4 out of 5 stars Angela Gossow is beautiful...the Music is great, too!.......2007-02-19

Ever since Angela Gossow joined Arch Enemy in 2001, the band has moved in a postive direction. Doomsday Machine is Gossow's third studio album with Arch Enemy, and it is a great step forward in the band's career. Unfortunately, guitarist Christopher Amott chose to leave the band for personal reasons after the recording but Fredrik Akesson soon replaced him. Michael Amott's vision for Arch Enemy has continued with melodic Death Metal and Arch Enemy have made a great name for themselves with a relentless tour schedule after the recording of this album.

Doomsday Machine starts out with a great intro called Enter the Machine. Taking Back my Soul starts with great riffs, and once again Angela's vocals sound very powerful. Nemesis and My Apocalypse are the two main singles from this album. One of the best songs present is Mechanic God Creation. The song progresses very nicely and the riffs are unforgettable. Machtkamph is a fan favorite at live shows, and Slaves of Yesterday is the closer of the album.

After seeing Arch Enemy live numerous times since the release of Anthems of Rebellion, it is clear that this band has a lot of talent. Unfortunately, fans will not be able to see the Amott Brothers unleash hellish riffs and have solo duels on stage anymore. For those who have not viewed `Love Apocalypse,' please do it in the near future. Angela Gossow has a great stage performance and the band proves that they can perform at a top level. In my opinion, Wages of Sin is the opus of Arch Enemy, but this album is clearly a step forward from the Anthems of Rebellion release. Also, Angela Gossow is one good looking woman who can perform lead growling vocals better than a lot of men. If that will not get you to check out this band, than I do not know what will. Enjoy!

There are 2 sides of the legacy of Arch Enemy through my observations! Their is Johan's side (former vocalist) and Angela's side. Either way, i'm on no one's side! I like AE with both singers, different but still rocks balls! There's a lot of immaturity in some of the fans, and here's why I see it that way...If you're on Johans's side, you're true to the underground, you're a "true metal head"...but, if you're on Angela's side, you're "poser" or a "mallcore kid"(whatever the hell that means). To me, they just despise the change, and assume that AE searched for a vocalist to grasp the media attention that they DESERVE. So what if they did, Angela may be a blonde petite female, but she's got some lungs that some male metal vocalists lack! This album Doomsday Machine is a deluxe effort of good melodic death metal, amazing solo work, bold intensity, and great vocal range, to me Angela masters the art of coordinating highs and lows. As soon as the CD blurred the introduction I knew right away that this album was gonna blow my mind away, and I was right! I don't give a flip who criticizes my opinion because it stands SOLID! As for the previous efforts before Angela's appearance, they still have my attention and that will continue! Arch Enemy as a whole, before/after is just balls out METAL!!!

A supersexy female vocalist with such force in her voice she puts most male death vocalists to shame, Angela Gossow somehow manages to balance her undeniable power with lyrical clarity and an uncanny sense of melodicism. The guitarists play some Metallica-esque riffing that combines old school thrash and power metal with a new sound. The guitar solos are technical shred but also highly melodic and so memorable they stick in your head for days. The drumming is intense but also pushes the songs in a forward-moving groove. The songs demonstrate a good understanding of form and structure. They lyrics are empowering, and the chorus hooks are so catchy they rival the best classic metal sing along songs even with the death vocals. This band is everything you could want if you're a fan of melodic, thrash-influenced, uplifting death metal.

5 out of 5 stars Before "Jaws" there was the "Doomsday Machine"..........2007-05-18

Steven Spielberg's Jaws has one of the most recognizable movie themes ever..the shark theme. But the "da-dum da-dum" music that made John Williams's career was already done ten years earlier...and is on this on this soundtrack.

The Star Trek episode The Doomsday Machine featured an ominous machine was the sci fi equivalent of a giant shark: a silent, big, grey behemoth that swallowed spaceships whole. The tension was established via the soundtrack by a simple "da-dum" theme. Like "Jaws", it would start slowly and softly and gradually turn up the tempo and the volume.

I think "Doomsday Machine" is a great soundtrack by itself. "Amok Time" is a terrific companion...its a completely different sound with a sixties pseudo-spiritual approach. But the fight theme is a classic. Both of these soundtracks on a single CD make this one a winner.

Star Trek music is great if you like the television series. I grew up with Star Trek in the late 70's and 80's watching reruns and videos with my dad that he had recorded off of t.v. Two of my favorite episodes are featured here on "Volume 2". "The Doomsday Machine" and "Amok Time". These are classics of the Star Trek juggernaut. It is different just listening to the music. You understandably hear things that you otherwise would not hear while watching an episode. "Volume 2" sounds like it was recorded in the 60's. 1967 to be precise. What I mean to say is that when the music was recorded there were limitations as far as recoding equipment goes. It really sounds like a 1960's soundtrack but is unique in it's approach. As far as I know, this is not a remastered cd and I can tell. I wish they would have boosted up the levels and made it louder. A little more bass would make this a great sounding cd but don't let that stop you from buying it. It is a really great soundtrack that no sci-fi fan should be without.

Music composers Sol Kaplan and Gerald Fried are two of the better music writers for television back in the late 1960's. Both were famous for scores for other things (Kaplan for "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" and Fried for "Gilligan's Island"), but showed that they could create music for a then new project: Star Trek.

Kaplan's score for "The Doomsday Machine" emphasized what was going on in each scene, underscoring how tension packed the episode was when it was made in 1967. (With the Special Effects that are available now, if they ever redo Star Trek, this is one episode that would seriously "amp up" the tension!!)

Fried, on the other hand, used his impressive Jazz training to show Mr. Spock in his "pon farr" state, and also to give the previously never seen before Planet Vulcan an alien atmosphere. Of course, the famous music for the fight scene between Spock and Kirk has been imitated often, but never topped.

An excellent CD for music and Classic TV fans.

Neil Norman(executive producer), just keeps cranking them out...take for instance "STAR TREK:ORIGINAL TV SOUNDTRACK("The Cage" & "Where No Man Has Gone Before")(GNPD-8006)...the legendary Alexander Courage shares his talent for scoring with his famous Sci-Fi opening theme, every cue has the Courage signature.

For this "Volume Two" from episodes "THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE"(Kaplan) and "AMOK TIME"(Fried), the creator of Star Trek Gene Roddenberry chose two veterans Sol Kaplan and Gerald Fried...both composers use of full orchestra was both rewarding and beneficial to the plot and substance of the series...although Fried's cues were darker in nature, gave us a feeling transformation into another time and place...while Kaplan's composition showed the audience what loss and despair could do to any human being...a highlight is "THE PROCESSIONAL"(Track 20) and "THE CHALLENGE"(Track 21), memorable cues that leaves one remembering that particular episode of the series...both composers hit the mark...dead on.

You might enjoy other Star Trek albums from GNP Crescendo ~ "Star Trek:Original TV Series Sound Effects"(GNPD-8010)..."Star Trek:The Next Generation:Encounter At Farpoint"(GNPD-8012)..."Star Trek:The Next Generation Volume Two"(GNPD-8026)...all worthy of a good listen.

I was astonished to see this music actually available. Being somany, many years since the first production date, I would hardly haveexpected to find something preserved so accurately. This is, in fact aperfect recording. The music itself is really astonishing. Ratherthan an endless trundling out of the Star Trek theme, Sol Kaplan comesup with a collection of brilliant orchestral minatures in which hedisplays an absolute and total command of large scale orchestralwriting. I would guess his major influences would be Sibelius, Mahler,and probably Richard Strauss, but you would have to also certainlyinclude Edgar Varese and possibly Jacob Druckmann. Some of his ideasappear to spring from a probably uncatalogued collection of martialthemes, but his ability to paint vivid and powerful colours is likenothing I have heard before. Some of the themes reach really deep andwill endure for many decades to come. The way he ties in the StarTrek theme itself is very clever and elegant, making quite a trick inthe tail towards the end of the piece... What on earth has this dearfellow done since, or before? I am very, very impressed with this andwould absolutely recommend it to anyone, even classical music buffs.

I was happy with the cd because I contained some of the star trek music from the original series that I did not have before and thought was unavailable.

Other than the spoken word intro by "Capt. Kirk" I don't care much for the opening theme music and it is included on every soundtrack recording of the original series by default.

I was particularly interested in the music from "The Corbormite Maneuver". It had most of the music from that episode, but I was disappointed that one of the most important arrangements (in my mind) was missing. It makes me wonder who put the soundtrack together and what they were thinking. Maybe they had the "good enough for goverment work" attitude. Anyway, the arrangement I refer to is where spock first gets the alien manequin to come up on the viewer. The music also appears in "City on the edge of Forever" when the guardian starts playing back earth history. It probably appears in other places, but the real star trek geeks ought to know the music I at referring to.

The Charlie X portion of the soundtrack was quite the treat for me also. Again, it included music that I really liked that later appeared in other episodes.

The Doomsday Machine music was redundant because it appears on another soundtrack in full. On this soundtrack you only get a small portion of that episodes music.

The Mudd's Women section also has music that I like alot. However, It is one of my least favorite episodes even though I have always like the Harry Mudd character.

I just want to recomend this c.d.I am a big fan of the orginal Star Trek series and recently started buying the D.V.D.s and when I heard the music for the Corbomite Maneuver boy I just had to have it.
All the peices are excellent and I would recomend this album to any classical music lover.
Sadly these tv composers where not really accepted by the classical crowd but all to their loss not ours as because if these composers where obscure 19th centuary finds they would be climbing over each other to hear them.

Trust me you will enjoy them.

When listening to this music you can almost see the episode unspooling in your mind. I don't think there is a Star Trek fan out there who wouldn't want these recording in their collections. Recommended.

The most important thing to know about this CD is that, although it is newly recorded, it is extremely faithful to what you heard in the show. Fred Steiner re-created the original Star Trek orchestrations, especially for the tracks he composed back in 1966. You'd swear that The Corbomite Maneuver was from the original soundtrack, only with better audio quality. He was less precise in duplicating The Doomsday Machine by Sol Kaplan, but Steiner's version is good in it's own right. A definite buy for fans of the classic music.
