From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
Twenty-five years an unwearied folk minstrel and educator, James "Sparky" Rucker writes songs from the heart and embraces spirituals and traditional blues so masterfully it's disarming. His touch on acoustic guitar is sure and his gnarled voice taps a well of feeling where gentleness and a strong sense of social justice coexist. The maternal side of the family provides him with pleasant harmonica and an infrequent harmony. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

The first time you listen to this disc you will undoubtedly be transported directly back to your childhood. Charles Schulz's Peanuts characters will go toe-tapping and funky-dancing through your mind's eye. Play it a few more times, though (ignoring the dialogue snippets, if you can), and you will begin to truly revel in Guaraldi's wonderful, humorous, deep piano playing. You'll hear why he's such an influence on new age ivory tickler George Winston, but you'll also realize that Winston's holiday music never quite sparkles with the underlying passion, and humor, that twinkles in these grooves. Buy it for the nostalgia--keep it because it will remain one of the most enchanting albums in your holiday collection. --Michael Ruby

Amazon.com's Best of 1998

Although this collection intends to transport the soul, it has a tremendously potent low-end depth to it that earns high marks indeed in the worlds of vocal and liturgical music. Dmitri Bortniansky's "Hymn of the Cherubim" is performed with a gracefulness that gets a warming fatness from the production, as does Alexander Gretchaninov's "I Have Chosen the Blissful," which travels with a ringing resonance. In a year of fine choral works--check out Sequentia's Hildegard cycle box, 900 Years or Arvo Pärt's Kanon Pokajanen for a "something old, something new" mix--this collection is highly valued for its sonic integrity and its excellent anthological mix. --Andrew Bartlett

Words cannot describe poignantly enough the exquisite, angelic voices that permeate the heart and exalt the soul on Sacred Treasures. The most highly regarded Russian and Bulgarian choirs sing the hymns of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Lvovski, and other composers in the Russian Orthodox Church's tradition of "Divine Worship" (worship through chant). From the first tolling bells that open the CD with a willowy, floating piece from Rachmaninov's Liturgy of St. John, to the final bells closing the door on "Hymn of the Cherubim" (Grigory Lvovski), this CD creates a gentle, distinctly Byzantine glory. The rhythms slowly wisp along while the choirs' baritones, tenors, and sopranos mesh into one expansive blessing. Meant to comprehensively gather not all Russian liturgical pieces but rather hymns that emote an inner tranquility and celestial grace, Sacred Treasures plays like a piece of heaven on Earth. --Karen Karleski

The sense of beauty emerge within us as these chorals fill the space of our head and heart. A music written by real masters and interpreted by voices rarely heard. Beautiful.

A terrific production...a wonderful selection; great phrasing. See also "Holy Love" by 'Rossica Choir'

5 out of 5 stars Divine Beauty and Peace! .......2006-12-03

I am the producer of this CD and also of "SACRED TREASURES III: Choral Masterworks From Russia and Beyond" as well as "SACRED TREASURES IV: Quiet Prayers" and "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit". In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. Most of the pieces on this compilation (as on the other compilations mentioned above) are filled with lush harmonies sung by large mixed choirs. All the selections are deeply nourishing to the soul.

In many cases, I chose to use excerpts from longer pieces, omitting the exultant huge crescendos and very fast sections that are typical of Russian sacred music, presenting only the slow and quiet verses. One reviewer complained about the omission of the final (loud and fast) part of the Cherubic hymns, saying this is the best part, but I completely disagree! I feel that the slow "adagio" sections are by far the most beautiful parts, and that is what you will hear on these CDs.

Different types of music serve different needs, and in today's stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world--to "lay aside all earthly cares" (as the "Cherubic Hymns" on this CD prescribe) and to rest in a magical, quiet space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of these albums, including this one, "SACRED TREASURES: Choral Masterworks from Russia"!

3 out of 5 stars A Soviet version of Russian music.......2006-05-29

I admit to some strong bias here, having sung on the recording of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy available here from the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York. I was in that choir for five years, and our conductor's view of how to properly interpret Russian music became my own.

Because of Stalin's efforts to cleanse the country of the influence of religion, many musicians and composers were sent to Siberia. They were replaced with those from peasant backgrounds. The result was a huge change in how classical Russian music was performed, becoming less subtle, more interested in brute power and flash.

This recording features a massive and powerful choir. But the listener mostly hears a series of vowel sounds, with the consonants lost in the shuffle. Dynamic range is not as large as it could be. Phrasing is largely absent and we hear a steady wall of sound instead. Precision of rhythm is spotty, what consonants we do hear are frequently smeared. Pitch and richness of tone are good, but on high notes, inevitably given the size of the choir, some members strain.

Having performed and recorded Tchaikovsky's Liturgy I am very familiar with the piece. But listening to this recording of excerpts from it I sometimes barely recognized it as the same work. Tchaikovsky gives us great artistry, frequently crecendos and decrecendos on a single phrase. Each choral voice comes and goes like a wave, not all together like a tsunami in all but a few places. The balance of voices is constantly moving.

I encourage you to listen to the samples available here of the Russian Chamber Chorus's recording of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy, compare the same pieces. This recording is more a Vegas neon version of this great artwork than the fine art it deserves to be shown as. James Oestreich, the New York Times critic, put the Russian Chamber Chorus recording at #4 on his top ten list of classical releases for 2001, and said that if you had not heard it "You only think you know Tchaikovsky."

I hope you give the real Russian classical tradition a listen. It deserves your time, and it will pay you back with a huge amount of pleasure.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Toute le Monde is NOT previously unreleased........2007-07-26

There are some good songs (like Go to Hell, Angry Again, and a lost gem from the Youthanasia sessions called Diadems) but a great deal of filler tracks as well (how many Sex Pistols covers did Dave have to do before he figured out that Deth fans don't like Sex Pistols?).

This is not a Megadeth classic by any means, and can be easily avoided. Take it from me, I've been a fan of the band for about 17 years now and I have all of their albums. The only value in this is if you're a collector, or a die-hard fan who has to own everything Mega. On the other hand, you may want to wait for the upcoming import boxset of rarities.

5 out of 5 stars Finally it is here!!!.......2007-05-23

I have the original pressing of this on cassette, and I have been waiting for Megadeth to re-release this as they did with their back catologue from Capital with bonus tracks. And here it is. The bonus tracks not on the original album are previously un-released Demos of 'A Tout Le Monde', 'Symphony Of Destruction', 'Architecture Of Aggression' and 'New World Order. These are great versions of the classic. Plus the original 8 tracks are nice to have in one spot. Worth the price to re-buy if you are a collector.

What could be more sublime than a wall of dark, rotund Russian voices shimmering against the rising, ornate walls of a great cathedral? Not much, and this compilation of absolutely magnificent music proves it. The label Hearts of Space returns on this third choral collection to the ominous Slavic chant of their first choral album, Sacred Treasures I, which gathered together recordings of stunning Bulgarian and Russian choirs portraying the sacred works of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, and other composers. Whereas Treasures I pulled from varied sections of sacred liturgies, including solo passages, Treasures III most often stays in harmonic chant with select voices occasionally rising and rolling in polyphonic heavenly calls. The collective voice draws the emotive tension taut here, as on Rimsky-Korsakov's "Our Father," which uses the absence of darkness to later juxtapose bold, rising drama. The Kiev chant "Blessed Art Thou O Lord" sends chills down the spine as the whispering consonants of the Russian language skip across the ancient repetition like sand skitters over a stormy beach. This is a collection as breathtakingly beautiful as the Cathedral of the Dormition itself. Not to be missed. --Karen K. Hugg

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely FANTASTIC CD !!.......2007-06-28

I'll keep this short: I'm not new to chant or choral music but there are SO MANY options out here that it's hard to know which ones are worth buying. I've got a few titles in my budding collection but I have to say that this particular recording is FANTASTIC. It is at once awe inspiring, meditative, and peaceful. Simply wonderful...

5 out of 5 stars Sacred and a treasure!.......2007-06-11

Wow! This is as good as the first Sacred Treasures if not better. These holy and divine works are truly "the speech of angels".

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful.......2006-12-28

I've really become taken with Russian choral music as of late. I've tried to get my hands on every recording I can, and amongst them all this is one of the very best. The phrasing, tonality and selection is terrific.

5 out of 5 stars More Divine Beauty and Peace!.......2006-12-03

5 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get any Better!!!.......2006-10-09

Having collected a decent library of sacred music over the years I can readily attest that this is the best sacred music CD that I own, my second favorite being a requiem chant by the monks of Solesmes. Further, upon listening to this CD everyone I know seems to respond to it with the same enthusiasm. Track 10 is my personal favorite, but there are no weak pieces here. The entire production hangs together well. Can't recommend it enough to novice or seasoned liturgical music listener.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album. English church music at its finest........2005-10-06

Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. Here you will find a wide selection of sacred favorites, from Gregorian chant to Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's a misnomer to call it "Anglican," since this would exclude (in addition to, of course, the pre-Reformation Latin hymns) the likes of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd -- both Catholics that kept to the ancient faith despite Elizabeth's (albeit relatively mild) persecutions. Tallis and Byrd set the standard in the 16th century for the distinctive "Englishness" (as opposed to Continental European) style of English choral music, with its soaring majesty yet somehow coupled with a subtle and sustained beauty (as opposed to the Continental ups and downs and often tiresome exaggerations). For those of us in the English-speaking world, this is our heritage. Let's treasure it. As for the recording itself, the mixing is superb. While listening, it's quite easy to imagine yourself in the beautiful King's College Chapel or perhaps heaven itself.

5 out of 5 stars The grand tradition of English music.......2005-09-23

Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church previously issued as two separate discs, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The discs here are straight copies of those discs; hence, if you have those already, there is no need to purchase this - on the other hand, if you do not have the other discs, this is a bargain.

    --Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.

On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.

The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.

    --Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.

    --John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

    --The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

5 out of 5 stars music of great beauty.......2005-04-24

Pop one of these CDs into your car stero, turn up the volume and feel yourself drift into a sublime peace. Can music manifest the existence of God?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Selection, Excellent Performance.......2004-07-28

This two-CD compilation by the Cambridge Singers is truly very good. The repertoire is very diverse and only the best representations of composers and time periods are performed. ALthough most of the pieces were not written with a mixed choir in mind, the Cambridge Singers sing it so well you would not have had any idea. Their performances are careful and exquisite.

5 out of 5 stars Best all-in-one English music CD ever.......2004-04-20

This is a re-release, as one set, of two of my favorite CDs ever: "Faire is the Heaven" and "Hail Gladdening Light" by the Cambridge singers. This is a fabulous compilation of everyone's favorite works from the English Cathedral tradition, all the way from Taverner (16th century) to Tavener (21st century). The selection of works is great and touches all the most important genres. The performance is exquisite, elegant, faultless. The Cambridge Singers have a softer, less edgy sound than the Tallis Scholars, and are more expressive, which may make them easier for some people to listen to, especially for the more recent works. They are no less musical. The Parsons Ave Maria alone brings one to tears. If you want an introduction to English church music, this is the CD to start with. Also makes a great gift, if you already love this music and want to introduce someone else to it.

Kate Wolf's songs still ring true years after her death. This loving tribute contains 14 heartfelt covers culled from the repertoire of the singer-songwriter, who died of leukemia in 1986. From Kathy Mattea's serene opener, "Give Yourself to Love," to Terry Garthwaite's near-tears closer, "Thinking About You," it's apparent that all involved in the project (from the contributing artists to producer Nina Gerber, who collaborated with Wolf through much of her career) hold Wolf in the highest esteem. Highlights here include Dave Alvin's gruff "These Times We're Living In," Nanci Griffith's mournful "Friend of Mine," and Rosalie Sorrels's sweet-as-an-angel version of "In China or a Woman's Heart." --Alexandra Russell

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Tribute CD.......2005-12-05

"Treasures Left Behind" is meant to be a tribute to the late folk-singer Kate Wolf. It's full of her beautiful music, sung by other artists who were either moved by Kate Wolf the person, or by her music.

One of the things I love about this collection is that it includes an insert with a lot of great stories about Kate Wolf, as well as the words to each song.

I found all of the songs on this CD to be both awesome and thought provoking. So, I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys folk-type music - these songs have "real" meaning...

5 out of 5 stars Kate Wolf Music, Kate Wolf People.......2004-02-05

Look at all the musicians here and who they are and what they mean. Go on any page for any Kate Wolf recording and see how many people feel moved to write about Kate and what she meant to them. You are smart if you read all those comments, smarter if you get as much Kate Wolf and her friends as you can, and are lucky, blessed to have found Kate even though she is no longer with us on Earth, she is here with her music, with the spirit that she has inspired.

Kate's "Red Tailed Hawk" will always be inscribed on my brain its beauty its realness, its aptness, and the reality of the golden rolling hills of California. So perfect and beautiful even though I never had a tape or LP or a CD of it until 12 years after it came out, until after we lost Kate. Still its power comes to me as it did on an old radio sitting in an Oakland apartment, the signal fighting its way all the way up from KFAT ("because we need the bucks) down in Gilroy.

The vision of California that Kate weaves on all her records is preciseless, unique real, and a treasure even if much of it is sweeten myth.

I feel so bad that I lived in San Fransisco and Oakland and travelled up and down California and the West Coast in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Kate was doing her best work and only saw her sing once. There was something to her voice that gets through to me, something pure. Part of Kate's magic is the superb arrangements and backup that got from the musical genius Nina Gerber her main accompaniest. Nina is now out there solo alot. If you like guitar and this kind music check out Nina too.
Oh Kate, why didn't we realize how much of a golden treasure you were when you were among us. In her memory think of a performer you might miss like we all miss Kate--well that isnt fair because thats a big ideal to measure up to--how about someone you would miss half or a quarter as much as I miss Kate, and make sure you go see them while you can, and maybe bring a friend, bring two. How about going to see everyone on this record who is touring and ask them to do a Kate Wolf song, or better, ask them to do whatever song Kate liked them to play for her.

    4 out of 5 stars sweet love..........2001-10-15

This CD will bring you to tears...all the artists that paid tribute to Kate Wolf did so with all their hearts...every song is done with tender loving care and honor the memory of this beautiful song writer...

5 out of 5 stars Radiant proof that Kate Wolf was a first rate lyricist.......2001-07-03

I love these songs more than those that I've heard Kate Wolf herself sing. Lucinda William's contribution is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars In memoriam Kate.......2001-06-14

A lovingly produced tribute to the late folk singer/songwriter. Some of the artists -- John Gorka, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams -- never met her but are fervent admirers. Others -- U Utah Phillips, Terry Garthwaite, Peter Rowan, Greg Brown -- worked with her. Each seems moved to invest something of their soul in the songs, and the result is extremely moving. Best tracks? Well, they're all great, but I'd give the nod to Dave Alvin's world-weary take on These Times We're Living In, and the age-meets-experience of Phillips on See Here She Said and Rosalie Sorrel's In China Or A Woman's Heart; and the instrumental version of Back Roads by Nina Gerber, Kate's own guitarist, who also acted as the producer and motivating force behind the project. If you don't know anything about Kate Wolf, you'll be a fan by the time the record's over; if you're already a fan, you'll be intrigued and moved by the different approach each artist brings to these songs. Get it; you'll never regret it.

    4 out of 5 stars A good collection, but with a caveat.......2004-08-27

First of all, let me say that I enjoyed this CD a lot, and I'm glad to have it because I love anything that Doris Day sings. But it falls short of 5 stars for one reason.

Some CDs have a note about the fact that the sound is not perfect because of the exigencies of copying old 78s or other such media. This CD suffers from the problem to a much greater extent than most. To mention one, on "It Might as Well Be Spring" the surface noise is loud enough to be a serious problem. Now, I understand that there are problems in anything where you have to start with 50+ year old material, and if you want to hear these recordings (which have otherwise never been released) you have to put up with this. But it should be noted that the problem exists, and you should be warned.

Other than that, it's certainly a showpiece for that great Doris Day voice, accompanied by the Les Brown band that brought her into the public eye.

5 out of 5 stars VARESE SCORES AGAIN !.......2004-01-06

As I have stated in other reveiws for AMAZON.com, Varese Sarabande is one of those rare companies that actually CARE about
the products they produce; and this BROWN/DAY offering shows this to great advantage. The digital remastering is awesome, except for the last track: The Lady From 29 Palms. This is from an early HIT PARADE show and Doris is not backed by Les on this cut but by Mark Warnow and the Hit Parade Orch. This must have been a wretched original, as even Varese couldn't clean it up.
This is the only blemish on an otherwise outstanding collection..
a real "find" for Brown-Day loyalists....

5 out of 5 stars "American Pop Culture during its heyday ~ Day & Brown".......2003-12-15

Varese Sarabande Records presents "Lost Treasures", featuring Doris Day with the Les Brown Orchestra in the mid '40s, performing seventeen tunes (which many have never seen the light of day) with Day's high energy delivery. Much like Rosemary Clooney, Day's interpretation of a song is magicial ~ newly remastered with a richer and astonishingly sonic sound, that gives you the impression you're there!

Entire collection is a stand out with "WELCOME TO MY DREAM", "GOODNIGHT, WHEREVER YOU ARE", "TWO HEAVENS" and "INVITATION TO THE BLUES", warmer and expressive style that can melt your heart right on the spot ~ arrangements and texture of each tune brings back memories of the early times in American pop culture ~ so much love and affection went into this release and it pays off...gotta love it!

The debut entry in a 2005 series that sees the reissue, repackaging and remastering of the entire Herb Alpert/Tijuana Brass catalog, Lost Treasures collects 22 tracks that were either never released or available on obscure, unsuccessful albums. Compiled by Alpert who contributes fascinating liner notes and overdubbed a few horn parts that hadn't been preserved through the decades, this is not only a labor of love, but a remarkably cohesive hour-long listening experience. It is also far from a haphazard collection of throwaway material. All of these tunes are finished and would have comfortably slotted on one of Alpert's dozen or so 1960s releases. Modified versions of standards such as "Tennessee Waltz" and often radically rearranged pop hits of the day from James Taylor, The Beatles and Gilbert O'Sullivan comprise the majority of the disc. Alpert also plunges into the fertile Bacharach/David songbook that yielded a number one hit with "This Guy's in Love With You." The aborted followup single of "Close to You" that appears here, was handed over to the Carpenters. Throughout, the Brass' sunny, south of the border jazz-pop retains its innocent, upbeat, bright-eyed appeal. The lack of specific personnel or recording dates doesn't detract from this surprisingly successful collection of "leftovers" that ultimately stacks up as one of Alpert's most diverse and enjoyable albums. --Hal Horowitz

      Album Description

22 Previously Unreleased and Rare Recordings That Are Just as Good as the Hits!

The first album by the original Tijuana Brass lineup in 30 years, Lost Treasures compiles previously unreleased tracks and hard-to-find rarities, hand-picked by Alpert himself. Herb Alpert was so prolific in the '60s that tons of great songs got left behind in the vaults. Many are interpretations of songs by pop music's greatest writers, including James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" and The Beatles' "And I Love Her." Other standouts include Cat Stevens' "Whistlestar," written specifically for Alpert, and Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "(They Long To Be) Close To You," which, after recording it himself, he felt was better suited to a new A&M act called The Carpenters. This song, like the other 21 gems here, has been newly mixed and mastered.

Each album in the Herb Alpert Signature Series features meticulously remastered sound, deluxe packaging, detailed liner notes, and an intro by Herb Alpert containing personal recollections and anecdotes.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best Herb Alpert.......2006-06-14

If you can't get enough of the "brass", you'll probably want this album to complete your collection. If you want to hear some wonderful new TJB material, this is probably not it. Some songs are perfect for trumpret/brass treatment and succeed well. Others should have never been attempted. Close to You is horrible and it should have been buried forever after the Carpenters wonderful version. Most of the songs here are mildly interesting. To Alpert's credit, he tried a lot of different material, some of which was very difficult to do on trumpet. The best of it made it made it to his released albums (the Third Man Theme, for example, is simply amazing). Nothing outstanding or amazing like that on this album. These items were left behind for good reason; they just weren't as good as his other material that was released before. That doesn't mean this is a terrible album. It is enjoyable listening and there are serveral quite good songs on the album, but many of the songs just aren't that well done. Why did Alpert even record some of these? Good ones: Up Cherry Street; Flowers on the Wall and Whistlestar. Bad ones: Close to You, Tennessee Waltz, Popcorn. Most of the others are mediocre. If you never heard Alpert before, this album is like a appetizer, with most of his other albums being the main course and Whipped Cream and Other Delights being the dessert. Keep in mind that Alpert on a bad day was better than most on their best days. If this had been his first album ever released, I think the reviews might have said something like: "not bad; nice beginning effort; shows potential". Buy all the other Alpert albums first and if you still want more, then buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Lost Treasures review.......2006-02-28

Another amazing album from Herb Alpert. A myiad of tunes included, some I was familiar with, but the majority new to me.
I used to play trumpet many years ago, and now after hearing these new compilations, I'm getting that itchy feeling to pick it up again. I just can't stop whistling the tunes.

3 out of 5 stars What Was Herb Thinking????.......2006-02-04

I just received this CD along with "What Now My Love" and "The Beat of the Brass". I have all the rest of the re-release series except "The Lonely Bull" (I never owned the vinyl), but I will get it soon to complete my childhood (er, I mean the set).

So....I listen to "The Beat of the Brass", then I pop this CD in to listen for the first time and WOW! But not a good "wow". The bass about blew me out of my chair! I looked to see who mixed this and found that Herb would give mixing a shot. Sure, maybe he mixed some stuff for the original recordings, but hey Herb, nothing works as good at 70 as it did at 30.

Most all the other reviewers have commented on the music itself, and I found most of it enjoyable, but my main beef is the mix. I think it stinks! If you listen to the originals (even the remix), the "support" band is properly placed in the background. In this recording, they are "out front". Heavy bass, heavy drums. I could feel the percussion on my head and on one song, I was sure I was "inside" the guitar.

I strongly disagree with another reviewer that these tracks should have been released as "bonus" tracks on the other CD's. No way. The mix is totally different and it wouldn't "fit".

So would I buy this again? Do you think I'm crazy? Of course I would!

Now. Where is "Warm" and "The Brass are Coming"? Let's get with it Shout.

5 out of 5 stars 'Lost Treasures' a Goldmine of Rare Gems.......2006-02-01

Not sure why I am writing a review, since so many people have already given this 'new' release from the classic Tijuana Brass period such a gracious welcome. But like an additional trumpet harmony to the chorus, let me add, it is not only a thing of beauty, but enough songs to represent a DOUBLE album, and one that would easily rank among the very best of the entire catalog!

With that said, why did these tracks fail to find release back in the day? Herb asks the same question in his liner notes and really couldn't recall! Only that he was shocked to find so MANY lost treasures that he had forgotten existed or were even recorded. In any case, it was a lucky stroke of genius to overlook them the first time around so that we could enjoy such a beautiful set of numbers alongside all the re-releases of this golden era of heart-warming classic TB albums.

In addition to hearing Alpert's own sung version of "(They Long to Be) Close To You", which was originally to be a Tijuana Brass release before deciding to hand it over to The Carpenters to record for their own A&M release(!!!...the rest is history), this album closes with a gorgeous and unique production of cat stevens' "Whistlestar" which would be worth the entire cost of the album all by itself. It's a stunner.

      2 out of 5 stars Treasure?.......2006-01-16

This was the first disc released in the big remastering project of 2005 for the Herb Alpert and the Shout Factory's catalog. A really nice business move Herbster!

"Lost Treasures" has twenty two previously unreleasd tracks or should I say leftovers, as I hear 'em. I found only a couple of these "Lost Treasures" tunes worth the purchase. I really think Herb should have dropped the "Lost Treasures" idea and placed these leftovers at the end of the each album from which they came. In other words, good ol' bonus tracks. The 2005 version of "Whipped cream and other delights" does have a couple bonus tracks, which don't appear here, but could have. The other studio albums could have used some of these "Lost Treasure" out-takes, but no.

Buyers beware, unless you're a Tijuana nut.
