A talent woefully underserved by the term "singer-songwriter," Martin Sexton treads the same lonely path to greatness as Ben Harper. Sexton is building a loyal following drawn by the passion of his live shows. He is so willfully eclectic and confident that he may leave the new listener perplexed by the chopping and changing of idioms; he defies categorization in ways that give the reviewer a hard task in alerting would-be listeners. He sings in the style of a number of soul legends--high one minute, humming from his throat the next--then, as in "Where Did I Go Wrong with You," can croon with himself as accompaniment. He is a fine musician, playing all the guitars on this album, alongside session bassist Tony Levin and keyboard virtuoso David Sancious. He crafts a fine song, too. Among many highlights, the soulful introspection of "Real Man" stands out. One word of caution: the rollicking opener, "Angeline," is irritatingly catchy, but not typical of the rest of the album. --Rob Stewart

5 out of 5 stars Too good for his own good.......2006-02-16

Martin Sexton is so wonderfully talented and clearly has such a good time singing and playing that you forget just how difficult it is to do what he does. Ever expressive vocals, beautifully crafted songs and quirkily original lyrics make for a potent and completely entertaining album. You may not be able to place him in a specific musical slot, but why try? Just sit back and enjoy a singular talent that is a true force of nature. If only more singer/songwriters had this much to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent artist.......2005-05-07

First of all, I'm not easily impressed by most of the music out there these days; however, Sexton is certianly an exception. I heard one of Martin's songs (Angeline) on a Boston radio station as I was driving. I hadn't heard it before but it grabbed me and sent me on a quest to find out who this man was. I bought this album although I had only heard one song on it. The whole ablum impressed me. Since this purchase, I've seen him live several times and I've been blown away every time. His live perfomances truly capture his unique voice. This album is excellent, but his live album is my favorite.

4 out of 5 stars Sublimely funky and a really good time.......2003-06-05

If you have previous experience with Martin Sexton you'll find this album to be the most produced yet. Frequently high-production doesn't work well with accoustic singer-songwriter/folk artists but this one was done right. You will not be dissappointed!

If you are new to Martin Sexton and are into singer/songwriter artists then you will enjoy this album immensely. You could say that this is Sexton's cross over into radio friendly pop.

Familliar or not, you will love the general funk that pervades most of the songs on this disc and your head will inadvertantly start bobbing to the underlying funky beat.

5 out of 5 stars Like finding the pot of gold..........2003-05-05

If you are the kind of music lover who likes finding a hidden treasure...then you must already be listening to Martin Sexton. I first heard Martin on a great streaming public radio station, WYEP. ... Then I saw him live in Seattle. Then I bought every single cd he has, and copies for gifts as well. But WonderBar was the first cd I bought and still a big favorite.

Some reviewers seem to prefer his acoustic albums, but I disagree. I intentionally bought WonderBar first after seeing reviewers treat Patty Griffin's Flaming Red in the same way...like rocking out with a band is selling out? How silly. Hearing Martin with a full band is like sitting in the middle of a full garden in all its glory. I encourage you to buy ALL of his albums, but certainly don't miss this one! It is truly WONDER-full!

5 out of 5 stars beyond reproach.......2002-11-10

This album is absolutely wonderful. Contrary to Mr. Stewart's opinion, the first song, Angeline, is a foot-tapping extravaganza. Yes, there are no other songs like it on the rest of the album, however, it is not devoid of similarity to other tunes on the CD. "Free world" has a nice bounce in its step. The mellower songs are fantastic as well. This was my introduction to Mr. Sexton's work and I think he is an amazingly talented individual. I look forward to buying and listening to more of his works. I recommend it to anyone.
