Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Widely acknowledged as the most significant and accomplished tenor saxophonist in the world, Sonny Rollins's recording legacy is nothing short of extraordinary. Beginning as a sideman in the late-'40s, he worked with Charlie Parker, Fats Navarro, Bud Powell, Max Roach, Clifford Brown, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, and Miles Davis. Since recording his first date as a leader in 1954, Rollins has recorded dozens of albums for numerous labels, eventually settling in for a long stay on Milestone. Way Out West, recorded in 1957, is one of two superb albums cut for the small, California-based Contemporary label (the other is 1958's Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders). Although a consummate sideman, Rollins rarely seems at ease with his pianists on his own dates, and Way Out West's trio format, with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne, dispenses with that problem. The tenorman's playful humor is evident in the album's selections, which include such unlikely candidates as "Wagon Wheels" and "I'm an Old Cowhand"--both elevated to previously unimaginable heights. This is a remarkably confident album--relaxed, swinging, thoughtful and deeply satisfying. Classic cover art, but the music is even better.......2007-05-21

This album is routinely mentioned as a classic and one of Sonny Rollins's best. For whatever reason, that acclaim doesn't translate into the same popularity attained by Saxophone Colossus. Nevertheless, if you like Sonny Rollins's playing or jazz from the mid-to-late 50s then you should definitely put this one in your shopping cart.

Sonny was one of the big innovators of the saxophone trio format -- saxophone, bass, drums -- and this was his first recording with such a lineup. Getting rid of the piano has several implications. The first is that the harmonies become a lot less obvious to the listener without the piano banging out the chords every few seconds. The second is that there's a lot more pressure on the musicians --- particularly the saxophonist, but also the bassist -- to generate interest without using piano solos as a crutch. There's a lot more space to be filled in, and in the hands of lesser musicians this space would turn into gaping holes.

Fortunately, Sonny Rollins is one of jazz's greatest improvisers. The fact that he doesn't have to share solo space with a pianist on this recordings means he can let loose some brilliant, unfettered and uninterrupted improvisations. There's a LOT of Sonny's playing on this album. Sonny's notorious for the humor/wit in his playing and there's a ton of that here.

Sonny's companions on this date for Contemporary Records were bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne. Manne was one of the premier drummers on the west coast and appeared on a lot of Contemporary sessions. Manne wasn't a "power drummer" like most of the drummers that appeared on Sonny's east coast recordings (Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, and Max Roach). That means that he's content to be an accompanist rather than an almost equal partner a la Max Roach.

The compositions offer a nice amount of variety. "I'm an Old Cowhand" is the kind of semi-cheesy tune that Sonny specializes at transforming and gives the album a great start. "Come, Gone" is just straight-up fast bebop. "Solitude" and "There Is No Greater Love" are intense ballad performances. "Wagon Wheels" is a medium-tempo jam, and "Way Out West" closes the album on a jaunty note. The overall mood is more mellow and introverted than Saxophone Colossus; the album was recorded in the middle of the night, so this is not surprising.

One annoying thing about some versions of this album is that the alternate takes are placed in the middle of the album (immediately following the masters), destroying the album's original sequence. I recommend looking for the now-out-of-print 20 bit remaster or any other version that places the alternates at the end of the album, where they belong. The alternate takes are actually fascinating to explore once you get to know the original album, as two of the tunes are given much longer explorations.

This album is highly recommended and an essential part of any collection. If you like Sonny in a trio format, other albums to check out are A Night at the Village Vanguard (Blue Note), The Freedom Suite (Riverside/OJC), and East Broadway Rundown (Impulse!). I'm probably forgetting some others. And of course, if you haven't heard Saxophone Colossus, be sure to pick that one up.

Saxophone, Bass and Drums make a great Trio. .......2006-10-26

Sonny Rollins, Ray Brown and Shelly Mann are all superb on this 71 minute album. It comprises 6 tunes; three of which have alternate takes added as bonus tracks. The originals and alternates are similarly compelling. Although my personnal favourite is Wagon Wheels, all 9 tracks are excellent.

The uncanny sense of space and the Western mood created by the trio make the cd great listening.

I am a big fan of Sonny Rollins and his happy, muscular, witty, rich and edgy sound. This album sees all three musicians in marvellous form, with the rhythm section brilliantly creating the illusion of movement.

I would recommend this as THE album to buy to begin a Sonny Rollins collection.

No words can adequately describe the treat that awaits you; however some may point in the right direction. They are; lyrical, witty, warm and imaginative. Way Out West is most original and is one of my favourite cds.

Perfect production........2006-08-31

It's Sonny Rollins trio. Can somebody play better in late 50's ? And perfect production too. Like band's playing in my living room. I love similar productions, it's the best in jazz. Only two songs are composed by Rollins, but no problem in his music is essantial his solo playing. No highlights, whole album is perfect with beautiful resourceful playing. Must for any true jazz fan.

Way Out;Best.......2005-12-15

Sonny Rollins appears to be at the top of his game on this album,he recorded in '57,with Shelley Manne on drums and Ray Brown on bass.I just don't understand why he felt he needed to take off '59 to '61 from public performing to practice on The Williamsburg Bridge before coming back with 'The Bridge';maybe seeing him on the bridge could beat 'Way Out West' and 'The Bridge',but nothing else could. I also can't understand why 'Way Out West' includes two takes of some of the tunes,beginning with
'I'm An Old Cowhand';it was brilliant on the first take...and the second..

I Must Have Been Sleeping........2005-10-08

Believe it or not, this reviewer has been a Jazz fan for years and surprisingly had never heard anything by Sonny Rollins until this week with the purchase of "Way Out West". I must say that listening to this album was like unlocking a door to a mansion (like my discovering of John Coltrane was) and there definitely will be more Sonny albums making their way to my collection soon.
With that out of the way, onto the music itself: "Way Out West" was recorded in 1957 and finds Rollins playing in a piano-less trio backed only by bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne. The liner notes to the album state that the three musicians hadn't played together before until this recording session. You'd never know it by listening to this album though. Rollins, Brown and Manne play off each other effortlessly and are like six hands in a glove. It's as if they'd played together for years.
On the upbeat tracks, "I'm an Old Cowhand", "Come Gone" and the title track, Rollins and his trio really swing and leave plenty of space for improvisation and soloing. "Come Gone" is an especially prime example of this.
The same can be said for the slower ballad-oriented pieces. Sonny's take on Duke Ellington's "Solitude" is superb and soothing and is a real standout. "Wagon Wheels", while not neccesarily a ballad, is also a standout with its mid-tempo blues-like runs.
Besides the original tracks that made up the album, there are also three alternate takes tacked on as bonus tracks. The alternate version of "I'm An Old Cowhand" is arguably stronger than its master take and is also twice as long running at 10 minutes rather than five and a half. The alternates of "Come Gone" and the title track are performed in such a way that they almost become different pieces of music altogether. Rollins solo in the alternate "Come Gone" is more raspy and edgy which gives the impression that this take was recorded live in a club rather than a studio. It's fabulous too.
With that said, "Way Out West" is an excellent first choice for the emerging Sonny Rollins fan. The playing is excellent and the musicianship is flawless. The only minor complaint is that the bonus alternate takes are presented on the CD after their master take counterparts (example: The master take of I'm An Old Cowhand is immediately followed by its alternate take as is "Come, Gone" and "Way Out West"). They should have been sequenced at the end of the disc following the original album tracks. Apart from that, who really cares? This is a great album with great music on it.

Album Description

As dance music has evolved, so too have Way Out West. What originally began life as a producer-based outfit has grown over the years. After two years of almost constant production work, writing and recording, the band are set to release their third, and self-proclaimed, "best album to date" Don't Look Now.

Originally a duo, Bristol, UK-based producers Nick Warren and Jody Wisternoff - top class international DJ's in their own right; the pair have added a `secret weapon'. Enter Omi. A featured vocalist on tracks for Starecase, Timo Maas, an all girl drum `n' bass outfit, Eden and the one and only Peter Gabriel, Omi brings an emotional authenticity to Don't Look Now that is sorely lacking on so many other electronica artist albums. Fans of Way Out West's past releases won't be disappointed, but neither will fans of Sarah McLachlan or Dido. It's just that sort of album.

Don't Look Now glides from the staccato kick-drum and yearning vocals of upcoming single, `Anything But You,' to the epic space age poignancy of `Everyday.' Luscious soundscapes shift gracefully from the textured balearia of `Chasing Rainbows' to the main room dirty odyssey of `Killa' through to rollicking bongo twists and mangled basslines on `Fear.'

The album also includes a second CD bonus mix by DJ's Nick Warren & Jody Wisternoff featuring tracks from Gray Area, Martin Buttrich, Hiratzka & Kazell, and Way Out West.

If I had 1 CD to bring to a deserted island..........2007-04-25

I've listened to this CD non-stop in my car for the past 4 months. And I have still yet to grow sick of this CD. With most CDs, the novelty wears off and it's impossible to listen to the CD without rotation. It's such a different CD than Intensify--- dare I say more radio-friendly?

While there are a few vocal tracks on this CD, I don't think it detracts at all from Way out West's reputation for producing quality house music. With a good interjection of groovable non-vocal tunes like Killa, Northern Lights, Apollo, and Chasing Rainbows it definitely helps to offset the flavorful Don't Forget Me, Just Like a Man, and Melt.

If you loved Intensify, there's no question you'll love Don't Look Now. It's a more mature effort and it really sets the bar high for WOW's as an artist that will be difficult to beat.

The 2nd CD is definitely more like house music and has a more underground flavour. The vocal tracks are far and few, and while many might be tempted to ignore it-- it's really a nice gem they've put together. Tracks like WOW's own Pulse of Life and Gold Is Your Metal.

CD 1 is well-worth the pricetag alone. But CD2 is a nice gem they've added in.

I'm a huge electronic music lover and have listened to just about all the major electronic artists. I grew tired of a lot that was coming out into the scene. But WOW has always been producing inventive tracks and music, and I'm definitely looking forward to their next effort.

Good Album, But Not Great.......2005-12-09

This album is not on the level as Way Out West's self titled album, but it is well composed and overall a quality album (CD1). W.O.W. use a lot of female vocal work in the tracks on this album. A couple of the tracks are enhanced by the vocal work, but most are deflated by the plain, steryotypical, overdone, and superficial lyrics which is a shame becuase most of the musical composition is very well done. I think people that are into the club scene or have a significant other that is into more "feminine" electronica would really enjoy the album.

The songs do tend to take on a "sameness" because of the heavy use of VAs, Romplers, and heavy filter use. Some analog synth work would have helped make the sound of the tracks more lively and diverse. The drum work is excellent as always.

CD2 is a progressive mix. I'm not much into the style so my opinion will be biased. I'm sure there are many people that would think it is great, but I found it to be too soft.

It's a good stuff, typical Nick Waren's cooking. Sound of the album is no different, than it was on their first CD four years ago. Do not miss Warren's new "Shanghai" album - out july 12th, I heard a promo - it rocks!!!

superb clarity and emotion.......2005-05-21

I was skeptical when I first picked up this cd (my first experience with way out west) but was pleased after a few listens. I was drawn to this album after hearing the radio-ready first track, and though I tired of it fairly quickly I found there was much to be discovered on the rest of the album. Way out west is superbly fine-tuned original techno, the kind that's hard to find in a sea of DJ mixes and traditional compilations. The first cd is addictive and grows on you quickly... Lots of heavy emotion and drama, and great vocals though most tracks are instrumental. The beats are heavy but crisp, and the noises are creative and varied, keeping you interested throughout the journey.

The Best Kept Secret in Country Music!.......1999-01-19

The minute the CD started to play and I heard Wylie's rich full voice on Hello Heartache I knew this was going to be the best music I have heard in years! Wylie brings back the romance of the old west with a vocal range that goes from deep and warm to the highest yodel with ease. I have shared this CD as well as his new release, Total Yodel, with all my friends and everyone, including my daughter's 22 year old city slicker boyfriend, has been delighted by his incredible talents. I predict that some day this band will be a household word!

Really loved this CD from the first notes of the first cut. Wylie sounds like a combination of Elton Britt, Marty Robbins, Merle Haggard, and all of the country greats that were such a big part of making country music as popular as it is. I am an ardent Mary fan, and was pleased to see this released on CD. I did not know it before: I was only familiar with the best cuts as chosen for "Things We Said Today."

And those are indeed the cream of this collection. Those are 6 star songs. Though I don't love Way Out West, the others are absolute knockouts. Several of her most tender, most lovely, most moving songs. The ones left behind on this CD do not measure up. They are indeed weaker, and owning (or buying) "Things We Said Today" seems a far wiser decision.

That being said, I will say the transfer on these is glorious. I have not compared side by side, but these sound a little fuller than the versions I've been enjoying for years on TWST. And there were a couple of cuts I will be enjoy having. But the overall quality is not there. And Let It Be Me and Ballad of a Wanted Man just plain ol' stink.

So, buy lots of Mary. Just get the Greatest Hits version instead.

Joni Mitchell goes west.......2004-06-16

Great Stuff! I'm an ardent Joni fan, so placing Mary McCaslin in the same box is praise, indeed. With her haunting voice, Ms McCaslin brings us tales of a young woman moving out west, growing up, being lonesome, finding friends and dating the wrong guys.

Without any truly sexual lyrics, this album takes "Sex in the City" out to the country where a promise of better heart times are for the taking. "Young Westly" takes me awayayayay and "A Most Wanted Man" speaks to the heartaches of taking risks in love, all the while knowing it's likely to come to a bad end. "San Bernadino Waltz" echoes and surpasses "Love the One You're With" and "Change Partners" for a story about swapping lovers and freeer love.

Without a lot of electronics, back beats or flashy guitars, "Way Out West" is a study in melody, tune and story telling. A "Must Have" for anyone who loves the "Rounder" way of life.

WAY OUT WEST IS ON MY TOP TEN LIST.......1998-06-21

I've been waiting years for Way Out West to be released on CD. Unless you just hate "folk" or "singer-songwriter" music, this should be in your collection. A young girl's dreams of "the West" mix with a young woman's experiences in this song cycle. Mary's ultimate dissing of the "California girl" in Oh Hollywood is a classic! Yet at heart Mary is sweet without being sacharine. You just wish she was there in the CD player so you could hug her. Way Out West is on my top ten list of all recordings ever made.

British DJ-producer Nick Warren has long been making mixes and music for highway consumption. If this is the music of tomorrow, then I guess I'd be better off listening to a dripping faucet.

Most songs consist of beating one idea into the ground, or in the case of several of the 'versions' of them, one idea into the ground for 'Part I', into the subsoil for 'Part 2', and into the bedrock for the 'vocal mix'.

Way Out West will never be confused with Brian Eno or Philip Glass, and this CD will never be confused with 'Music for Airports' or 'Einstein on the Beach'.

One of the best progressive trance/electronic albums!.......2005-06-29

Though not their first release, this was the first WOW album i obtained, and it's a great point of introduction for anyone interested in learning more of what drives electronic dance music. The production is top-notch, the beats are varied and persistent, and the shifting atmospheres make for a very enjoyable listen, whether it be in your car (i highly recommend this for latenight drives!) or on the dancefloor.
"The Fall", "Activity" and "Call Me" lead off the disc with lots of energy, which persists almost throughout the remainder. Only "Mindcircus" and "Intensify Part 2" slow things down a tad, but are strong vocal numbers that give your legs a well-deserved break from tapping. "UB Devoid" and "Intensify Part 1" will appeal to fans of hard trance, although WOW aren't a one trick pony...there are bits of house, breaks, ang good old fashioned rock structures in the mix. As a big fan of electronic dance music, i was very impressed with the bar set by "Intensify". In my opinion, it's Way Out West's best release.

When I first got Way Out West's "Don't Look Now" I was disturbed by the overall feminine touch, though it grew on me quickly and I discovered the album's inner greatness. On this release, I was more instantly gratified. Though the feminine touch is still present on a couple of tracks, the overall album is more upbeat and hard-hitting in comaprison. The sounds are fine-tuned and hi-tech, with lots of fluid and well-layered production. Every now and then a piano or exotic flute shines through for an ethereal moment. Great Album... especially "Sharkhunt," "Secret," "Mindcircus" and "Activity". Fans of Hybrid, Sandra Collins, Deepsky, etc. won't be disappointed

Unimaginative and Uninspired.......2005-04-29

I am not impressed with this album. I had heard an excerpt of 'Mindcircus' on iTunes, and had imagined that the song in its entirety would be massive. On the contrary, cheesy female vocals interlock a repetitive (if otherwise decent and catchy) piano hook. The use of middle-Eastern inspired tunes on 'Secret' is also very uninspired, and midway through the song the beat changes in a way that makes me really just want to stop dancing and put on something cheesier, as long as it had a tighter beat.

Very upsetting. This is not an album I would recommend.

In this album, Way out West bring their great progressive trance sound to us in a way that is slightly mixed, yet slightly not. The opening track is inspiring and memorable and the rest of the album just builds from its beginning. Truly a must for any trance-addict's collection. Buy it...you won't be disappointed.

W.O.W. Great Development.......2003-02-26

Many of the tracks on this album are like three or four trance epics in one. They literally take you on journey. I think Sequoia is the best example of this. I'm sort of afraid to hear anything else by them, fearing I'll have to buy all their other CD's. When I first got it, I was obsessed with Gift. Then later Sequoia. Then Domination. Right now it's Dancehall Tornado that I can't get enough of. I've never had another album do that to me before.

this album is just worth getting for one song--The Gift. the album is great, don't get me wrong, but if youre reading this review its probably because you have heard of way out west before. youll get the original mix of The Gift in this c.d. a totally awesome song that mixes the beauty of the female vocals as well as the brightest and most energetic sounds that youve ever heard.

Stellar & timeless.......2001-04-12

Way out West's eponymously titled debut album is an unsung gem of electronic dance music. Some of the tracks on this album date as far back as '94 ("Ajare"), but their timelessness shines through as they have aged well. Predominately a more sample-based and instrumental album, the majority of the tracks are introspective and require focused listening. Otherwise, one can miss the complexities lying underneath. That's not to say the album can't be enjoyed without taking notice of the said polymorphic layers. On the contraire, it can be enjoyed in almost any state of mind, as it has varying tempos and moods. It offers a hearty serving of trip hop, ambient, breakbeat, progressive house and trance, all served up on one delectable platter. Don't walk, run before it's too late and the last copy is sold. And look out for wow's new album forthcoming "Intensify" on Distinctive Records this summer (2001)!

This album symply rocks, and continues to rock after the thousandth time. It... you in like some sort of melodic journey. Way Out West stands alone in its own field, with its closest neighbours being Orbital or Ku-ling Bros.

Beautiful........2000-10-06

This album is actually tiled "Blue", which is the first track in the album. It had a beautiful video clip with it, starring Harry Dean Stanton in a minor role. I got it in Berlin, but never saw it in the US. The whole album starts rather melancholic, but then brightens up toward the end, and the whole thing is sort of techno dance type of music, but it has depth, even when it is up-tempo and bright. I can't really think of any other like this, but I highly reccoment it.

When these two comrades of California roots music get together, sailing sparks always seem to follow. As a sequel to 1996's Bakersfield Bound, Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen reunite with the hot-picking members of their legendary Desert Rose Band to find common ground between bluegrass, Cajun, honky-tonk, Tex-Mex, and country rock. Though neither is a hall-of-fame lead singer, their proficient, brotherly harmonies galvanize these excellent originals--six by Hillman, two by Pedersen--and standards by folks like Roger Miller, Ray Price, and the Louvin Brothers. And on their urgent version of the Monroe Brothers' "Old Cross Road" they really do sound like kin separated at birth. Roots of country rock . . ........2005-01-17

What comes through loud and clear in this wonderfully retro album of songs is Hillman and Pedersen's deep affection for a whole range of country's musical traditions. There are some of their originals here and several oldies ("Save the Last Dance for Me," "No Longer a Sweetheart of Mine") and compositions by Roger Miller and the Louvin Brothers. One song with a rockin' backbeat, "Our Love It Don't Come Easy" has a great contemporary sound, but mostly this is the sound of the 1950s country music that inspired Hillman and Pedersen's 1970s country rock.

Singing in harmony, they can sound like the Everly Brothers, especially in a rockabilly number like "There You Go" and "Problems." The dance-able "Invitation to the Blues" gives a nod to Buck Owens. Hillman's yearning "Better Man Than That" pays homage to every heartfelt song of romance and regret ever played on a honky-tonk jukebox. "The Old Cross Road" is unadulterated fire-and-brimstone country gospel, and then Pedersen's "Sugar Cane" is pure bluegrass. Meanwhile, "That's the Way It Was" is full of Cajun flourishes. And on and on.

The range of country styles, sentiments, old songs and new, the excellent studio musicians (including an accordian), and the great harmony singing of these two greats of California country rock make this a CD to listen to over and over. The CD comes with a 16-page booklet with song lyrics, pictures of Hillman and Pedersen as boys, and an appreciation by author Alan Rockman.

McCabe's #3 - Chris Hillman & Herb Pederson 01-10-2003.......2003-01-11

This is review number 3 - I went to the late show (10:00pm) and I wish this concert could have gone on 'til 2am. Chris and Herb (With "Dan" from the old Desert Rose Band on bass) were superb!! For most of this particular concert, Chris and Herb featured material from this new album. My favorites would be "No Longer A Sweetheart of Mine", "There You Go", Better Man Than That" and a fine remake of the old Bluegrass staple "Old Cross Roads". They came across very fluid (And cracking odd jokes-poking fun at each other, etc.) Toward the end, Chris got a little nostalgic from The Byrds days by playing "Mr Tambourine Man" "Turn, Turn, Turn" and "Eight Miles High" - Amazing. All on his mandolin too!! (Not a bass to be seen!!) The encore included an old song from his Burrito Bros. days and then he picked up his guitar and played the final song - a cover of the 70's Firefall classic "It Doesn't Matter" in an sweet acoustic folk-rock style that no one could duplicate. All in all, a great concert. Got to meet the group after the show, Chris had signed my copy of "Way Out West" with this inscription "Joe, All The Best - Chris Hillman". I have mixed feelings about this album. In all fairness, it isn't a bad effort. It's just that when I pay money for recorded music I hope that it will possess two qualities: innovation and enthusiasm. This album missed the mark in both respects. Chris has an average singing voice that doesn't offend the ears and Herb hits some good high notes. What disappointed me most was Hillman's mandolin playing. He has an odd style of picking that someone taught him about forty years ago and he has never progressed with it. This album has some really good musicians. Too bad one of them didn't take over the mandolin chores.

Simply put, this is excellent country rock, bluegrass, folk music. Good picking is good picking and this is good pickin! This matches or exceeds other Hillman solo cd's and is as good as anything done by the Desert Rose Band. No songs really stand out, but taken as a whole, this is a quality listen. This is what quality music is all about. Too bad there isn't more out there like this...Enjoy.
