Through lead-singer strife and domestic blisters, the Crüe have endured. Greatest Hits is a breather for the group and provides an opportunity to look back at the construction and destruction of this much-maligned multimillion-record-selling ensemble. Sure, much of what's here overlaps with Decade of Decadence, but we do get three tunes from Generation Swine ("Glitter" receives a tender remix) and an eight-panel foldout booklet with essays from each of the rug rats. Most important, two new tracks--"Bitter Pill" and "Enslaved"--feature golden-boy knob twiddler Bob Rock, who oversees two no-nonsense, no-electronics blasts through the candy-metal past. The future looks glam, indeed. --Martin Popoff

4 out of 5 stars Good but not Great.......2007-07-19

This is a solid Crue compilation, but doesn't floor you on the whole. Most of the big hits are here, but they're kind of diluted by some forgettable and newer stuff. Sorry, guys, your heyday was the 80s and early 90s. Also, the order in which the songs were put on the disc somehow doesn't seem quite right. This is a good disc for 80s heavy metal fans, but it won't blow you away. The 4 star rating is mainly thanks to the quality of the individual good songs. After all, it can't be denied that the Crue were leaders of 80s metal and put out some of the most monster hits of that time.

3 out of 5 stars Ehhh, so-so..........2007-04-19

Don't get me wrong. I love Motley Crue, but this CD didn't do them justice. I bought it because I was longing to hear "Home Sweet Home", but I should have saved my money and just downloaded the song instead. This CD is not horrible, just not great. In hind sight,I just should have purchased the "Theatre of Pain" album instead.

5 out of 5 stars Afraid.......2007-03-20

As a police interrogator, I employ many techniques. From bright lights to inriminating evidence, I use any tool at hand. My most usefull weapon is Motley Crue's greatest hits. Usually 2 minutes into "Glitter" they crack. Weeping and collapsing into a pile in the corner, they'll confess to anything, even if it's made up. (The Isreali diamond heist? The Brinks job on St. Patricks?)

The relief in their tear stained eyes is palpable. They want to live again. Just call me Dr. Feelgood. Got a drug dealing gang of toughs that won't turn on each other? Play "Enslaved" and they'll fold like Superman on laundry day.

Take it from me, you can count on the crew to make bad guys "Afraid."

5 out of 5 stars still smokin' in any room.......2007-02-05

4 out of 5 stars Nice Lock of Hair-Just a Sampling of the Crue's Best.......2006-08-30

Okay, hair metal gets it's share of knocks and t'maters by metal snobs, but guys this is toe tapping stuff that still stirs Metaldiva's soul.

There are several of the favorite tracks over the bands' modestly long, admittedly choppy career. However, there are quite a few that were really good and funny like "She Goes Down" from "Dr. Feelgood" for example, that did not make the cut and others like the new "Bitter Pill" and "Enslaved" that never piqued my interest. It's all there from their heyday and all the guys pitched in, if separately and apart from each other, with letters and messages to us and each other.

Motley Crue is living proof that if your band has an excellent drummer-Tommy Lee and talented bassist-Mick Mars and creative guitarist-Nikki Sixx, it doesn't matter what your singer sounds like, you can have a hit making band. However, loving Vince Neil as I do, no one can argue that his former stage presence and his vocals were well matched with the music as a whole. They are also an inspiration to their fans that have fallen into drugs and despair, by going through their separate recoveries and rebirths. All of us watching are hopeful for positive progress with Mick's illness. After all this time on the scene bands like this and their members feel like extended family and you just want to wish them the best.

After this last tour they all seemed to scatter and go on with other endeavors, but the new tour with Aerosmith ought to be a hoot. They all sweat a little more and there's more of them to love, but they are still rockin'.

I have to wonder about more great music we may missed out on and never got written because of all the interpersonal issues and private tragedies that ultimately caused them to fall apart. We will never know, but this is the ultimate snapshot of a better days in which we all received the great gift of their artistic talents,if only for a brief time.

Metaldiva Sez: Great addition to any hair metal collection. It is short and left many great hits out, but is still great to listen to and remember when our hair was blown 4 inches higher than our heads. Great music from a great time in this genre..Get it home today..

3 out of 5 stars ...for nostalgic reasons!.......2003-02-25

I hadn't heard Motley Crue in many years but one day out of the blue, I found myself singing on "Smoking in the boys room". I couldn't get rid of the song in my head, so what to do? Yes, I went down town to try to get the album "Theater of pain" which featured the mentioned song. I couldn't find it (guess these guys don't sell too many albums these days...), but I stumble upon this "Greatest hits", maybe even a better choice (?).

But with hindsight, Motley Crue's fame and popularity seems to have been more about image and attitude than making good music. Most of the songs sounds very thin and the guitar sound is far from good (is Mick Mars playing in a tin barrel?). Vince Neil's singing abilities can sure be questioned and the same goes for skills in the writing department. Motley Crue were high priests of the dreadful L.A. metal scene that were doomed to collapse and leaving a permanent stigma.

"Smoking in the boys room" (a cover of course...) is still good, and some of the other songs can be listened to mainly for nostalgic value, but over all Motley Crue isn't a band that make you excited anymore. My point is that you should be aware of the fact that some music doesn't stand the test of time, and what you thought was cool, groovy or whatever some 15 years ago may be rather ridiculous today!

4 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits Motley Crue.......2003-01-11

Great compilation of tracks, but this is a band that can not get away with just a greatest hits. This is a band well worthy of a box set!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2002-07-26

After watching the hit t.v. show "Behind the Music," which happened to feature Motley Crue one time, as well as the new (soon-to-be-hit-show) "Driven," which also featured Motley Crue, I just HAD to run right out and purchase a copy of their brutal yet fun greatest hits. I'll tell you one thing, THESE GUYS ARE A TRAIN WRECK JUST WAITING TO HAPPEN!! At least that's what all these shows about them seem to suggest. As for this fun Greatest Hits album, it's got all the Motley you could ever want - AND MORE!! The songs about girls and excess will always be classic, but I prefer some of their more serious songs, the ones about changing yourself for the better and loving who you are.

Well, if you're up for some brutality and ballads all in one sitting, don't miss this batch of essential Crue hits. You won't be disappointed.

SEE YA' LATER!!

4 out of 5 stars Yes!.......2002-06-27

In some respects, I'm not really the right person for this review. I've never been a big fan of hair metal, but only a fool wouldn't recognize Motley Crue as the bad boys of rock in 1980s. These guys did it all! Their music was the soundtrack of true decadence, and this incredible hits collection is a sample of their sound: loud, dumb, and fun guitar rock. Their lyrical range sure doesn't go very far, but who cares? "Dr. Feelgood," "Looks That Kill," and "Smokin' in the Boys Room" are such undeniably guilty pleasures that have aged well. I totally cannot believe I'm writing this, and I'd never thought I'd live to the day I'd actually praise the Crue, but you should get your hands on this collection even if you're a casual listener like myself.

5 out of 5 stars Motley Crue - Take A Ride On The Wild Side.......2002-05-29

Motley Crue is truly a great band, whether you like it or not. They defined the era of which they played in, and they took everything to the next level, on and off stage. And their music is more than satisfying, not only with outstanding guitar-playing and perfect heavy metal vocals but also with powerful, bass-driven drumming from Tommy Lee. Overall, this Greatest Hits album is a collection of Motley Crue's biggest hits, as well as two new songs. The bottom line is, if you like hard rock and you like humorous but often serious vocals, this is the album you want.
