What does a wildly successful purveyor of `80s big hair power ballads do in an ensuing decade dominated by fervent shoe-gazing and other attendant alt.cliches? If you're Jon Bon Jovi, you scale back your band's ambitions, retool yourself as surprisingly accomplished indie film and TV actor, and (mostly) wait for the pop music tides to turn in your favor again. But JBJ and guitarist/collaborator Richie Sambora didn't let their band's lukewarm `90s fortunes dampen their knack for hook-savvy songcraft, as this muscular anthem-fest argues at virtually every turn. BJ's songs here may be as infectious as ever, yet they're seldom mere confections, often infused with alternating doses of bracing cynicism (the title track's sarcastic riposte to the '04 election) and reflective, often bittersweet takes on histories both personal and otherwise. If it sometimes stoops to formula--the droning, metallic ethos of the obligatory big ballad "I Am" can't overcome some equally perfunctory lyrics-it's also an album with its share of warm surprises, be they unexpected nods to Dylan ("Last Man Standing," the acoustic idealism of "Bells of Freedom"), the hard-edged "I Want to Live" or a winning duet with Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles, "Who Says You Can't Go Home." Bon Jovi may deliver a sonically burnished triumph here by largely going back to the future--yet does it with one ear crucially cocked towards the anxious energy of the recent past. -- Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Not bad but really not that good.......2007-07-31

Songs I like are Have a nice day, Bells of Freedom and Complicated. Beyond those three, however this CD really is not that good. There is a lot of pent up aggression with the words but the songs are more of some personal kind of vendetta BJ has against certain social and political issues than a collective set of songs created by a team of people. Sambora, well you just may as well have put him on a bus to go down to California and play for David Lee Roth, or anyone who appreciates his talents because the minimal jamming heard here is really a waste of his precious time. Different approach I can handle, but it could have been so much better.

Hints of a country band realized.....That said Bon Jovi brings you.....Lost Highway. There have always been overtures towards country music from JBJ from Wanted: Dead or Alive, to The Blaze of Glory soundtrack. You knew, however, that they would be followed up with a Bad Medicine or 99 In The Shade. It is becoming apparent, as they age, that they will rock less and croon more..... Sad but true. JBJ's Slippery When Wet voice abandoned him years ago. He's learned to pick his spots, like an aging fastball pitcher. But....he is from Jersey so...I like him....I'll just listen to SWW and NJ more! Keppin the Faith!

3 out of 5 stars Decent Start...but hopefully a better one will come along.......2007-07-10

As far as greatest hits by the band, this I believe is the first one of studio cuts anyway. I saw this one in the Spring in the top Ten at Amazon, and was wondering why all the sudden interest in Bon Jovi, of course they did just come out with a new CD, and the new stuff is pretty good, me myself recently got the Remasters of their first 3 or 4 Cd's, and I admit that "Keep The Faith" was the last one I bought...But I did get the big box set of rarities 100 Million fans can't be wrong, so they are indeed my major rock guilty pleasure.

Is there no "Essential" Bon Jovi yet?, didn't see one...I was hoping for a 2 CD set of their hits along with a few deeper album cuts by now not that I need that, just that it would seem it's time for that since they've been around for 20 plus years now. Hopefully it isn't far off, this band deserves a better career collection than this one, I can't imagine the casual fan wanting this lacking set, even the order is strange. Of course the hardcore Bon Jovi fan likes about every one of their songs, maybe only 4 or 5 from the first album, but even I like most of the songs on 7800 degrees, and an essential would have to have Tokyo Road and Silent Night on it or I would not buy it. As far as Slippery, New Jersey...every song on those should be essential, maybe one or two left off...and that they are not on the greatest hits as this is known, is a major flaw. I'm thinking the ultimate Bon Jovi greatest hits set would have to have at least 4 songs each from the first two CD's, and then maybe 5 or 6 from Slippery, New Jersey, and Keep The Faith? That would fill out 2 Cd's I think and make a nice collection; better than this one for sure.

Hopefully fans new and old will get a better restrospective soon, this one is a nice start I guess, but I would highly recommend checking out their remastered catalog for more hits. They don't have many duds at all at least on their first 4 or 5 Cd's. The late 90's one's I don't know, perhaps an essential collection would contain some newer songs...but classic Bon Jovi is good enough for now.

4 out of 5 stars A great Bon Jovi collection.......2007-06-09

For the most part, this is a great Bon Jovi collection. I do not equally enjoy every song on this album, but this collection includes nearly all of their early hits.

5 out of 5 stars Cross Road.......2007-06-09

I love this CD, it's awesome, the songs are the best. Especially "Always", "Bed of Roses" and "I'll be there for you"

4 out of 5 stars Decent Beginner's Set.......2007-05-22

For people who only know Bon Jovi from their "Have A Nice Day" and beyond years, "Cross Road" is a very good collection of tunes for them to check out. It gives the listener a solid set of their most popular tunes from their hair band heyday before they got all earthy/Mellencampy. This album is by no means a complete gathering of their greatest tunes. It leaves out at least two songs ("Living In Sin" and "Born To Be My Baby") and instead fills those holes with the dismal "Prayer '94," the forgettable "Always" and the harbinger of things to come, "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night." "Someday" is actually a very good modern roots rocker, but people don't buy greatest hits albums for the new songs. People buy this album for songs like the original "Livin' on a Prayer," "Wanted Dead Or Alive," "Bad Medicine," and "I'll Be There For You."

Lesser known tunes from their earliest offerings(particularly "Runaway") signal the beginnings of a great band to come. Later songs such as "Keep The Faith" and "Bed Of Roses" reveal a band in rock decline and quickly headed for the adult contemporary sound. In short, "Crossroad" gives the listener a pretty good take on how a band from Jersey made it big, leveled off, then headed for the sweet and steady success of light rock. Just to shake things up a bit, "Blaze Of Glory" from Jon Bon Jovi's solo "Young Guns II" project is included. Sadly, we do not get a sample from any of Richie Sambora's solo works. He really is a much better guitarist than he's given credit for, and it would have been nice for one of his tunes to be included in this collection.

I grew up during Bon Jovi's prime, and am proud to say that I own original cassette copies of "Slippery When Wet" and "New Jersey." Although they weren't my favorite hair/glam/hard rock band (that was Def Leppard), they were still one of the best around at the time. Bon Jovi is no longer the band they once were, but for people who want to know where they came from, this is the album to pick up.

Amazon.com essential recording

After flirting with heavy guitar rock ("The Man Who Sold the World") and lighter pop ("Hunky Dory"), Bowie found middle ground on Ziggy Stardust. The creation of the Ziggy Stardust persona would live on well after Bowie shed the alien skin, marking the first rock concept album by a sexually ambiguous, artistically bent musician who confounded critics at every turn. A blend of dramatic strings, swaggering saxophones, jagged guitars, and theatrical arrangements, the album's darker rock numbers like "It Ain't Easy," "Moonage Daydream," "Ziggy Stardust," and the irresistible "Suffragette City," still serve as solid excursions into the future (then and now) of rock. The buoyant "Hang on to Yourself" and the dreamy "Star" offer hints of optimism in Ziggy's bleak world. The dramatic "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" and the image-heavy "Star Man" ("he'd like to come and meet us but thinks he'd blow our minds!") no doubt provided plenty of stage-worthy moments when Ziggy toured in the '70s, but years later they still thrill. Bowie blew our minds! --Lorry Fleming

4 out of 5 stars Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am.......2007-07-07

Now I do like this. But it is not my favorite David Bowie album. Too many so-so songs ("Star"; "Hang Onto Yourself"; "Five Years"); too much campy over-orchestration ("Rock and Roll Suicide"), one total bomb ("It Ain't Easy") - he even recycles the "Sweet Jane" riff on "Starman", which is otherwise very good. Still, it's Ziggy Stardust, man! You know? It's not like there aren't all kinds of excellent songs on this album, because there are a truckload! You know "Moonage Daydream", right? What a guitar solo! And you know "Ziggy Stardust", I assume! The lyrics! The riff! And, again, the guitar solo! "Starman" is pretty good too, though I think Bowie could've written his own riff rather than take one of Lou Reed's. Been spending too much time around Jimmy Page, have you? Continuing on, "Suffragette City" may not be terribly insightful, but it's a Stonesy rocker with a powerful horn section, so I like it. Another two songs I like that you don't often hear too much of are the cathartic "Soul Love" and the groupie-themed rocker "Lady Stardust". Oh yeah, and then there's the concept. The bisexual androgynous alien coming down from space to save everybody's life. It's a bit clunky, but like Tommy I find Ziggy Stardust is more about the music than the concept. And the music's good!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Bowie.......2007-06-28

This album is still my favorite dating back to 1972.
Bowie was the genius of the 70's.
All serious Bowie fans should add this cd to their collection, this is Bowie at his best, each song could easily be a number 1 hit even today!

Adrian.T.

5 out of 5 stars Ziggy will captivate you!.......2007-06-25

I love David Bowie and could listen to "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" over-and-over. The poetics of Bowie's lyrics and the phenomenal guitar riffs hold this album together and are what makes it a classic, must have album. This is Bowie at his height of fame and truly captures Bowie's glam rock side of the late 1970s. I could not choose a favorite song from this album because, to me, each song builds off of one another like a good concept album should. From the opening of "Five Years" right to the end "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" shows the various levels of Bowie's artistic ability.
This is a must have for any serious collection of Bowie and for anyone interested in good, wholesome rock showcasing one of the best artists of the 1970s.

4 out of 5 stars Trip down memory lane.......2007-06-10

I was in a restaurant when I heard this album being played and it really brought back memories. I used to listen to it as a teenager and I knew I'd enjoy listening to it again as an adult. It didn't disappoint! Classic Bowie!

5 out of 5 stars "Wam, Bam thank you Mam!!".......2007-04-24

Wow, rock n roll can be raw, catchy, dramatic, and quite sophisticated. So what is the need for new bands? Whenever people talk about Bowie they tend to speak in terms of him paving the way for a lot of today's music. Although that is true I don't think any new rock band has come close to this album. It's too painful for some people to look at the 1970's for what it truly was: the golden age of Rock N Roll, an age that younger people like myself missed out on and only live through their C.D. collection. It is much more comforting to call the 1970's the springboard for modern rock and ignore the fact that modern rock is passionless, corporate, crap.
This album is basically the essence of rock n roll. The songs are short, catchy, and upbeat. These are all qualities that most so called "modern rock" bands avoid like the plague although it is what rock music has always truly been about. Ziggy Stardust is from an era when quality was just plain expected in an album. You couldn't release an album with 10 crapped out songs and 1 decent single like today's bands (by the way music downloading and IPODs are not helping this problem).
If you love great rock music (real rock music) please do yourself a favor and buy Ziggy Stardust and give your Track Skip button a long deserved rest.

David Gilmour's solo career hasn't exactly been creatively restless; this is but the third album by the Pink Floyd guitarist, and first in 18 years. But that seemingly lackadaisical career ethos hasn't prevented Gilmour from producing some of his finest work here, an album whose soaring, lyrical guitar lines will be familiar to Floyd fans, yet one also blessed by often surprising nuances and delicate musical textures. Gilmour's Division Bell collaborator Polly Samson is credited with most of the writing, helping conjure a moody, texturally rich "island" that's as much musical as it is personally and lyrically metaphorical. "Castellorizon," the impressionistic opening instrumental collage, presages much of what's to come in subtle ways, with Gilmour's emotionally-charged guitar lines climbing into realms usually staked out by contemporary Jeff Beck.

Gilmour's choice of collaborators is equally compelling, from the evocative orchestrations of Polish classical modernist Zbigniew Preisner and expected contributions from Floyd (Richard Wright and proto-Pink mate Rado "Bob" Klose) to a host of guest turns that span both decades and styles: Georgie Fame, Phil Manzanera, Jools Holland, Caroline Dale and Robert Wyatt. The title track is graced by the stately harmonies of David Crosby and Graham Nash while the instrumental "Then I Close My Eyes" spins a hypnotic, bayou-meets-boho ethos where Dale's gentle cello lines meet the melancholy cornet flourishes of Wyatt to challenge the very notions of genre itself. "This Heaven" finds Gilmour in unexpected R&B territory, weaving playful riffs with `60s London scenester Fame's Hammond organ and finding its lyrical spirituality in simple, personal intimacy, a subtext that wafts through the upbeat airiness of "The Blue" to the spare "Smile," spinning a surprisingly romantic elegy that co! mes satisfyingly full circle on the closing "Where We Start." No man may be an island, but Gilmour has nonetheless crafted a rewarding artistic oasis on this, his finest and most gently personal album. -- Jerry McCulley

2 out of 5 stars So Disappointed.......2007-07-12

I cannot seem to get into this music. It's boring, not at all like Pink Floyd. I guess it's good for helping one to fall asleep.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-07-05

If you love the beautiful combination of David Gilmour's voice and guitar...this is the disc for you. However if you can find the special edition with the DVD of studio sessions...I highly recommend that one.

5 out of 5 stars On An Island.......2007-06-26

Some excellent mood music by David Gilmour for critical listenting.
This is not background music.
While listening to this one, I find it hard to get up and walk away.
And ... it's one of those cd's that the more you hear it, the more you like it.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised.......2007-06-13

I have been a big fan of Pink Floyd for many years and David Gilmour is my personal guitar hero.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I bought this album, but when I listened to it, I was extremely pleased.

On an Island does not "rock out" like many Floyd songs. This album is more closely related to Floyd's mellow compositions. The song writing is top-notch, Gilmour's guitar playing is masterful (as always) and the vocals and harmonies are perfectly executed.

Gilmour turned 60 when this album was released and I think these songs reflect his maturity (I'm not only speaking of his age, I'm also talking about his maturity as an artist). Instead of the angst and social commentary of Pink Floyd's previous works, Gilmour shows a softer, sweeter side with songs like "Smile".

After my second listen of this CD, I couldn't get many of these songs out of my head.

Those that were expecting Gilmour to release a Pink Floyd-like album may be disappointed. Gilmour has moved beyond that now. Don't get me wrong. I still love Pink Floyd and will treasure all of my Floyd CDs, but David can't evolve as an artist or as a human being without expanding his art beyond what it once was 30 or 40 years ago.

I, for one, respect and appreciate his artistic direction.

5 out of 5 stars My husband loves it!.......2007-06-04

I bought this as a gift for my husband's birthday and he absolutely loves it. He's been a long time fan of this artist, and was not disappointed in the least about how great this CD is. He keeps thanking me for getting it for him!

One Wild Night? Well, that's not strictly true, as this live album was recorded at Bon Jovi concerts spanning three decades. But why be pedantic when the result is a live album that effectively doubles as a greatest-hits collection? Bon Jovi's songs are tailor-made for stadiums and arenas, and, from classic fist-in-the-air rockers ("Livin' on a Prayer," "Bad Medicine," "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Runaway") to lighters-in-the-air numbers ("Keep the Faith," "Wanted Dead or Alive," "Something to Believe In"), the choices are suitably larger than life. The career-reviving single "It's My Life" sounds right at home, as do great covers of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" (recorded, appropriately enough, in Johannesburg in 1995) and the Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays" (performed with Sir Bob Geldof). --Robert Burrow

5 out of 5 stars IT'S ONE WILD NIGHT, ALRIGHT!!!.......2007-02-17

Words cannot describe how awesome BON JOVI is!!! I am their #1 fan and no other group in this world produces such quality / entertaining / heartfelt music. I RECOMMEND YOU BUY ONE WILD NIGHT and ALL OF THEIR CDs!!!

5 out of 5 stars Live Concert Versions of Bon Jovi's Greatest Hits.......2007-01-19

"One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001" by Bon Jovi, Is a compilation of Bon Jovi's best songs, performed at various concert events from 1985 to 2001. For Bon Jovi fans, it's classic Bob Jovi and a Must Have! If you like music recorded from "Live" performances, You will love this album! If you prefer "Studio-Cut" versions, you may not like this album because it has the sound and feel of a live concert.

1 out of 5 stars zero stars.......2005-11-13

One WEAK night!...zero stars if that was available. I never realized Bon Jovi was this bad a live band. They obviously get a LOT of production help in the studio because this album (several different concerts in several different venues) is ALL bad. Sorry for them and sorry for me for buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Bon Jovi rocks.......2005-08-09

I found this CD to be extemely uplifting, great music to listen to while driving.

5 out of 5 stars not a greatest hits album.......2005-05-14

This is not Bon Jovi's greatest hits, and that's the only bad thing that anyone who likes Bon Jovi can say about this. It's a fun collection of some live great live performances. Bon Jovi is great in concert, interacting with the crowd, and building up the energy and fun. You can hear that the audience and performers had a great time. If you like Bon Jovi, then this is certainly worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars A hypnotic, beautiful, flawless musical masterpiece ........2007-07-07

The sounds of Pink Floyd, and both Waters' and Gilmour's solo works have been constants soundtracks throughout my life. This album joins the others in this auspicious place.

Gilmour has crafted a thoroughly beautiful album, both lyrically and musically. This is truly soul-soothing stuff. Its one of those that when you get to the end, only silence or the repeat button are worthy follow-ons.

This is a quiet album, one that calls for an undisturbed afternoon in your favourite lounge. But quiet means neither slow nor boring. This is album is proof why Gilmour is one of the wolds greatest musicians.

The haunting ethereal beauty of the songs and the impeccable virtuous guitar solos will have you stopping whatever you are doing to listen. It is full of subtle and refined details, even witty and quirky, yet never a sound out of place. It is minimalist yet lush. It is warm and organic. It is consistent in its vibe altough the songs are quite different from one another. It will make you feel good, make your eyes water, it will make you shiver and smile.

This album is not Pink Floyd, it is 100% David Gilmour. If you are a DG fan, this is an outstanding continuation/evolution of his solo work. If you are not familiar with his work, then this is the album to get familiar with. This is a fantastic timeless album that defies description. Get it. Get into it. Its a masterpiece.

1 out of 5 stars I would rather hear fingernails on a chalkboard.......2007-05-02

This is horrible.

The bald, fat former guitarist to the great Roger Waters puts out an album of incredibly bad songs written by his pot-head no-talent joke-of-a-wife.

Its like watching a train wreck. Most "musicians" (please notice the quote)couldnt make an album this boring and awful if they tried.

Congratulations David Samson.

Gee, I wonder why nobody bought this album when it came out? So THIS is why with his last two horrible albums he pretended it was Pink Floyd. Nobody (except for a few sad-sacks)would in their right mind buy a David Gilmour album.

Please ignore the 5-star reviews. These were made by the same few knuckleheads that follow this geek around. Homoeroticsm accounts for their review...not the actual terrible songs to be found on this abortion of an album.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album, a must have for any music fan.......2007-02-25

You do not have to be a pink floyd fan to pick this album up. I have had it since the day it was first released, and have continued to enjoy it ever since. David Gilmour teams up with Rick Wright and has an album of well written and quite memorable songs. Smile is a good slower tune, along with the title track, but my favorite is "take a breath". This just has a haunting quality to it. This album at times sounds like newer pink floyd (division bell, momentary lapse), but by no ways is it meant to be a floyd album, and for the most part, is very distinct in it's own right. Sure, two of the members of floyd are playing here, but it was not labled floyd for a reason. David Gilmour's previous two solo records were good (especially the self titled one), but this by far tops his previous work. Pick this up, you will not be dissapointed.

As for the bonus edition with the bonus DVD, it is well worth it. There is almost 50 minutes of live performance here, all shot with great clarity and sound. I purchased as second copy of the album to get it, but I would have paid the price for just the dvd. 8 total tracks, 48:30 run time, great collection of songs. Check this out.

5 out of 5 stars sit back and relax... with HEADPHONES on.......2007-02-10

This is NOT Pink Floyd. David Gilmour doesn't want it to be Pink Floyd. But it is a fantastic album by an amazing artist. It is best appreciated listening undisturbed start to finish with headphones on. David has gone all out in many ways... his web site gave tickets to see him perform on the Jay Leno show (which I was lucky enough to be a part of), he performed the first concert promoting his new album at the Mermaid Theater for lucky fans who won tickets from his web site. Later the Mermaid show appeared on the Big Screen. This cd has been re-released with a DVD of a performance for AOL, a song from his upcoming DVD Remember That Night, as well as a track from a performance he gave at Abbey Road studios for an upcoming tv event (I bought the DVD from his web site as a limited edition stand alone DVD and it is alone worth the price of the CD, but you get both!). His web site has gone all out with a blog and constant updates. Oh yeah- this is a review of the album... the title track is excellent with classic Gilmour guitar solos. The Blue features a guitar solo that gives a whole new meaning to the idea of "bending notes". Take a Breath has an incredible guitar solo at the end (and fares even better in the two(!) live versions on the DVD- and before you ask, yes both versions are worthy of being on the same DVD). I would say the only weak track is Smile, which I didn't care for much on his Meltdown DVD either. Aside from that, this is a really great album! And the more I listen to it the more it seems to just fit like a comfortable old shoe. Terrible imagery, but you know what I'm trying to say- right?

The precursor to Bowie's masterpiece, The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, Hunky Dory points in many of the same musical directions as Ziggy, with Bowie camping it up outrageously through a mixture of cabaret piano, coquettish lyrics and soaring vocals. After the hard rock "The Man Who Sold The World", Mick Ronson's guitar is turned down in favour of plenty of piano and acoustic guitar, as Bowie proves his mettle as a masterful singer-songwriter. Not a dull note is struck on the whole album, which flits from opener "Changes" to the vampy "Oh! You Pretty Thing" to the heart-wrenching "Life On Mars" with a seemingly impeccable ear for a tune. Flirty, sexy and irresistibly seductive. --Amber Cowan

4 out of 5 stars Once Upon A Time..........2007-06-29

...there were LP's, and LP's had a Side 1 and a Side 2, and sometimes the division meant something artistically. (I am aware that tape cassettes have 2 sides also, but sometimes the song lineup is altered, thereby compromising the artistic continuity.) Anyway, the 2 sides of "Hunky Dory" are easy to distinguish. The first 6 tracks comprised Side 1. They are more mainstream in form and more musically bright in execution, even though the subject matter of some of them is quite serious. What I am saying is, they are "pretty" in a pleasant, appealing way. "Changes" is, of course, one of Bowie's most well-known and well-loved songs. "Oh You Pretty Things" has great piano and an irresistable chorus, and "Kooks" is almost unbearably sweet (that's a compliment), especially the line "...and if the homework brings you down, then we'll throw it on the fire and take the car downtown." What a dad! "Life On Mars" and "Quicksand" are symphonic, lyrical masterpieces, works of pop genius by any standards. "Mars" makes you laugh and cry at the same time, but there's not much to laugh about in "Quicksand".

Then there's Side 2. Track 7 I dislike. I don't even want to discuss it. "Andy Warhol" has some good guitar action, and the lyrics are a fun and clever tribute to Andy. "Song For Bob Dylan" is a plea for the artist to return to his early protest roots. I theorized this, but I had to confirm it on Wikipedia. "Queen Bitch" sounds like Lou Reed music, which is a good thing. The final cut, "The Bewlay Brothers", is a strange, somber song with lyrics that make no sense to me - again, Wikipedia backs me up.

Rating this album, I give "Side 1" 5 stars, and "Side 2" 3 stars, so the combined score is a 4. If all tracks were as good as the first 6, it would be an unquestioned 5-star work. Bowie learned a lot before he moved on to "Ziggy".

4 out of 5 stars Immersed in Crowley's uniform..........2007-03-05

I have to say that I am not as big a fan of this album as I am of the records that bookend it. That being said, I can appreciate the praise heaped on 'Hunky Dory', probably the most celebrated of Bowie's albums. Released in the late fall of 1971, a great year for classic rock, David's fourth record was a rather humble success at first. This record is sonically a vast detour from 'Man Who Sold the World' as hard rock barely makes an appearance (notable exception being pre-Ziggy era taster "Queen Bitch" - a tribute to Bowie idol Lou Reed). However lyrically the album revists many of the same themes as its predecessor (distrust of religion, insanity and a future race of "Homo Superior"). "Changes" is the classic every rock fan knows and it was surprisingly not a hit when it originally appeared. David seems to be outdistancing his contemporaries ("look out you rock n' rollers.") and was seen as arrogant by many critics (who is this onehit wonder to believe he is above what the Beatles had done??, They seemed to be saying). "Life on Mars?" is an admitted tribute to Frank Sinatra's "My Way" but would also prove to be one of his most lasting compostions. "Kooks" is his witty celebration of being a new father (and along with "Fill Your Heart" reminicent of songs from his first lp in 1967.) Much of the second half of the record is taken up by a series of tributes to Bowies favorites - "Andy Warhol", "Song for Dylan" (with a Dylanesque vocal!) and the aforementioned "Queen Bitch". My personal favorite is the epic like "Quicksand", as powerful as an entirely acoustically driven song can be ("ain't got the power anymore"). This has been called Bowie's singer-songwriter's record and is probably true, though he was not opening copying a certain artist's style. Commercial acceptance would come with the next lp - and then the phenomenon would begin.

5 out of 5 stars Everything I like about David in forty-five minutes.......2007-02-23

I haven't heard much Bowie at all, but it must be said that I like all I've heard so far. And this is my favorite of the three albums of his I've heard (the others are Station to Station and Ziggy Stardust). This is the most Beatlesque of the Bowie releases I've heard - with orchestration, piano-based rockers and an expert sense of melody. But before one accuses Bowie of copying the Beatles' formula, he brings a few things of his own to the table: intentionally campy vocals, heavy guitars, bizarre sci-fi lyrics, and a general sense of druggy madness. As a result, songs like Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Life on Mars? and Quicksand feel comfortable as an old shoe, but at the same point unlike anything you'll ever here. And when he rocks out (Song to Bob Dylan, the mysoginistic but irresistable Queen Bitch), it's irresistable. The whole album works like a charm. About a dozen excellent records came out in 1971, and this is easily one of them. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest (if not the greatest) Bowie album of all time.......2007-02-16

"Hunky Dory" is by far one of Bowie's greatest albums. The entire album is tight and the songs are lyrically some of his best. This is definitely one album that fans of Bowies from all ages and walks of life would enjoy. From the opening notes on his hit song 'Changes' to the methodic acoustic 'The Bewlay Brothers' this album is a must have in any collection that purports to be a "great" musical collection

5 out of 5 stars A sentimental young Bowie.......2007-01-12

This album spawned a few well loved classics - Changes, Life on Mars - but also contains some of the best early Bowie has to offer including a tribute to Andy Warhol, and a song dedicated to Bowie's then little boy (Kooks). It has a funky, folksy sound completed by quirky, poetic lyrics that are signature Bowie. Hunky Dory feels a lot more sentimental than most of his work ... a young man, misunderstood, writing songs about those who influenced him and those who tried to keep him down. A great addition to any collection - or just a place to explore a different David Bowie sound than most are used to.

4 out of 5 stars mastering issues?.......2007-07-05

young americans as an album is great - my reason for this review is to find out if i'm just hearing things or if there are a couple mistakes on the standard cd of this album (not the 5.1 mix)

at 3:45 in the song young americans, the background singers seem to drop completely out of the mix for a full second in the right speaker. also, maybe 5 to 10 seconds or so before this, there is a click that kind of sounds like skip in the cd but its not - these aren't huge things but for an audiophile, they're distracting at the least, esp. with headphones - can anyone else verify that this is on all of the copies of the special edition album? its not just mine, right?

5 out of 5 stars It's not THAT bad.......2007-06-27

I honestly think the Dolby mix listening experience depends on the type of fidelity system one has. I do agree with the previous poster that certain instruments really are much too loud on several of the songs, but I found the backup singers coming out of the rear channels to be really something else. The songs featuring string arrangements are especially compelling with Bowies' vocals centered, background singers in the rear and the orchestration lushly swirling around seemingly from everywhere. I don't know if Dolby DTS makes this sound better, but that's the scheme that I use to listen to just about everything, including this (I just prefer DTS over 5.1). Aside from the occasionally loud bass drum or percussion instrument, I just haven't found any deal breaking faults like the prior reviewer has. No disrespect to his opinions, but I guess people just hear things differently.

The five star rating is for the total package of this latest re-issue. The CD version of the mixes is outstanding, the Dolby disc while not drop dead essential, is nice enough to have. The Dick Cavett interview and the musical performances are both really very interesting archival things. Yeah they've been floating around forever as bootlegs, but now's your chance to get it legitimately. The liner notes are also excellent, tracing the path of the album itself and the Bowie timeline of events that surrounded this recording (like found on the Ziggy, Aladin and Diamond Dogs reissues).

So in short, no don't buy this if you're happy with whatever version of YA you have. But if you do have the cash to burn then by all means indulge yourself.

Young Americans was and still is, a great great album.

4 out of 5 stars 5.1 channels of gross.......2007-06-10

I love this album. The original stereo mix is great. Great songs, great performances, great sound. I'm not even going to get into that. My review is for those of you strictly curious about the 5.1 mix.

The 5.1 mix, in short, is awful. If you've ever thought to yourself, "Boy, I wish that bongo drum was loud as hell" or "Why can't those backup singers sound like they're singing in a garage down the road?" then maybe you'll like this. The strut and soul of these songs is lost in the obnoxious frills of this surround mix. There are constant issues with the reverb on both lead and backup vocals. I'm sure the original tracks are hard to deal with, but the effects that make this album sound like a classic piece of coked-out 70's soul only sound awkward when shifting around in the stereo field at any instant. The only track that I find even interesting to hear in 5.1 is "Win". The worst tragedy of this remix is "Fame". It sounds so dry and brittle that I can't even handle it. This isn't "Fame". This is something else... Then again "Fascination" sucks pretty bad too. Man, what a waste of money.

The Dick Cavette show stuff is great though. Bowie just can't quit fidgeting with that cane.

3 out of 5 stars Where's the glam? Review of the SACD remaster, not of the album.......2007-07-11

I assume you know this album, so I am reviewing the SACD remaster for you. The sound is lovely, but the mix leaves me wanting more.

The SACD has a clean fresh sound. There is nice seperation between instruments. I previously hadn't heard the viola sound rising up in "Hang on to Yourself" The Sacd highlites the acoustic guitar(s). Particularly the surround mix. It is pretty, but makes it sound like a Bowie album, not a Spider's album. I was hoping for some raw Mick Ronson electric beauty, but he seems so tame in the SACD. The theatric strings on pieces like "Starman" too seem so minimal. They don't pick you up and carry you away as they were intended.

The glam is just not present. It sounds more like the "wandering poet with a guitar approach" The stereo layer is better, but the SACD just doesn't capture the creativity of the album, or the dolled up excitement of the scene.

If you like the early acoustic Bowie, you will love this. If you like those naughty Spiders, forget it.

5 out of 5 stars Quick shipping.......2007-06-14

A great album on a great cd, shipped to me so fast I didn't know what it could be when I opened it...surely not the CD I just ordered!?!?

5 out of 5 stars Hang On To Yourself!.......2007-05-25

From the slow, steady beat of "Five Years" to the lavish, lamentable closing, "Rock & Roll Suicide"; "Ziggy Stardust" has held its own in Rock history. Add the element of SACD (surround sound) and the album takes on a new life. From the acoustical clapping of "Soul Love" to the hard driving guitars of "Suffragette City", this new mix finally and clearly separates all the instruments without isolating them. It is a full band experience as if you were in the studio. The acoustic guitars sound so crisp and clean and Mick Ronson's guitar work sounds like new. Although the album has always suggested "To Be Played At Maximum Volume", the bass and drums are not as highly mixed as the rest. That's a shame, as the beat here is legendary. But, I still can't over-emphasize how great this version sounds, especially after marveling over "Dark Side Of The Moon" and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". Hang on to yourself!

5 out of 5 stars great cd highly recommended........2007-02-13

one of the best rock 'n' roll cd of the history.
i think that the few more dollars are worth the hybrid sacd and when you find a compact disc that can play it it's very pleasing.

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic.......2007-01-24

This well produced, quality CD will not disappoint you or tarnish your memories of this timeless classic. Each song deftly draws you in, better than when you first heard it (and probably had no idea of just how really good it all was). This CD brings it all back and more - if there is but one ember of your youth left inside - you know you have to have this CD.

After the success of the dance hits "Fame" and "Young Americans" (both off 1975's Young Americans), Bowie seemed to step back, ponder the future of rock, and then turn up the guitars and the art-rock sensibilities and make a completely engaging and evocative album. From the epic title track (introducing the Thin White Duke character and building into an incendiary rocker) to the irresistible "Golden Years" (another dance hit) and on to the physically wrenching and funk-drenched "Stay," the soul of David Bowie is pretty much meshed into every track. The playful "TVC15" takes the listener on a bumpy ride into unholy tech-love, and the gorgeous "Wild is the Wind" and "Word on a Wing" have Bowie stepping out of his rocker persona and into sensual crooner mode. Strong from beginning to end. --Lorry Fleming

5 out of 5 stars My Favourite Bowie Album.......2007-06-12

Hmm, Only six songs on a Bowie album. Is this a rip-off? That was my first reaction when it was released. Also when i heard the album for the first time it seemed my fears were justified. I could not understand the title song and felt it was a ten minute disjointed waste of time. I was also very shocked at the photos provided for the album. David Bowie was always thin but these photos showed him very anaemic and deathly thin. I realize he was at the height of drug addiction during this time and sometimes artists in this state can produce their best work.

For a die hard Bowie fan in the Seventies, there were too many abrupt changes in direction from Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust..., Aladdin Sane, Pin-Ups, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans and now Station to Station. It would continue with Low, "Heroes", Lodger, Scary Monsters and Let's Dance. Looking back it was an amazing run of success, with each album being very different fron its predecessor. He was very definitely ahead of his time! He was superbly aided by long time associate Carlos Alomar on Guitar, along with Earl Slick. Also included was Roy Bittan on Piano (of E Street Band fame), Dennis Davis on Drums and George Murray on Bass.

After listening to all of Bowie's albums from the Seventies, this is the one album I cherish the most. I do not know why that is as all his other albums are very rewarding and some are true classics (Ziggy, Aladdin, Low). But i think that this is his most personal album, not the musings of some alter-ego but it is David Bowie speaking from the heart. It may be another persona in the form of "The Thin White Duke" but it seems more stripped down with no glam, no funk and no throwbacks to an earlier time. It was a very modern album for 1976, and was blessed with a release date just before punk and disco ruled the radio.

1. STATION TO STATION (10.08) Certainly in the 1970s this was Bowie's longest song. Basically it comprises four differnet sections; TRAIN RIDE, INSTRUMENTAL INTRO, RETURN OF THE THIN WHITE DUKE and IT'S TOO LATE. I could not understand it all at first but now i just sit back and enjoy the wonderful ten minute opus in all its glory. One of my favourite Bowie songs of all time (and this album includes four!).

2. GOLDEN YEARS (4.03) One of DB's most popular songs and deservedly so. Very catchy and done in a great doo-wap style. Sounds nothing like Jean Genie or Diamond Dogs and it shows another side of Bowie's gift for songwriting. Another favourite.

3. WORD ON A WING (6.00) Getting into a more sentimental, religious mood. It is a nice change of pace and shows he can be vulnerable and very willing to show that he is not too strong. Not many superstars did this in those days.

4. TVC15 (5.29) The one song on the album that could be a throwback to earlier times and I do not mean that in a negative sense. This is a great Bowie song, hard to make out what he is saying but it is just good old guitar/piano rock song with a very catchy chorus. Love it!

5. STAY (6.08) The opening guitar riff draws you in immediately. Oblique lyrics but there is a sense of broodng uncertainty throughout the whole song and again it shows the singer's sensitive side.

6. WILD IS THE WIND (5.58) A cover version of a song written in 1956 by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington. I have not heard the original or any other version of this song but this is arguably the most satisfying song on the whole album. It is hard for me to say why as sometimes I listen to this song and feel Bowie's vocals are a little wobbly. Other times i listen to it and I feel he nails it completely. It is a beautiful song and the lyrics are sublime. I can understand why Bowie wanted to sing it as his vocal is so emotional. You get the sense that he is so completely in love and laying himself bare that it can make you teary-eyed. From an artist who was a glam rock superstar, it is a very sobering song coming straight from the heart. Sorry for the hyperbole but I have to admit personally it is the standout track on the album.

The folowing two tracks are bonuses on the cd and not indcluded on the original LP. They are live versions of WORD ON A WING (6.10) and STAY (8.24). They are interesting but not essential. The time listed on the album for the Live verion of STAY is incorrect at 7.24

4 out of 5 stars Oldie But (Remastered) Goodie.......2007-04-13

Yet another Bowie album that sounded like nothing else being made at the time. Remarkable in that it only consists of 6 tracks, but most folks have probably forgotten how good those tracks were. Showcases Bowie's fabulous voice and operatic sense of timing.

5 out of 5 stars as wonderful as the wind.......2007-04-09

a fantastic and profound album that comes to new light with this version. It is truly a timeless work that shines in any form. Captures Bowie in his occultish-musing incarnation and of course adding brilliance to the classic "wind."

5 out of 5 stars Great effects!.......2007-01-26

The sound of the train coming through your speakers is amazing. Vocals are vintage Bowie as we know and love him. Make no mistake "Golden Years'" is just the tip of the iceberg on this great cd.
