highway is for gamblers ... take what you have gathered from coincidence," she croons magically. I have this tune recorded by Joan Baez, the Byrds, Judy Collins, Richie Havens, Barry McGuire, the Animals and of course, the songwriter. Raitt shines! The other Dylan pairing with Jackson Browne and Joan Osborne's version of "My Back Pages" is weighted only by Steve Earle's somber organ throughout the piece. Mary Chapin Carpenter's wacky version of Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" is also making me hit for the repeat button with her little warble, "I'm just mad about 14; she's just mad about me." Steve Earle and Sheryl Crow do a great job of "Time Has Come Today"; and it's interesting to hear the female vocal on the song. The Phil Ochs track and Country Joe's "Fixing" track are thematically essential for the film and sound great. All in all, this is a soundtrack that has great focus and unity. U snooze U lose! Enjoy!

Soundtrack for Multiple Generations.......2000-08-07

This CD works for more than those of us who were teenagers when this music was first released. The Steve Earle/Sheryl Crow collaboration (Time Has Come Today) is a more contemplative treatment of this song. Bonnie Raitt shines (It's All Over Now, Baby Blue) with a bluesy, heartfelt rendering of this Dylan classic. Phil Ochs, Edwin Starr, and Country Joe & The Fish are here for authenticity, to balance the "newness" of Ani DiFranco, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Joan Osborne. I applaud the artist selection as more daring than would have been expected.

Even though Steal This Album is its third LP, the trio of Boots, E-Roc, and DJ Pam the Funkstress remains one of hip-hop's most underrated bands. Rather than represent the big ballers, the Coup kick it to the other side of the black community--the proletariat. With most other rappers lost in the paper chase, the Coup expose the capitalist cheddar chase for the hustle it is and promote politics beyond mere polemics. Merging their message with intricately funky music, they are artists and activists for a new era. The revolution won't be televised, but you can find it recorded on Steal This Album. --Oliver Wang

I'll admit that Im a newbie when it comes to The Coup. I first heard The Coup on Dead Prez's Get Up(off of the Turn Off The Radio mixtape). Then I read an interview with The Coup in this local magazine concerning their controversial cover for Pick A Bigger weapon. Then I decided to search for their albums. Unfortunatly I was only able to pick up this one and Pick A Bigger Weapon. Boots Riley is a gifted and creative Mc who will slip you some solid gems in the music whether or not you're too slow to catch it and Pam "The Funkstress" does her thing as usual on the ones and twos. Standout Tracks: THE SHIPMENT, ME AND JESUS THE PIMP IN A '79 GRANADA LAST NIGHT(great story about a pimp he knew who had his mother as one of his hoes), 20,000 GUN SALUTE, BUSTERISMOLGY, BREATHING APPARATUS(creative as well as truthful on the hospital situation), THE REPO MAN SINGS FOR YOU, UNDERDOGS(the deepest song on here), FIXATION, WHAT THE PO-POS HATE etc. Dont forget the all too funny Piss On Your Grave and the hilarious interlude that comes before it. Filler: NONE!!! Bottom Line: The Coup's Steal This Double Album is another excellent album to add to The Coup collection. Its not only creative and conscious music, its soul music. Boots Riley was impressive on the lyrical tip, the guest appearances were not bad and Pam is the best Female DJ you'll ever hear and the live performance on disc 2 is proof of that. All in all it was a great effort. DONT STEAL THIS DOUBLE ALBUM, BUY IT!!!

Steal This [Double] Album was the very first Coup album I've picked up and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I never knew what this group: Boots Riley, Pam The Funkstress, and E-Roc (if you want to add him) was all about or their rhyme style, but it was a great experience for me. As many reviewers pointed out, the hit song, "Me and Jesus The Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night" is a long ballad about his days hanging around a pimp named Jesus and how it's affected his mom an his life. "Busterismology" is a hard hitting/fast moving song that talks about starting the revolution.

The next few tracks will explain to me that this trio wasn't a very rich group. "Cars & Shoes" is a song about Boots riding in a P.O.S. hooptie driving. "Breathing Apparatus" is funny because its sets Boots and E-Roc in the hospital without any health insurance, so they fear that the doctors will do something to them like "...f*** with their breathing apparatus..." "Pizza Man (skit)/Repo Man Sings" both features vocals from Hiero member Del The Funky Homosapien playing as the repo man. "Underdogs" will carry over from the previous song, basically sayings that Boots feels your pain if you can't pay your bills on time (I'm guessing that hes had his stuff repoed also). "Piss On Your Grave" is a good song too, and "Sneakin In" will make you laugh a little bit.

"Fixation" will have your head nod on how Boots rhymes throughout the song.

The second disk is just a live performance by the group.

It's a good album if you're new or old to The Coup, and want to get a feel on opinionated/political rap. I highly recommend it to those who like independant rap from The Bay Area, or just want to try something new, because you won't be dissapointed.

The other side of the hip-hop nation.......2004-02-06

The Coup are always at their best when deconstructing hip-hop mythology. On "Me and Jesus the Pimp" the Coup look at the pimp's lifestyle from the viewpoint of a victim of pimp machinations, in this case a boy borne of the relationship between Jesus the Pimp and "his #1 ho" in which the protagonist avenges the death of his mother at the hands of his father after a healthy dose of self-realization. On "Cars and Shoes" Boots, Pam, and E-Roc serve up an antidote to all those rollin' in my Benz car anthems with humor and not a little bit of reality.
The Coup continue to provide a refreshing alternative to the "gangstas" by pointing out who society's REAL gangsters are: the corporations, the government, the media, etc. "The Shipment" and "Piss on Your Grave" are, musically, my favorite cuts with the harmonica in the former and the horns on the latter. So buy, beg, borrow, or STEAL this album.

This is hip-hop.......2003-12-02

If this listing was for the single of Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night, the price would still be a bargain. Luckily for both reviewer and reader, there is much more to this album than that cut.

There has been a long history of commercial critique in hip-hop that is normally overwhelmed by rather bland rappers seeking scrilla. From time to time more conscious tracks and rappers come to the forefront. Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash, Whodini and others achieved commercial success with singles focusing on social issues. Steal This Album tackles more topics than Warren Sapp does top picks. In a just world The Coup would be in that group. In a just world though, The Coup wouldn't have had to make this album.

When Adolf Eichmann was convicted in 1961 for his role in the genocide against Jews, Sinti, Romani and others, he spoke this in defense:

I understand the demand for atonement for the crimes which were perpetrated against the Jews. The witnesses' statements here in the Court made my limbs go numb once again, just as they went numb when once, acting on orders, I had to look at the atrocities. It was my misfortune to become entangled in these atrocities. But these misdeeds did not happen according to my wishes.

On The Repo Man Sings for You (feat. Del the Funkee Homosapien), The Coup have a look at this type of moral rejection of responsibility for one's actions. The differences between a Repo Man and Eichmann are only in scale and in details as is made clear in different words on this track. Boots isn't misguided though in his indictment of the Repo, he sees as well the hand behind it, "Banks that give the loan figure - damn, in the worst case we makin money cause we had it in the first place".

This album is full of similarly incisive critiques of a variety of life's rigged trials. Whether discussing relative pride and arbitrary assumptions of superiority (Cars & Shoes), the po-po's effect on the respiratory system (Breathing Apparatus), or having a nostalgic look at how a poor kid got into shows (Sneakin' In), Steal This Album provides a listening experience like few, if any albums can. The production on the album is some of the best of the 1990's. A good portion of it is derived from funk but it is unique throughout. The production gives proper time for some serious scratchin' as well. Some excellent bass and guitar lines fill out the drums, horns, and whatever else has been laid down on the beat. This album is not without moments of brevity though. Piss On Your Grave is kind of a guilty indulgence for the revolutionary who has always wanted to step on Washington's grave and lets loose with bodily waste.

There are so many exceptional tracks on this album it is absurd to me that one can actually stick out as the best. Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night is THE track on the album. If there is another cut in hip-hop that is better by any margin worth noting, I have yet to hear it. Tearing down whatever idea is behind Pimp Chic, Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night describes pimping from the perspective of a nine-year-old son of a prostitute. Even beyond having a rhyme scheme that is über-fresh, this track exemplifies the unification of art and message. There is no abstract nicety nor didactic lecture to be found here. Instead one finds a piece of art with a message woven intricately into it. One doesn't have to sympathize with The Coup's Marxist philosophy to be moved by this track. This is as good as it gets.

The live Cd is recorded at a low quality. It does capture the energy of The Coup's live show though. The second half of the studio CD is great. Viva la Revolucion! Right on Boots & Pam!

this cd proves once and for all that system's mediocre is better than alot of other bands' best. most of these songs could've and sholud've made the cut on any of SOAD's studio albums. good buy

This is defenitly the best SOAD ( system of a down)cd since toxicity. If u like SOAD u will love this cd. What more can i say besides that it flipin rocks.

grunge-punk-metal with a political conscience.......2002-12-24

This is an energetic metal CD informed by punk and grunge. Songs criticize the system, advertising, gun laws and warmongers. There's probably an anti-pollution/pro-baby seals cut, but I missed it; nevertheless, System of a Down comes off less dogmatic and preachy than brother-politicos Rage Against the Machine. Machine gun drums, bass far forward and lots of tempo changes invite comparisons to Thinking Fellers, Tool or Slint and, as with any good metal album, there are a couple of pleasant ballads too. Very enjoyable.

System does it again.......2002-12-20

When I first became a SOAD fan, I bought Toxicity first. It was a great album so then I tried their 1998 debut release, and I was exposed to their deep inner self. Then I got this new album and I must say that System has again enthralled me. Each song may start out similar but, once things get going, they are all genuine in themselves.

Chic 'N' Stu - Weird song with a catchy chorus. What a splendid pie!! Pizza pizza pie!! I don't know what Serj is blathering about but I like it heh

Innervision - My sister was the first to tell me about this and I downloaded it. It seemed amazing when it was the only song I'd heard but, when I bought the whole CD, it was left in the dust as the melodic tunes of every other track began to catch my interest more

Bubbles - Short and sweet. This one didn't seem to get much hype but it was awesome though. It's not deep or dark. It's just fun and energetic

Boom! - Serj really managed to prevail in this song with his monotonous tone of voice in the beginning as the wild music is playing in the background. The chorus is nothing too special though

Nuguns - This is probably the song I've given the least amount of listens to even though it is quite good

A.D.D. - The three letters stand for American Dream Denial. I love the chorus to this one. It's one of my favorites

Mr. Jack - I just caught on to this song today. It's the longest track and yet it's only over four minutes

I-E-A-I-A-I-O - System seems to do good at choruses. And this one is enchanting. And we light up the skyyy...

36 - The song is called 36 but it's 46 seconds long. Cool music but the message seems to oppress television

Pictures - The music in this one rocks. And I love it when Daron jumps in at the end and repeats Serj's every phrase in a scream. Away (away!) gold dust (gold dust!)

Highway Song - I didn't pay much attention to this at first. But it's really melodic so I caught on fast

**** the System - It's alright. Nothing to put too much attention to

Ego Brain - System unleashes their soft side. The opening music sounds like the song Toxicity but everything quickly changes. The music, the flow, the message, it's all done perfectly in this track

Thetawaves - It starts out mediocre but as soon as you hear the chorus (Time feels like a midnight ride, finality waits outside, weeping in perplexity's arms, caressing our smiles inside) then you will be hooked

Roulette - Very calm, very soothing. This is not like normal System and that's what I like about it. They're trying to bring out different kinds of music

I picked this one up in a reject bin and it was a real surprise. It's packed with interesting artists and obscure, interesting material. Everything from John McLaughlin to The Residents. Even has a great live version of Fire (Jimi Hendrix, of course). There's probably nothing new to people familiar with individual artists on the disc but there's such a huge mix of artists all but the most hard core hunter and gatherers will find someone or something new. Definitely worth a listen - just to find new artists to check out.

stretch out, kids! .......2005-12-27

Available through the disc chop shops for under a buck, this one (as well as #1 and #3) are well worth the pittance you have to cough up to get them. Sure, half the disc ends up being a throwaway but there's such variety it's worth skipping the ones that drive you crazy to find something new. This one's got everything from Beausoleil, Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, Poto Doudongo, both Zappas, and The Duke. Take a chance, you wuss!
