The debut of thundering supergroup Audioslave--featuring members of Rage Against the Machine post-Zack de la Rocha with ex-Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell--is as much curio as fascinating blend of visions. Cornell might be outnumbered, but his unmistakable holler and nihilistic imagery ensure that Audioslave, the album, recalls early Soundgarden. That's especially true since de la Rocha took Rage's signature rap and politicking with him. Still, if this is Soundgarden, it's Soundgarden set to stun. Rage guitarist Tom Morello is more of a mauler than Kim Thayil ever was--witness "Shadow on the Sun," which moves from bruising thud to psychedelic freak-out and back again--while the Rage rhythm section of Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk anchor the bottom end with pure instrumental cement. Intentionally or not, "Gasoline" bears passing resemblance to "Rusty Cage," while the sweeping "I Am the Highway" and slow-burning "The Last Remaining Light" best showcase Cornell's surprisingly New Age-y lyrical bent. Cover art by Storm Thorgerson, who gave Pink Floyd records their distinctive stamp, underscores the set's inherent celebrity. Fans of Rage and Soundgarden can raise clenched fists in unison, for Audioslave is win-win. --Kim Hughes

The novelty of Audioslave has had time to wear off. The grouping of ex-Rage Against the Machine members and ex-Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell is no longer new; and time has long since come for the band to live or die based solely on the merits of its music, not on the reputation of its members. The good news is that, at least for now, the group is in a position to do exactly that. On Revelations, the band channels and updates the unapologetic boogie of Ian Gillan-era Deep Purple on tunes such as "One and the Same," "Shape of Things to Come," and "Wide Awake" with ease, inspiring awe and genuine surprise. Guitarist Tom Morello has rarely sounded as fresh as he does on the stomp-and-stammer "Original Fire" and the otherwise disposable grunge retread "Somedays." Not every track here can be as good as the opening title cut and a few--the should-be moving ballad "Until We Fall," the closing "Moth"--fall painfully short. But there is enough strength here to suggest that Audioslave's ability to deliver jaw-dropping albums remains intact and its ability to live up to the hype is lagging just a step or two behind. --Jedd Beaudoin

5 out of 5 stars Pardon my gushing but this album is REALLY GOOD!!.......2007-07-06

I am a fan of Chris Cornell's. I have all of Soundgarden's albums and am going to buy his solo albums too. Like Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell is a brilliant singer and songwriter and his teaming up with the former members of Rage Against the Machine was an excellent move since all three of the albums put out by Audioslave are top-notch rock and roll.

Cornell's voice is clear and polished and the precussion members (especially Tom Morello) do very well together and I was sorely disappointed to find out about Audioslave's demise. Cornell's music is a work of art and all of Audioslave's CDs would do his former band, Soundgarden, proud.

Hopefully Audioslave will do a reunion tour. Meantime, this and Audioslave's other 2 CDs belong in everyone's CD collection.

3 out of 5 stars Losing the edge.......2007-07-05

Got to admit that I was a major fan of this group after the first AudioSlave cd. Then Out of Exile which had just a little bit less energy. And Revelations, well, just as well they break up I suppose. Chris Cornell's name is up on the marquee over at Denver's Filmore. I just wonder if these guys knew what a good thing they had going? I salute AudioSlave for what they once were!

Back again', Audioslave bring to us a very nice piece that include cool rock sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Revelations, what a song!.......2007-06-06

Audioslave; Revelations, the supergroups third effort, has a more rhythmic and rough feel than their previous two albums, making it sound like it came out of a garage in the early 90's. From the biting second song to the closing arena singalong, the album visit's the bands journey through the mainstream, settling in a comfortable mix between Chris Cornell's melodic vocals, and the aggressive inventiveness that the former Rage Against the Machine members bring.
Chris Cornell was the long time lead singer for the hugely popular grunge band Soundgarden. After six albums and a decade of melancholy lyrics, he emerged into the next millennium with a solo album, Euphoria Morning, that reflected a more romantic and introspective message. After disappointing support, fans were thrilled that he was back to his hard rocking roots when he joined up with the recently disbanded and equally popular band Rage Against the Machine consisting of Tom Morello (guitarist), Tim Commerford (bass and backup vocals), and Brad Wilk (drums). The outcome was dynamite. As guitarist Tom Morello explored melodies, he put his personal mark on a unique heavy grooving style that seemed to speak to Cornell. Audioslave released three albums one right after the other. Incredibly all three were full of new and inspired music, different from the last and more matured as they went. It seemed that Chris Cornell, front man of over 20 years, was hitting his lyrical stride.
The first song and the album's namesake, Revelations is fast, upbeat, and Audioslave's trophy song gets the blood going. The kind of song you can listen to over and over again for hours, finding something new in it to enjoy every time. The rest of the songs ably backs it up with driving riffs, powerful epic choruses textured with subtle and soft verses, creating thrilling ebb and flow through the songs. They seamlessly incorporate groundbreaking solos with Cornell's sage vocal mastery, and they do it with incredibly inventive transitions creating awesome flow while reaching the extreme ups and downs, like a wall of voice and guitar hitting you between the ears as the chorus unfolds. The lyrics also have real life applications, for example equating a sinful life to a stray and beleaguered dog, who is found, and gets food and shelter in the end. Just as in the past two albums, he continues to write of spiritual struggles and questions, but the thankfulness and gratitude that comes through in his words show that some of his questions are getting answers.
The tracks consist of driving beats and hammering riffs, but while the verses can be delicate and polarizing, there is still room left for soft and sweet ballads that Chris Cornell gets his voice around so soundly. Audioslave also explores relatively new territory in Revelations with a small sidebar of political opinion. For Rage Against the Machine fans, political dialogue went hand in hand with their music, but Audioslave has seemed more discreet about mixing it into the music before now, allowing their websites and causes to funnel their political ideas.
Audioslave fans should be very pleased with another great album from the seasoned rockers. Revelations is an album on the same level as it's predecessors, setting higher expectations and redefining what a supergroup can do. With Robert Plant like vocals and groove metal sounds, Audioslave combines them in an album that both classic rock fans and head banging enthusiasts can enjoy. This album also reflects the musical truth that Soundgarden fans and Rage Against the Machine fans continue to learn, that rocking gets better with experience.

5 out of 5 stars Remember Your Roots--Listen to this album!.......2007-05-22

Who says rock n roll is dead? This album brings it all back to where it should be. No screeching, carbon-copy, angst-ridden, eye-liner-wearing, sobbing for the chance to meet Marilyn Manson kid stuff here. Just good, clean, dirty rock, played with an ear for what's true and right. Rock on!!!

WITH A SCORE OF 4-1/2 STARS I SEE I'M NOT ALONE IN RATING THIS ALBUM A FULL 5 STARS! I'M GETTING BACK TO MY HARD ROCK ROOTS AND AUDIOSLAVE IS A GOOOOOOD FIT.

5 out of 5 stars Super listening.......2007-06-27

A mix of the bands Soundgarden and Rage Against The Machine WORKS for this group. Chris Cornell's career on his own wasn't so hot, but these guys are UNBEATABLE together.

I Am The Highway is a favorite, but Show Me How To Live is destined to be (already is on local rock radio) a classic!

This album received much hype - and deservedly so. There IS no weak track on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars SOUL POWER!!!!.......2007-06-12

It's amazing how two smilar bands breaking up can make such a monumental callaboration of artists. R.A.T.M. and Soundgarden had both broken up year before this release, Chris Cornell's unsucessful solo project and deprature from his grunge roots didn't earn him any cred with manstream rock artists. Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk were basiclly atalis after the split of "Rage" and it seems like it was fate for these people to collied in there musical endevores. But it still blows my mind that the guys from "Rage" joined forces with Chris Cornell? Sound pretty crazy if you put youself in the 90's When both bands were together and striving in ther sucess. But this album lived up to every little bit of hype it received.

1. Cochise- Classic heavy rocker with one of the most legendary riffs in the past decade. Sounds simillar to a song of the heavy metal band "Pantera" but this song surpases any tryuphs of "Pantera"'s song. Little known fact; Cochise is the name of an Indian cheif.Cool helicopter sound at the begining to. 5/5

2. Show Me How To Live- Another great riff by Tom on this on, and Chris's soul shattering vocals don't hurt either. 5/5

3. Gasoline- Rock on!! I was surprised at how heavy this album was a hard rocker, the riff might not be as good some earlier tracks, but it still keeps it going. 5/5

4. What You Are- Grunge, Grunge, Grunge is what this song is. My second favorite song on here. Personal lyrics and a heavy destortion riff make this a classic. Tom also dose an excellent job on this, providing a cool melodic solo that fits the song well. 5/5

5. Like A Stone- Finally the big hit singal, the first Audioslave song I ever heard, and one of the best. Chris's vocal could peal the paint of walls on this one. 5/5

6. Set it off- Set this f#@%er off!!!! This one of the best songs i've heard in years. Tom plays the riff backwards in the begining, more heavy lyrics and a pounding bass line. 5/5

7. Shadow Of The Sun- Not my fav but it's good. more of a ballad thing goin' on. it gets better near the end. 4.5/5

8. I Am The Highway- My favorite song on the album, and definately the best lyrics. Chris comperes two things that can only work if there together, a he's getting the raw end of the deal. Tom's accustic solo is a nice change of pace. 5/5

9. Exploder- Cool song nice to speed things up after "I Am The Highway". Very cold and dark lyrics on this one. 4/5

10. Hypnotized- Little more techno sound. I can't put my finger on it but the bass riff seems oddly familiar. 4.5/5

11. Bring Em Back Alive- Heaviest song on the album, bottom line. With a soul draining solo provided by Soul Power. Awsome!! 5/5

12. Light My Way- It seems like this riff gets a bit repeitive after a while. 4/5

13. Getaway Car- This song is a little repeitive to but the talking accustic guitar is what makes this interesting. 4/5

14. The Last Remaining Light- Not the best way to end the album, it sounds almost exactily like "Like A Stone" and really goes no where. 3.5/5

If this had of stopped at track 11 it would be perfect. all and all great album- Chuck

5 out of 5 stars no better.......2007-04-02

no better in the industry right now, unless they steal chris cornell. absolutely great cd - waiting for the next album...

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing..........2007-01-29

In my opinion, Audioslave's self-titled debut ranks among the all time great debut albums along with GNR's Appetite for Destruction and STP's Core. While Out of Exile and Revelations are quite riveting and great fun, they cannot touch this. There is not a weak track to be found. Sure, some are better than others, but the best ones (Like A Stone, What You Are, Shadow on the Sun, I Am the Highway) are destined to be all-time classics. Listening to this cd begs the question: what the hell happened to good old rock? what is with all this new girly rock? yeah, you know what i'm talkin about- nickelback, hinder, etc. there are good ones left like breaking benjamin, shinedown, godsmack, and disturbed, though.

In what was widely predicted to be a short-lived supergroup/side-project, Audioslave has instead gratifyingly yielded a bonafide band. The follow-up to their promising, if not quite artistically congealed '02 debut finds singer/songwriter Chris Cornell contributing a slate of songs that would have done his former Soundgarden proud, while guitarist Tom Morello and his former Rage Against the Machine bandmates cast them in a focused rhythmic groove that suggests that the old school can still yield a timely lesson or two. Cornell's best songs may still lurk in the shadows (the funeral hypno-blues of "Heaven's Dead," the martial metal of antiwar opener "Your Time Has Come," "The Worm" as anthem for self-loathing), yet they're now brightened with such surprisingly sunny fare as "Dandelion," "Doesn't Remind Me"'s charged, existentialist daydream and even a hook-rich, dangerously optimistic back-to-the-future power ballad in "Be Yourself." Morello's work on the title track and elsewhere is a study in taste and less-is-more efficiency, a telling hint of how forcefully these iconic '90s stars have sublimated their egos as their new music has blossomed; who said there are no second acts in American (rock) lives? --Jerry McCulley

Seems most either love it or hate it, its pretty good the first 4 songs really hold me then it drops slightly after that but its not bad. Definately check out the first album if you haven't already, i don't know i just feel there's more energy coming from that one. My rating of 3.5 stars means its on the higher end of and average album.

1 out of 5 stars Cornell, Wilkes, Comerford & Morello are, at best, an ill-fitting group of clashing musicians, commie Cuba-supporters at worst!!.......2007-02-08

Audioslave's sophomore-slump CD--with an accordingly self-righteous and "epic"-looking shot of waves on the horizon--antagonizes the listener to revile the group for two, major reasons: their music and also their political ideology!!!! The team-up of a grunge-singer and accomplished guitarist like Cornell with these three urban hoodlum-types from Rage Against The Machine, a band whose musical inferiority was surpassed only by its hazardous, socialist-justice proselytization, was an ill-fitting mismatch from the getgo. Add to that already inexcusable, woeful combination the taint that these four are a bunch of liberals and socialists who detest America and the system of capitalism while longing to be Marxists and commies, and you have a completely rotten band you cannot tolerate.

Audioslave was never, ever a harmonious combination of musicians because of their irreversibly different, musical backgrounds. As far as musicianship goes, Cornell is the most consummate of the four with his credentials being quite unquestionable as Soundgarden frontman (great, primal screaming/singing; guitar playing). Even his solo album was not too shabby. Now, juxtapose that with the three rejects from Rage Against the Machine, who are remorselessly talentless hacks with no finesse in their instruments' playing, and you have a total inequality. Morello's imitative skill as a shortcoming guitar playing is typified by his dreadful playing; he's unapt at playing a guitar competently. All he does is produce aggravating and chaotic, funk noises on the guitar that sound more like someone messing with their guitar. The drummer has a subtle bit of promise to him, as he drums quite hard, but his metronome timing is uninspired and he's nowhere near the best drummer alive today, Tool's Carey. The bass player is also--like the miscreant Morello--preoccupied with producing funk-like beats on his bass, and it sounds like excrement!!!!

Take the most notorious song off of Out of Exile, Doesn't Remind Me: it's too unseemly, bouncy and uninspired. Cornell sings the verses monotonously with no ambition, and the chorus is just your basic, "balls-out" rocker. Also worrying is the subliminal message of nihilism in the song which seems to advocate an ideology of having no real principles, beliefs or positions. The line "what's mine is ours" is also scary because it reeks of socialist ideology.

The title-track's lyrics may be poetic and "beautiful" in a sort of clandestine approach, but, again, when examining the lyrics, it's flagrant what Audioslave's indoctrination-message is. The references to "her labor" and "harvest" are barely loosely disguised insinuations to Mother Earth, feminism and environmentalism. In short, all dislikeable and unpopular liberal diseases. As the listener, you always have to be 100% wary of Audioslave's socialist, secular-progressive miscreants plotting to indoctrinate their audience...which shouldn't be too hard for them to do, considering the kind of sheeple who make up their fanbase.

Continuing their pessimistic and hopeless theme of mortality on this CD--which, again, is consistent with their socialist sickness where they refuse to recognize God in order to feel a higher purpose--Heaven's Dead is a plodding exercise in depression and self-pity!!!! Grudgingly, I'll willingly concede that the tune and the way Audioslave plays on this song are uncharacteristically memorable; Cornell sings passionately, and there's this repeated chord which has that sweet feel to it. Yet, this is no excuse for the song's theme which is utterly nihilistic and full of mortality, a mindset that can only be brought about by questions of existentialism which arise from not having a higher power (God) to believe in. As such, Audioslave has again, with an increasing failure of originality, disseminated socialist and progressive misbeliefs!!!!

How American "fans" (read: misguided sheeple who've come to like the concept of Audioslave more than the actual product of their music) can still financially support this band of un-Americanism is beyond this morally clear reviewer, as Audioslave's hugest trespass was playing a concert in 2005 in the dictatorial, communistic cesspool known as Fidel Castro's Cuba. Audioslave was even disdainfully proud to have mingled with the enemy--the Cuban regime--but upon returning to the US, pejoratively compared the US to socialist, third-world Cuba!!!! In interviews from last year, Tom Morello relentlessly accused US policemen at their American concerts for "beating up" concert-goers while the "good, old" commies in Cuba--according to the falsifying Morello--fostered only an atmosphere of unity and love. This propaganda from Morello's mouth culpably sounds like nothing but pro-socialist, pro-Democrat Party talking points.

My review has absolutely contained more than enough demerits to Audioslave's reputation to make undecided listeners boycott and shun the band of questionable talent and loyalty. Unluckily, the diehard "fans"--again, it's hard to believe sheeple can be so misguided to get excited about a band which has no good guitar players and only produces monotonous-sounding songs--will obstinately continue patronizing this anti-American group. Just remember that Audioslave only has Cornell as its saving grace; sounds more like RATM garbage than rock; and supports US enemies like Cuba!!!!

4 out of 5 stars liked it..........2007-01-24

Not as good as their first album, but better than the 2006 album.

2 out of 5 stars Audioslave shouldn't be boring.......2007-01-09

First off I must state I was never a huge fan of Rage or Soundgarden. However....I loved the first Audioslave CD. It was one of the best albums I had heard in years. But there is something wrong with this CD. I can't claim it to "growing", diving into the mainstream, or experimenting. It's just boring. I like some of the slower songs like "Doesn't Remind Me" and "Dandelion" but it's the heavy tracks that bore me. The songs start off hard, but then they trickle down into what amounts to Cornell wooing on and on until all the songs end up blending together. All of the tracks on here sound like B-sides from the debut album. Who knows...maybe they are.

It is astounding to me that they would release "Be Yourself" as the first single. I could understand if they were some band in fuzzy shirts created by the Disney Channel and the song was featured on an episode of Lizzy McGuire....but from the singer of "Black Hole Sun" and the band that rocked out in "Bulls on Parade"??? Why go that cliche'?

It's still Audioslave, but a boring version. If you're not already a fan skip this album and buy the third album, then go back to their debut...and if you still can't get enough....borrow this one, and then hope for the best when their fourth comes out.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-12-07

Wow, what a killer rock album. I was never all that into Soundgarden or Rage Against The Machine, I have always liked what I have heard from Audioslave, but this is the first album that I have picked up. This is top notch stuff all the way through. The songwriting is strong throughout. The vocals are pristine. The guitar playing is constantly creative and at times very innovative. The rhythm section is solid as a rock and there are some killer bass and drums parts to be found throughout. The album spawned two hit singles "Be Yourself" and "Doesn't Remind Me" both of which are great tunes. The opener "Your Time Has Come" is a great high energy to start the album with. More great rock is to be found with "Man Or Animal" and the title track. The band does a great job with ballads to with "Heaven's Dead" being a highlight. The band even does a blues number with "#1 Zero". Cornell sings in a blues style that fans of his work are probably not used to, but the guy just wails on this tune. If he ever wanted to move into a more bluesy direction I think he could be very successful at it. This album to me has more in common with old Soundgarden than it does Rage. There is no hop hop or rap to be found here, but just straight ahead rock played with intensity and power. This is a great album!

4 out of 5 stars Different Perspective.......2006-07-13

Vitamin records has been releasing these cd's like wild fires, just spreading orchestral music to the lesser audience of it. This cd will give you the rock music that originally started this who phenomenon (apocalyptica).

This cd is great for anyone interested in hearing the depth of a music genre. Typically when you hear a rock song, you dont hear really how the singer is supposed to influence the musical sense of the songs, but when the singer's role is put into a more balanced/equal role with the rest of the musicians, it contributes so much more to the musicality of the song. It is great for beginner musicians to understand that the singer has to be in tune with the band because he is added depth to the music, not just vocals. College music majors might also get a kick out of this album as it widens your music perspective.

These cds from vitamin really show how rock is the next evolution to classical music, it shows that although lyrics were originally added, the artists used the basic form of classical music to write songs. They all contain a theme that is repeated in the music, and most offer a "waltz" part to the song, as well as a lyrical bridge.

Good cd for every so often to change you from the norm. really neat to switch out the lyrics every so often with some classical music. Enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Not Much To Warrant Repeated Listenings.......2005-01-30

Over the past five years, Vitamin Records has released more than fifty of these String Quartet Tribute albums. They have run the gamut from Metallica to Clay Aiken to Alison Krauss to their most recent tribute to 2Pac. This sampler focuses primarily on alternative/heavy metal/grunge artists. So what you get is a collection of songs made famous by Staind ("It's Been Awhile"), Linkin Park ("In the End") and Korn ("Freak on a Leash").

This album (and all of the others) veers awfully close to novelty status. On first listen, it's a real charge to hear teen angst anthems like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" transformed into sedate chamber music. But it doesn't really warrant repeated listenings. The main problem is that after a few songs, they all tend to sound alike. Twenty years ago, the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet would include a Jimi Hendrix composition in live performances and the occasional recording, but they had the sense to know that this wouldn't work over the course of an entire album.

And the idea of juxtaposing classical instruments with popular music goes back even farther. In the sixties, the Hollyridge Strings released a series of albums performing the works of the Beatles, Elvis and the Beach Boys. Bottom line? This album will force you to hear these songs in a new way and might get a laugh or two if you slip it into the CD player at your next party, but there's little here to make you come back after you've heard it once. But at $6.98, it's an inexpensive gag gift for the alternative music fan in your life. [Running Time - 50:37]

5 out of 5 stars Bonus Track on this EP is a MUST.......2007-07-22

I've Been a Soundgarden fan for many years. It's very difficult to pick a favorite song, but "Kyle Petty, Son of Richard" is one of the strongest B-Sides I have ever heard. It's as good or better than "Bleed Together" from the 'A-Sides' greatest hits compilation. It could have easily been included on 'Superunknown'.

If you like Soundgarden or Audioslave and haven't heard this song, this CD is worth the money.

    2 out of 5 stars Just Alright.......2006-12-19

This is the kind of song that you can listen to, but will not stay with you for very long. The lyrics are rather trite, and the instrumentation is just average, by the standards of Tom Morello and company. Not Audioslave's best work.

And to these people complaining about Audioslave being "mainstream:" get over yourselves you pretentious fools! Have we forgotten that Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine were very poplular and made regular appearances on MTV in their day? Being popular does not make a band bad, and being unknown does not make a band good.

1 out of 5 stars Give it up...........2006-08-30

I was at work when I heard that Rage broke up. I went home, got wasted, stayed in my room, and blasted their CDs all night long. Then I heard about Audioslave - I was apprehensive, but couldn't wait to hear the sound. Chris has always been a great vocalist/lyricist. And, the first CD was amazing, especially the track "Set it Off" - arguably the sickest song on the album (thank you, Tom) - you could almost hear the ghost of RATM rise from the past. Could a rich rockstar still write like that? The CD's success was also, in part, due to the group's determination to make it.

I saw them in small venues. They were relatively unknown and had a few hits at that time so they played a lot of RATM and Soundgarden (they even played the entire length of "Outshined" once). Chris' presence on stage was calm, and, in effect, complemented Tom's energy.

By the time they released their second CD, which was mediocre at best, they were already mainstream. The venues were now larger and the crowd was MTV. Not many knew the RATM stuff and fewer knew Soundgarden. I watched, almost in horror, as no one knew the words to "Hunger Strike," which they played during the last tour. I knew - at that moment - that they were going to sell out.

And that they did with this piece of crap. Why? Why? Don't you have enough money already? Do you really enjoy playing for 15 year old kids who are there with their parents? How does it feel to sell out? Will this audience ever understand when you kept quiet for 15 minutes on stage to protest for freedom of speech? Will these kids understand "Freedom?" Do they even know who Mumia Abu Jamal is? Or the Night Watchman?

All I have to say now is, f**k you, Tom, Brad, and TimmyC. You should have gone with B Real. Chris, you're vocal skills are declining with age. You've put out some amazing lyrics, but give it up. Produce a new Seattle sound.

5 out of 5 stars Many Sides to Music.......2006-05-03

It's been difficult, to say the least, to merge the two different sounds and styles together, but it also has been interesting and at time, brilliant. I didn't feel that this song, or anything on Out of Exile matched Like a Stone or I am the Highway but OTOH it's also a completely different album. Fans of RATM have to accept that these guys have grown-up and that after his little climb on the MTV Music Awards Zak proved that his mind was jelly and these guys had to move on.

Be yourself is not a pop-song and does not relate only to young teen agers, if that's what your getting then you are not listening to the verses, or you are too ignorant to understand them.

I have to admit, I was disapointed with Out of Exile and Be Yourself took some time to grow on me, I personally feel Curse and Yesterday to Tomorrow are stronger tracks, still it's better than 99% of the albums released in any given year.

1 out of 5 stars ...And you thought it couldn't get any worse..........2006-04-28

Being a Rage Against the Machine and early Soundgarden fan, I had to buy Audioslave's first album. I know it is mainstream, and I usually stay on the extreme metal underground side, but I had to hear what these two congealed groups would sound like. And...only about 4 good songs out of 14 on the self-titled. Then three years later, this single was released. And the first time I heard it, I couldn't believe that Tom, Brad and Timmy were actually playing. The same guys who delivered crushing themes in their heyday where releasing this garbage. This appeals to the MTV generation. This appeals to the 12-15 year old girls and kids who are depressed. Come on..."Be Yourself". It is obviously aimed for the pop generation. It is a corporate hoax to get us to buy some terrible music from an aging band. In other words, what the?

So, this marks the end of Audioslave. Where are you now, Zack de la Rocha? Are you listening to this? Are you laughing your head off at the filth that your former band and that Chris Cornell from Soundgarden have given us? I officially hate all super groups, and I can't believe that Tom Morello, who is a god, would do this to us. I have been a Rage Against the Machine fan since 1993, and after this single was released, I lost all faith in them. Cornell's voice is terrible now. It sounds like the perfect pop-rock voice. I eventually bought "Out Of Exile" and, not to my surprise, only 1-2 good songs. The rest were sleepers, just like their self-titled. With their second album, they actually slowed down tempos. Yes, even more then they already were. And that's the story with Audioslave.

If you want the roots to this band and how they really sounded when they were in their prime, pick up Rage Against the Machine's four studio albums. Then, pick up "Badmotorfinger" and other early Soundgarden years. Just stay away from any of this Audioslave. It is boring, bland and the MTV/Fuse kids eat it up like a chocolate cake. Or, should I say the Britney Spears, Eminem and Kanye West kids are eating it up. How could Tom, Tim and Brad let Cornell take over this band and destroy it? He is obviously running the band. It has to be either him or the corporate guys who need more money then they can get their grubby hands on. I want Zack de la Rocha back, and I think that every long-time Rage Against the Machine fan wants him back. So, in other words...

    R.I.P. - Rage Against the Machine / Audioslave (1992-2005)

    5 out of 5 stars More Than I Expected.......2007-01-10

I picked up a copy of this at my Best Buy yesterday and I thought, is this a joke? So, I bought it thinking whats the worst, if I don't like it I'll sell it on ebay. When I got home, I popped it into my stereo and couldn't believe it. The songs were sick! I especially loved Spoonman and I Am the Highway. Its like wedding music if you want to add a little edge to when someone walks down the aisle. At my brothers wedding this past Sunday (this isn't a lie) I walked down to Boulevard of Broken Dreams (I'm 16 what can I say? I thought it'd be cool) The orchestra played the song on trumpets and violins and it sounded awesome!! If I couldve been given another chance to pick a song, it'd be a heavy debate between Blvd. and I am the Highway. Anyway, if you like rock, and you would like to hear how Audioslave or Soundgarden wouldve turned out had Tom Morello or Kim Thayil played violin instead of guitars, this album is definitly for you. If your just a fan of the two bands and think itd be cool to hear the two bands played through different (and really cool sounding) instruments, definitly pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars Not For Your Average Rock Fan.......2006-10-07

In looking at other reviews, I can only wonder how big of fans of Audioslave these people are. I mean, I first heard "What You Are" and I fell in love with the band. That being said, if you buy this expecting to hear the same sound, then you need to re-read the title of the CD: "The STRING QUARTET Tribute to Audioslave". This is not for your average rock fan. This is for the people who love Audioslave and Soundgarden (no RATM songs here, though it would have been very interesting if they tried to pull one off) and can appreciate this kind of music. People need to keep in mind that this is not Audioslave nor Soundgarden playing these songs. It's violins and cellos and such. End rant.

Now that that's out of the way, I can say, as a HUGE fan of Audioslave that I love this CD. Sometimes it's good to listen to music that's a little more mellow, music that doesn't involve banging drums and wailing guitars. So if you love Audioslave and Soundgarden and want some music to unwind to, this might be for you. But to avoid reviews like those before this one, I would HIGHLY SUGGEST previewing the music first. (Whodathunkit?!) I did and I liked what I heard.

I listen to music when I do homework; it's become almost necessary for me. I can't concentrate 100% if it's something I can bang my head to, so I usually pick out some slower, softer songs to help me get through the work. I see this as the best of both worlds. I can listen to softer music and be reminded of how much I love this band.

This tribute, however, is not perfect (despite that I've given it five stars). I just think there are some songs that could have been done better. While some of the bands' more popular songs ("Like a Stone", "Black Hole Sun") are pulled off excellently, some others just sound... a little off. Nevertheless, it's still well-played.

Again, for the true fans only.

    5 out of 5 stars What Did I Miss?.......2005-03-28

I read some of the other reviews here and I do not understand where these losers are getting their information.... It ain't from listening to this CD ... That's for damn sure!!! I bought this CD, even though I thought it was going to SUCK based on the reviews here... Well ... It definately doesn't suck... It isn't bad ... & guess what .... I F*&KIn' LOVE IT!!! I think it totally rocks!!! Matt Cameron would LOVE this CD!!!

Don't listen to the reviewers who say this sucks because it DEFINATELY does not suck!!!

I swear to God that I was going to throw this thing in the trash based on what I read here and after I listened to it I ain't throwing nothing away... I love it and you will too.

I don't think that Geoffrey Holtby, Alan Karna "Trashman Al", or Brian P. Harris "Da_VooDooChild" even listened to the CD. I think they are gay or they are deaf idiots with no brains whatsoever.

    1 out of 5 stars What a disgrace!!!.......2005-01-29

I gave it a chance but I couldn't even finish the CD, it was so godawful. The only saving grace to this CD was that this so-called "classical" take on good rock and roll was almost humorous. Like the retarded renditions of pop songs, that some sketch comedies use, in order to poke a little fun at pop culture.

1 out of 5 stars Pure shlock that is not as advertised... I'm talking MIDI.......2004-11-25

A while back, I picked up the String Quartet tribute to Evanescense. I didn't think it was the greatest CD ever, but I thought it was pretty good. I'm into stuff like that, so when I saw the "string quartet" tribute to Audioslave, I decided to pick it up.

Wow, was that a mistake! I mean, there's plenty of bad CDs out there that I've bought in the past... but I've never written to the people behind it before...this time I did! Other bad CDs were at least as advertised. But HOW can you call it a "String Quartet" tribut when there ISN'T A STRING QUARTET involved???

That's right people, this installment of the "string quartet" tributes does not even HAVE a STRING QUARTET!!!!!!!! Wheter you like audioslave, soundgarden, classical music, or any of the above, this album is a TRAVESTY.

This album consists of one guy with some crappy looped MIDI music (albeit wavetable), and another guy with a violin playing over it!!!!! Not only is the music crappy, but it's false advertising! DON'T BUY THIS ALBUM!!! DON'T PAY FOR MIDI MUSIC!!! Vitamin records is trying to make a quick buck off this one.

I don't know how anyone could think this is good. If you think this is anything close to classical music, you're sadly mistaken. Thanks to this album, I will make sure to NEVER pick up another string quartet album again. You would be much better off to pick up some Apocalyptica.
