It's Joan Osborne who sums it up best in the promotional material accompanying this tribute album: " Dolly Parton is a gifted artist cleverly disguised as a media superstar and sex bomb." Osborne's got it right. Beyond and beneath Parton's well-publicized and oft-caricatured curves and angles, lurks the heart and soul of one of modern country music's very best songwriters--the best, perhaps, since the great Loretta Lynn. In fitting celebration of the 35th anniversary of the release of Just Because I'm A Woman, Parton's very first solo album, contemporary leading ladies of country and pop, including Norah Jones, Alison Krauss, Shania Twain, Joan Osborne, Melissa Etheridge, Emmylou Harris, and Sinead O'Connor have offered up worthy new interpretations of some of Parton's classic compositions. That said, some of the highlights here are from lesser-known singers: Mindy Smith's haunting rendition of "Jolene," Kasey Chambers' bitter-sweet take on "Little Sparrow," and Allison Moorer's tender turn on "Light Of A Clear Blue Morning." --Bob Allen

4 out of 5 stars Good... but some songs are lamely done..........2007-03-28

I personally adore Dolly Parton and this album really is a great tribute to her as country music's biggest stars and most influencal voices come together in a great rendition of her best songs!

I personally ADORE Shania Twain's version of "coat of many colors"... I bought the album on this purpose... and I loved it!

3 out of 5 stars Once you hear Dolly the rest .......2006-09-04

pale in comparison.
It is kind of fun hearing the different styles for her brilliant compositions.
Alison Krauss doing a fabu-tastic slower, bluegrassy 9 to 5.
best cut on the cd.
Melissa Etheridge's unique I Will Always Love You. I love the musical arrangements on this one.
Norah Jones tepid the Grass is Blue
Joan Osborne's Do I ever cross your mind(I'd buy her stuff if she sang like this all the time) soft and folksy, really nice.
The genre-defying Shelby Lynne with a totally cool The Seeker
Mindy Smith on Jolene nice enough, but her phrasing is mushy. (Listen to country artist Sherrie Austin for a wonderful cover of Jolene)
EmmyLou with To Daddy. Lovely.
kill me now...Shania Twain murdering the beloved Coat of Many Colors.
Egad, how ghastly. Even with some backup from Alison Krauss and Union Station, Shania just defiles it.
Kasey Chambers on Little Sparrow is not up to the task. At all.
Sinead O'Connor on Dagger through the heart. Not bad, actually.
Allison Moorer on Light of a Clear Blue Morning. Nice version. Could have done without the affectation of the sound effects. Made to sound like a well used vinyl album.
Me'Shell N'Degeocello on Two Doors Down. I expect it works for ya if you like that genre. Not my kind of music but I like it better than Shania. EEK.
and a bonus track with the great lady herself singing
Just Because I'm A Woman.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money........2005-12-24

The main purpose of this album is to remind us how good Dolly Parton really is. Save your money to buy the originals.

5 out of 5 stars (A-) Not Bad - Not Bad at All.......2005-11-09

There is only one or two songs that dont work out but this CD is great - Dont Get me wrong - These are great songs!
The Downside: 9 to 5 dosent have the usual kick to it alison krauss slows it down too much this time! and Two doors down, But the reason why Im being down on it is because im not a fan of rap music!
The Upside: all the other songs

Album standouts: Jolene & The Grass is blue & Light of a clear blue Morning

I also recommend: HUNGRY AGIN, THE GRASS IS BLUE, LITTLE SPARROW,HALOS AND HORNS, FOR GOD AND COUNTRY & THOSE WERE THE DAYS

BUY NOW!!!

4 out of 5 stars 4/5.......2005-09-12

Pretty good tribute album. The best song here is easily Shania Twain's cover of Dolly's classic hit "Coat Of Many Colors", Shania sings this song with great emotion and sincerity.

Album Description

GRAND THEFT AUTO: SAN ANDREAS, OFFICIAL SOUNDTRACK BOX SET:

This 8 CD Set is the indispensable companion to GRAND THEFT AUTO: SAN ANDREAS. The 8 CD's are loaded with the music featured inside the game.

About the Game: Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas, a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers.

Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster. On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the next installment in the blockbuster franchise that has redefined interactive entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Grand theft Auto.......2007-01-10

Brought this game for a friend. He loves it. States the graphics are great. Price was great compared to store prices. Game arrived undamaged.

3 out of 5 stars WTF!?!.......2005-09-26

ok ok ok you do NOT make a GTA CD box with country music in it i mean come on. Mabye when your playing the game but i dont think its right to have one hole frickin' CD dedicated to country music in a GTA box. Also Radio Los Santos has to share a CD with Playback. Obviously the only reason your gana buy this is because of the great rap and mabye for the old school dance music you might share with your parents... NOT LOL!!!
Finally they also cut out some of the best songs from the game
which include "187" Snoop Dog and Dr. Dre, "The Ghetto" (my favorite song) Too Short and many more. Even though they did have did have Slick Rick, Kid Frost and 2pac. There just wasnt enough rap in this box. If they took out the country and had Radio Los Santos have its own CD this would be perfct!

3 out of 5 stars Incomplete........2005-09-06

That about says it all. Now I respect the quality products from Rockstar, although this isn't one of them. Why again must some of the best songs from the radio station be missed out again? I remember the days of Vice City, singing along to the tracks which were unavailable on the soundtrack when it was released separately. Thankfully not many were missed out and I was available to obtain them another way legally. However a huge amount are missed this time. I don't know if it's down to record companies or the artists not letting their songs be placed on or some random with a distaste for the public but one thing's for sure it certainly is inconvenient. Ah well, there's always next time.

4 out of 5 stars All Rights Reserved.......2005-08-03

Well well well. This is the uber game with the uber sound track right? In some respects it is, 8 discs, better cover art and more songs for almost the same price. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, was a smash success for many reasons, one of them in my opinion was the inclusion of the music. I guess I'm a closet 80's music person since I didn't know much about it, but after that game I was out in the store checking out Flock of Seagulls albums. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a great game but I guess I'm not a fan of the 90's as I thought I was, especially music. The discs are set up like music cds, I miss the D.J. interface that Vice City had for each disc, made it personal in a way and the inclusion/exclusion of certain songs can be maddening. I mean why have "Welcome 2 the Jungle" on the commercials but not the ultimate soundtrack? Sure licensing issues aside, I enjoy the pack but again I guess I found out I'm not a 90's type music guy. The only big disappointment on the disc was K-Rose, the country disc. 99% of the songs were not even close to that decade. . . Not to say I want *gulp* Acky Breaky Heart, but hey, it's the time not the quality of music. Good price for the amount of music but not the same for fans of the Vice City ultimate pack.

3 out of 5 stars good collection, but WHY BUY IT?.......2005-07-21

I can see why you might buy this if you don't own the game and just like the songs on the mix, but if you own the PC version of the game you can just listen to the tracks in the car or extract them to Ogg Vorbis and expand them onto CD if you want to.

So I can't really see why if you own the PC game you'd still buy this.

Having said that, I like the selection, and like the Vice City box set (which you can extract to MP3 from the PC game) it has slightly different DJ chatter, which is always funny.

Just try to behave yourself when you put it in your car stereo. Remember, you're NOT playing the game then. It's real life.

As Red Hot Organization celebrations of composers and genres go, Red Hot & Rhapsody is certainly timely, coming as it does at the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin's birth. Like its predecessors, it's also trendily eclectic. While its "groove" sometimes falls on the wrong side of the divide between sinuous and sleepy--a version of "Summertime" by Morcheeba and lite-jazz flutist Hubert Laws that finds vocalist Sky Edwards carefully pronouncing the "g" that isn't in the word "jumpin'"--and Natalie Merchant and Duncan Sheik are just plain wrong for their material, this is a solid disc that makes a good case for having Bobby Womack, Luscious Jackson, Money Mark, and Clark Terry on the same five inches of plastic and aluminum. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars gershwin is always good.......2007-05-11

two years ago, i got this idea for a themed concert. i called it the 'the red hot dance concert' and asked the teachers to select songs from the red hot series, red hot and blue, red hot and dance, red hot and rio, red hot and gershwin and any others we could get our red hot hands on were under immediate consideration.

for some odd reason, 'red hot and gershwin' got passed over quite a bit.

i think i know why. the range of songs and treatments are great ambient music. i love davina's raspy vocals on 'i was doing all right'. they are a great compliment to the baaba maal at the end of the disc. and sinead o'connor's breathy, waif sound is a blessing to 'someone to watch over me', considering that linda ronstadt's blare-through is still upon us from some twenty years ago. stereolab's 's'wonderful' is also chic, cosmo-swirling stuff.

but nothing here really gets the foot to tapping. and it really doesn't need to, either. just put it on and shake the martinis!

4 out of 5 stars Groovy Revisit of Classic Tunes.......2005-07-21

A unique re-mix of fantastic tunes. Everytime I play this CD, friends are asking who is singing and where they can get a copy. A great CD with clever adaptations by Finley "Quaye, Natalie Merchant and Bowie (to name a few).

3 out of 5 stars so-so if you ask me.......2001-08-08

If George Gerswhin heard this cd, he'd probably turn over in his grave. It's just an insult to the man's art to cover his songs by just singing over a Casio beat (refer to tracks 1, 4, 10, 12, 13, and 14). But the biggest disappointments came from the big names on the cd-- namely Natalie Merchant. Her version of "But Not for Me" is soooo boring. Even I can sing it better than she can. Sinead O'Conner didn't do much better with "Someone to Watch Over Me". The only standout track was Clark Terry's "Let's Call the Whole Think Off". Maybe it was best to give these classic songs a 90's facelift and add the drum tracks and all that programming/sampling. Smoke City's "They Can't Take That Away From Me"(song #4) and Sarah Cracknell's "The Man I Love" (song #13) are pretty good. This isn't that bad of a cd, but it could be so much better. Seems like many people liked it by all the 5-star reviews. But if you happen to buy this cd and are a little disappointed, don't be because you're still helping out a wonderful cause.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin With a Beat.......2000-05-23

This album will float you through those sultry summer evenings with its smooth sounds. For the Gershwin lover, for the R&B lover, or for just the lover: it's a purchase you won't regret.

5 out of 5 stars An eclectic collection of sultry sounds and mellow jazz.......2000-05-22

I purchased this CD 2 years ago and it is still my favorite. This CD however is not for the generic jazz music lover. The tone is almost lounge-slow with some of the artists adding their somber interpretation to the songs. Yet the Natalie Merchant version of "But Not for Me" alone makes the album worth buying. Out of all 17 tracks, there is only one song I am not particulary fond of, although it is beginning to grow on me....

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars; very original, interesting, goofy, a solid listen, but not a must-buy by any means.......2006-03-11

There's some really good material on this disc. It's just buried underneath boring, techno-versions of lounge favorites. This CD is great at parties, as I'd imagine, but it's a little weak when listened to as a whole-album by yourself. The highlights (and moments of disgrace) are mentioned below somewhat extensively:

The album starts off with the upbeat, funky song "Hypnotique (Uberzone Remix)," and it's fairly decent, but at seven minutes, it gets too drawn-out and it is a true bore in the end. All hope is not lost, however, because the trance-esque track "Lonesome Road (Y-Ziq Remix)" is a true delight to the ears, and it is one of the better moments on the disc. It does have some annoying and dissonant drum beats that don't match the beautiful flow of the rest of the song, but overall, it's pretty good. Next, you get a very annoying "Watermelon Man" remix that pisses me off every time. Even when I do skip this track, I still hear the name "Watermelon Man" at the very begenning of the song, and it comes pretty damn close to screwing up the entire disc for me. A truly wretched moment on the disc. Then you get an interesting version of the somewhat-catchy Dean Martin & Julie London track "Sway," and it can really get a party started, but when listening to this track all alone, you begin to realize that you're a loser. After that, you get a good James Bond remix (I've played the Nintendo 64 game GOLDENEYE a million times, so this song gets old to me really fast, but for most people this song will be greatly enjoyed). After a horrid track to which I forget its title, THE moment of excellence on this album comes next on the brilliant "Good, Bad, and the Ugly" remix that sounds so great that it makes the disc worth it by itself. A hardcore techno edge is given to the western classic anthem, and it will make anyone feel like a true badass. One rocking anthem that's been played over and over in my stereo. After that, "Do it Again" follows, and it is very terrible. One must wonder who selected some of these tracks, because a lot of them shouldn't have been included on this lounge-compilation. "Séance on a Wet Afternoon" is the following track, and next to the good ,bad, & ugly remix, this track is the best on the disc. I often play "Séance" on chilly October nights. A perfect Halloween song. After that, the rest of the disc is pretty bad, so I won't go into detail.

Overall, I think this CD is worth it just because of the "Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" mix and "Séance On a Wet Afternoon." Too bad the rest of the disc isn't as good. I give it 3.1/2 stars. It was enjoyable, yet it was anything but memorable.

4 out of 5 stars Thank God for Electronic.......2005-04-10

This album is truly the epitome of what happens when you take the oldies that you grew up with (Dean Martin, Julie London, Martin Denny etc.) and by accident dropped them in a bucket of Sulfuric Acid. I highly recomend this album if you are open to new ways of listening to some of the best muscians. Granted, it could have been better but, I truly did enjoy this album and don't regret the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Like a flower bending in the breeze.......2005-04-05

Here's an oddball concept: take some old "adult pop" songs of the '50s and '60s, and give them "electronica" remixes. Surprisingly, the results are actually pretty entertaining. Sure, some of the entertainment value is in the "kitsch" factor, but what's wrong with that? One of the most memorable remixes here is "Sway" by Dean Martin and Julie London. The weird thing is, Dean Martin and Julie London never recorded together. Their vocals on this remix are taken from two different versions of "Sway" which they recorded seperately. But you can't really tell that from listening to the remix here, it's pretty seamless. I don't think everyone will enjoy this album, but if you like to hear music that's somewhat offbeat, you may get a kick out of it.

1 out of 5 stars This CD was a total waste of money.......2004-06-25

I hate this CD and wish I could get every cent back because it is horrible. The beats are all the same, the songs are too long and HORRIBLE remakes. Jump Jive and Wail is the only reasonable song, the others are repetitive, mundane, and just bad. Don't spend a cent on this, you're wasting your money. This CD stinks.

4 out of 5 stars this rises above kitch and is actually good.......2000-05-15

The concept is absurdly clever (brilliantly stupid?) and shouldn't work, but it does. Take some all-time lounge classics (and a few odd songs like the James Bond theme or The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly) and give them to electronic artists to remix. Yet it works well, mainly because of the talent that came on board: Uberzone, U-ziq, Utah Saints, Wagon Christ, Tranquility Bass, Gus Gus, Q-Burns Abstract Message, and more. These are artists who not only have talent, but have shown a a sense of fun and humor in their own productions.

Sure there are a few songs that don't quite pass the muster, but not many. And let's face it, you're buying this for kitch value anyway, so even those songs will have a charm to them. You won't play this often, but it's something you can always pop in to amuse friends, and there's enough cool songs to grab a martini and enjoy it yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Got to like it.......2007-02-01

When I heard samples from this CD, I really wanted to get it. However, when I did and listened the full versions I did not seem to like them that much. There are several pices that I totally do not care for, a few I really like (especially, Bach's pieces), and some I got used to. Overall, I like the CD, but not as much as I though I would.

5 out of 5 stars A gleaming vision of brass sound.......2005-10-18

The Canadian Brass have been a lively and fun force in music for decades, since being brought together in Toronto 'by a gleaming vision of brass sound'. They are now world famous, having delighted and dazzled people in concerts all over the globe. One of the problems for a group such as this is the lack of repertoire readily available, so the group has become expert at arranging pieces for other instruments for their ensemble. They have also commissioned a good number of pieces of their performance.

One such commission is found on this recording, entitled 'The Well-Tampered Bach', a take-off on the Bach work 'The Well-Tempered Clavier'. This is a setting of various pieces by J.S. Bach for brass quintet and drums, worked by Luther Henderson for the ensemble's 1985 appearance in Toronto. Henderson is a frequent arranger and composer for the Canadian Brass, having also put together the 'Tuba Tiger Rag', reminiscent of the World War I era, and jazz pieces like 'Beale Street Blues'.

More traditional composers are represented in arrangement for brass, such as a more standard arrangement for Bach's Fugue in G minor, Mozart's Turkish Rondon, and pieces from Gabrieli, Vivaldi, Strauss, Rossini, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Pachelbel.

The disc has a wonderful blend of pieces classical and modern, 'proper' composition and traditional/folk inspiration, and a very lively and powerful presentation of all the music.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2001-07-20

This CD is amazing. It's a shame more people don't know about this incredible group. I'm a brass player and I just learned of these guys a few months ago. If you like classical music or brass music, this is a must own!

5 out of 5 stars Essential CD.......2000-12-12

If you like the sound of brass and if your tastes run the gamut from Gabrieli to Handy, with stops hither and yon, this CD is essential to your collection. In it, the Canadian Brass demonstrate their amazing ability to play the early Baroque masters right along side the early jazz masters -- and make it seem perfectly natural! In the process, a bit of Rimsky-Korsakov, Mozart and Lord knows what gets thrown in for good measure. Plus, they play a rousing rendition of Bach's "Little Fugue in G Minor." If the music on this CD doesn't get you going, you need to immediately go to the ER at the nearest hospital!

5 out of 5 stars The Best "Best of" the Canadian Brass.......1999-10-26

If you buy one Canadian Brass CD, buy this one. It contains the widest variety of musical eras and styles. Our favorite CB song, Beale Street Blues is hard to find, but on this CD. There are serious, classical selections and fun songs such as the "Tuba Tiger Rag" and "Flight of the Tuba Bee". This is Brass Quintet music at its best!

Much like contemporary Christian, its cousin genre, modern gospel music showcases a larger variety of styles than ever before. The diversity is quite obvious on the WOW Gospel 2001 collection, a 32-track spiritual pick-me-up bound to find favor with most listeners. "Let's Dance," one of the release's hotter grooves, shows this well when the more traditional (Hezekiah Walker & the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir) meets the not-so-traditional (rapper B.B. Jay). Or check out the blistering soul and hard-driving bass lines of John P. Kee and the New Life Community Choir on "Right Here." Of course no gospel collection is complete without a Yolanda Adams ballad ("Still I Rise") and a CeCe Winans tune ("Alabaster Box"). Disc one holds surprises such as ol' Doobie Brother Michael McDonald on Darwin Hobbs's "Everyday." The second disc focuses more on traditional gospel instead of crisp urban pop. You'll have a hard time not raising your hands to the soaring choruses of "Battlefield" by Norman Hutchins. And Aaron Neville brings forth "Mary Don't You Weep" in the classic spiritual style of gospel. Altogether, this collection testifies to the great and varied sounds in today's gospel music scene. --Michael Lyttle

2 out of 5 stars The Wow Gospel I Enjoy the Least!.......2003-08-05

I'm afraid I'm seem to be in the minority here, but I really don't enjoy this particular Wow Gospel album. In fact, in comparison to all of them so far, including the latest one, this is the one I enjoy the least. There are a lot of songs that I can't get into because they aim to be more "fluffy" than substantial, especially on disc 1. This wow is simply one I cannot keep listening too, except for Shackles, Closer, and Rejoice (especially Closer by Lamar Campbell and co, which really ministers to me). Once by Londa Larmond is another favorite. If I would have gotten this when it came out, I would have been listening to this song everyday. But since I have her album, I must admit that the novelty has worn off somewhat.

This is truly my least favorite. This was from the 2000 season mostly, where it seemed gospel artists were trying way too hard to be "cool" and appeal to the masses but missing a lot of substance. It's just not one I can just listen to over and over, like the 1st 2 in the series. Even 2000 and 2002 are a little better than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Shared with my family.......2001-07-28

This album ministers to ones spirit thru songs like; "We fall down". I highly encourage folks to get the whole Wow Gospel series. The cds help propell one further into the spirit world and they help further ones connection to the Creator and knowledge of God.

2 out of 5 stars encouragement.......2001-06-07

I listen to Disc 2 every single day. I have others, but certain songs on this CD really touches me. As I strive to walk closer with the Lord, some obstacle always seems to find its way into my pathway. But when I listen to "Closer" and "Nothing Else Matters" my mind is clear of all that is going wrong that day or in my life. Why? Because I know that there is a God up above that seats high and looks low and will not let any hurt, harm, or danger come upon His children that love Him and want to do right by His will. It's trully my inspiration.

4 out of 5 stars i enjoyed it.......2001-05-05

I really enjoyed this compilation as well as the others. It did help me in knowing who was good in gospel and worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars WoW, Excellent As Usual..........2001-03-27

As always the WoW compilation is excellent! ..., but besidesthat it's all good.

DISC ONE:

The first five tracks on the firstdisc of WoW are very prestigious territory which I've noticed over theyears have been reserved for the 5 biggest and hottest songs of theyear, so naturally the album starts off with "Shackles [PraiseYou]" by Mary Mary, the biggest Gospel song of the year andpossibly the decade, basically to make track one on WoW you must havea video, an at least gold album and secular airplay. Then there's thehot "Let's Dance [Remix]" by first 5 track favorite HezekiahWalker & the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir which features gospelrapper B.B. Jay. Then there's another top 5 favorite John P. Kee, whomade it to track 1 with "Strength" back on WoW Gospel 1999and made track one one the second disc on WoW Gospel 1998 with"Stand". He's back at track 3 with his & the New LifeCommunity Choir doing their new single "Right Here". Nowhere's another top 5 favorite Fred Hammond & Radical for Christwith "I Want My Destiny [Live]", an unreleased version ofthe song from their 2000 pay per view special. And to round out thetop 5 is "That'll Do It", a blazin' hot track from Anointedfrom their to be released and named fifth album. Other standouts onthis disc are the hot "It's Alright [Send Me]" by WinansPhase II, "Personal Jesus" by the always controversial,Tonex, "His Love" by B.B. Jay, "Walk Right" byCommissioned, "Everyday" by Darwin Hobbs featuring MichaelMcDonald, "Fall Down 2000" by Kelli Williams, "I CameTo Jesus" by New Direction, and "Real" by theTommies.

DISC TWO:

The more traditional second disc starts outwith Shirley Caesar's newest single "Rejoice" and then movesinto the super tradional "Battlefield" by Norman Hutchinsand then "At The Table" by Richard Smallwood. Afterward isprobably the most beautiful song of the year. "We Fall Down"by Donnie McClurkin and Helen Baylor's "If It Had Not Been ForThe Lord On My Side" to round out the top five. Standouts on thesecond disc include the emotional "Memories [When Will I See YouAgain?]" by the Canton Spirituals feat. Albertina Walker and thehot, "The Holy Place" by Ricky Dillard & the NewGeneration Chorale. Now as far as the three unreleased songs on the CDthere's "I Anoint Myself" from the F. Hammond Presentsalbum and features RFC Soloist PamKenyon McDonald, .... Then there'sthe upbeat "Once" by Londa Larmond and to end there's"Better Days" by the male twosome, .... As usual the firstdisc is the saving grace of this series.

1 out of 5 stars Coward Spinning in Grave.......2007-05-12

Amy resemblance beween the witty, ironic, cutting-edge music of Noel Coward and this CD is negligible, except in the title song. The musicians had no concept of these songs and probably had never heard them before. The people singing could not read music. (I.e., the melodies were wrong.) The percussion totally drowned out everything else. The musical director and producer of this CD had no clue what they were doing. The arrangements are among the worst I have ever heard of anybody's literate music. I play the piano and specialize in 20th century Broadsway, London, and Hollywood music. This was the worst CD of its kind I have ever heard. (And it didn't have to be this way -- the cenntennial recording of Cole Porter's similar music, "Red Hot & Blue," nicely updated, sung, and arranged by then contemporary singers, was a wonderful introduction for the uninitiated to the sophisticated music of people like Kern, Porter, Coward, Weill, etc. -- the musical giants of the 20th century.)

1 out of 5 stars A disgraceful Travesty.......2006-07-05

Words cannot describe the disgust I feel for what this group of "artists" has done to the work of Noel Coward. Avoid it like poison.

1 out of 5 stars Forget it...Forget it...Forget it..........2005-04-04

The idea is not bad. Contemporary pop performers doing classic Noel Coward songs. Unfortunately, despite some talented individuals, the songs are almost without exception ruined by interpretations that destroy Cowards' sense of melody, tempo and lyric.

The word abysmal comes to mind. Coward was understated, subtle, mischievous, sentimental and melodic in his music. These characteristics are undiscovered on these performances.

Paul McCartney is one of the few who tries to do Coward justice and seems to at least have the musical sensibilty to understand what his song is about. Even Elton John, who has the ability and talent to do better, sadly disappoints on Twentieth Century Blues.

If you want contemporary Noel Coward, look at the cast CD of All For Love, the 1999 show featuring Twiggy and Harry Groener. They get it right!

1 out of 5 stars Twentieth Century Blues: Songs of Noel Coward.......2004-05-28

I was extremely disappointed in this recording. If someone had tried to destroy the music of this famous British composer they could not have done a better job. A couple of the tracks we OK, Paul McCartney and Sting tried to sing the songs as they were meant to be sung and are the only saving grace and the reason I will keep this CD, but otherwise the artists did a poor job. Mad Dogs and Englishmen was absolutely destroyed and the witty piece Don't Put Your Daughter on the Stage was sung as a Rap song, it was horrible. The beautiful wartime song London Pride, that could bring tears to the eyes of a Londoner, was unrecognizable. Do not buy this CD, if you long to hear the songs as they were intended to be sung.

3 out of 5 stars NOEL COWARD: ALMOST UNKILLABLE..........2002-06-04

It's a 'cute' sort of idea -- take a group of current 'pop' music icons and have them personalize, as it were, the rather creaky songs of the late Noel Coward. It's also cute to have such artist as Paul McCartney, Marianne Faithful, and Elton John slug their way through Coward's sophisticated lyrics, and even the inclusion of (Oh, my!) The Pet Shop Boys, Sting, Texas, and Suede, can't really deter the almost unkillable Coward music. A universally recognized theatre artist, Coward's plays have survived for decades (note the current Broadway hit of his "PRIVATE LIVES"), but except for cabaret and revue type treatments, his musicals are very rarely revived and, I believe, rather unknown to the general public. One of the reasons for this is because his works were rarely recorded by others and few came into the 'popular' market. Coward's music (not unlike most all his work) was often times created for himself and his voice -- at least in terms of nuance, delivery and style -- and few others have been able to 'get away' with that. For the novice 'Coward' fan the cd is a suitable menu of Coward's work, and it should be noted that the endeavor is a not-for-profit release with proceeds going to the Red Hot AIDS Charitable Trust, so no harm done. However, the die-hard fans of that eclectic listing of artists who get this cd because of them, will probably be disappointed if not down-right befuddled. The recording itself (technically, the sound, etc.) is Mah--velous!
