Back in the days when the forces that controlled television actually cared about art, it was perfectly normal to see original plays and live musical performances right in your living room. In 1950, Menotti was commissioned to write an opera for television, and on Christmas Eve, 1951, Amahl and the Night Visitors was performed by the NBC Television Theater. This recording, under the composer's personal direction, was made a few days later, and it remains the definitive version, even though the sound is very dated and rough in places. This story of a poor shepherd boy's encounter with three kings and the miraculous healing of his crippled leg when he offers his crutch as a gift has captured audiences around the world ever since its premiere. Its charming mix of tuneful melody, dancing rhythms, delightful choruses, humor and poignancy, and an English text makes this work immediately accessible to audiences of all ages and musical tastes. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
My favorite Christmas music.......2007-05-13
Having seen the original TV production of Amahl as a kid, I have very fond and tender memories of this story, and I find the music to be absolutely delightful - profound but in a very accessible and somewhat playful way. This recording brings back the spirit of Christmas to me instantly!
An unsung genius.......2007-04-10
Giancarlo Menotti slipped peacefully to his rewards recently after having composed some of the finest music of the last century. Although an Italian native, his ability to place English words in his vocal works in exactly the right places to allow singers their best production, he is still not performed often. His story lines are always poignant, whether for opera or ballet and his orchestral works strike at the emotional heart of the listener while giving the performers great opportunities to shine. His Christmas opera, "Amahl and the Night Visitors" was first telecast with a brilliant, wonderfully cast and directed group of singers and dancers and was an immediate success, scheduled to be repeated the following season. Only one copy of the tape was stored and, incredibly, was "accidentally" erased, before the second telecast. It was necessarily recast in the role of Amahl, since the first young boy's voice had changed. This is the result of that recasting, with the rest of the amazing singers and new boy recreating a blessed and beautiful masterpiece. I regret that the same care was not given to the visual aspects in the second, hastily produced telecast.
In my opinion, this creation should be lovingly produced every year!
I am a grateful singer of his works.
Amahl and the Night Visitors made our Christmas very precious!.......2007-01-20
I grew up listening to this operetta and it was so exciting to find it again and make it a part of my family's traditions. This is an excellent recording.
Mother, Mother, Mother Come With Me..........2007-01-13
It's as good as I remember from my own childhood, and I was AMAZED when my 5 year old son DEMANDED to hear it over and over on our recent trip to Minnesota. Now, weeks after we've packed away our Christmas CD's, my son STILL sings out from the other room "Mother! Mother! Mother come with me, I want to be sure that you see what I see!" whenever he wants to show me something. I'm glad that such a wonderful piece of our culture has been woven into the consciousness of yet another generation.
A must have.......2007-01-10
My earliest childhood memories of Christmas always include Amahl. My parents saw this the first year they were married and it became a tradition to listen to it after that.
It has become the cornerstone of my families holiday celebrations.

Product Description
Its hard to overestimate the impact of McKinley Morganfield on the Chicago post-war blues scene, and by extension on rocknroll itself. Having come from the heart of the Mississippi Delta (Rolling Fork), he spent the first 28 years of his life close to his birthplace, leaving for the Windy City in 1943.
With this set of recordings, which covers the years 1952-1958, we continue the survey of the complete recorded works of Muddy Waters in chronological order. The first fifty tracks of his Aristocrat/Chess career appear on Muddy Waters, Rollin' Stone: The Golden Anniversary Collection (MCA/Chess 2301-2); the present set continues to follow his musical development, and showcases the second fifty sides, picking up where the previous collection ended and spanning an important seven year period in his career.
Packaged in a bound booklet, replete with rare photographs and extensive liner notes, this set captures Muddy Waters at the height of his commercial success, and includes literally dozens of songs that influenced rock and blues performers right up to the present day.

Almost as Good as the Christmas Music.......2007-05-27
I love Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas music, so I've been collecting their music for other holidays as well. I wish they'd avoided the occasional speaking parts in this but I love most of the musical parts. They did a good job on the Aaron Copland piece! I'll be listening to it other than on July 4th.

Customer Reviews:
Jazz Meets Blue-Eyed Soul.......2007-05-15
Cassandre McKinley, ostensibly a jazz singer, has released this c.d. on MaxJazz, as part of their superior catalogue of excellent jazz vocalists who deserve wider recognition. These mostly are songs of Marvin Gaye, and the c.d. is a tribute to the late, great soul-man.
For the most part, this intersection of jazz and soul sounds more like soul than jazz. The exceptions are "You're the One for Me", and to my ears the best track on this disc: ironically, the Beatles "Yesterday." On that track, Ms. McKinley plays with the familiar melody and transmogrifies it into a soul-sounding tune.
Cassandre McKinley is an accomplished singer, and the c.d. sounds fine. But Amazon commands four stars if you like it, five stars if you love it. I like it. There's something I can't put my finger on that keeps me from loving it.
Maybe it's this: Marvin Gaye was so good, that if you do a tribute to him that sounds like soul, you're going to come out second-best. Take "Your Precious Love", for example: Here, she does this as a duet with Michael Payette, which sounds good; but it will hardly make you forget the original.
Nevertheless, an "A" for effort. I look forward to Cassandre McKinley's next c.d. RC
New Fan.......2006-09-05
On a visit to St. Louis last month, friends "dragged" me to The Jazz Bistro for a "night out" that I didn't even want. BLESS THEM !! What an incredible surprise !! It was Cassandre McKinley's CD release show, and I am so glad I was there. Ms. McKinley's renditions of Marvin Gaye's music were just awesome. Her voice is smooth and rich. I bought the CD and haven't stopped playing it since. It is so obvious that Ms. McKinley is truly FEELING every note she sings. It really touches me. If you want insight and emotion delivered with a truly beautiful voice, you will find it on this CD. I am a now a true (if new) fan.

Customer Reviews:
Great McKinley,Bradley/Slack collection.......2001-09-02
Fine collection of Boogie Woogie classics from the late 30's & early 40's featuring the talents of Will Bradley, Ray McKinley and the great piano of Freddie Slack.I remember these songs and it's great to hear the originals again. This cd is obviously not quadrophonic or sterophonic as the originals were on mono 78's. To complain about the quality, in my opinion, seems somewhat ludicrous. The cd I received portrays the original sound just as I remember it. That's just the way it was back then. This one rates 5 stars in my book. A great collection of Boodgie Woogie memories with a couple of ballads thrown in for good measure. Plus, you get the instrumental side 2 of "Beat Me Daddy" which is a little hard to find on other cd's. You won't be disappointed if you are aware of what you are buying.
This Album is Fun.......2001-03-11
Although the recording technology could have been better, the music is great. Ray McKinley drives this collection with his hugely popular Beat Me Daddy 8 to the Bar and other big hits. The band is at its tightest on Bounce Me Brother with a Solid 4. Will Bradley is one of the best trombone players of the era and shows off well in several cuts. Some of the numbers are more fun than exciting - but all in all, if you like good jazz, this is one you have.
Great song selection, mostly disappointing audio.......1999-12-04
In my opinion, this CD has the best song selection available on this great band. But just like the Sony/Columbia CD, they did not bother to properly restore this material. There is a lot of echo in many of the tracks, interestingly enough though, "Scub Me Mama" is the alternate take. Untill someone properly issues this material, I'll keep playing my 78's.

Beautiful Victor Herbert.......1999-05-19
This recording (Arabesque Z6561) is one of three CD recordings of Victor Herbert's music by Don Hunsberger and the Eastman School of music produced in the early 1980's. (The others are Arabesque Z6529 and Z6547) All are superbly recorded using the original orchestra arrangements from a composer who was gifted in the art of orchestration. We get a sampling of marches, selections from operettas, humor songs, and a selection from his opera Natoma. Teresa Ringholt sings with the orchestra on a few songs and her sweet soprano voice is perfect for the part. We need more of Victor Herbert's beautiful music to be discovered and performed in the way Herbert intended it to be performed. The authenic Victor Herbert may be the next discovery in the same way the authenic Scott Joplin has been discovered by the public.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful playing........2007-06-14
Often a CD is purchased to hear new music, but after one playing it is shelved. I have listened to this recording multiple times. The three composers featured explore wonderful sounds and moods of the clarinet in works that do not follow any standard "concerto" format, but rather are "collections" of shorter movements. The styles of the composers are distinctively different of course. Mr. Sach's "Portals" describe a seven section ritual. Mr. Davidson's "Meditation and Dance" is a 23 minute work but with multiple sections played attacca and contains some wonderful Klesmer playing. The "9 shades of Lament" and "6 Movements for Clarinet and Orchestra" by Mr. McKinley reflect the close collaboration this prolific composer and clarinet master have had over the years. Both of the compositions make for wonderful listening. I don't have the adjectives at my fingertips for Mr. Stoltzman's beautiful expressiveness. And these are some of my favorite works by Mr. McKinley.
Carl St. Clair could be conducting one of the "major" symphonies, but it quite comfortable molding the Pacific Symphony into a major artistic force in Southern California. He has led the Warsaw Philharmonic before in recordings of new music and in this recording as on others, the musicians in Poland approach the new compositions as if they were playing Mozart.
