More like a singles album.......2007-01-30
With Roger Waters' songs on this album clocking in at under half an hour, it is hard for for much filler to exist. But exist it does in what appears to be more background soundtrack than actual songs. The two real songs, Towers of Faith and Folded Flags, are top notch Waters solo efforts. I would place them in ranks with his best stuff on Amused to Death and better than anything on Radio K.A.O.S. , or at least equal to The powers that be or home. Folded Flags should have taken the place of The Tide is Turning on KAOS, I think it suits the darker mood of the album better. The two Waters songs are relatively easy to obtain by digital piracy. I am not saying you should go download them, that is simply a fact. Oh, and the bowie song is good too.

Promises Kept.......2005-12-01
Some months back Jonathan Lemalu was introduced to us with a collection of Opera Arias, a recording that showed great promise of an important voice but also one that raised questions about the durability of the vocal technique. He sounded promising: with this excellent recording he shows that those promises are being kept!
In an entertaining potpourri of English songs the handsome and charismatic New Zealand baritone proves that he can complete with the likes of Thomas Hampson and Bryn Terfel and while he has not yet the finesse that only comes with time (he is a young 29!), the communicative powers are clearly present.
Lemalu's voice is rich and dark when the music demands (as in Barber's 'Dover Beach' accompanied by the Belcea Quartet) and yet he can lighten the tone and color and take on the technically difficult light and airy tunes which abound on this recording. His astute and sensitive collaborator is Malcolm Martineau who provides just the right mood for each of the songs selected. He seems completely at ease in this medium and his enunciation is crisp and clear. He makes the listener feel assured that here is a new star on the rise in the bass-baritone cadre, He is a joy to hear! Recommended. Grady Harp, November 05
Third Time's a Charm for Larger-Than-Life Lemalu and His Transatlantic English Repertoire.......2005-11-14
Having just come home from Jonathan Lemalu's recital with pianist Malcolm Martineau in Berkeley, I am convinced that the New Zealand-born Samoan is fast moving to the front ranks among bass-baritone singers. His third solo disc, the second to be released in 2005, is further evidence of his burgeoning talent, this one focusing exclusively on an eclectic mix of English and American songs accompanied again by Martineau. With an ebullient personality that comes across on record as well as on stage, Lemalu has a large, rich voice capable of surprising nuance and particularly resonant in its middle and lower ranges. Only 29 years old, he carries a tone more callow than his more mature colleagues like Bryn Terfel, but Lemalu's more youthful sound, as well as his large-scale theatrical sense, is placed at a greater advantage with this program than in his previous opera arias disc. That's because the 25 tracks here are short pieces from a variety of sources ranging from poems about childhood to well-known passages from Shakespeare to off-kilter cabaret songs.
There was a tantalizing glimpse of Lemalu's affinity with English art songs on his 2002 debut recording, for example, John Ireland's strapping "Sea Fever". Here he tackles two more Ireland works with the melancholy swoon of "Santa Chiara" and the rollicking "When lights go rolling round the sky". Lemalu also tackles Roger Quilter's "Four Shakespeare Songs, Op. 30", with ease. He downshifts his powerful chest voice to enhance the open yearning of "Who is Silvia?", deliver the vocal pizzicato of "When the daffodils begin to peer", perform the sonorous "How should I your true love know?" and provide a confident reading of the advisory "Sigh No More, Ladies". As an intriguing contrast, Lemalu sings Gerald Finzi's more animated version of "Who Is Silvia?" written a decade after Quilter's, the second of a five-Shakespeare song cycle called "Let us garlands bring".
Lemalu achieves a particular depth of pathos on "Fear no more the heat o' the sun". Accompanied by the assured Belcea Quartet, Samuel Barber's "Dover Beach Op. 3", the longest continuous piece on the album at nearly eight minutes, is a moving and eloquent sea metaphor for finding love against the most dire of odds. The quartet shows up again to great effect on four highly atmospheric songs from George Butterworth's "Love blows as the wind blows" starting with the haunting "In the year that's come and gone" and ending with the reflective "On the way to Kew". Sounding very much like pieces from his epic "Peter Grimes", Benjamin Britten's "Tit for Tat" provides the source for three selections ideal for Lemalu's immaculate taste - the wistful "A Song of Enchantment", the mournful "Silver" and the more emphatically dramatic title song.
Richard Rodney Bennett provides three selections from "Songs Before Sleep" written expressly for Lemalu, all based on nursery rhymes, including the energetic "The Mouse and the Bumblebee" and the pensive "As I walked by myself". The comical side of Lemalu's personality pops out in William Bolcom's "Cabaret Songs", the first two bordering precariously on camp - the Kurt Weill-sounding "Black Max" about a dastardly pimp, the quixotic "George" about the life and death of a drag queen, and the moving "Waitin". This is an exquisite recording of a major talent that continues to grow.

More Nukes for Waters.......2004-06-12
I bought this album being a big Floyd fan ten years ago, and I spin it occasionally but not often. "When the Wind Blows" is a solid album, but not amazing by any stretch of the means. David Bowie's title track is decent and sung in his signature voice. The drum sound is pretty cool, almost tinny. I agree with everyone here that the Hugh Cornwell song is...well, corny. "The Brazilian" is a pretty cool instrumental found on Genesis' "Invisible Touch" album. The drum fills are pretty cool, and when the song comes together it's a powerful orchestration. Squeeze's contribution is okay, and Paul Hardcastle's funky smooth jazz instrumental sounds out of place on this album.
Now, for Roger Waters' contribution to this album. Still having not lived down nuclear holocaust scares from "Final Cut" and "Radio K.A.O.S." he continues here waiting for the button to be pushed. This makes him a great match for this project. Waters' provides half of the material for this soundtrack, but most of it is filler and samples. Nothing to really complement the man on. Again, I agree with everyone here that his best two tracks are "Russian Missile" and "Folded Flags." These cuts sound as if they belong on "Radio K.A.O.S.", but didn't make the final cut.
This is a hard album to find, and probably isn't worth finding unless you're a big Waters fan. His sound is still very Floydish, but for the amount of Waters on this album it may just be better to skip the effort of finding this disc. I mean, there is a reason they aren't pressing it anymore, and that it was never released in the US on anything but vinyl.
Awesome but Depressing.......2003-11-05
A friend of mine found this one in a used record store a few years ago. I listened to it and enjoyed the Roger Waters part. After some searching, I found the album for myself. Again I enjoyed it. The best part is of course the Roger Waters part (especially the first and last songs). The other songs are a good 80's retrospective but not as good as the Waters stuff.
It's a good album, albeit a bit depressing especially with the vocals from the movie interspersed. It's a very depressing subject.
My only wish is that a couple more of the Waters songs were included on the album, namely the one from the movie where all the different agencies were flying across the screen and the other one where the characters were waxing about WWII.
Anyways, after much more searching, I found it on CD which made me a happy camper.
What a waste of $.......2000-12-19
I am a huge PFloyd fan and I bought this Cd because of Roger Waters. This album is a waste of money and the only nice songs (2 of them) resemble in parts other songs done by Waters. Save your money!
Excellent Roger Waters Track.......2000-11-13
The only song I have heard off this cd is the 24 minute Roger Waters composition. But I will go ahead and review the album based on that song, because that is the main (only?) reason anyone still cares about this album.
As for the Roger track, I must say it is very good indeed. It starts out slowly but builds and eventually goes into the vocal part where we get some characteristically good and biting lyrics from Roger. This leads into an excellent guitar solo, and then to an equally excellent saxophone solo from Mel Collins. Then, the song goes into 10+ minutes of dialogue and noise, which isn't of much interest in itself, but syncs with the movie. Eventually, it leads to Folded Flags, the second "real" Waters song on this album. It features some nice acoustic guitar playing backed with an orchestra (or synth) and once again has another set of excellent lyrics as only Roger can deliver them. If you are a Roger Waters fan, my advice for you is to pick this extremely rare album up, it is worth it, because the track on here is better than anything Rog has done since leaving Pink Floyd, with the exception of Amused To Death. Like I said, I haven't heard the other songs, but they can't be anything more than icing on the cake.
good atmospheric music, 2 excellent roger waters songs.......2000-10-02
The Roger Waters music (23 minutes) is great even though it was mostly atmospheric music. If that was all that was on the CD, I'd give it 5 stars. However, the other music was not as good. The Genesis song was really good, the Bowie song was okay, and the other songs...were bad.So, I took off 1 star for them. But, if you want this CD because of Roger Waters, its worth it if you can find it...

Where have all the freemasons gone?.......2003-05-14
Creedle gone jazz! Well, not exactly, but with the addition of future 20th Congress saxman Cochemea Gastelum, SW4QW is often referred to as Creedle's "jazz" album even though it rocks just as hard, if not harder, than the first two. Sure the serial killer, exorcism and Manly Hall references are all gone, but this album is still as strange as they come. Film Co-work-co. would have been the obvious radio hit if there was any justice in this world (guitarist/vocalist Devon E. Levins remakes it on his new band's album The DaoSon For). The production work of Jehu's Mark Trombino and backing vocals of Pinback's Rob Crow are an added bonus. There is even a secret hidden track before the album even starts that sums the whole thing up in a few seconds (hit play then immediately hold down the rewind button).
The best thing to come out of San Diego. Period........2002-12-12
Not sure how to describe Creedle, even in today's multi-genre music. Think of the elaborate writing styles of Drive Like Jehu, the musical drive and ambission of John Zorn and a level of creativity that I've yet to see surpassed and you haven't even come close to the sounds of Creedle. This album was their last, as they broke up and moved on. If only "Co Work Co" had a video and a single on the radio; you would have already known about this band. Buy this album while you can.
The Creedle will Rock.......2001-12-29
Ok, not so much 'rock' on this albulm compared two their previous two masterpieces but a strong/funny/jazz-in-helly effort. if you arent a ... who still lives with your mom you will grow to like this albulm as much or more as 1/2 man and silent weapons. Its also half the price of the others if you are cheap. shut up and buy it. i actually got to see them play live in a LA dive and they were great. if they only played more shows.....
