5 out of 5 stars An Uplifting and Amazing Work.......2007-07-29

Brubeck's Mass setting using his signature 5/4 time is a successful marriage of traditional and contemporary, worship and celebration. The "Alleluia" alone is an incredible musical achievement. Brubeck her is clearly God's instrument - and a rare and virtuoso instrument he is!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful choral work + great jazz.......2007-02-09

This music may throw some people for a loop, as it did me at first, because it is a choral Mass and most of us don't realize that Dave composed choral pieces, with his wife doing the lyrics. This Mass was commissioned by 'Our Sunday Visitor' many years ago. It is absolutely beautiful! The operatic choral sections move into the jazz sections and are truly inspirational. My favorite songs are 'the Desert and the Parched Land/The Peace of Jerusalem' and 'All My Hope', which I can't get out of my head all day! Give them a listen.

2 out of 5 stars Lackluster Effort.......2004-05-05

I was very disappointed in this CD. This piece in no way compares with Brubeck's "Gates of Justice", which is spectacular. There are a few worthwhile moments for the soloists, but for the most part, the writing is uninspired.

4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Effort.......2002-07-23

"To Hope!" is Dave Brubeck's attempt at composing a mass, or Christian liturgy. The result is mixed. Unlike Vince Guaraldi's masterpiece "Grace Cathedral Concert," this is not a jazz piano mass. Instead, it is largely a contemporary-classical work, focused on vocals and traditional arrangements. It does, however, include several jazz passages, including one that swings almost like a '50s surf-rock record. Not everyone will like this recording, but every fan of jazz or contemporary sacred music should listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars A Celebration of Dave Brubecks Works.......2000-03-15

This CD truly shows the diversity of the genius composer Dave Brubeck. Also credit should to be given to Russell Gloud, the conductor for this CD. This working is one of the greatest pieces by Mr. Brubeck. I recommend this CD to any classical music or jazz fan

5 out of 5 stars Bitchin' Album.......2004-12-14

For the PWEI virigins, this is something that you have not heard before. It is a combination of rap and rock blended flawlessly into a medley of British quirkiness. Every song has a hook and none of them are forgetable. There is no filler on this album, every single song could be a single by itself. The music itself is not a specific genre, rather it draws from eclectic einfluences. Part of it is rap, part of it is rock, part of it is industrial, and part of it is metal. Samples weave in and out of the double vocal delivery, sang to the backdrop of drum machine Dr. Nightmare.
Threre is no way that I can explain the music, ultimately you have to experience it yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Boo Ya.......2004-01-23

This album ranks with De La Soul's first and Beasties' Paul's Boutique... and "Pump up the Volume" as a sampling Masterpiece. It's from an era where music could, if it was good enough, make you feel like you were bouncing between satellites, maybe high on something yet discovered. A brilliant album for the dawn of home satellites or for the end of the world... whatever. PWEI says "bring it on" full speed and with vigor. What a shame all the sampling lawyers had to step into this great musical genre, in which PWEI hit the hardest. They're just amazing. Their "Cure for Sanity" cd is probably as good, but takes repeated listens to grasp. "This is the Day" grabs your labels and shakes from the first listen, first beat.

5 out of 5 stars All purpose nostalgic party album.......2002-12-31

White boy Brit rap melded with a hard rock/punkish edge(almost Run DMCish with heavier emphasis on the riffage), loaded with pop cult samples, party philosophy, and a must hear recounting of James Brown's legendary police chase. Buy this and dance until your can falls off, cracker.

5 out of 5 stars Out of left field.......2002-04-21

When PWEI unleashed This Is The Day...This Is The Hour...This Is This in 1989 they brought a lot of ideas together at a time when music was fairly boring.

Going from a new wave past to this album's mixture of anglo rap and metal meets funk mix complete with sampled beats and loud guitars this was one of the first serious attempts to fuse rap to rock. It was exceptionally well done.

Standout tracks are Wise Up Sucker, Not Now James, We're Busy and Wake Up, Time To Die. PWEI show a political side that is laced with humor. The rapping works in it's own odd way, it's not exactly Public Enemy, but it fits well into the concept of the musical whole.

The beats are strong, the guitars are big and brash, this album rocks AND gets funky. Of course this concept was about a decade too early for the general public. It's a shame how neglected it still is. It has aged well, meaning it doesn't sound like a 13 year old record. Check out PWEI, give it a chance while keeping in mind it's not Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit. PWEI tend to be more arty and closer to a mixture of Manchester rock and hip hop.

This was way beyond most music of it's time and deserves to be heard. Vastly underrated.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2002-01-05

Remember back in the days when musicians would sample bits of songs and never have to worry about it? Ahh the good old days! Before techno really hit it big if you went to some of the more underground (i.e. non-yuppie) clubs you'd hear industrial music blasting from the speakers. PWEI was one of those bands. The album is a flurry of samples and other beats, guitars and any other noise they would think was cool. The result is wonderful. Not as heavy as Ministry or sinister as Skinny Puppy (think more like Meat Beat Manifesto circa 99%), this cd is what I guess you could classify as techno-industrial. This is a must have.

        5 out of 5 stars Feyer's CD is a must have.......2007-01-28

So I purchase my Nano and then easily transfer much of my "must have" music library to the 8 Mega Black Nano. The Nano makes me want to hear all my music again as I work out, etc. I ordered "must have" Feyer's Gershwin from Amazon and was lucky to get the Gershwin CD. If only they could remaster all his works onto CDs at a lower price than the $100 plus I paid. Feyer is a top addition and it reminds me of the Stanhope days and his music magic that I wish to briefly tell you.

In the latter 70s, the Stanhope weekends were a joy, buttressed by Feyer's music. He held court and the audience was captivated. He was an excellent pianist with excellent trills in the high octaves, and nice contrast with the lower ones. The Gershwin CD the piece "I Got Rhythm" reminds one of small flames jumping lightly on a log. So light, so elegant, so much in rhythm. I would take my "A" dates to the Stanhope, including my future wife of 20 plus years. After the Met Opera or ballet, I would take my dates to the Stanhope. Usually two Kier Royals, supper, wine, and dessert would accompany George's fine music. Such a rich repertory and bottomless request well that he knew with top piano skill!

Missing on the CD was his singing and funny remarks. I recall him playing `Thank Heavens For Little Girls"... they are so helpless, and then he would pick some women from the audience and repeat the word " helpless' and the everyone would laugh. My dates were the younger women in the Stanhope back then and he tended to look at my dates.....and made them feel like a princess

The Stanhope was a bit expensive but a classy place. With George, it was worth every penny. I think Gunnar ( spelling?) was the head waiter. They knew you and you did not have to ask for a certain drink as they knew your need before your request. Unlike today, waiters are more of errand boys to the kitchens. George also knew your favorites in songs.

One thing that is not obvious, despite my Ivy MBA and a good undergraduate degree, one does not learn in early years the basic American songs of Porter, Gershwin, etc. Some of my dates knew many of the words to these songs from their social events. Hence for me it was a pleasant discovery and made me grateful to the mastery of George. It opened one's appreciation to the very rich music heritage of America.

The CD in ADD format was very clear; no his; and, the accompanying musicians were well heard in CD. Enjoy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars One More Time.......2002-03-08

Anyone that likes solo piano, must have this one in their collection. Feyer was a superior pianist, and arranger. These are performances to LISTEN to. For alot less than a carton of ciggies, you can buy something good for you! Aloha

5 out of 5 stars George Feyer Plays George Gershwin.......2001-04-21

Hours sped like minutes when sitting next to the keyboard of Feyer's Piano in the Stanhope. I only wish all of his albums could be re-released and a new generation might experience this rare talent. He played with consummate skill, gentle humor and a panache that I've been unable to find anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars George Feyer Plays George Gershwin.......2000-12-26

This is undoubtedly one of the best recordings of popular Gershwin tunes. They are played with Feyer's european touch, but amazingly american in spirit. All his collections since 1951 ("Echoes of Paris", "Echoes of Broadway", "Echoes of Rome" etc.) should be re-mastered and released again, as well as his famous recordings collected in album "Cafe carlyle". It is a real music treasure.

5 out of 5 stars This is the happiest music making imaginable........1999-10-24

It's been more than 40 years since I first ran across George Feyer's "Echoes..." series of recordings on the Vox label (Echoes of Paris, Echoes of Vienna, etc.) Every month I check to see if by some miracle these recordings have been reissued, but I doubt they ever will because of their original label. In the meantime we will make do with this excellent George Gershwin album, which seems to me to come closer to his old recordings than the other stereo-era Feyer recordings now available. But will some company out there PLEASE reissue his old mono VOX recordings and spread joy through the world!

5 out of 5 stars The Club de Wash is dead. Long live the Club de Wash........2004-01-09

I Hate to Wake Up Sober in Nebraska is the classic song from this album ("not a tree to mar the landscape . . . miles and miles of empty range . . . I've got Jack Daniels on the dashboard in case my Jesus lets me down). Home of the Whales is lovely, and suitable for playing to babies or to kids, before, during, and after showing them picture books about whales. I would also recommend seeking the studio album "Free Hot Lunch! Studio Sessions." Apparently it is self-produced, as the insert for "Free Hot Lunch! Studio Sessions" does not list any distributer, etc. You can easily hunt for a new copy of it on Google. "Free Hot Lunch! Studio Sessions" features Jeff Berg, John Corning, and Jeff Laramie (collectively known as Free Hot Lunch), plus a host of other accompanying musicians, and contains I Hate To Wake Up Sober In Nebraska, but also Middle of a Love Song, Mambo Man, and the lovely Phenomenon of Love. Mambo Man is probably the only pop song where the subject matter is an accountant ("data all day, data all day, data all day . . . all day . . . all day. But at night I keep having these dreams!"). Recall that Jim Post also sings a beautiful version of Phenomenon of Love on his excellent album, The Crooner From Outer Space (which also contains, e.g., Lonely Heart Don't Abandon Me, Magnolia I'm Coming Home, and Monty Python's The Galaxy). A real surprising treasure on "Free Hot Lunch! Studio Sessions" is the song, "Oreos." Oreos (about Oreo cookies) is one of the most amazing pop songs ever composed or recorded. Its style appears to be a combination of madrigal and doo-wop. To conclude, I might give 3 stars to Free Hot Lunch's "Eat This," and 5 stars to "Free Hot Lunch! Studio Sessions." Put on either of these two albums, close the eyes, and you'll be in the company of old friends at a tiny table in the Club de Wash, once again.

          4 out of 5 stars Wa-Hah!.......2002-07-28

From the socially conscious "HOME OF THE WHALES" to the socially unacceptable "I Hate to Wake Up Sober in Nebraska," this album (what an archaic term) presents the thoughts and feelings of 3 young men from Madison, Wisconsin played in an outrageously good acoustic jazz style. Free Hot Lunch was a favorite in Madison, Wisconsin for years in the 80's and early 90's. The bands clever though twisted humor, set to hot mandolin, guitar, and fiddle acoustic jazz, and played to full houses of tequila soaked patrons, was a universal hit.
The vocal harmonys are lovely, the instrument work is impressive, the lyrics are a riot, and the Jose Cuervo is RIGHT OVER THERE, SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
Buy this CD, get in your car, set the volume on 'thunderous', and boogie down the road.
