1984 [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
1984 was a successful record not only because it contained solid, catchy hard rock, but also because it incorporated synthesizers into the mix, the first metal album to do so to any serious extent. Although the advances in electronic music make this material sound dated now, it's still a highlight of Van Halen's career. Songs like "Jump" contain a pop element that gave 1984 mainstream appeal, and David Lee Roth turned the frontman role into an art form on songs such as "Panama," "Hot for Teacher," "Drop Dead Legs," and "I'll Wait." To a large extent, it was 1984 that set the standard for '80s pop metal, and David Lee Roth who set the standard (or takes the blame, depending on your point of view) for the aggressively good-time attitude most pop-metal bands took for their own. --Genevieve Williams

A good overview of Sting's radio hits and popular album tracks with only one major omission ("Mad About You"), Fields of Gold also offers three previously-unreleased songs. "This Cowboy Song" and "When We Dance" appear on no other album, while "We'll Be Together" is an alternate version. The import version of this collection offers a substantially different (and expanded) track listing, dropping "Fortress Around Your Heart," "Be Still My Beating Heart," and "Why Should I Cry for You"; and adding "Mad About You," "Nothing 'Bout Me," "Seven Days," "It's Probably Me," "Love is the Seventh Wave," and "Demolition Man." --Gavin McNett
Customer Reviews:
Great songs, where's vol. 2?.......2007-04-12
Sting left the Police and had a tremendously successful solo career. Lots of great songs are on this cd, I just wish a couple more had made it like "It's Probably Me", "Shape of My Heart", "Love is the 7th Wave", "Seven Days" and "Soul Cages". The songs on here are great so I want to give it 5 stars but Sting has released so many more good songs and albums since this that we really need a volume 2 and soon. But as far as the period that this compilation covers, it is a fine way to pick up his best material from those albums.
Its OK.......2007-02-14
Bought it for Feilds Of Gold the only song on it I really like.
Fields of Gold: The Best of Sting.......2007-01-17
What can I say. If you like Sting and his many styles, then this is a must have!
Sting is a Hero!.......2006-12-08
Best Sting collection ever includes most hits like Fields of gold
A must have highly recommended!
misleading at best.......2006-11-06
It's simply not the best of Sting '84-'94.
The version of We'll Be Together (a great song) is an alternate take (mix?), VASTLY inferior to the album / radio version. It's anemic. Lacks the punch. In a word -- sucks.
That you're not told this on the cover is misleading.
I really enjoy Mr. Sumner's music. All the other tunes are as they should be, and they are terrific. 4-5 stars. But don't buy this product if you expect to hear what you've heard on the album or the radio.

There's a popular movie trivia game called Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon whose rough hypothesis is that the actor is somehow the center of the cinematic universe. One doesn't get very far into the game without encountering Footloose. The film that seems destined to become an 80's camp classic (repressed Midwestern youth bravely fighting for their right to dance) was also a notable trailblazer in the pop song soundtrack marketing scam, i.e. line up a bunch of contemporary hit makers and have them cut a batch of songs that might not be germaine to the film's plot but will sell oodles of units. But damned if Footloose isn't a classic slice--for better or worse--of mid-'80s, album-oriented rock. This kind of instant era-compilation must make the folks at K-Tel very nervous. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24
If you like listening to songs played in the background of movies, go for this one. I am more of the score type of soundtrack buyer. The CD in a whole was enjoyable for a car ride, but not much more than that. I am still satisfied with my purchase though.
the burden of older recordings.......2007-01-09
I was a bit disappointed about this SACD. The sound quality is better then the original one but not that good compared to some other SACD's I own. The best one until now is by far 'Brothers in Arms' by Dire Straits. It is also based on a (20 years) old recording but you really get the feeling sitting next to Knopler when he tickles those strings.
better than the first.......2006-11-03
There are not many times that the remastered out does the original but this does and the added bonus of 4 tracks are a welcpme addition.
great music with great technology.......2006-10-29
This SACD is worth buying. Sound is better than it was eventhough it has only two channel.
FOOTLOOSE ~ A little too loose for me........2006-09-19
A great CD! However, it cannot compete with the hits from "FLASHDANCE".

great sound track.......2007-08-01
In a day and age of ITunes you would think that you could find the sound track to this cult classic. Thank goodness that I did find it on Amazon.com now when I'm walking my dogs I can rock out to Sorerer or Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young. Great digital sound.
Great Old Fashioned Fun.......2007-06-27
Michael Pare & Willem Dafoe really bring back the old days with their hero versus villain story. Each time that I watch this movie, I am captured by the music as time passes quickly as I am on the edge of my seat awaiting the next move.
Brings back great memories..........2007-06-08
I loved this movie back when it came out and I still do. Great music for those of us growing up in the 80's. Would recommend this to anyone wanting to reminisce. Diane Lane, Michael Pare, and Willem Dafoe are great. Hope you enjoy as much as I did.
Underestimated brilliance.......2007-05-27
This CD is fantastic. The feel of the songs match the mood of the film. I invite you all to listen to it and tell me you don't get a feel good wave running through you. Quite simply ... exceptional
Terrific Album.......2007-05-16
A very enjoyable album. The music is powerful, exciting and fun. It was a favorite when I watched the film and it has remained one for me.

i have wanted to get this for awhile now..so i figured i ordered something for my husband i may as well order this one for me..
there is nothing like the original miami vice.....love it...
Miami Vice still as nice.......2007-01-26
When you listen to this CD, it brings back the actual feeling of the 80's, as well as the program itself. The songs are relevant even in today's world. The instrumentals by Jan Hammer are truly masterpieces!
Standing the test of time.......2006-09-13
I first got this on LP and listened to it often. I later got it on CD because it is a classic soundtrack and an essential piece for an 80's music collection.
Almost half the tracks on here are instrumental, but all of them are great. Most people probably bought this CD for the first track (The Original Miami Vice Theme). "Miami Vice" is an extended remix of the original theme and is also good. "Evan" and "Flashback" are softer tunes, which are also enjoyable. But so that one doesn't get to relaxed, "Chase" is set between them and this tune really moves.
The vocal tracks are some classic tunes, as a number of them can be found on other CD's. "In the Air Tonight" is one of Phil Collins' best tunes. It was even remade for the new Miami Vice Move soundtrack. "Smuggler's Blues" & "You Belong to the City" speak clearly about the life portrayed in the Miami Vice series.
"Vice" is rap song, which can teach you one of two things. It's either a prerequisite on what you will deal with as a cop or a it's crash-course for the aspiring gangsta. "Own The Night" is a decent song, but not my favorite. I'm not a big fan of Better Be Good To Me, but liking all but 1 track on a CD is probably a rarity for most people, as I know it is for me.
Few soundtracks have lasted the way this one has. It is a must for the 80's music fan.
Nice.......2006-03-03
I thought this CD was only Jan Hammer themes but find out there are more musics of other people, I would be more happy if this CD were only Jan Hammer musics.

The hard-rocking Cult have come along way from the early Native American stylings of Dreamtime and the dodgy goth tendencies evident on their classic album, Love. Blame Rick Rubin, who helmed Electric and steered them down the rocky road to metal heaven. This best-of collection brings together tracks from the span of their career, and is a worthy testament to their rites of passage. "She Sells Sanctuary" sounds as refreshing as it did in 1985. There are some dubious inclusions from the twilight years of their career, such as "Star" and "Coming Down (Drug Tongue)," but when they have to hold their own alongside "Fire Woman" and "Lil' Devil" it's hardly surprising that they are found wanting. --Helen Marquis

Customer Reviews:
Join The Cult!!!!.......2007-05-19
This CD is simply excellent! You get exactly what you pay for, so you can't possibly complain. Indeed, the title says it all: you get all the singles that you know and love from their albums between 1984 and 1995 AND you also get the singles that were NOT included in their albums, namely "Resurrection Joe" (the 80's version of Bowie's "Aladdin Sane", even going as far as including the same type of dissonant piano in the background), "The Witch" and "In the Clouds", all excellent additions.
If you're a long time fan of The Cult, I think you'll appreciate this compilation because it does include pretty much all songs you'd expect it to have, and the compilation is well made too: with a great song selection, it's hard to go wrong, and this compilation also benefits from a great track sequence, beginning with "She Sells Sanctuary" and ending with "Sweet Soul Sister". It just flows like a breeze!!! And the sound is great as well.
But I think that those looking for an introduction to The Cult are probably the ones that will enjoy this compilation the most: most people who listen to rock are familiar with at least a few songs from the band, such as "She Sells Sanctuary", "Love Removal Machine", "Sweet Soul Sister", "Edie (Ciao Baby)" and/or "Fire Woman". These songs are all here, but in addition to those favorites, you also get a wealth of extra material that is just as strong: "Sun King", "Rain", "Revolution", "Wild Flower", "Heart of Soul" and all the others included here are sure to appeal to those occasional fans that know the band only by its most popular material. My only possible observation/warning (not really a complaint...) is about the "versions" used, meaning the "single edit" thing: if you know The Cult solely by the their singles in rotation in classic rock radio, this point is not gonna be relevant to you at all (since these are the versions that normally receive airplay), but if you're a long time, die hard and finnicky fan...well, I'll leave it up to you to decide...in fairness, it was a compromise: using the radio edits meant that they were able to include ALL the singles, as the title of the compilation accurately states...
The Cult enjoyed a golden age of sorts between the release of "Electric" and the end of the "Sonic Temple" tour, simply because this was their most straight forward period, where their music, their songs, their sound and their albums (and even their image) were reduced to the most basic and this sound hit a home in the US. Before and after, The Cult managed to keep a healthy following in their native UK and other parts of the world, but struggled to keep a strong fan base in the US. This was due to a simple fact: The Cult kept evolving, reshaping their sound and their image (just have a look at their pictures in the booklet!) as their mood took them, and that was extremely difficult for fans to accept. I remember that the first song I ever heard from them was "Love Removal Machine", which I loved, and then the next thing was "Revolution"...I was a bit confused by the abrupt changes, but ultimately the quality of their music was enough to put my doubts to rest.
Many people liken their sound to a "heavy U2", and while I agree that that generalization is as accurate as any generalization can be, it applies to the band's first 2 records, "Dreamtime" and "Love", but definitely NOT to their latter output, such as the Rick Rubin produced "Electric" which harkens back to classic AC/DC, or "Sonic Temple" and some its "Zeppelin meets The Doors" overtones. Some of that early sound came back with "Ceremony" and "The Cult", but for the most part, this band simply shifted its sound every so often, which was good from an artistic point of view, but it probably backfired from a commercial perspective. For instance, right now in 2007, the band is back and in "heavy metal" mode: two guitars, bass, vocals and their heaviest drummer yet (John Tempesta, of Testament/White Zombie fame).
Bottom Line: If you're a Cult diehard, you'll enjoy this because it is very well made. If you are more of an occasional fan familiar with their "hits" and in search for a little more, this is the perfect place to start: having enjoyed their most recognizable tunes, you're sure to like the material included here. You can't go wrong with this purchase, so go ahead, dig in and join The Cult!
CD Rocked HARD.......2007-05-16
A great compilation CD...it ROCKED, if you want to experience classic Goth Rock, this is a must have.
The best of The Cult on one disc.......2007-03-27
THE BAND: Ian Astbury (vocals) and Billy Duffy (guitars) are/were the main members of The Cult. They've had a host of others helping in the way of other guitarists, keyboardists, bassists, and drummers.... mainly Jaime Stewart (guitar, bass), James Stevenson (guitar), Bob Rock (guitar, keyboards), John Sinclair (keyboards), Ritchie Zito (keyboards), John Webster (keyboards), Kinley Wolfe (bass), Craig Adams (bass), Charley Drayton (bass), Nigel Preston (drums), Matt Sorum (drums), Scott Garrett (drums), Michael Lee (drums), and Mickey Curry (drums).
THE DISC: (2000) 19 tracks clocking in at approximately 77 minutes. Included with the disc is a 14-page booklet containing a 6-page intro to the band and their albums, song titles/credits (no lyrics), band photos, what songs came from which albums and the year released. The songs here follow the band from 1984-1995 (as the title states). Remastered sound. Label - Beggars Banquet.
ALBUM REPRESENTATION: Dreamtime (2 songs), Love (3), Electric (3), Sonic Temple (4), Ceremony (2), The Cult (2), Unreleased (3).
COMMENTS: Still trying to figure out why The Cult has 2 differently named compilations with only 1 song being the difference between the two (this disc, and 1996's "High Octane Cult")... the two songs "Go West" (from "The Singles" album) and "Beauty's On The Street" (from "High Octane") are both simply unimportant songs. The music on "The Singles" is digitally remastered so if I'm standing in the music store with both in hand, I'll choose this one. I read decades ago that Astbury and Duffy were difficult to get along with... perhaps this is why they couldn't get 2-3 additional members to stay on a more permanent basis... seems like every album there was different personnel on supporting instruments (bass/keyboards/drums). With that being said, Astbury and Duffy wrote some great music. Covering several spectrums - rock, hard rock (some classified as metal, but I'll call it borderline metal), punk, psychedelic, and alternative. The studio albums were up and down... often times mixing some wonderful melodies, hard rocking songs, and a few oddballs that were just plain weird (and some annoying). Astbury's distinctive vocals was the first thing that hooked me in. Duffy's guitar licks were simple, but catchy (he's no Satriani, Malsteen, or Vai). As far as this compilation goes, the songs chosen are dead on accurate... I couldn't have picked them better myself. The staples are all here - including "She Sells Sanctuary", "Fire Woman", "Love Removal Machine", "Sweet Soul Sister", "Lil' Devil", "Edie (Ciao Baby)", etc. The tracks from "Dreamtime" (1984) and "Love" (1985) are very 80's in style (they could easily be inserted to any number of John Huges' movies..."16 Candles", "Breakfast Club", "Pretty In Pink"... almost Duran Duran or Haircut 100 in flavor. The later 80's and into the 90's saw The Cult in hard rock form. Even though "Sonic Temple" was the band's most commercially successful release (featuring 4 decent hits), "Electric" was always my favorite of theirs due to the break-through songs "Love Removal machine", "Lil' Devil" and "Wild Flower". The Cult always had their own sound, but if I had to put them into a category... they'd be in with the likes of Billy Idol, The Pretenders, and the Clash. With so many band member changes, each album had a slightly different feel to it... to me, this was intriguing aspect of The Cult's sound and their albums. Some great tunes here from an underrated British band. "The Singles 1984-95" is a great intro to Astbury and Duffy's "Cult" (5 stars).
Pure Cult The Singles 1984-1995 - Good..........2007-01-10
Pure Cult The Singles 1984-1995 is a good addition for anyone that is forming a "Music that I will be listening to 20 years from now" library. I'll be keeping it for life. I finally have Wild Flower & Lil Devil on CD and I am not letting go of this CD for those two reasons for starters!
Pure Cult: The Singles 1984-1995.......2006-11-10
Memories of "big hair" 80's and the mullet. Great album, a band ahead of its time that didn't fit the 80's pop metal scene.

Relax, The Synthesizers Sound Great.......2007-07-09
Whenever you talk about synthesizers these days, most people remember the synth-pop sounds of acts from the 80's like Thomas Dolby and Information Society. Few of them recall (at least at first) Van Halen, who merged synthesizer sounds with sonic guitar solos on "1984." Van Halen made it okay for hard rock bands to use synthesizers. Sure, bands like STYX incorporated such instruments into their music, but they weren't considered rock gods on the same level as Eddie and Co.
With this album came the mega-hit, "Jump." It brought Van Halen's sound into the mainstream radio arena and exposed them to a lot of people who didn't listen to rock music up to that point. It also gave us "Panama," "I'll Wait," "Drop Dead Legs" and "Girl Gone Bad." Sure to remind us that these synthesizing boys still know how to be bad, Alex Van Halen hits the listener with a barrage of drums to open up my personal favorite on this album, "Hot For Teacher." This song is almost a kick in the teeth compared to the rest of the album. It's nothing more than dirty fun and pure rock n' roll.
This is definitely one of the best albums ever cranked out by Van Halen before Sammy Hagar took the frontman position. Heck, it's one of the best Van Halen albums ever. I highly recommend it to any fan of true hard rock music. It's a great album.
The epitome of 80s hard rock.......2007-06-17
What is probably the most creative Van Halen album, and certainly their best, 1984 is the hands down epitome of 80s hard rock, and all 80s music in general. There isn't an ounce of filler to be found on the record, and the intro to the album, the title song, really provides the listener with an idea of the mood of the album and a sample of what they're going to hear. The follow up to this song, the famous [and infamous] "Jump," also finds the band at the peak of their creativity. It features guitarist Eddie Van Halen on a synthesizer keyboard, and though he plays this throughout almost the entire song, there is still an awesome, underrated guitar solo within it. The speeding power chords of "Panama" are also what represent Van Halen's masterful performances/songwriting. Said song has a sweet and very memorable main riff, and some of the best lyrics you'll ever hear. The guitar solo is also one of Eddie Van Halen's finest pieces, and ever since the release of this album the song has become a concert staple with current singer Sammy Hagar. "Top Jimmy" is really a standout from the album--the gloomy, eerie beginning guitar licks surprise the listener as the song sets into a humorous atmosphere, with yet another awesome Hendrix-esque guitar solo to boot. "Drop Dead Legs" also shows what an excellent guitarist Eddie Van Halen can be, as the awestriking solo takes up nearly half of the song. Of course Van Halen's final album with original lead singer "Diamond" David Lee Roth wouldn't be the same without the sixth track, "Hot for Teacher". The song starts out with heavy bass drumming by Eddie's brother Alex, and then goes into a guitar attack, coming close to the masterpiece solo "Eruption" from Van Halen's first album. The song's first minute leaves you with an imprssion of a skit and then strikes you with more memorable verses and choruses by Roth. It is also another powerful song by the foursome. The experimental "I'll Wait" is another creative hit, with an intro of brass instruments and efficient vocals. "Girl Gone Bad" also deserves major credit, for without it, the album as a whole wouldn't have such a unique sound as it does. The finishing song, "House of Pain," is a very powerful and affective finish to the album. What was a leftover from the recording of the first album, it has an awesome intro of deep power and bar chords, and a clean, fade-into-the-distance ending. Overall, Van Halen's sixth studio album and final album with their original singer is a classic in every way, and is one of the top 100 greatest albums of all time, in my opinion. You'll have a very memorable and hard-rocking good time listening to this record.
Extremely boring and forgettable.......2007-05-29
This is the most overrated Van Halen album. Lot's of the songs are simply boring, way too _________ poppy. ALl of the songs including Hot For Teacher are extremely overrated. 1984 was a weak collection of filler songs, filled with lame guitar riffs, Roth's worst lyrics and voice, ______ bass guitar, and pointless show-off _____. Alex Van Halen did some good drumming on Hot For Teacher and House of Pain, but that's it.
1984 has not stood the test of time. It's just a collection of pop songs. It's pointless, and it shows how self-indulgent a band can get. I just can't reccomend this cd at all. This is just as pointless and forgettable as other ________ cd's from that era, like Back In Black and Shout At The Devil. Van Halen was turning into a pop rock band, nothing else. It only got worse when Sammy Hagar showed up. Van Halen was completely ruined.
Want a better Van Halen cd? Both Van Halen 1 and 2, Diver Down, Fair Warning, and Women and Children First are all way superior to this overrated pop piece of ____. Or you could just click no and disagree.
3.5/10
Van Halen goes '80s.......2007-03-19
I have this album because no real Van Halen fan should be without it, but I honestly don't like it as much as the others from the classic (David Lee Roth) era. It's cool that Edward wanted to do something different or experimental by introducing a synthesizer to the band's sound, but making it more radio-friendly or poppy just didn't really do it for them. Diamond Dave's vocals have lost their luster by now and become less unique and more like yelling.
1984--A woozy synthesizer solo as an introduction to the album. It kind of says, "Welcome to the '80s". I don't otherwise see any value to this track.
Jump--One of the band's best-known, most popular songs ever, but one of the fluffier ones. Catchy and light enough to be allowed onto pop radio with one uninspiring guitar solo from Edward. Alex's drumming sounds too bland or like a drum machine.
Panama--Great song that would go very well on one of the first two albums. Alex pounds out a rhythm that lends itself perfectly to jumping up and down and punching the air in a concert setting. This song is a great combination of sex rock and allusions to fast cars, complete with engine sound effects during the very suggestive spoken-word bridge. Definitely the best song on the album.
Top Jimmy--Good old American punk-rock 'n' roll. One of a few songs that makes the band sound more punk-like but kind of a fun one.
Drop Dead Legs--A good struttin' song with good woogity, heavy distorted guitar and a deliberate, heavy drumbeat. The normally good vocal harmonies are weak here.
Hot For Teacher--One of the other punk-like songs that starts with a mad drum solo and continues into guitar shredding. This one is a lot of fun, as the title suggests, and includes a few vignettes recorded to sound like a few rowdy teenage boys acting up in a school setting.
I'll Wait--Sounds a lot like "Jump" but perhaps even fluffier. Heavy in synthesizer and the drumming is similarly boring.
Girl Gone Bad--Fast head-banging metal with some unexpected stops and starts; a better-planned, more interesting song than others on the album. It kind of reminds me of "Hot For Teacher". The emphasis seems to be more on interesting music than lyrics, which is fine.
House of Pain--Another song that's more musically progressive, with the lyrics and lead vocals kind of getting lost in the shuffle. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing. There's a great, fast, wild instrumental section that helps to balance out the fluff of earlier tracks. The song fades out on this instrumental part, which is more like a jam by this point.
Genius.......2007-03-01
I love all the tracks on this disc. Cant really say anything bad about "1984" because everything is well done. They deserve their classic status. My favorite track is "Hot for Teacher" with its creative drum opening and furious Eddy guitar intro. It's juvenile, but the other tracks get into really interesting stuff like "House" and "I'll Wait."

The soundtrack to the Jonathan Demme documentary, Stop Making Sense captures the Talking Heads live in 1984 on what would turn out to be their last major tour. This collection, and the film, is a true gift to the band's fans, a testament to the Heads' extraordinary talent, both in the studio and especially onstage. Frontman David Byrne infuses each song with a jolt of energy and drama that could only have come from a late-'70s art-school student. Now-classic tracks such as "Psycho Killer," "Girlfriend is Better," "Once in a Lifetime," "Take Me to the River," and "Burning Down the House" have never sounded better. This expanded 1999 reissue includes all nine of the original tracks, plus seven previously unheard cuts, including "Heaven," "Found a Job," and "Crosseyed and Painless." --Lorry Fleming

Probably the best concert ever preserved.......2007-02-19
Simply the single best set by any band in the history of rock and roll. I know there will be people out there who will point to some Dead concert that's only available on a third generation cassette, but this set is as hot as the Heads ever were. The expanded edition is a great gift to the world.
good Talking Heads record.......2006-02-20
i own this on vinyl and it's just good talking head songs live, although i have to say the original version of some songs are better but if you have the money i guess go for it but i recommend buying non live recordings.
Bigger is not always better.......2004-10-26
The original LP version of this was a mere 9 songs, and was absolutely brilliant. I remember playing it constantly, wearing it out much like my two album "The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads" double live album. I also got to see the concert film at some midnight show and was enthralled...a concert movie for people who liked music! I loved it so much that I eventually got David Byrne to sign the book that came with the album.
So I was really hyped to hear that the entire concert soundtrack was about to be reissued on CD. Seven extra songs! Warm with nostalgia, I finally bought the disc. Boy, was I let down. First, it isn't the whole concert. "I Zimbra" is particularly missed. Then, of all the crappy songs to include over that one, we have the Tom Tom Club and their SERIOUSLY dated "Genius Of Love."
One of the brilliant things about Talking Heads is that they may have been trend setters, but they were never trend mongers. The music sounds just as fresh today as it did when I slit the shrink wrap on the 1984 Album. But the Tom Tom Club was a lightweight side project that scored one novelty hit, and it sticks out like crayon smears on a DaVinci. I reach for the skip button just about everytime its lame, cliched, and oh so 80's stage patter starts to invade what used to be a flawless CD.
It takes what used to be a 5 star CD and knocks it down by one. It also provides continual proof that that not all unreleased tracks are really a "bonus." Since it has finally come out on a double disc, I strongly recommend the remastered and reissued "The Name Of This Band is Talking Heads" over this. At least the expanded tracks aren't an emarrassment.
One of the greatest live albums ever........2004-10-23
Jonathon Demme's 1984 concert film of the Talking Heads was an incredible experience. Sadly, when the original soundtrack was released, it contained only nine of the songs performed. Not only that, but they were entirely out of sequence, completely destroying the original purpose behind David Byrne's conception of the concert. Thank God they released this anniversary edition of the soundtrack, as this really does the film justice. Every song is here, and in its proper place, the way it was meant to be heard.
So, what is the big deal, you ask? Well, picture this. The soundtrack begins with "Psycho Killer," one of the first really big hits for the group. Instead of the entire band being onstage, David Byrne walks out with an acoustic guitar and a boom box. He presses PLAY on the box, which cues a drum program to begin playing. So the first song is just David Byrne singing and strumming his guitar, accompanied by pre-recorded percussion. For the next song, "Heaven," Byrne is joined onstage by bassist Tina Weymouth. Then Chris Frantz's drumset is wheeled out, and the three of them go into "Thank You For Sending Me an Angel." We finally hear some real drumming, not the predictable, computerized beats in "Psycho Killer." The album really begins to come alive. Then they go into "Found a Job," and things get more interesting. Byrne swaps his acoustic guitar for an electric, and lead guitarist Jerry Harrison comes out, meaning we now have two guitars. By the time the fifth track, "Slippery People," is underway, the entire band (including the extra musicians and backup singers) are on the stage, and now things are cooking. What happens over the remaining twelve tracks can only be described as an overload of the senses.
The purpose behind the concert was to provide a unique experience for the concert-goer, to create visual as well as aural art. Some of that sense is lost on the CD listener, but some of it remains. The songs were translated to disk beautifully, so that they still retain just about everything that made them a pleasure to listen to while watching the film. One can almost picture David Byrne running laps around the stage, dancing with the lamp, or wearing the big suit.
The concert resulting in the film and this album was performed shortly after the band released their 1983 album "Speaking in Tongues." So, needless to say, many of the songs you will hear are from that album. And I have to say that for each of them, I prefer the live version to the studio version. Each one of them sounds more vibrant, more full of life when performed on the stage. The improvisation on "Burning Down the House" is as good as it gets. Ditto "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)," which is one of the most beautiful things I've heard, and I don't even like love songs. The studio versions lack that extra energy. Their pulse is just too slow. This is never more true for "Life During Wartime," which is actually a song from 1979's "Fear of Music." But anyway, this song displays Byrne's tendency to perfectly mismatch music and lyrics. The pulsating beat of club rock flows beneath what I interpret to be a humourously disturbing tale of a country under martial law. The song should not work as well as it does, and yet somehow, they pull it off. Anyway, after hearing the live version of it, I can no longer listen to the studio version. Also noteworthy is the improvisation on "Crosseyed and Painless." The intro and the extended guitar solos are just the icing on the cake for that one!
If there is a bad song on this album, it would have to be the interlude by the Tom Tom Club (a solo project of Heads drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth). "Genius of Love" could have been a great song. The instrumentation is very good. Sadly, it's ruined by Frantz's raucous babbling. He's attempting to be random like David Byrne, but tragically, he's not good at it. Other than that, this album is solid gold. It demonstrates the full potential of live music, and sounds amazing while doing it. Whether you're a fan of the Talking Heads or not, this album belongs in your collection.
Great Improvement Over The Original Version.......2004-10-17
It's true, to really appreciate this album, you have to see the film. And that's no chore. Stop Making Sense is probably the best concert film ever made. It's hard to imagine just listening to the album without thinking of Byrne's amazing stage presence (in or out of the big suit).
The Special Edition is the entire film soundtrack (minus some stage banter and the cut performances of "Cities" and "I Zimbra"). Their imagination made Talking Heads one of the greatest live bands of all time. The songs are mostly from SPEAKING IN TONGUES, but they also include interesting and in some cases superior versions of songs from all of their albums prior to 1983 with the help of the Tom Tom Club.
In addition to STOP MAKING SENSE, I recommend the newly released CD version of THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS. Listening to both would map eight years of live performances and barely short of 4 hours of live material.

Great band, but songs are all redone.......2007-07-20
I guess I need to learn how to burn my own greatest hits CD, because I had no idea that hardly any of these songs are the versions from the original albums. In fact, many of the songs on this CD are cut shorter. I guess people don't realize the difference, because everyone seems to give such high ratings. I think that The Living Daylights is a HOT song, but this version, which was in the movie, sucks compared to the version that's on their Stay On These Roads CD. I can't imagine why they couldn't use THAT version in the movie, and why they couldn't put the same version in this CD. When I buy a "greatest hits" CD, I usually get the original recordings, and if they're different versions, it is mentioned on the cover. I don't know if Headlines and Deadlines is the same, but I heard it is.
took me back.......2007-01-10
I lost touch with the band, but this collection brought me back up to speed. I enjoyed them all.
An A-Ha Moment!.......2007-01-04
It's a shame that A-Ha never fully realized their star potential with American audiences. Other then the still charming "Take On Me" and the follow-up "The Sun Always Shines On TV" from their "Hunting High And Low" debut, their chart success stateside never matched the band's international superstardom. Which means that - as far as American audiences are concerned - neither of their best-of's has been issued here. I actually picked my copy of this up while on vacation in London. It was well worth it.
A-Ha were far more than their pretty faces on the MTV videos. (But to be the band that could lay credit to the "Take On Me" - or even the lesser known "Cry Wolf" - video.) Seven studio albums and world-wide sales of more than 60-thousand albums certainly vindicates that point. What most of us Yanks missed was the frequently inventive pop-music this trio turned out. They were masters of the confectionary ballad, with songs like "Manhattan Skyline," "Velvet" and "Stay On These Roads" masterworks of melodrama.
In their later albums, A-Ha was finding conflict within their group and the albums began to reflect the turmoil. (The CD also contains an honest recollection of the band's history.) The synths began to take a lower profile and more live (and livelier) recording began to unfold. While A-Ha was still making some cutting edge pop, a song like "Minor Earth Major Sky" is particularly dark. There is even a relatively faithful version of the Everly Brothers' "Crying In The Rain."
And then there is the matter of that voice. Morten Harket had a falsetto that rivaled Freddie Mercury's and certainly influenced singers like The Darkness' Justin Hawkins. It hit that impossibly high note in "Take On Me" but could also add to the drama of the band's shot at a James Bond theme, "The Living Daylights." Obviously hoping Bond would do for them what "A View To A Kill" did for Duran Duran, A-ha rocks it in a cinematic way, and it could possibly be both Harket's best vocal and the most under appreciated of all the James Bond movie themes.
Which about sums up this collection. There is some of the finest pop you've never heard here, new wave of otherwise. Terrifically re-mastered for this CD, A-Ha "The Singles - 1984/2004" showcases an under appreciated band who created some perfectly realized music, even without the sun shining on them in the US. (Come on Rhino - we know you can do it.)
overlooked band.......2006-11-15
Boy, I forgot about this band. What a treat to find them again. Great compilation of songs for those that don't want to purchase all their CD's. Great gift for that 80's lover, as well.
'The Sun Always Shines on POP music'.......2006-06-20
A-Ha burst onto our CD players in the early 80's with the infectious 'Take On Me' and the very MTV-friendly 'Music-Vid' that accompanied the track. Their first album spurned classic pop hits like 'Hunting High & Low' and 'The Sun Always Shines On TV'....and the scene was set. Typically, a band like this disappear after 3 albums but not A-Ha...They have matured and if you take time to discover, there is a lot more to them than pretty-boys & 3 minute pop tunes..Their later albums 'Lifelines', 'Analogue' and 'Minor Earth, Major Sky' prove that they are fine musicians that can produce finely crafted songs...ok, there are one or two throwaway tracks like 'Touchy' and 'Cry Wolf', but on the whole, it is a good way to get to know A-Ha and these two mediocre tracks still have their place....enjoy the music, but don't analyse the lyrics...it is pop music after all, designed to entertain !!

Great musical snapshots from the early 1980s.......2007-07-30
I listened to completely different kinds of music at the time, so I didn't have many memories attached to these songs. The musical quality of the songs is actually suprisingly good, and the mastering has been done well. This is a nice review of hits of the early 1980s. Ten songs per CD isn't much, so there could have been more songs from each year.
U have to own one if you were a teenager in 1984.......2001-12-10
This was during Xmas 1984. One lovely girl from Texas brought to Poland (this is where I live) the 10 cassetes pack with "The Best of Billboard - 1984". I still hear this music. Now I can buy a piece of it.
To anyone who was ...teen in 1984: you have to own this one. Don't tell me there is no music you remember from these years. It must be one at least. Remember the first girlfriend. The first kiss maybe? Yes! That's it!.
I want my MTV!.......2000-06-17
This set takes me back to the early days of MTV. Pac-Man fever, Atari and great times in my life. As a child of the 80s it was a special time and special music. This box set helps take you back from time to time!

Randy Newman's score for director Barry Levinson's 1984 adaptation of writer Bernard Malamud's baseball fable remains, like star Robert Redford's turn as the film's Roy Hobbs, somewhat mystic and decidedly larger than life. Newman's music flawlessly fuses overwrought Wagnerian grandeur with the more plaintive strains of Aaron Copland, arguably forming one of the film's most crucial narrative elements in the bargain. Perhaps because it's a score with a scale so broad and bold--the antithesis of Newman-the-songwriter's often terse, internalized musical monologues--the composer himself has since expressed reservations about the potent cues he's since dubbed "heromusik." Nonetheless, The Natural remains an impressive tribute to Newman's musical professionalism, even if his masterful craftsmanship produced something he's always seemed a bit wary of: a bona fide crowd pleaser. --Jerry McCulley

Moving, Spectacular - a true orchestral classic!!.......2005-08-10
Randy Newman? Wrote and performed "Short People" Part of Bachman Turner Overdrive if I recall..
However when put to the task of a soundtrack for a movie about a baseball "Natural" Mr. Newman pulled out all the stops. You'll hear the famous clips from this CD during a "best of" sports feature or maybe a biography of a great hero. It's a must have for a cinematic classical collector. The composition includes soft and pleasant textures like walking in a magnificient wheat field on a sunny day - some rinky dink 20's style jazz...a caliope rendition of "Take me out to the Ballgame".
Grab your favorite beverage or herbal remedy, get in your favorite easy chair, load the CD and crank it up.
You'll love it.
By far one of the best movie soundtracks ever composed.......2002-05-22
Randy Newman is known to the non-cinematically-obsessed public as the sourpuss composer and gravelly-voiced singer of the tart novelty hit "Short People," but here is the work for which he should have won his well-deserved Oscar (instead of for the trifle he composed for 2001's "Monsters, Inc.").
With "The Natural," which he not only composed but conducted, Newman manages the pretty neat trick of stepping into the enormous shoes left by Aaron Copland. Newman takes the perfectly American pasttime of baseball and melds it perfectly with the American penchant for youth, sunshine, nostalgia, and happy endings--all without a single instance of treacle or falsity. He sounds Coplandian here without sounding slavish. He soars on wings of his own making and utterly enriches the film "The Natural" with his music.
"Prologue 1915 - 1923" opens the soundtrack and deftly sketches the career Robert Redford's Roy Hobbs character had in the minors and then briefly in the majors, limning the energetic youth of the new baseball player followed by the slower, more minor-key weariness Hobbs experiences as he seems to lose his touch. With "Knock the Cover Off the Ball," Newman somehow captures a sparkly, sunstruck afternoon out in the middle of a baseball field, the fierce concentration needed to do the deed demanded in the title, and the gathering speed of the ball itself. In "Winning," the big band, swinging tune says it all. You need brass balls to survive this ball game, son, and the music handily underscores that rule without the aid of a single lyric.
Had Randy Newman never written another film score beyond 1984's "The Natural," he could easily and justly have rested on these fine laurels. We are lucky that he didn't.
A home run soundtrack! And I don't even like baseball........2000-01-28
This the most magical soundtrack I have every purchased! I personally think it is Randy Newman's best work and as far as soundtracks go I put it up there with anything by Nino Rota. The way Newman uses the strings and paces the songs one would swear he was the prodigal son of Aaron Copeland. Of course he isn't but like Copeland's operas he definitely knows how to compose music which feels Americana. You can almost see wheat fields blowing and you'll certainly want t a piece of Apple Pie after hearing the title song, "The Natural." A must for any lover of soundtracks.
Sweetly nostalgic, yet swingy and jazzy........1998-12-30
Great movie music! The main theme is sweetly nostalgic of a simpler time, and the "Majors" theme is swingy and jazzy. The slower parts are relaxing to listen to, and the faster parts are great to dance to. Highly recommended.
I love the music/inspirational and moving!.......1998-06-12
The music on this soundtrack is great. It is inspirational and moving, may take some time to grow on you. If you like the movie and have a taste for nostalgia and great instrumentals this is a great album. I listen to it all of the time.
